Europe's leading clubs and UEFA set to announce price cap on away tickets for Champions League and Europa League fixtures following row between Manchester United and Barcelona

* A working group was set up in 2018 by the European Club Association and UEFA
* Liverpool and Bayern fans complained about prices at Anderlecht and Porto
* Europe's leading clubs are now set to agree a price cap on European away tickets
* Manchester United reacted to Barcelona charging their supporters £102 each

The continent's leading clubs and European football's governing body UEFA are set to announce a cap on ticket prices for away fans in European club competitions.

A working group was set up last year by the European Club Association and UEFA following complaints from Bayern Munich and Liverpool fans about ticket prices at Anderlecht and Porto, respectively.

Many Bayern fans boycotted their game against Anderlecht in November 2017 when the Belgian side raised the cost of tickets to 100 euros, or £85, while Liverpool objected to Porto charging their fans three times as much as local supporters for a Champions League game.

Lessons were clearly learned from the latter example, as Liverpool and Porto have bilaterally agreed to keep prices down for each others' fans in their Champions League quarter-final next month, with Porto agreeing to reduce the cost of an away ticket from a planned £73 to £52.

But there was no such cooperation between Barcelona and Manchester United, with the Premier League side deciding to subsidise the £102 cost of an away ticket at the Nou Camp by charging Barca fans the same price at Old Trafford.

That type of tit-for-tat pricing, however, could become a thing of the past.

Manchester United will charge Barcelona fans £102 to subsidise tickets for the Nou Camp. Manchester United hit back at Barca after they announced away tickets would cost £102 each

Speaking to reporters at the ECA general assembly in Amsterdam on Tuesday, the organisation's general secretary Michele Centenaro said the matter was discussed by the clubs on Monday and 'a proposal' would now go to the next UEFA club competitions committee on May 14.

ECA vice-chairman Edwin van der Sar, the former Manchester United goalkeeper who is now chief executive of Ajax, said: 'Speaking as a former player, we want vocal fans at games and most of the time that's the support that travels to domestic away games, too.

'We have fans who watch on TV all around the world but I think it's important that we keep football affordable for local fans so they can travel at home and abroad.'

Sitting alongside Van Der Sar was former Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis, who now does the same job at AC Milan.

He agreed with his Ajax counterpart and said Europe should take a leaf out of English football's book with its £30 cap on away tickets.

'The English experience with a cap on away tickets has been really positive,' said Gazidis.

'It was a very good step and was well received and embraced by our fa

WHICH BARCELONA STAR IS MANAGING AN INJURY?

Our upcoming Champions League quarter-final opponents Barcelona maintained a 10-point lead at the top of La Liga over the weekend, by chalking up a 2-0 win over local rivals Espanyol.

Lionel Messi scored twice at the Nou Camp on Saturday, dinking in a superb free-kick after 71 minutes before doubling his tally by finishing off a late counter-attack.

The fleet-footed icon has now scored 31 goals across all competitions this season and netted 22 times in his past 15 Spanish top-flight games.

Impressively, Messi has also now surpassed 40 goals for the 10th season in a row - which is even more remarkable when you consider the revelation that he has been managing an injury since Christmas (more on that below).

It was a fitting way for the Argentinian to mark his 675th Barcelona appearance, which moved him ahead of Andres Iniesta into second on the club's all-time list - and 102 adrift of Xavi Hernandez.

While Messi was clearly the hero, he was perhaps unlucky not to have seen red after appearing to kick out at former Real Madrid and QPR midfielder Esteban Granero while lying on the floor.

IN PAIN SINCE CHRISTMAS

Messi had been described as an injury doubt for the match, after missing Argentina's friendly against Morocco in midweek, but the famed no.10 played a full part in the win and showed no sign of injury.

Barcelona head coach Ernesto Valverde revealed ahead of kick-off that his star man has been in pain with injuries since Christmas and, as a result, the Catalan club has placed their five-time Ballon d'Or winner on a special training plan.

“He has been coping with these issues for a long time,” Valverde said. “We were taking care of it before Christmas. We have tried to make the pain subside and we will continue doing it.

“We do everything naturally, we talk to him after suffering a little problem in training and we do everything together. We make decisions together and talk to him to see how he is.”

Barcelona's starting XI v Espanyol: Ter Stegen, Semedo, Pique, Lenglet, Alba, Rakitic, Busquets, Arthur, Messi, Suarez, Coutinho.

AN IMPORTANT WEEK AHEAD

This is clearly a pivotal and potentially taxing week for Barcelona, who have two pivotal La Liga fixtures to contest.

On Tuesday evening, our Champions League opponents face 17th-placed Villarreal at the always-intimidating Estadio de la Cerámica.

Valverde's team will then focus on the biggest remaining game of their league season, when Atletico Madrid visit the Nou Camp on Saturday evening.

Diego Simeone's men are second in the table, 10 points behind, and determined to fight for the title: “We can't lose sight of the fact that, at any point in La Liga, competing is in our nature,” the former Argentina international said at the weekend. “And we want to compete for La Liga until our last breath.“

A POSSIBLE ADVANTAGE

In contrast to Barcelona, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's United squad only have one match to contest this week - away to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League on Tuesday night.

The Reds do not have a fixture at the weekend, due to the Emirates FA Cup semi-finals taking place.

That means our preparations for the Champions League quarter-final against Barca will begin once the full-time whistle blows at Molineux.

BARCELONA DROP POINTS BY DRAWING AT VILLARREAL

Following the Premier League defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer now has eight days to prepare his Manchester United side for the visit of Barcelona to Old Trafford.

Both clubs suffered domestic setbacks on Tuesday evening, after a pair of surprising results.

The Reds were beaten 2-1 at Molineux Stadium, where Scott McTominay broke the deadlock before a Diogo Jota equaliser and Chris Smalling own goal gave the home side three Premier League points.

Meanwhile, in Spain’s La Liga, runaway leaders Barcelona travelled to Villarreal and recorded an unexpected 4-4 draw against the Yellow Submarine, who are still fighting to avoid relegation.

Barcelona, who had Lionel Messi resting on the bench, took the lead early on with a close-range finish from Philippe Coutinho. Malcom - who assisted the first goal - doubled the visitors' advantage four minutes later.

Spain's reigning champions were in total control at this point and Coutinho nearly doubled his tally when he hit the post, after receiving a delightful pass from Luis Suarez. However, the momentum changed dramatically on the 23-minute mark, when Samuel Chukwueze found the back of the net for the hosts.

Just before half-time, Suarez came close to making it 3-1 when his shot from outside the box nearly found its way into the bottom right left corner, only for Villarreal goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo to produce a top-quality save to deny him.

Villarreal were buoyed by their late rally in the first half, and emerged after the break full of confidence. They soon managed to level the scoreline at 2-2 through Karl Toko Ekambi, who squeezed the ball into the Barcelona net from a tight angle.

With Barça fearful of dropping points, they introduced Messi from the bench. The Argentinian was initially a doubt for the game after it was revealed last week he has been playing through a long-term injury in recent weeks.

Despite the visiting superstar's entrance, it was Villarreal who netted the next goal, through Vicente Iborra just after the hour mark, to go in front at 3-2. Even better was to come - when former Arsenal man Santi Cazorla put Carlos Bacca through 10 minutes from time, the Colombian drove the ball past Marc-Andre ter Stegen to the delight of most fans inside the Estadio de la Ceramica.

Villarreal looked to be on course for a famous 4-2 win against Barcelona, but with Messi around nothing is ever safe. When he was fouled just outside the area, the forward curled in a wonderful free kick, reducing the hosts' advantage to 4-3.

Barcelona continued their push for a fourth goal as the game went on into injury time and left-back Jordi Alba had a shot saved.

The home side conceded an even later corner, and in the dying seconds of the game, Suarez managed to score with a shot from outside the box, remarkably making the final score 4-4.

The agonising draw for Villarreal leaves them in 17th place, while Barcelona go into their weekend game with Atletico Madrid eight points clear at the top.

Default Re: [UCL] Manchester United vs Barcelona

OLE: WE CAN IMPROVE BEFORE BARCA VISIT OLD TRAFFORD

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer plans to make the most of the eight-day preparatory period that Manchester United have for next Wednesday’s Champions League quarter-final first leg against Barcelona.

The Reds do not have a fixture to contest this weekend, due to the Emirates FA Cup semi-finals taking place at Wembley Stadium, and that provides the manager with invaluable time to work with his players at the Aon Training Complex, focusing on potential marginal gains and tactical ideas against the Catalans.

Speaking at his press conference following the Premier League defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Tuesday night, Ole was asked how his squad can improve before the anticipated European tie at Old Trafford.

“Oh, many, many things we have to improve, of course, because they are a top, top side,” Solskjaer told reporters. “But we’ll use one or two days now to analyse and recover. And we’ll prepare for Barcelona, which will be a fantastic challenge for the club and for the team.”

That 2-1 loss at Molineux was United’s third defeat in four matches across all competitions, having recently suffered another loss to Wolves in the FA Cup and a reverse at Arsenal in the Premier League.

Solskjaer does not believe those results represent a resetting of our form, as one journalist suggested in the press conference. Instead, he is upbeat and generally pleased with performances.

“You can’t control the result,” said Ole. “We can control what we do on the pitch, performance wise, and we’ve played well enough tonight [Tuesday]. We created enough chances to win the game.

“So, I don’t think there’s any kick-back or re-setting to be fair. I was very pleased with the amount of chances, and the intent with the way we started the game. You cannot stop players from playing, or trying, and if there’s a mistake to be done then that happens, and that’s football.”

WHO IS AVAILABLE?

That is the big question this week, after Ander Herrera and Marcus Rashford both missed the match at Wolves in midweek due to injury. Whether or not they will be fit enough to face Barcelona is unclear at this stage.

Eric Bailly is also unavailable at present due to a head injury that the defender sustained while representing Ivory Coast during the recent international break.

The centre-back joined Antonio Valencia, Matteo Darmian and Alexis Sanchez on our list of absentees.
