The boss has said that Sergio Romero will play in goal against the Hornets, in place of David De Gea, who claimed his first Golden Glove after keeping his 18th league clean sheet in Thursday night’s goalless draw at West Ham United.

Meanwhile, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford will start after the pair were both on the bench against the Hammers, having started last week’s match at Brighton.

Mourinho had already confirmed prior to the stalemate at the London Stadium that captain Michael Carrick will start Sunday’s league finale, for what will be the 36-year-old midfielder’s final appearance at Old Trafford before hanging up his boots at the end of the season to take up a coaching role among Jose’s staff.

EARLY TEAM NEWS: UNITED V WATFORD

Jose Mourinho has confirmed he will make further changes for Manchester United’s final Premier League game of the season against Watford and has already confirmed the identity of four starters for Sunday’s match.

“Romero plays on Sunday because he deserves that and some other players are going to play because we as a team achieve the second position and we as a team are going to play the FA Cup final,” the boss told reporters after Thursday’s game.

“It is normal that Michael Carrick is captain at Old Trafford for the last game of his career. David De Gea will be rested, so it gives a chance for Sergio Romero to play. I can make changes.

“Marcus and Anthony played against Brighton. Today it was for Alexis and [Jesse] Lingard to play and Sunday is again for Martial and Rashford.”

The Reds will look to sign off the 2017/18 league campaign with a victory on Sunday, with kick-off at 15:00 BST at the Theatre of Dreams, ahead of the Emirates FA Cup final against Chelsea at Wembley on Saturday 19 May.

MATCH PREVIEW: MANCHESTER UNITED V WATFORD

Setting the scene: The Reds welcome Watford to Old Trafford for our final Premier League game of the 2017/18 season on Sunday afternoon. After being held to a goalless draw at West Ham United on Thursday night, United will look to sign off the league campaign on a high with a victory over the Hornets, who are safely in mid-table and merely playing for pride on the final day. With Champions League football for next season and second place already assured, the focus for Jose Mourinho’s men is building confidence and momentum ahead of the Emirates FA Cup final against Chelsea at Wembley next weekend.

How can I follow it? The match kicks off at 15:00 BST and will not be screened live by any UK broadcaster. But fear not, as subscribers to MUTV (available on Sky and Virgin Media, or via the club’s MUTV app or online at MUTV.com) will be able to follow all the build-up on the Match Day show from 13:00 BST and listen to full radio commentary of the game, before watching it in full at midnight. You can also keep up with all the action as it happens via ManUtd.com’s live match blog and by following the club’s official Twitter account @ManUtd.

Any team news for me? The boss has already confirmed the identity of seven starters for Sunday’s game, with Sergio Romero, Eric Bailly, Daley Blind, Michael Carrick, Juan Mata, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial all set to play. But Belgian duo Marouane Fellaini and Romelu Lukaku are unavailable, with the manager hopeful top scorer Lukaku will be fit enough for at least a place on the bench in next week’s final.

How about Watford? The Hornets are set to be without six players for Sunday’s match, including former Reds midfielder Tom Cleverley, who has a hamstring injury. Two defenders in Younes Kaboul (fractured metatarsal) and Tommie Hoban (ACL knee injury) plus midfielder Nathaniel Chalobah (knee) and forwards Stefano Okaka (thigh) and Andre Carrillo (groin) are also expected to be sidelined.

How are the visitors doing?
A winless run of seven games leading up to last weekend’s crucial game against Newcastle United had left Watford looking nervously over their shoulder at the bottom three, but a strong performance and 2-1 win over the Magpies at Vicarage Road guaranteed their top-flight status for a fourth successive season next term. The Hornets, however, have struggled away from home and have recorded just one solitary point on their travels since Javi Gracia was appointed manager in January – in a goalless draw at Stoke City, who have been relegated. But a first win at Old Trafford since October 1978 would enable the Hertfordshire outfit to finish as high as 10th, as Newcastle, Crystal Palace and Bournemouth are presently all locked on the same 41-point tally as the Hornets.

What happened last time we played Watford?
The Reds will have fond memories of November’s clash against the side then managed by Marco Silva, which delivered a thrilling – if nerve-jangling – 4-2 win, that was ultimately decided by a sensational solo effort from Jesse Lingard. Ashley Young’s first United goal in 18 months put us ahead, and the full-back doubled the lead against his former club with a stunning free-kick. Anthony Martial extended the advantage to 3-0 later in the first half, before Watford fought back in the second period through a Troy Deeney penalty and an instinctive finish from the club’s Player of the Year, Abdoulaye Doucoure. But Lingard settled matters late on with a sublime solo effort in a thriller under the lights at Vicarage Road.

Who is in charge of Watford? Javi Gracia is the current man at the helm, with the 48-year-old Spaniard appointed on 21 January following the sacking of former Hull City boss Silva after a poor run of form. But former Malaga, Rubin Kazan and Osasuna manager Gracia has presided over just four victories from 14 games in charge to date, drawing three and losing the other seven of those matches.

What’s our record like against them? United have won 13 of the last 14 encounters with Watford in all competitions, including the last four meetings between the sides at Old Trafford. The most recent was a 2-0 victory in February 2017, when goals from Mata and Martial sealed a routine three points for the Reds. The Hornets have recorded just a solitary victory in 12 previous trips to the Theatre of Dreams – a League Cup third-round triumph in October 1978 in which Luther Blissett scored both goals in a 2-1 win. Overall, United have a positive record of 19 wins from 29 previous encounters with Watford in all competitions, with five draws and five defeats. That makes for a win ratio of 65.52 per cent – which is our highest against any side currently competing in the Premier League.

One to watch: A shining light in Watford’s indifferent season, Abdoulaye Doucoure has been mightily impressive in the Hornets engine room and is the club’s top scorer. The French midfielder has chipped in with seven goals, including one in the reverse fixture against the Reds at Vicarage Road, and registered four assists in all competitions. Doucoure deservedly swept up at the club’s Player of the Year awards this week, taking home the fans’ and players’ accolades, and has been linked with a move to some top clubs this summer. The United midfield will have to keep a close eye on the irrepressible 25-year-old, who has certainly made a name for himself this term.

A fitting farewell… Club captain Carrick will make his 464th and final appearance for the Reds against Watford, before retiring at the end of the season and becoming part of Mourinho’s coaching staff for next term. The boss has confirmed he will substitute the 36-year-old, who has won 18 trophies during his successful 12-year career at United, during the game in order for the veteran midfielder to receive a richly deserved standing ovation from the Old Trafford faithful. Let’s hope the Reds can mark Michael's day with a win.

Did you know? Sunday’s match will be the 1,000th Premier League game in our history, and our 500th in the competition at Old Trafford. Only five other teams - Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool and Tottenham - will reach that landmark this weekend, with every other club currently in the top flight spending at least one season since 1992 in a lower division. During the 999 games played so far, the Reds have racked up 628 victories, 215 draws and 156 defeats, scoring 1,923 goals, conceding 875 and winning a record 13 titles.

Home rule: The Reds have not lost the final home game of a Premier League season since 2006/07, when West Ham won 1-0 at Old Trafford thanks to a goal from Carlos Tevez, who of course went on to represent the Reds. United had already been crowned champions, and West Ham needed to win to avoid relegation, which they did at the expense of Sheffield United, who lost 2-1 to Wigan Athletic.

What do you think the result will be? Get involved and make your prediction with the Manchester United Score Predictor and win amazing prizes throughout the season with Marathonbet.

Who’s the referee? Lee Mason will take charge of his first match at Old Trafford this season, and his second United game in total after handling the Reds’ 2-1 defeat at Huddersfield back in October – in which he booked six players, including United duo Martial and Young. The Bolton-based whistler has brandished 67 yellow cards, sent off four players and awarded six penalties in 25 games in all competitions this term. He will be assisted by Matthew Wilkes and Mick McDonough, with Neil Swarbrick appointed as the fourth official.

MANCHESTER UNITED 1 WATFORD 0

Sunday 13 May | Premier League | Old Trafford | Attendance: 75,049 | Scorer: Rashford 34'

Manchester United ended the Premier League campaign with a welcome return to winning ways as a first-half goal from Marcus Rashford proved enough to see off Watford.

The day was, of course, dominated by the farewell to Michael Carrick. Both squads lined up at the tunnel before the match to give the Reds’ retiring captain a guard of honour in his final Old Trafford match as a player. It was the 36-year-old’s 464th appearance since his 2006 move from Spurs.

There was also a big pre-match standing ovation for David De Gea as he received his Golden Glove award for the most clean sheets in the Premier League this season, having notched up 18 personal shut-outs.

The Spaniard was rested for the game against the Hornets as manager Jose Mourinho made wholesale changes ahead of next Saturday’s Emirates FA Cup final versus Chelsea.

There was also an extremely warm welcome for members of United’s European Cup-winning squad from 1968, to mark the forthcoming 50th anniversary of the 4-1 Wembley win against Benfica. Eight of them - Denis Law, Paddy Crerand, David Sadler, John Fitzpatrick, Sir Bobby Charlton, Jim Ryan, Jimmy Rimmer and Alex Stepney - were introduced to the crowd shortly before kick-off.

Due to the ‘dead rubber’ status of the match, with United already guaranteed second spot and Watford comfortably safe from relegation a while ago, it was a lethargic start in the Old Trafford sunshine with limited goalmouth action. Then, in the 33rd minute, Carrick rolled back the years and put his own personal stamp on his farewell with a glorious pass to start the move for United’s winning goal.

From his own half of the field, he guided a measured pass forward to pick out the run of Juan Mata. The Spaniard had ghosted in behind Watford’s rearguard and he brilliantly controlled Carrick’s pass as it dropped out of the sun. Marcus Rashford had made strides to join the attack and Mata unselfishly squared for the Mancunian to side-foot the ball home. It was a classy move from start to finish and a memorable, typical, Carrick involvement.

Sergio Romero had been a spectator for most of the first half but his concentration was tested just before the interval and the Argentinian certainly stood up to the task. De Gea would have been proud to have had Romero’s save from Richarlison’s point-blank header in his own portfolio. But rather than milk the applause, the goalkeeper was swiftly ready to stop a follow-up shot from Gerard Deulofeu. It was a great piece of goalkeeping that sent the Reds into the dressing room at half-time with the 1-0 lead still intact.

The second half became even more of an end-of-season stroll as the baking sun drained the players. Midway through the half, Old Trafford rose as one in support of Sir Alex Ferguson as he continues his recovery in hospital following his brain haemorrhage last weekend.

When substitute Ander Herrera stripped off his tracksuit top on the bench, the crowd seemed to sense this was the final bow for Carrick as they sang his name but Mourinho threw a curve ball as he brought off Daley Blind instead in the 77th minute.

The acclaim for Carrick finally arrived in the 84th minute as one of Sir Alex Ferguson’s many superb purchases finally left the stage. He stripped off his armband, handed it to Mata, and all the United players made their way over to the departing midfielder as he walked to the touchline, arms aloft as he recognised the ovation from the stadium.

Carrick turned to all four corners of Old Trafford, touched the United crest on his shirt and then he wrapped his arms around his replacement Paul Pogba. A bear hug in the technical area from Mourinho followed before he made his way to the bench following the goodbyes. All of it was fitting recognition for a multi-medal winning United legend.

The Reds’ crowd may have wanted more goals to end the season on an even bigger high but perhaps it was right and proper that the last strike of the Premier League campaign involved a touch of Carrick elegance. THE LINE-UPS

United:
Romero, Bailly, Rojo, Blind (Herrera 76), Darmian, Carrick (c) (Pogba 84), Mata, Young (Shaw 60), McTominay, Rashford, Alexis.

Subs not used: J.Pereira, Jones, Valencia, Lingard.

Booked: Rojo, Young, McTominay, Shaw.

Watford: Gomes (c), Janmaat, Cathcart, Kabasele (Mariappa 20), Holebas, Doucouré, Hughes, Deulofeu (Deeney 63), Pereyra, Richarlison, Gray (Chalobah 72).

Subs not used: Bachmann, Prodl, Lukebakio, Sinclair.

Booked: None.

TALKING POINT

Carrick is a class act
Around 18 months ago, Jose Mourinho reflected that he wished Michael Carrick was 10 years younger - and so say all of us. In his final Old Trafford match, the 36-year-old gave us all one last reminder of how much of a Rolls Royce he was, as Paul Scholes once described him. Even classic Rolls Royces end up having to be garaged permanently at some point but all owners will remember them fondly. Thanks for the memories Michael.

WHAT'S NEXT FOR UNITED?

It’s the big one. The Emirates FA Cup Final at Wembley against Chelsea on Saturday 19 May, kick-off 17:15 BST. United have one last shot at a piece of silverware as Antonio Conte’s side stand in the way.

Default Re: [EPL] Manchester United vs Watford

JOSE REACTS TO WIN OVER WATFORD

Jose Mourinho feels Manchester United can take plenty of positives from the Premier League season, after signing off the 2017/18 campaign with a narrow victory over Watford.

Marcus Rashford’s first-half goal saw the Reds beat the Hornets 1-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday, on captain Michael Carrick’s 464th and (almost certainly) final appearance for the club before he hangs up his boots at the end of the season.

Here is what the boss had to say after the game in his post-match interview with MUTV…

ASSESSMENT OF SEASON DEPENDS ON PERSPECTIVE
"It depends the way you want to analyse it. If you want to be positive and respect the effort of everyone and the clear numbers and pragmatic numbers of the improvement, you say all positive things – the best position for five years, a huge amount of points that would normally give a fight for the title until the last few weeks, lots of clean sheets, Golden Glove, more goals than last season and the second-best team in the country. Also, in the second major competition in the country, we are one of the two best teams; we are playing the final [against Chelsea in the FA Cup] so if you want to read it in a positive way, you can in a very objective way. But if you want to be negative, you can always be negative. You can be negative until the point that you say that Scott McTominay, who is a kid who arrived here at nine years old, is not good enough. So if you want to be negative, you can be negative without dimensions."

THE END OF CARRICK AS A PLAYER BUT THE START OF A COACH
"You know, I had similar situations with other big players. I will never forget Luis Figo’s last match at Inter Milan. Michael is different because he’s staying with us. It’s the end of a player but it’s the start of a coach and he stays at the club and he stays with us, so he’s not so hard."

I COULD COME UP AGAINST RUI FARIA IN THE FUTURE
"Yes [it feels like the end of an era] but maybe one day we are playing against each other in the Premier League. If that moment arrives, I will be a very proud guy because this man came to me when he was a kid 17 years ago so, if that happens, I will be a very proud guy."

WE’LL FOCUS ON FA CUP FINAL FROM TUESDAY
"One day off to disconnect a little bit but then, of course, on Tuesday we start thinking about the last week of work and the last week of work is for a final, so we don’t need more motivation than what we have."
