Re: THE 40 nationalities to wear a Manchester United shirt
HOW UNITED'S YOUTH SYSTEM HELPS THE WORLD The Manchester United youth system has produced 115 homegrown internationals to date, endorsing its reputation for producing footballers capable of playing at the highest level. Some 24 countries have been represented by graduates from Old Trafford and that impressive total began with ‘Gentleman’ Johnny Carey for Ireland. It was extended in June when Academy graduate Marcus Rashford and Tom Heaton, now with Burnley, appeared for England against Australia. The number will increase in this international break if Michael Keane makes his senior debut for the Three Lions in Friday's World Cup qualifying match against Scotland, or in Tuesday's friendly with Spain. Here, following some extensive research, we are pleased to display the names of United’s 115 homegrown internationals and the 24 nations they have proudly represented. England (32): John Aston Sr, David Beckham, Wes Brown, Nicky Butt, Roger Byrne, Fraizer Campbell, Bobby Charlton, Tom Cleverley, Danny Drinkwater, Mike Duxbury, Duncan Edwards, Bill Foulkes, Brian Greenhoff, Tom Heaton, Brian Kidd, Jesse Lingard, Wilf McGuinness, Johnny Morris, Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Stan Pearson, David Pegg, David Platt, Marcus Rashford, Kieran Richardson, Jimmy Rimmer, David Sadler, Paul Scholes, Ryan Shawcross, Nobby Stiles, Dennis Viollet, Danny Welbeck Northern Ireland (23): George Best, Jackie Blanchflower, Ronnie Briggs, Alex Bruce, Craig Cathcart, Corry Evans, Jonny Evans, Keith Gillespie, Johnny Gorman, David Healy, Phil Hughes, David McCreery, Luke McCullough, Sammy McIlroy, Sammy McMillan, Paddy McNair, Philip Mulryne, Colin Murdock, Jimmy Nicholl, Jimmy Nicholson, Oliver Norwood, Jackie Scott, Norman Whiteside Republic of Ireland (18): Robbie Brady, Shay Brennan, Johnny Carey, Joe Carolan, Eamon Dunphy, Darron Gibson, Johnny Giles, Don Gibson, Tommy Hamilton, Jackie Hennessy, Jon Macken, Alan McLoughlin, Paul McShane, Jackie Mooney, John O’Shea, Anthony Pilkington, Paddy Sloan, Billy Whelan Wales (10): Clayton Blackmore, James Chester, Alan Davies, Simon Davies, Ryan Giggs, Mark Hughes, Tom Lawrence, Daniel Nardiello, Peter O’Sullivan, Robbie Savage Scotland (6): Arthur Albiston, Phil Bardsley, Francis Burns, Hugh Curran, Darren Fletcher, Michael Stewart United States (4): Kenny Cooper, Jovan Kirovski, Jonathan Spector, John Thorrington Australia (3): Stan Acklerley, Ray Baartz, Mark Bosnich Norway (3): Mats-Moller Daehli, Magnus Wolff Eikrem, Joshua King Belgium: Adnan Januzaj Bermuda: Shaun Goater Canada: Shaun Lowther Cayman Islands: Jamie Wood France: Paul Pogba Germany: Ron-Robert Zieler Gibraltar: Danny Higginbotham Italy: Giuseppe Rossi Jamaica: David Johnson Malta: Paul Sixsmith Mauritius: Kalam Mooniaruck Pakistan: Adnan Ahmed Saint Kitts and Nevis: Febian Brandy South Africa: Mike Rowbotham Spain: Gerard Pique Sweden: Johnny Rodlund Here are some other interesting facts and figures to stem from our research… MOST-CAPPED YOUTH PLAYERS 1: John O’Shea (Republic of Ireland) – 116 caps 2: David Beckham (England) – 115 caps 3: Bobby Charlton (England) – 106 caps 4: David Healy (Northern Ireland) – 95 caps 5: Sammy McIlroy (Northern Ireland) – 88 caps 6: Keith Gillespie (Northern Ireland) – 86 caps 7: Gary Neville (England) – 85 caps 8: Gerard Pique (Spain) – 84 caps 9: Darren Fletcher (Scotland) – 76 caps 10: Jimmy Nichol (Northern Ireland) – 73 caps KINGS OF THE WORLD Bobby Charlton and Nobby Stiles were cornerstones of England’s 1966 World Cup triumph, but their success has been superseded in the modern era by Gerard Pique, who lifted the trophy in 2010 before completing the international set with the 2010 European Championship. Our most recent world champion is Ron-Robert Zieler as Germany’s third-choice goalkeeper in 2014. FLYING THE FLAG IN 2016 The 15 current or former Reds who have played international football this year include Jesse Lingard, Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford, Tom Heaton, Danny Drinkwater, Craig Cathcart, Corry Evans, Jonny Evans, Paddy McNair, Oliver Norwood, Robbie Brady, James Chester, Gerard Pique, John O’Shea and Darren Fletcher. IT’S NEVER TOO LATE When opportunity knocks, it is seldom so late to the party as it was for Danny Higginbotham. The ex-United defender made his international bow at 34 in Gibraltar’s first-ever match as a UEFA member, having gained eligibility through his grandmother. He was Man of the Match in his debut against Slovakia. THE MAN FROM MAURITIUS Youth player Kalam Mooniaruck's rise to international level is an unusual tale, as he told us. "Having played for the England youth teams up to the under-20s, I hadn’t thought of playing for Mauritius," he said. "But my dad is from there and he was approached by someone linked to their football association. I was contacted and they arranged for me to come over, to play in a double-header against Reunion Island. The level was not what I was used to with United, but the experience was brilliant. Having two caps – especially now with four children and a wife – is something I am proud of." http://www.manutd.com/ |
