Default Re: [EPL] Manchester United vs Newcastle United

24/12/2012 23:56 - ManUtd.com, Nick Coppack
Preview: Newcastle

Form guide: On Sunday, Manchester United drew for the first time in 28 matches as Swansea*City held the Reds 1-1. Sir Alex Ferguson's men remain top of the Barclays Premier League table, however, four points clear of Manchester City. The Magpies come into the game on the back of a late 1-0 victory over Queens Park Rangers. History suggests Newcastle could be in for a tough day,*though. The Reds have a formidable Boxing Day record, winning 15 games, drawing two and losing just once since the Premier League's inception.

Ins and outs: Nemanja Vidic's recent return is a welcome boost for the Reds' defence, but this game could still come too soon for Shinji Kagawa, Nani, Anderson and Rafael, who all missed the Reds' trip to Swansea. Newcastle have been hit by terrible luck this season and will certainly be without Hatem Ben Arfa, Steven Taylor, Yohan Cabaye, Dan Gosling, Haris Vuckic and Ryan Taylor. Former*Reds winger Gabriel Obertan did return for the Toon last weekend, though.

Last meeting: This will be the fourth game in 2012 between the two teams. Newcastle won the first, but United triumphed in the next two, playing arguably the best football of the season at St James' Park in a 3-0 victory and then, in the Capital One Cup at Old Trafford, edging past the Toon thanks to goals by Anderson and Tom Cleverley in an entertaining 2-1 win.

Did you know? All three of Cleverley's goals for Manchester United have come against teams from the North East. Tom's scored in both of the Reds' clashes against Newcastle this season (including a brilliant curling shot from near the touchline in the 3-0 away win) and also found the net in United's recent victory over Sunderland at Old Trafford.

Opposition boss: Alan Pardew is the current League Managers Association Manager of the Year after leading the Magpies to a fifth-placed finish in 2011/12. That feat also earned him an eight-year contract extension from the Newcastle board. Still, he's been under fire recently as the Toon have struggled for consistency this season and languish in 14th place. He recently admitted he should have made more signings in the summer.

Star man: Senegalese striker Demba Ba has netted two goals in his three appearances against United and, despite Newcastle's faltering league position,*has been banging them in for the Geordies this term. He's bagged 11 already and looks in a rich vein*of form. Strong, quick and needing only the briefest sight of goal before he pulls the trigger, he's sure to prove a handful for United's centre backs.*

Sub-plots: Defender Danny Simpson and winger Gabriel Obertan*both enjoyed spells at Old Trafford before moving north and will no doubt relish a return to the Theatre of Dreams. The Magpies will also be desperate to end their Old Trafford hoodoo: they've not won here since February 1972.

Whistle-blower: Mike Dean will be in charge of the Reds for the third time this season. He's previously refereed United's wins at Southampton and at home to Arsenal. He'll hope for a less eventful fixture than Mike Jones oversaw last term when his controversial penalty award handed Newcastle a point.

Rivals watch:*United fans will no doubt keep a close eye on Man City's Boxing Day trip to Sunderland and the action at Carrow Road where Chelsea visit Norwich City (both 15:00 GMT kick-offs).

Business As Usual For Boss

Newcastle's players will train on Christmas day ahead of their trip to Manchester United and what Alan Pardew admits is a tough festive programme

While most of their fans are unwrapping presents and preparing Christmas dinner, Newcastle United's players will be training ahead of their Boxing Day meeting with league leaders Manchester United.

It's one of the sacrifices footballers make at this time of year, with Alan Pardew acutely aware that his side can't afford a day off - even at this festive time of year - if they're to get a result at Old Trafford.

But the Magpies manager, whose side won at Bolton last Boxing Day, knows that the best gift of all this year for fans, players and staff alike would be three points against Sir Alex Ferguson's men.

"We'll be in training," Pardew said. "You've got to get up early if you're going to beat Manchester United.

"We'll be up nice and early, get our work done and then send the players home to see their families before they fly to Manchester, so it's a busy Christmas day for our staff."

It's a busy few days, in fact, because United then face Arsenal three days later before hosting Everton on 2nd January.

Having faced reigning champions Manchester City already this month, Pardew's team will now face three of the current top four in the space of just over a week and he accepts that it won't be an easy run of fixtures .

"I think when you looked at the programme at the start, you could see this was a tough run for us - and even tougher now with the results we've had and the injuries we've sustained," said Pardew, who saw his side gain three valuable points at home to Queens Park Rangers on Saturday.

"But I'm actually going into it probably more buoyed than any other point of the season. I think we've definitely picked up, we look a little bit more resiliant, we picked up a very important clean sheet on Saturday and I think we'll be in good heart for what is one of the toughest games of the programme: Manchester United away."

Pardew confirmed that he has no fresh injury worries after the weekend's game, although he will be without the suspended Cheick Tiote .

Pardew Praises Papiss

Alan Pardew has hailed Papiss Cisse's work-rate as the striker looks to end a five-game wait for a goal at Old Trafford on Boxing Day

On Boxing Day Papiss Cisse will return to Old Trafford, the Theatre of Dreams where got off the mark for the season, looking for another kick-start to a stuttering campaign in front of goal.

And he does so with the full backing of his manager Alan Pardew , who has praised the way the Senegalese striker has continued to work for the team despite only managing four goals in his first full season at St. James' Park after netting 13 goals in 14 appearances last term.

Cisse was visibly frustrated when he was substituted in the second half of Saturday's 1-0 win over Queens Park Rangers having enjoyed little reward for another energetic display alongside Demba Ba .

But having scored once against Manchester United already this season - in the Capital One Cup in September - the 27-year-old will look to repeat the trick on Wednesday in the Barclays Premier League.

And Pardew believes the goals will come if Cisse continues to display the same determination and effort for Newcastle as he has throughout his barren spell.

"I think Papiss is just a victim of our injury programme, if I'm honest," said the Magpies boss.

"Without (Hatem) Ben Arfa and (Yohan) Cabaye we've lacked a bit of flair and quality in the final third and of course if you've got that it creates moments for Papiss to finish.

"He hasn't had a lot moments in games but his work-rate, his commitment to the cause, cannot be faulted and we continue to work with him and hopefully he'll get the goals soon."

Default Re: [EPL] Manchester United vs Newcastle United

VIVAbola - Manchester United gagal meraih poin penuh pekan lalu. The Red Devils ditahan imbang Swansea City 1-1, Minggu 23 Desember 2012.

The Magpies tak pernah memetik kemenangan di Old Trafford sejak 1972, total 30 laga sejak itu.

Boxing day, butuh rotasi pemain nih, Rooney bisa kali istirahat dulu :p

Rooney and Vale mgkn juga dirotasi sama Kagawa n Welbo.
