Default James Weir

WEIR GROWING INTO A WIDE ROLE FOR UNDER-21S

James Weir is a stalwart of the Manchester United Under-21 side and has trained with the first-team squad as he strives to impress the coaching staff at the Aon Training Complex.

The Preston-born Academy graduate captained Warren Joyce's team for the first time this term and opened his account for the season in the win over Everton, finishing off a neat one-two with his friend James Wilson.

Unfortunately, due to several postponements, there have not been regular outings in front of the cameras yet in 2015/16 but his form has been good: he scored twice in one behind-closed-doors game with Oldham Athletic, for instance, and admitted: "I could have had a few more!" Progress, of course, needs to be made and, at the age of 20, he is learning to perfect his role in the side.

When asked by ManUtd.com about his versatility, he replied: "I've been mainly on the left this year but I can come in off the flank and play as a false winger, if you like, which is quite popular in the modern game. I can also still play as a central midfielder who can make runs forward and hopefully get back as well. I can play that narrow left-winger role and do a job for the team while also scoring some goals."

It was suggested Juan Mata perhaps performs a similar role for Louis van Gaal's side, albeit on the opposite flank, and Weir appreciates he can learn from watching the Spaniard and other United stars. "It's similar," he said. "He cuts inside and gets goals and good assists. I'm hoping I can do the same. Juan is a quality player so I can watch him in games and even in training with them. You learn different things from observing what they do."

Unsurprisingly, Weir and his Under-21 colleagues have been called into sessions with the first-team group. Several youngsters featured before the squad jetted off to the United States in the summer and he was again pictured with them during preparations for the last Champions League fixture against Wolfsburg.

"It was a 10-day period [in the summer] and I had a big chance to go on tour," he explained. "Unfortunately, I just didn't make it but it was a really good opportunity and a great experience training with them. It's all good experience."

Weir appreciates he must catch the eye in the Under-21s but is hopeful the team can climb the table and, ultimately, retain the title once the shortfall in fixtures is addressed; the Reds have only played two league matches to date and, hence, the club currently sits in a lowly ninth in the 12-team table.

"If you're not having proper games that are being shown on MUTV you need to keep your match fitness," he said. "You can train all you want but nothing is like a 90-minute game so you need to keep having the friendlies.

"It's a good bunch of lads and we train hard. This is my third year in the Reserves and I can see the standard is still just as high in training as it has been when we've won the league. If we all work hard and maybe still get a few of the first-team lads dropping down to help with experience and quality now and again, I think we've got every chance."

At least there are matches at big grounds to relish and not just Old Trafford, something of a happy hunting ground for Weir in the past. "I scored two against Norwich and I think I had three in two matches at one point," he laughed. "It wouldn't be a bad specialist ground, would it? There is nothing like playing in front of a crowd, especially when you compare it to the matches at the training ground. It's just not the same. The stadiums are much better and the fans make for a better atmosphere because they're up for the game."

As is the case with all of United's Academy graduates, the ambition is an obvious one. "The goal is to get in the first team," he asserted. "I try to do my best and impress Warren and the coaches plus the first-team staff in training. Hopefully, I can get there. I just try to do as well as I can by keep pushing and striving towards that first team.

"I've been training with them a few times in pre-season and just want to get on their radar and maybe get in the squad one time. You never know how things will work out – I look at Paddy, Willo, Andreas and Jesse and just hope I can do that too."

Berikut profil James Weir..

Formerly on the books of Preston North End, his hometown club, he joined United in 2008 and has risen steadily through the ranks.

An attacking midfielder with an eye for a pass, he clearly has plenty of ability in abundance. He managed 21 appearances during the title-winning Under-21 campaign of 2014/15 with 10 of those coming as a substitute. Unusually for such a precise finisher, he contributed only one goal and that was in the Lancashire Senior Cup victory at Accrington Stanley.

He remained with the Reds throughout the year rather than departing on loan but appears ready to take the next step in terms of gaining experience of league football.

Due to the competition for places at Under-18 level, he was often initially used at full-back and managed to make 11 starts in 2011/2012 and contributed plenty going forward as well as in defence.

However, he nailed down a regular starting spot in his preferred midfield position in 2012/2013 and proved a key contributor to Paul McGuinness' side. A strong runner, he keeps possession with his neat, economical passing and is always capable of bursting through to make things happen.

Another to be introduced into Warren Joyce's plans, he is held in high regard by McGuinness and was in the frame for the Young Player of the Year award, with the coach stressing that, although some fans may view him as an unsung hero, his work was at a consistently high.

Regular promotion to Joyce's squad followed an injury lay-off and he did not disappoint, scoring twice at Old Trafford against Norwich City's Under-21s and also in the key final league fixture against Reading.

His first goal of the 2014/15 season came in the Manchester Senior Cup victory against Accrington Stanley after he did well to set up Tom Lawrence for an equaliser in the Under-21s' draw at Liverpool. Coach Joyce has revealed: "He needs a little bit more confidence but the lad is a clever footballer and he does finish well. He is clever when coming inside and he makes good runs that are hard to pick up. More often than not, he does finish too."

Manchester United named youngster James Weir on bench in Newcastle draw... but who is the 20-year-old midfielder?

* Manchester United were held to entertaining 3-3 draw against Newcastle
* James Weir was named on the bench by Dutch manager Louis van Gaal
* The 20-year-old midfielder was an unused substitute at St James' Park

James Weir became the latest player to get a taste of matchday action with Manchester United after he was named on the bench in their entertaining 3-3 draw with Newcastle.

The 20-year-old midfielder travelled with Wayne Rooney and Co to St James' Park and was an unused substitute as Louis van Gaal's men were held by the hosts.

But many were left wondering who the youngster is after he joined the likes of Memphis Depay and Juan Mata on the visitors bench.

James Weir was named on the Manchester United bench in their entertaining 3-3 draw with Newcastle

Weir begun his youth career at Preston, where he was born, before he joined the United academy in 2008, when Sir Alex Ferguson was still in charge of the club.

Since joining the Carrington academy, the attack-minded midfielder has progressed steadily through the youth team ranks.

During his time with the Under 18s team, Weir was often deployed as a full back and managed 11 starts during the 2011-12 campaign.

However, the next season the Preston-born playmaker nailed down a regular starting spot in his preferred midfield position and impressed under Paul McGuinness.

He eventually made the leap and was called up by Warren Joyce to United's Under 21s team where he has consistently played despite a number of injury lay-offs.

Capped by England at various youth levels including the U19s, Weir managed 21 appearances during the 2014-15 title-winning U21s campaign, with 10 of those coming as a substitute

Weir (pictured playing for the United Under 21s team this season) has scored three times in 10 U21s matches

Speaking about the midfielder, Joyce once said: 'He needs a little bit more confidence but the lad is a clever footballer and he does finish well. He is clever when coming inside and he makes good runs that are hard to pick up. More often than not, he does finish too.'

However, it appears he has knuckled down this season and has been ever-present as the captain of Joyce's side this season, scoring three times in 10 appearances.

'The goal is to get in the first team,' said Weir in an interview with ManUtd.com in October.

'I try to do my best and impress Warren Joyce and the coaches plus the first-team staff in training. Hopefully, I can get there. I just try to do as well as I can by keep pushing and striving towards that first team.

'I just want to get on their radar. You never know how things will work out – I look at Paddy [McNair], Willo [James Wilson], Andreas [Pereira] and Jesse [Lingard] and just hope I can do that too.'

'I've been mainly on the left this year but I can come in off the flank and play as a false winger, if you like, which is quite popular in the modern game.

'I can also still play as a central midfielder who can make runs forward and hopefully get back as well. I can play that narrow left-winger role and do a job for the team while also scoring some goals.'

Weir has his eyes fixed firmly on the prize

James Weir is determined to lift the Barclays Under-21 Premier League trophy as Manchester United captain as the Reds approach the final four games in confident mood.

The midfielder has enjoyed a marvellous campaign and is intent on ending 2015/16 with glory as another Old Trafford outing beckons, against Middlesbrough on Monday night.

The skipper's goal against Chelsea, soon after another important equaliser at Liverpool, was his sixth in 20 appearances this term, with only Will Keane scoring more at Under-21 level. As Warren Joyce's side attempt to chase down leaders Sunderland, who are four points clear with one game left to play, the 20-year-old has his eyes fixed firmly on the prize.

"We had a big pep talk before the [Chelsea] game and said we've got five cup finals left if we want to go on to win the league," he told MUTV. "I've been captain all year and, first and foremost, I want to win the league with the Under-21 team.

"Anything else is a bonus if I get another chance in the first team. I've already made my debut so if I get a few more minutes, it'll be amazing.

Without winning [against Chelsea], I'm not going to say it's must-win against Middlesbrough but we do need to win that game. Hopefully, we'll go on to do that and push on in the last three games [away to Southampton, Tottenham and Chelsea]."

Weir was pleased to get on the scoresheet again at Old Trafford and further promote his claims for a place on the shortlist for the Denzil Haroun Reserves Player of the Year award.

"I was just in the right-side channel and had drifted over from the left wing," he explained. "I chopped it back on myself and didn't have time to look up. I just hit it and I think it got a deflection and went into the corner. It helped us get a draw so I'm really happy with that."

Reds midfielder Weir moves to Hull

James Weir has joined Hull City from Manchester United in a deadline-day departure, signing a three-year contract with the Tigers.

The Preston-born midfielder made his one and only senior appearance for the Reds when he came on as a substitute in last season's 3-2 win over Arsenal, the same game in which Marcus Rashford scored twice on his Premier League debut.

Weir, who turned 21 on 4 August, was also an unused first-team substitute on seven occasions under Louis van Gaal while impressing on a regular basis in Warren Joyce's title-winning Under-21s side. The creative player captained the young Reds and ended the campaign with six goals.

Wednesday night's transfer means Weir has followed his United Under-21s colleague Will Keane in making a permanent switch to Hull, the club where former Reds coach Mike Phelan is the caretaker manager.
