Default Re: Euro 2020

Euro 2020 in danger of being put back until 2021 with UEFA chiefs' plan to finish domestic leagues this summer set for discussion at next week's coronavirus meeting

* UEFA chiefs are considering a plan to postpone Euro 2020 until next year
* UEFA will propose to use the time for any outstanding domestic league matches
* The news comes after Serie A and La Liga were postponed for the next fortnight
* Crisis talks will also take place over the Champions League and Europa League

UEFA will discuss proposals to postpone Euro 2020 until next year during a Coronavirus crisis meeting on Tuesday.

European football's governing body and the European Clubs Association will discuss a number of measures designed to minimise the risk of Covid 19 during a conference call next week.

Sportsmail understands the plan involves delaying this summer's European Championships and cancelling the summer international window at the start of June.

UEFA will then propose to use the time to play any outstanding domestic league games.

The governing body would also look to complete any Champions League and Europa League fixtures in that period.

Nations will vote on those proposals in next weeks' meeting.

The news means a summer of international football is now in danger of not taking place.

Meanwhile, there is growing doubt over the international fixtures at the end of March because of the Coronavirus.

England are due to face Denmark and Italy but both friendlies are expected to be cancelled.

UEFA chiefs are set to discuss postponing this summer's European Championship until 2021

There is an understandable reluctance from clubs across Europe to release their players for friendly games at the end of the month given the risks attached to travelling.

The matter will be part of UEFA's discussed on Tuesday when crisis talks will also be held over the Champions League and Europa League - with cancellation of those competitions also up for discussion.

With the coronavirus outbreak paralysing the continent, European football's governing body will decide how to react.

A statement on their website read: 'In the light of the ongoing developments in the spread of COVID-19 across Europe and the changing analysis of the World Health Organisation, UEFA has today invited representatives of its 55 member associations, together with the boards of the European Club Association and the European Leagues and a representative of FIFPro, to attend meetings by videoconference on Tuesday 17 March to discuss European football's response to the outbreak.

'Discussions will include all domestic and European competitions, including UEFA EURO 2020.

'Further communication will be made following those meetings.'

Serie A and La Liga have suspended matches - and although the Premier League are yet to do so - UEFA could follow suit with the situation becoming almost untenable.

Real Madrid's second leg of their last 16 clash against Manchester City next Tuesday has been called off, with the Spanish side all in quarantine until at least March 27 after a club basketball player tested positive for COVID-19.

Serie A in Italy, along with all top-level sport, is off until April 3.

La Liga in Spain have suspended competition for at least two weeks. A meeting between the Spanish Football Federation, the football union in and the league itself on Thursday resulted in the suspension of the next two matchdays in the top tier.

The Premier League is at present continuing with weekend matches as usual and UEFA will provide an update on their decisions after next Tuesday's meeting.

UEFA to demand massive £275m compensation from clubs and leagues in order to postpone Euro 2020 because of coronavirus outbreak

* UEFA will demand £275million compensation in order to postpone Euro 2020
* The governing body estimates it will cost that amount to move the tournament
* The information will be relayed to European football's stakeholders on Tuesday
* The tournament is expected to be delayed for a year amid the coronavirus crisis

UEFA will reportedly demand £275million from its member clubs and leagues in order to postpone Euro 2020 by a year.

The governing body believes that amount would be required to push back the tournament by 12 months, and will imminently inform this to stakeholders during emergency meetings.

According to The Athletic, confirmation of the year's suspension is expected on Tuesday.

The priority of member leagues remains with completing the current campaign, rather than controversially scrapping any progress and achievements made to date.

There is also a reluctance to rule the season null and void due to the countless legal challenges that could be brought forward by disgruntled clubs.

And the same report states that the majority of clubs across the continent continue to harbour hope that their competitions can be completed during May and June, despite the ongoing global health crisis.

UEFA will reportedly demand £275million from its clubs and leagues to postpone Euro 2020. UEFA are expected to outline their proposals for the season shortly in a series of crisis talks. The immediate future of the Champions League and Europa League will likely be decided too

The potential to prolong the season into July could also be explored, along with the introduction of play-off systems.

UEFA are expected to outline their proposals shortly in a series of crisis talks, and The Athletic also believe that a task force will be set up to explore the organisation's plan.

This would be made up of representatives from UEFA, the European Club Association (ECA) and European Leagues (EL), who would then be expected to put together a potential schedule to dictate how the rest of the action would unfold.

UEFA will first speak with delegates from the ECA and EL boards, plus a representative from FIFPro, on Tuesday with a follow-up meeting involving its 55 member associations then planned.

The immediate future of the Champions League and Europa League will likely be decided, too.

The idea that all remaining ties across both competitions will be discussed via video conference, with the quarter-finals onward potentially becoming a one-off match instead.

Euro 2020 was originally scheduled to kick off on June 12 and take place across 12 host cities, with the semi-finals and final taking place at Wembley exactly a month later.

The likely postponement of the showpiece will have a knock-on effect for the finals of the Nations League, as well as the men's Under 21 and women's European Championships, which could be moved to 2022.

EURO 2020 becomes the biggest sporting event lost to coronavirus, as UEFA push the tournament back until 2021 at crisis meeting and prioritise club football over internationals

* The Euro 2020 showpiece will now take place next year between June 11 - July 11
* The Euros have been postponed by a year due to the coronavirus pandemic
* UEFA held a series of conference calls on Tuesday to rip up the football calendar
* All 55 European national associations were involved in making the decision
* UEFA have placed more importance on finishing postponed domestic fixtures

UEFA have officially decided to postpone the 2020 European Championship until the summer of 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic decimating the football calendar.

It has been decided that the showpiece Euros will now take place between June 11 to July 11 next year.

During Tuesday's UEFA meeting involving president Aleksander Ceferin, which included a series of video conferences, it was decided to cancel this summer's showpiece football event - but the fate of this season's Champions League and the Europa League are still to be worked out.

UEFA have now decided to postpone Euro 2020 until the summer of 2021 due to coronavirus. UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin held a series of conference calls throughout Tuesday

Quote:
THE FUTURE OF EUROPEAN FOOTBALL THIS SEASON

UEFA confirm Champions League is on hold INDEFINITELY until further notice amid reports final had been delayed until June 27 due to coronavirus crisis

UEFA confirm Europa League is on hold INDEFINITELY until further notice amid reports final had been delayed until June 24 due to coronavirus crisis

FIFA Club World Cup's future in doubt with tournament to clash with Euros and the Copa America after both were pushed back until the summer of 2021
In a statement released on Tuesday afternoon, UEFA stated that the Euro 2020 postponement was because they are giving priority to 'completing domestic competitions' before admitting all club and national fixtures for both men and women 'have been put on hold until further notice'.

UEFA also admitted that they did not want to put additional strain on emergency services, which will be under huge stress treating those infected by the virus. Ambulances, medics and police are required to attend all football matches to protect players and supporters in case of emergency.

The statement read: 'UEFA today announced the postponement of its flagship national team competition, UEFA Euro 2020, due to be played in June and July this year. The health of all those involved in the game is the priority, as well as to avoid placing any unnecessary pressure on national public services involved in staging matches. The move will help all domestic competitions, currently on hold due to the COVID-19 emergency, to be completed.

'All UEFA competitions and matches (including friendlies) for clubs and national teams for both men and women have been put on hold until further notice. The UEFA Euro 2020 play-off matches and international friendlies, scheduled for the end of March, will now be played in the international window at the start of June, subject to a review of the situation.

'A working group has been set up with the participation of leagues and club representatives to examine calendar solutions that would allow for the completion of the current season and any other consequence of the decisions made today.

'The decisions, taken by UEFA's executive committee, followed video conference meetings held today with the presidents and general secretaries of the 55 national associations, as well as representatives for the European Club Association, European Leagues and FIFPro Europe, convened by UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin, to find a coherent plan to break the logjam of fixtures building up due to the spread of the virus across the continent.'

A pan-European tournament, with 12 host cities - including London, which was due to host the semi-finals and final - was ambitious at the outset and in the current climate had appeared almost impossible to achieve, especially with the European and domestic seasons up in the air.

It had earlier been reported that the Champions League final would be played in Istanbul on June 27 while the Europa League final in Gdansk had also been moved back a month to June 24, but UEFA insist no decision has been made yet.

Speaking following the crisis talks on Tuesday, Manchester United - who are on the brink of the Europa League quarter-finals and are hopeful of securing Champions League football - insist they will play an 'active role' in any further discussions.

United's statement read: 'We note the decision to postpone UEFA Euro 2020 to hopefully allow domestic and European competitions to come to a conclusion as a priority.

'Clearly coronavirus has created an unprecedented set of circumstances and the health and well-being of fans, players and staff has to come first. We will continue to play an active role in discussions through UEFA, the ECA and the Premier League and we will monitor developments closely.’

The hope is that, by postponing the Euros, there should now be breathing space for club tournaments to take place and finish in the summer, before the next season begins again around its usual August start-date.

According to reports, UEFA want the European football season to be finished by the end of June in the hope that the Champions League and Europa League can both be concluded this summer.

The Telegraph report that UEFA want this season's Champions League and Europa League campaigns to be concluded and the continent's domestic leagues all to resume at the same time.

Premier League clubs are expected to discuss UEFA's plans in their own meeting on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the postponement of the Euros may lead to potential issues arising with some of the smaller countries' federations, who are due a projected £14million from the tournament, a sum which is vital to their existence.

An agreement may be reached which sees them given temporary funding until the tournament takes place next summer. The cost of postponement was also set to be discussed.

Furthermore, UEFA will reportedly demand £275m from its member clubs and leagues to postpone the tournament by a year.

The governing body believes that amount would be required to push back the tournament by 12 months.

UEFA wants to scrap 12-nation Euro 2020 plans and host tournament in just ONE country because of Covid-19 fears, claims Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, with final decision set to be made in March

* Karl-Heinz Rummenigge says UEFA is considering scrapping 12-nations Euros
* Instead, this summer's tournament would be hosted by only one nation
* UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin fears the impact of COVID-19 on the plans
* Semi-finals and final are set to be played at Wembley Stadium in London
* UEFA will make a final decision on where the tournament will be played in March

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has claimed UEFA wants to hold this summer's European Championship in just one country.

Euro 2020, delayed 12 months until the summer of 2021 because of the Covid-19 pandemic, is set to be staged across 12 host cities in 12 different countries.

But Germany legend and Bayern Munich chief Rummenigge said UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin favours scrapping that plan for a single host.

Euro 2020 could be moved to just one country rather than the planned 12 amid Covid concern. Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has claimed UEFA is planning to downscale this summer's Euros. UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin is concerned about coronavirus and tournament plans

Rummenigge told Munich-based newspapers Munchener Merkur/TZ: 'We must not forget that the idea of this special hosting of the tournament came about when the coronavirus did not yet exist.

'At that time it was an initiative of the EU Commission that wanted to have football shown all over Europe.

'But I know that the UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin - who is incredibly careful with corona - is thinking about whether it wouldn't make more sense in these times to play the tournament in just one country.

'That would be with a corresponding hygiene concept, of course.'

Wembley is set to host the semi-finals and final but the UK is currently in a third lockdown. Euro 2020 was delayed by 12 months and is set to run from June 11 until July 11 this year

Reports last week suggested that UEFA has no intention of cancelling the tournament because of the financial damage it would inflict.

But staging the competition, due to run between June 11 and July 11, in just one country is among a range of alternative options being considered.

UEFA will make a final decision in mid-March and have also accepted that holding games in front of capacity crowds everywhere isn't likely to be feasible.

All 12 host cities have expressed their desire to proceed as planned and UEFA is aware that cutting some of them out of the plans could cost them millions in legal suits.

The Swiss FA president Dominique Blanc suggested last week that the tournament could be held entirely in Russia, Germany or London.

Wembley Stadium is set to host the semi-finals and the final of the competition.

Hampden Park in Glasgow, Scotland is also set to host matches in this summer's Euro 2020

The other host cities are Glasgow, Dublin, Bilbao, Rome, Munich, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Budapest, Bucharest, Baku and Saint Petersburg.

Rummenigge added: 'In the next few weeks, UEFA will and must make a decision on how and where the tournament should take place.

'That will not be easy. But the way I got to know Aleksander Ceferin, UEFA will make the right decision with great care and wisdom.'

UEFA has told ticket holders they will be entitled to full refunds if matches are moved to venues more than 35 miles [50km] away from the intended stadium.

Uefa said: 'If a match needs to be moved to another venue, UEFA will firstly decide if the tickets for the rescheduled match remain valid.

'When making this decision, UEFA would take into account various factors, such as whether the new venue is within a reasonable travelling distance from the original venue.

'In the event that a match is moved to a venue which is more than 50km away from the original venue, ticket buyers would be entitled to a full refund of the ticket price if they cannot, or do not wish to, attend.'
