Re: [Pre-season] AIK Fotboll vs Manchester United
Reds to play in Sweden
• Game v AIK Fotboll as part of the Manchester United 2013 Tour, presented by Aon (NYSE:MANU) Premier League champions Manchester United will play a pre-season match against AIK in Stockholm as part of its 2013 Tour, presented by Aon. The game will take place on Tuesday 6 August 2013 at Friends Arena. Manchester United chief executive David Gill said: "I’m delighted that the final game of our preparations for the 2013/14 season will be in the magnificent new home of Swedish football. This match is our first against AIK and will provide a tough test for the players as the new campaign approaches. "As a club, we have visited Sweden many times and, of course, one of our Treble winners of 1999, Jesper Blomqvist, appeared 30 times for the Swedish national team, as well as playing – and scoring – against United for Gothenburg in the Champions League." Thomas Perslund, CEO of Friends Arena, said: "We are proud to have Manchester United at Friends Arena and I am sure this game against AIK will be unforgettable for the football fans coming on 6 August." AIK managing director Thomas Edselius said: "From AIK’s side, we are looking forward to this opportunity to play against one of the most successful clubs in the world. Our ambition is to consistently play in the European cups and we are therefore always interested in playing against top-level European clubs. "We are proud that Manchester United has chosen AIK for this match. We are also very excited about this game where the two biggest clubs in Sweden and England have the opportunity to play for the first time." Aon is delighted to be the presenting partner of Manchester United’s 2013 Tour, offering its expertise in risk management, insurance, reinsurance brokerage and human resources solutions. Greg Case, president and chief executive officer of Aon, said: "Aon’s partnership with Manchester United is as valuable in Sweden as it is in Asia or Latin America. Being the presenting partner for Tour 2013 gives Aon colleagues in Sweden and around the world a tremendous opportunity to demonstrate what we do for clients, and how the issues we help them with, including risk, talent, health, retirement, and data and analytics, are equally important in the worlds of business and sport." Re: [Pre-season] AIK Fotboll vs Manchester United
Profile: AIK Fotboll
Here we take a brief look at AIK Fotboll, the Swedish side United will face in Stockholm on 6 August... The opposition AIK Fotboll, or Allmänna Idrottsklubben (roughly: The Public Sports Club), was founded in 1891 as a general sports club for the people of Stockholm. It wasn’t until 1896 that football was introduced but by 1900 AIK had collected its first Swedish silverware. Since the current league’s formation (the Allsvenskan, established in 1924), they’ve won the title five times – most recently in 2009 – and finished second on 11 occasions. That makes them, historically, the third most successful club in Sweden, behind Malmo FF and IFK Goteborg. AIK also hold the rather bizarre honour of winning the 1998 title by scoring the fewest goals of any team in the division (25 in 26 games). The venue August’s match will take place in the new national stadium, Friends Arena, which was officially opened with a friendly against England in November 2012 (you may remember Zlatan Ibrahimovic netted four that night, including one sublime overhead kick from 30 yards). So, Wayne Rooney, Tom Cleverley, Danny Welbeck and Wilfried Zaha will already be familiar with the high-tech venue. AIK have used the ground since March 2013 after leaving behind the Rasunda Stadium, a venue that hosted the 1958 World Cup final. Manager Andreas Alm is a young manager (he's just five months older than Ryan Giggs) who has been in charge at AIK since December 2010. A former player at the club between 2000 and 2003, he initially moved onto the coaching staff as an assistant manager in November 2008. As a coach he played a key role in helping guide AIK to the league and cup double in 2009 but has yet to taste major success since he was promoted to the top job. Star man Young midfielder Robin Quaison has lit up the Allsvenskan this past 12 months with a string of fine performances for AIK. Although only 19 he’s already forced his way into the Sweden senior team (Robin is of Ghanaian descent but was born in Stockholm) thanks to his superb passing and vision. In some quarters, he’s already been nicknamed “the Scandinavian Xavi”. Last season The Allsvenskan runs from April to November, so by the time United arrive in August AIK will be well and truly in gear. Last term the side finished fourth, narrowly missing out on a Europa League qualifying position. Did you know? Six different Englishmen have managed AIK – as far back as former Tottenham player Jimmy Elliott between 1932 and 1934 and as recently as Richard Money (currently in charge at Cambridge United) in 2003 and 2004. In between, George Raynor (1948-52), Frank Soo (1958), Keith Spurgeon (1975) and Stuart Baxter (1998-99) all took the reins in the Swedish capital. HTML Code:

Re: [Pre-season] AIK Fotboll vs Manchester United
Lingard eyes Sweden chance
30/07/2013 09:45, Report by James Tuck Jesse Lingard wants to continue the promising form he has shown on Manchester United's pre-season tour in the game against AIK Fotboll in Stockholm on 6 August. It may be a friendly but it's shaping up to be a big game for the Reds as it's the final chance for players to stake their claim for a place in David Moyes' side before the Community Shield at the end of the week. The fixture against the high-flying Swedish outfit could also mark the return of the players who missed the first five tour games, including Wayne Rooney, Nemanja Vidic, Antonio Valencia and Javier Hernandez. Lingard just hopes to be involved after netting four times on tour, including spectacular strikes against the A-League All Stars in Sydney and Kitchee FC in Hong Kong. "Hopefully I'll get the chance to play in Sweden and even get among the goals, to keep me in the manager's thoughts," the 20-year-old told ManUtd.com. "AIK are in the middle of their season and will probably be a little fitter than us, as we'll still be in the final stages of building up to the new campaign. But it should be an entertaining game and we have a lot of support in Scandinavia, so the reception will be good too." |

Re: [Pre-season] AIK Fotboll vs Manchester United
Schmeichel: AIK a key game
31/07/2013 15:19, Report by Adam Marshall Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel believes the last fixture of the 2013 Tour presented by Aon against AIK Fotball will be a key one for David Moyes. The new Reds boss will have the full squad at his disposal for the first time since taking over in the summer and must be starting to think about his line-up for the start of the defence of the Barclays Premier League title. Goalkeeping great Schmeichel is eagerly anticipating the new era at Old Trafford and warns that the club's rivals are waiting to pile on the pressure. "AIK will be very fit, the Scandinavian season is ongoing at the moment and any team you play from this region will be match-fit," Schmeichel stressed to ManUtd.com. "There will be a gap in terms of skill and I expect United to be fit as well but a little off the pace in terms of how we play in pre-season. "It’s still one of the most important games David Moyes has had. The thing is the result doesn’t matter but we as players know this is not about losing anything. These are the games where you have to start winning. In terms of the Community Shield, it’s one of those where it doesn’t matter how much we do beforehand, we are always going to go into the season under pressure. "It doesn’t matter how well we’ve played or how much we’ve done commercially. Everyone wants to have a dig and you can see that by some clubs' activity as they are going out and dealings have been done at Manchester City and Chelsea. Arsenal are making £40million bids. We’ve never seen that before. They are looking at this as an opportunity to put pressure on the players and the manager and the club right from the word go. "The AIK game is played more or less at UK time, when people can watch it live. We need to win this game and try and keep the pressure down and keep the media, more or less, quiet. But we know it’s not going to happen. It is something we have to accept because we are Manchester United but it doesn't help anyone." The Treble-winner believes Moyes will have a firm plan in his mind in terms of his personnel for the opener at Swansea City by the time the Community Shield against Wigan Athletic comes around. "I think the new manager will want to have his starting XI for the first game of the season and play that in the Community Shield," explained Schmeichel. "AIK is a nice game to have and also the last one probably for the players to stake that claim for a place in the XI. "So it’s very, very important. This happens in pre-season every year as the players who won the Premier League finish and go off on international duty. In that respect, Manchester United are always hit more than other clubs because most of the players are internationals. They are playing well into June and everyone needs that break because you require at least four weeks off. "It’s the end of the tour now and most players have been back for a few weeks and are coming into form. A few players have been injured. We’re expecting Wayne [Rooney] to play in Stockholm and hopefully that will put a lid on all the debate about his future." |
