Ander Herrera insists Manchester United are 'going to fight' for every title this season as Jose Mourinho's side prepare for visit of West Ham

* Manchester United were defeated 2-1 by Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup
* Ander Herrera believes United 'can take a lot of good things from this game'
* Herrera says United 'are going to fight for all of' next season's competitions

Ander Herrera knows Manchester United can ill afford to stew on their deserved UEFA Super Cup loss as they look to fight on all fronts this season.

The Red Devils were outclassed at times by Real Madrid in sweltering Skopje on Tuesday night, with the manner of the 2-1 loss giving Jose Mourinho food for thought entering his second season at the helm.

The Spanish midfielder's first campaign ended with Europa League glory, bringing the welcome boon of Champions League qualification having already secured EFL Cup and Community Shield success.

It was, though, another disappointing Premier League campaign for United.

Herrera has not finished higher than fourth in his time at Old Trafford and, with the title in his sights, he is desperate to hit the ground running against West Ham on Sunday.

'We have to accept Real deserve to be the winners,' the Spaniard said. 'But we can take a lot of good things from this game.

'The Premier League starts on Sunday, there is no time to be upset, we want to be contenders for the title and we want to fight for every title this season.

'Last season, we won three trophies which is very good, but we didn't fight for the Premier League.

'That's our aim for this season and we have a very good squad. We are going to play in four competitions and we want to fight for all of them.

'In every position, we have two very good players, so I am optimistic for this season and let's forget about tonight.

'I know it's difficult because it's a European trophy and that's important for the club.

'But now the Premier League, then the Champions League will come, the FA Cup and the League Cup. We don't want to give away any competition.

Jose Mourinho's side host West Ham in their opening Premier League game on Sunday

'We are going to fight for all of them and we are going to improve.'

Herrera says United simply came up short against the 'best team in the world' in Real Madrid - a philosophical stance that echoed his manager's post-match thoughts.

Now, though, the attention is on the weekend visit of West Ham - a side bolstered by summer signings such as Marko Arnautovic, Joe Hart, Javier Hernandez and Pablo Zabaleta.

'We are ready and West Ham will be ready as well, because they have also played a pre-season and surely they are going to be fit as well,' Herrera told MUTV.

'But we are playing at Old Trafford in front of our fans and we want to win the first game of the season.

'We have to respect them because they have a very good team, they have signed very good players.

'This season, I think the transfer window has gone good for them. They are going to be difficult to beat. Now is our chance to fight for the Premier League and we have to do it as well.'

ANDER HERRERA LIKENS FC BASEL TO AJAX

Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera believes FC Basel are similar to last season's Europa League final opponents Ajax because of the way they promote players from within their own Academy.

The Swiss side head to Old Trafford to kick off our return to Champions League action on Tuesday and, as part of his analysis of the Reds' Group A rivals during an interview with MUTV, Herrera is paying them maximum respect.

Jose Mourinho's men overcame Ajax 2-0 in Stockholm to qualify for the Champions League but the Dutch side showed their quality throughout the final.

"Manchester United should be in the Champions League every season," said Herrera. "Now we are back after one season and we have to know where we come from. We won the Europa League but we were not in the Champions League, so we have to respect every opponent.

"We face Basel and they’re a very talented team with young players. I think we can compare them with Ajax as they also promote very talented players and have a fantastic Academy. They won the league and cup last season and they are in the Champions League every season, facing good teams and competing against them.

"We want to start the Champions League group well and it’s very important to start with a victory but we have to respect them as well. They will come with good players – a young, talented team and no pressure at Old Trafford. It’s not going to be easy."

CSKA Moscow, our first opponents in the competition on the road, and Benfica are also bidding to prevent United from making the knockout stages.

"We went already to Moscow two seasons ago and we didn't beat them," added Herrera. "We drew away so it's always difficult to play in Russia. Benfica are the best team in the last years in Portugal so we know it's not going to be easy in any game but it's a good group to play against big teams in Switzerland, Portugal and Russia.

"Maybe they are the biggest in their countries so it's a good group and we're looking forward to it. Let's go with everything."

Manchester United star Ander Herrera puts rivals City under the cosh: 'They are obligated to win something. There is pressure when you spend a lot'

* Manchester United's Ander Herrera has cranked up the heat on Manchester City
* The Spanish midfielder says that Pep Guardiola must win silverware this season
* Herrera says the money City have spent means they're title favourites

Ander Herrera has cranked up the heat on Manchester City by claiming Pep Guardiola must win silverware this season.

Manchester United are set to wrestle their bitter rivals for the Premier League title and look ready to launch a sustained charge for the first time since 2013.

It should also see the rivalry of old foes Jose Mourinho and Guardiola intensify. Herrera was the first to throw down the gauntlet with the sides level on goal difference at the top.

Ander Herrera has turned up the heat on Manchester City by saying they must win this season

'We won three titles last season [Community Shield, League Cup and Europa League] and Man City didn't win anything. They are under pressure,' Herrera said. 'They are obligated to win something. They have more obligation than us.

'City have spent the biggest amount in the Premier League so they are the principle contenders for the title. We have quality as well. But because of the money they have spent they are the favourites.

'We will try to be there. There is pressure when you spend a lot but there is also pressure on us because we are the biggest club in England.

'But you know when you play for United that you are under an obligation to win things and I like that obligation.'

Only alphabetical order separates Manchester United and their local rivals Manchester City

Herrera - who is ready to sign a new contract at Old Trafford - also suggested there is no better goalkeeper in world football than David De Gea.

The 28-year-old believes De Gea will remain at United for years to come despite persistent interest from Real Madrid.

'I respect all the keepers like Manuel Neuer, Gianluigi Buffon and Marc-Andre ter Stegen but David right now is the number one in the world,' Herrera added.

'He wants to be a legend at the club which is important for us. He has that quality. In Spanish we say it comes from God. He makes a difference. He intimidates strikers.

'David is really happy at the moment because we are fighting for everything. Real Madrid are going to talk about it every summer because he is the best keeper in the world. But we don't think we are far from Real Madrid.'

Meanwhile, Luke Shaw - who has not played since April - is set to be named in Mourinho’s squad for the League Cup tie at Burton Albion on Wednesday night.

HERRERA: JOB DONE IN LISBON

Ander Herrera says he and his Manchester United team-mates are delighted to be in the "best position possible" in Champions League Group A following Wednesday's 1-0 win away to Benfica.

Marcus Rashford's free-kick, which young Eagles keeper Mile Svilar couldn't prevent from going over the line, was enough to seal a hard-fought victory in Lisbon and make it three wins from three in Europe's premier competition for the Reds.

Herrera insists the aim now is to ensure qualification for the knock-out stages with another win over Benfica when they visit Old Trafford on 31 October, and the midfielder says the players are feeling strong in every game.

"We have been solid, not only in the Champions League, but during the whole season," he told ManUtd.com. "We still have to improve of course, we have only played around 11/12 games, but we are really solid and in a good moment.

"We have nine points and are in the best position possible, so we are very happy. Now, we still have two games at home which are important for us. It's another clean sheet, we conceded almost no chances which is not easy when you come to Portugal. I have played here before and normally they create a lot of chances, but we didn't let them. Of course we want to keep improving and creating more chances but we are happy with three points and nine points in the group.

"We have to play against Benfica at home now and I think, with 12 points, we will be qualified which is very important," he added. "When you get results, you get more confidence and you play better. We hope we can continue to do that."

Herrera was also full of praise for Rashford, who had caused Svilar a number of problems from set-pieces in the lead-up to his excellent winner.

"Marcus has a great shot, we know that," declared Ander. "It was important in this match because he made it very difficult for the keeper. He had to run back to the goal, that's why the ball went inside [the line]. We trust in Marcus a lot because he has a fantastic shot."

Manchester United ready to activate one-year extension on Ander Herrera contract if they fail to agree new deal

* Manchester United are hopeful of agreeing fresh terms with Ander Herrera
* They retain the right to extend his contact by 12 months should talks drag on
* Negotiations with his representatives have been going on since last November
* United made a similar move to tie Marouane Fellaini to the club in January

Manchester United will activate the 12-month option on Ander Herrera’s contract if negotiations over a new deal continue to drag on.

United are hopeful that Herrera will agree terms, and the Spain midfielder is understood to be very keen to stay at Old Trafford.

But talks with his representatives have been going on since last November, and United are conscious that Herrera will be a free agent next summer and free to talk to foreign clubs in January.

That appears unlikely to happen with Herrera settled at the club and his representatives said to be ‘relaxed’ over the situation.

But United are ready to protect their investment just in case by triggering the one-year extension in the four-year contract Herrera signed with the club when he arrived from Athletic Bilbao in a £30million deal in the summer of 2014.

United made a similar move to tie Marouane Fellaini to the club for another 12 months in January. Talks are underway over a new deal but the Belgium midfielder’s representatives are understood to have rejected an opening offer.

Manchester United may activate a clause in Ander Herrera's contract to extend it by 12 months. Talks with Herrera's representatives over a new deal have dragged for almost an entire year

Although Herrera was United’s Player of the Year last season, his opportunities have been limited by the arrival of Nemanja Matic.

The 28-year-old had to wait a month of the new season before making his first Premier League start, but has returned to the line-up since Paul Pogba suffered a hamstring injury last month.

Herrera played alongside Matic again in Wednesday night’s 1-0 win over Benfica that preserved United’s 100 per cent record in the Champions League and put Jose Mourinho’s side on the brink of qualifying for the knockout phase.

‘We have been solid, not only in the Champions League, but during the whole season,’ said Herrera. ‘We still have to improve of course, we have only played around 11 or12 games, but we are really solid and in a good moment.

‘We have nine points and are in the best position possible, so we are very happy. Now, we still have two games at home which are important for us. It’s another clean sheet and we conceded almost no chances which is not easy when you come to Portugal.

‘We have to play against Benfica at home now and I think, with 12 points, we will be qualified which is very important.’

United returned from Portugal with doubts over Marcus Rashford’s fitness for Saturday’s trip to Huddersfield.

Rashford claimed the only goal of the game after Benfica’s teenage keeper Mile Svilar carried his freekick over the line in the second half, but went off complaining of discomfort in his knee.

Phil Jones is expected to return against Huddersfield after sitting on the bench at the Estadio da Luz, but Eric Bailly is expected to miss out again.

Meanwhile, the first English players to sign up for the Common Goal initiative launched by United midfielder Juan Mata will be announced on Friday.

Turkey defender Hasan Ali Kaldirim became the 10th player to pledge at least one per cent of his earnings to the charitable cause on Thursday, but the addition of two Premier League names is being seen as a significant breakthrough for the foundation after Sportsmail revealed that no Englishmen had signed up to it.

HERRERA UPSET WITH UNITED PERFORMANCE

Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera says everybody will analyse the 2-1 defeat at Huddersfield Town and get to the bottom of what happened at the John Smith's Stadium.

The Reds struggled to match the home team's spirit, particularly in the first half, and were unable to retrieve a 2-0 half-time deficit, although substitute Marcus Rashford did pull a goal back. There were no excuses from last term's United Player of the Year, who stressed there would be an inquest into the damaging loss.

With Manchester City beating Burnley 3-0, United have lost ground on our neighbours in the table and the below-par display in the opening of the match has cost Jose Mourinho's men. The boss suggested after the game that he agreed with Herrera's assessment about the team's attitude but the side must regroup ahead of Tuesday night's Carabao Cup tie at Swansea City and next weekend's big match with Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford.

"It was a very tough day because we had a big chance to keep winning games," Herrera told MUTV. "We didn’t do it. They were more aggressive in the first half and played with more passion in the first 30-35 minutes.

"After that, we came back into the game well and tried to play side to side. We put in a lot of crosses but, when you’re losing 2-0 against such a passionate team, it’s not easy to equal the game. But we now have to analyse why we lost. We cannot concede what we did in the first 30-35 minutes and this is the Premier League, it’s not easy.

"We [just] have to analyse that between us, I don’t think it’s time to talk here now. We have to speak between us, but that’s what happened. They were more passionate in the first 30 minutes."

Herrera felt United could have scrambled a late equaliser despite not being at our best throughout a game played in strong wind and driving rain.

"I had one chance with my head and Chris Smalling, in the last few seconds also, but when you are playing against such a passionate team, they are all going to defend, even the crowd as well," he added.

"They deserve the victory. We didn’t do enough to get the three points and we cannot think now that we have lost everything because we still have to play a lot of games. We now have two very tough Premier League games, you never know, you can win against anyone and lose against anyone.

"You want the opportunity to play again as quickly as possible and that’s what’s going to happen again against Swansea."

Manchester United star Ander Herrera says he has a 'fantastic relationship' with Jose Mourinho despite angering boss with Huddersfield comments

* Ander Herrera has maintained a 'fantastic' relationship with Jose Mourinho
* The Manchester United manager was unhappy with Herrera's recent comments
* Herrera claimed Huddersfield 'had more passion' than United in their victory

Ander Herrera insists he has a 'fantastic relationship' with Jose Mourinho as he called on Manchester United to recover in the Premier League title race against Tottenham.

Spain midfielder Herrera angered United boss Mourinho with his comments after the shock defeat at Huddersfield last weekend, saying the Terriers had played with 'more passion'.

Mourinho put United's defeat in west Yorkshire down to a 'really bad attitude' and said he could not explain Herrera's remarks.

But United returned to winning ways with a 2-0 Carabao Cup victory at Swansea on Tuesday night and Herrera was determined to silence talk of a rift between him and Mourinho.

'We have a fantastic relationship, but what I said was that in the first 30 minutes they had a better attitude than us,' Herrera said.

'That's what happened. But after that we had a good attitude and we were even close to drawing the game, which is not so easy after playing bad the first 30 minutes.

'But now we want to forget what happened on Saturday. We want to move forward for a massive game against Tottenham and try to win.

'After the defeat at Huddersfield we needed good feelings back, because when you lose a game you want to play as quick as possible and play well.'

Second-placed United go into Saturday's game at Old Trafford above Spurs on goal difference.

Ander Herrera says he shares a good relationship with Manchester United's Jose Mourinho. The Manchester United manager was angered by Herrera's comments at the weekend. Herrera said Huddersfield had 'more passion' than his United side during the 2-1 defeat. Herrera says Manchester United were never going to win every game 4-0 this season

It is the start of a huge eight days for United who welcome Benfica in the Champions League on Tuesday before hosting Chelsea the following Sunday.

'It is a big week, but Tottenham is our target now,' Herrera said. 'It is a tough game and Tottenham is a direct rival for the title.

'They are there every season. In the last two or three years they have improved a lot and they are contenders for everything; for the Champions League, for both cups and for the league.

'We saw the game they played with Real Madrid and they were not worse than them. So that means they are ready for anything.'

The impressive nature of United's victory at Swansea - courtesy of Jesse Lingard's first brace for the club - was a timely boost given the performances since the last international break.

United had found little fluency in a goalless draw at Liverpool and a 1-0 win at Benfica before losing at Huddersfield.

But Herrera said: 'You cannot play every game of the season at your best - you can't win 4-0 every game.

'It's true we didn't create too many chances at Liverpool, and in Benfica we controlled the match but also didn't create as many chances as we would like.

'But I think we have got some very good feelings back now and this is what we need to face Tottenham.'

Pesan Natal dari Herrera untuk Si Pengarang Cerita
Randy Prasatya - detikSport

The Foxes unggul lebih dulu berkat aksi Jamie Vardy.
