Scholes is Barclays Player of the Month

Paul Scholes is the Barclays Player of the Month for August after he helped Manchester United remain unbeaten.

The former England playmaker gave a midfield master class in Manchester United's opening match of the season, setting up goals for Dimitar Berbatov and Ryan Giggs in the 3-0 win over Newcastle United at Old Trafford.

Scholes continued his great form with a trademark drive from the edge of the area to give the Red Devils an early lead in the 2-2 draw at Fulham - his 150th goal for the club.

Glittering Career

He ended the month by playing a key role in the 3-0 home win over West Ham United to help United finish the month in third place in the Barclays Premier League table.

The evergreen midfielder has now received the award four times in his glittering career and is only one behind Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard in the all-time list. He is tied on four awards with Alan Shearer, Cristiano Ronaldo, Frank Lampard, Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp.

Ancelotti wins Barclays Manager of the Month

Carlo Ancelotti is August's Barclays Manager of the Month after Chelsea took nine points from three matches.

The Barclays Premier League champions picked up where they left off last campaign by putting six goals past newly promoted West Bromwich Albion at Stamford Bridge, including a hat-trick from striker Didier Drogba.

The Blues then repeated the feat with an equally dominant 6-0 win away at Wigan Athletic in the Barclays Premier League.

The champions rounded off the month by beating Stoke City 2-0 at home and find themselves in familiar territory at the top of the Barclays Premier League table.

Taking Control

Carlo Ancelotti was the only manager to see his team win all three of their matches in August, and has made a perfect start in his pursuit of a second consecutive Barclays Premier League title.

This is the second time Ancelotti has won the Barclays Manager of the Month award since taking control at Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2009.

Southgate launches Barclays Community Award

The Barclays Community Sports Award has been launched by former England defender Gareth Southgate.

The honour is to recognise the outstanding contribution to grassroots sports by individuals and groups across the UK.

The brand new award will be presented monthly to complement the Barclays Player and Manager of the Month Awards presented to the best performers in the Barclays Premier League throughout the season.

The award will ensure those working in community sport have the opportunity to receive acclaim for their achievements in the same way that those at the top of the professional football game are recognised every month.

The accolade is being delivered in a partnership between Barclays Spaces for Sports, the Premier League's Creating Chances programme and the Football Foundation.

VIP trip

Former Crystal Palace, Aston Villa and Middlesbrough player Southgate, who is heading up the judging panel for the award, said: "Those who have played at the top of professional sport are used to receiving the plaudits and enjoy a fantastic and privileged position in sport. However, sport is much bigger than the top end of professional games and is a fundamental part of communities in every part of the UK.

"Without volunteers, groups pushing to get people involved and not for profit organisations helping deliver access to sport for millions of people across the country, sport would not be such a force for good and a major part of our country's culture.

"I am therefore delighted to be involved in the Barclays Community Sports Award and look forward to celebrating the great work taking place in our communities throughout the UK. It is fantastic to have the opportunity to give something back to those who help others benefit from sport."

Each monthly winner will receive £1,000 for their group or organisation, a limited edition trophy and will be entered into the end-of-season award to win a further £5,000, all donated by Barclays Spaces for Sports. The end of season award winner will also receive a VIP trip to London to receive their award from Gareth Southgate.
