UNDER-18S : LIVERPOOL 1 UNITED 3

Manchester United Under-18s deservedly earned a first competitive win under coach Neil Ryan in an incident-packed game against Liverpool at Kirkby.

Overall there was little to choose between the sides and the game constantly swung from one end to the other. Both teams had spells of dominance and, for much of the time, it was impossible to predict the eventual outcome. A terrific match, which saw four goals and two players sent off, ended with United sealing victory in the fifth minute of added time.

There was a decent turnout of spectators on an overcast and breezy morning on Merseyside and the anticipation of the game between these two great rivals was the same as ever. Liverpool were kitted out in their famous all-red strip, while United were in blue shirts and blue shorts.

Ryan’s lads went into the match hoping to register a first win of the season after drawing 3-3 against Derby County eight days earlier in the season opener at the Aon Training Complex.

United were responsible for the first meaningful attack of the game when, in the fifth minute, Arnau Puigmal found Largie Ramazani in the area, but the Belgian youngster couldn’t find a way past Vitezslav Jaros in the Liverpool goal.

Soon after, the focus shifted to the other end where the home side went close when Rhys Williams headed over from Jake Cain’s free-kick. Moments later, Liverpool were inches away from taking the lead when American youngster Matteo Ritaccio hit a sizzling long-range shot that thumped against the post.

United then enjoyed a good spell of pressure with Ramazani, Elanga and Greenwood giving the Liverpool defence a few nervy moments. It had certainly developed into a typically feisty Liverpool-United clash with both teams putting the emphasis on the search for goals. As the half-hour mark was reached, it was Liverpool who were doing the majority of the attacking, with both Abdi Sharif and skipper Paul Glatzel going close.

United hit the ground running after the interval and, within two minutes of the restart, took the lead thanks to Di'Shon Bernard’s towering header from Puigmal’s corner. It was a great start to the second half and more was to follow.

In the 59th minute, a fabulous four-man move saw United double the lead. James Garner got the ball rolling with a terrific pass to Brandon Williams, who instantly released the ball to Aliou Traore. Greenwood was perfectly placed in the area and, when the ball reached him, the striker was charged with the simple task of slotting the ball home.

With less than 20 minutes remaining, Liverpool got a foothold in the match when Glatzel scored with a fierce close-range shot. Less than two minutes later, Liverpool suffered a blow to their ambitions when Sharif was sent off after being shown a second yellow card.

This left the match finely balanced and there was even more drama to come when, with minutes to go, United defender Williams was red carded following a lunging challenge on Neco Williams. And with virtually the final kick of the game, United wrapped up the points when Garner scored his side’s third goal from the penalty spot after he was tripped in the area.

United team : Fojticek; Puigmal, Bernard, Laird, B.Williams; Elanga (McCann 84), Garner, Traore, Ramazani (McGhee 65); Levitt, Greenwood. Substitutes not used: Carney, Hockenhall, Denham.

Default Re: Man United U-18 Matches 2018/19

Manchester United leapfrogged neighbours City to reach the summit of the Premier League Under-18 North following this impressive victory over Stoke City at The Cliff on Friday evening.

The Blues from across Manchester had only claimed the top spot a few hours earlier following a convincing 6-0 win against Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Etihad Campus.

The Reds wasted no time getting into our stride with one of the earliest attacks ending with the ball nestling in the Potters’ net. A swift move upfield culminated in Mason Greenwood providing the final pass for Charlie McCann to hit an angled drive past Nathan Broome for his first Under-18s goal.

It was the perfect start and with a little more accuracy from Greenwood the Reds could have doubled or trebled their advantage. In the 11th minute, the striker fired wide from the penalty spot after Stoke’s Reece Jones brought down Ethan Laird.

And then, shortly afterwards, Greenwood failed to hit the target from a position that is normally lethal territory for last term's leading scorer. United eventually increased the lead, in the 32nd minute, with a bizarre goal that saw an attempted clearance by the Stoke skipper Will Forester appear to ricochet off team-mate Max Murphy or Reds winger Anthony Elanga and into the net. Although replays may clear it up, Elanga was initially credited with the goal.

Our Under-18s were good value for their lead, but Stoke were by no means being steamrollered and, on more than one occasion, United’s defence were forced into serious preventative action.

The second half was now being played under the illumination of The Cliff’s eight-pylon floodlighting system, and they nearly threw the spotlight on Aliou Traore, who went inches from scoring United’s third goal. Stoke were soon celebrating, though, after Jones superbly set-up James Jennings to halve United’s lead with a calm finish past Alex Fojticek.

However, their joy was short-lived as, seven minutes later, McCann hammered his second goal of the evening with a rising drive over Broome, punishing a loose clearance by the keeper.

Greenwood, who had not enjoyed good fortune in front of goal, finally got his name of the scoresheet with eight minutes remaining, by getting on the end of Traore's fine ball into the area. Substitute Mark Helm, who had replaced Dylan Levitt in the 84th minute, put the icing on the cake when he grabbed United’s fifth goal in added time, capitalising on a driving run into the danger zone by full-back Arnau Puigmal.

While there will still be some debate over whether Elanga ulitmately gets the second goal, this was another excellent display by Neil Ryan's side.

United: Fojticek; Puigmal, Mengi (Devine 62), Bernard, Laird; McGhee, Levitt (Helm 84), Traore; Elanga, Greenwood, McCann (Stanley 78).

Subs not used: Thompson, Hockenhull.

Scorers: McCann 4, 61, Elanga 32, Greenwood 82, Helm 90+5. Stoke City scorer: Jennings 54.

NEXT UP

September starts with a game on the first day of the month at Middlesbrough, with a Saturday lunch-time kick-off at 12:30 BST.

UNDER-18S REPORT: MIDDLESBROUGH 3 UNITED 1

Under-18 Premier League North | Rockliffe Park | Scorers: Wearne 24, McGill 44, 47; Puigmal 40.

Manchester United Under-18s' unbeaten start to the season came to an end at Middlesbrough as goals conceded either side of half-time proved to be their undoing at Rockliffe Park.

Up to that point, the young Reds were on a par with Boro, but that rapid double blast proved too big a mountain to climb for Neil Ryan’s lads. It was bright and breezy in this little picturesque corner of the North East and quite a few spectators turned out to take advantage of the pleasant conditions and watch their favourite team.

United, wearing the changed strip of all-blue, looked fresh and lively at the start of the game, despite the two-and-a-half hour coach journey to Teesside. Defender Ethan Laird was the first to put the Boro goal under pressure after moving upfield to join the attack.

The visitors were certainly having the bigger share of possession and looking the more likely to get on the scoresheet until the 25th minute, when Boro eased into the lead with a goal from winger Stephen Wearne. And it could have been worse a couple of minutes later when only a fine save from Alex Fojtiček prevented Layton Watts from doubling Boro’s advantage. Scoring always provides a boost to confidence, so it was no surprise that the home side started to have a bigger impact on proceedings.

Di’Shon Bernard and Laird both went close for United and then, five minutes before the break, the young Reds swept forward to claim the equaliser with a great strike from Arnau Puigmal.

However, the celebrations were soon to be cut short as, just moments before the break, Boro regained the lead through Gabby McGill after Kian Spence’s shot had struck the post.

United’s problems were increased two minutes into the second half when Boro moved further ahead, with striker McGill grabbing his second goal of the game.

It was the second time in four matches that United had conceded three goals, but on the other occasion, against Derby County at the Aon Training Complex, they also scored three. But, as time wore on, it became increasingly unlikely that the performance against the Rams was about to be repeated.

Mason Greenwood displayed a terrific burst of speed to get himself into a scoring position, but the striker's well-struck shot failed to find a route past goalkeeper Sol Brynn, who made some fine saves throughout.

After Harvey Neville - son of former United player Phil - came on as a late substitute for his Under-18s debut for United, Boro ended the game with 10 men after Wearne was red-carded, following a lunging challenge on Puigmal, but the hosts managed to see out the victory.

United: Fojtiček; Laird, Mengi, Bernard, Devine (Hockenhull 75); Levitt, Puigmal (Neville 89); Elanga, McGhee (Stanley 83), McCann; Greenwood. Subs not used: Thompson, Denham.

UNDER-18S: MANCHESTER UNITED 4 BLACKBURN 3

Under-18 Premier League North | Aon Training Complex | Scorers: Greenwood 4, 21, 88, Elanga 62; Vale 45+1, 57, Burns 81

A fantastic hat-trick from Mason Greenwood helped Manchester United's Under-18s return to winning ways in a seven-goal thriller against Blackburn Rovers at the Aon Training Centre on Saturday.

Neil Ryan's team were forced to battle all the way for this success against an industrious and talented Rovers side.

The game could have gone either way, but United always looked the more likely to snatch the victory with Greenwood in such outstanding form.

From the early moments of the match, the young Reds looked in a determined mood to erase the memory of their last outing, when beaten 3-1 against Middlesbrough on Teesside.

An early goal is always handy and, after four minutes, United struck the first blow when Greenwood latched on to a pass from Anthony Elanga before neatly slotting the ball past Rovers keeper Ben Winterbottom.

United, at any level, very rarely get an easy passage against the Lancashire lads and it was obvious, as this match unfolded, that this would prove to be the case again.

It certainly wasn’t just United who were looking to score goals, but it was the Reds who chalked up the second of the game in the 21st minute, when Greenwood beat the visitors' keeper again with a delightful chipped effort after seizing upon a loose touch from George Wilson.

Less than a third of the contest had elapsed and United looked to be in good shape to return to winning ways, but on the stroke of half-time, Rovers threw a spanner in the works when Jack Vale scored at the second attempt, following a good save from Alex Fojticek, to halve United’s advantage.

And, 10 minutes after the restart, Vale was on the mark again to level the scores, pulling away at the far post to volley home from Luke Brennan’s corner.

United had moved from a commanding position to being pegged back in barely 10 minutes, but there was plenty more to come from this riveting contest.

Eight minutes after Rovers had ‘balanced the books’, United were back in front thanks to a close-range finish from Elanga, for his first Under-18s goal.

This goal could have taken the wind out of Rovers’ sails, but it didn't seem to and, nine minutes from the end, substitute Sam Burns unleashed a low shot which went through Fojticek to make it all square once again.

The teams looked to be heading towards a share of the spoils, but that was before Greenwood completed his hat-trick with a solo goal that had the fans jumping for joy on the touchline.

United: Fojticek; Laird, Bernard, Mengi, Williams (c); Levitt, Traore; Elanga (Mellor 65), McGhee (Galbraith 73), McCann (Puigmal 73); Greenwood. Subs not used: Thompson, Devine.

WHAT'S NEXT?

The Under-18s travel to the Midlands for their next assignment, when taking on West Bromwich Albion away from home on Saturday 22 September. Kick-off is scheduled for 11:30 BST.

Default Re: Man United U-18 Matches 2018/19

UNDER-18S: MANCHESTER UNITED 1 NEWCASTLE UNITED 0

United’s Under-18s maintained an encouraging start to the campaign with a narrow and hard-earned Premier League Cup win over Newcastle United at the Aon Training Complex.

Just Anthony Elanga’s goal midway through the second half separated the teams at the close of this keenly-fought contest in sun-kissed Carrington.

Neil Ryan made six changes to the side that won 4-3 at West Bromwich Albion seven days before, primarily to keep players fresh in readiness for Tuesday’s UEFA Youth League match against Valencia at Leigh Sports Village. Ethan Laird, Di’shon Bernard, Aliou Traore, Mason Greenwood and Charlie McCann were all missing from the team sheet, whilst Dylan Levitt was listed on the bench.

Both teams were in their normal kits, with Newcastle sporting their distinctive black-and-white striped shirts and both sides, unusually, wearing the same coloured shirts (black).
The first genuine scoring chance arrived in the 13th minute when Brandon Williams tried his luck but the ball fizzed past the upright. Moments later, D’Mani Mellor was presented an opportunity in front of goal, but the Newcastle defence reacted rapidly to eradicate the threat.

The visitors were also busy in the Reds' penalty area and were unlucky when one attack culminated with the ball striking the crossbar.

United replaced Harvey Neville with Oliver Denham at the break, but he lasted barely 20 minutes before injury caused him to be replaced by Dylan Levitt with Arnau Puigmal moving to full-back.

Elanga made the all-important breakthrough for the Reds in the 70th minute with a great solo effort, reminiscent of Mason Greenwood’s recent winner against Blackburn Rovers. The final execution was a deflected shot that looped over the goalkeeper to ultimately give the hosts the victory.
Shortly after the winner was scored, there was an almighty scramble in Newcastle's area that could easily have brought another goal, but the Magpies’ defence managed to clear their lines.

The very next minute brought a gilt-edged chance for the Reds to double the advantage when Puigmal was fouled by full-back George Rounstell.

Puigmal took the responsibility himself, but opposition goalkeeper Atto Huuthen dived in the correct direction to make the save and keep his side in the game. The Newcastle no.1 produced an excellent performance overall and it was only his heroics in the closing stages that prevented Ryan's Reds from adding to the scoreline.
MATCH DETAILS

United: Fojtíček; Neville (Denham 46 (Levitt 64)), Mengi, Bejger, Williams B.; Galbraith, Puigmal, McGhee (Helm 78); Elanga, Mellor, Stanley.

Substitutes not used: Thompson, Hockenhull.

Scorer: Elanga 70.

UNDER-18S MATCH REPORT: UNITED 3 NEWCASTLE 0

Manchester United's Under-18s returned to our free-scoring ways with a comfortable victory over Newcastle United at the Aon Training Complex on Saturday afternoon.

Three-nil to the good at the break, the Reds looked all set to add to the total after the interval, but an exceptional goalkeeping display from Magpies keeper Daniel Langley saved his side from what could have been a heavy defeat.

This was the second consecutive Saturday that Newcastle had travelled south to Manchester. Last weekend, the teams met in the Under-18 Premier League Cup, with United running out 1-0 winners thanks to Anthony Elanga’s goal, while this game saw the lads back in league action.

It was a cloudy and quite chilly morning but that didn’t prevent a good numbers of devotees from taking in the game before moving on to Old Trafford for the evening kick-off against the senior Magpies.

Last week we had to wait until 20 minutes from the end before the deadlock was broken, but eight days on and it was a completely different story. United took the game to the visitors and, in the 13th minute, Ethan Galbraith found the net to give the Reds a flying start.

The Magpies were certainly being put under pressure from the earliest moments of this match and it really came as no surprise when Aliou Traore added a second goal just after the half-hour mark.

The visitors’ goalkeeper, Langley, and the defence in front of him, was being kept busy and Newcastle’s plight was soon to get worse, for within two minutes, Galbraith had fired home his second of the game and United were looking comfortable with a three-goal cushion.

D’Mani Mellor and Dion McGhee replaced Mason Greenwood and Ethan Laird at half-time, following their UEFA Youth League exertions in midweek, but that did nothing to alter the flow of the game.

United continued to dominate possession and excursions into the Newcastle penalty area were just as regular as in the first half. The Reds could have easily doubled our output, but for Langley’s terrific goalkeeping that saw him some excellent saves.

Teden Mengi, Di’Shon Bernard and Charlie McCann were three United players who looked certain to add their names to the scoresheet and they would have done but for Langley’s heroics.

UNDER-18S: SUNDERLAND 0 UNITED 7

Manchester United's Under-18s impressively thumped Sunderland 7-0 at the Academy of Light on Saturday afternoon.

After an even start to the contest, Mason Greenwood broke the deadlock on 22 minutes before Aliou Traore doubled the Reds' lead on the stroke of half-time.

The second half was a procession as Neil Ryan's men fired in five goals. Traore grabbed his second on 55 minutes, before Charlie McCann really put the game out of sight by adding United's fourth goal on the hour mark.

Ethan Laird made it 5-0 and D'Mani Mellor got his name on the scoresheet before the impressive Greenwood doubled his tally and put the icing on the cake right at the death with a clinical, low drive into the corner.

The hosts' misery was compounded when substitute Tom Smith was sent off for a nasty looking challenge on Ethan Galbraith.

Greenwood could perhaps have sealed a hat-trick in stoppage time, but the youthful United side will still be delighted with such an emphatic result.

UNDER-18S: MANCHESTER UNITED 1 WOLVES 0

United’s Under-18s maintained a run of encouraging form and a place among the title-chasing group with a hard-fought win over Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Aon Training Complex on Saturday afternoon.

There wasn’t a great deal to separate the teams throughout the 90 minutes, except for the game’s only goal scored from the penalty spot by Dylan Levitt.

Neil Ryan’s lads were returning to action, following a fortnight’s break, looking to add to an impressive opening streak to the campaign that had seen them win six of the eight games played. The only major blip to date has been the 3-1 defeat on the road at Middlesbrough.

With the previous four outings all ending in victory, with a return of 18 goals scored and just four conceded, the young Reds could look back on a solid foundation ahead of this fixture at the Aon Training Complex.
Ryan’s squad was missing Mason Greenwood, the leading scorer with 11 goals, who had played for the Under-23s on the previous evening against Newcastle United at Leigh. The coach was forced into an early reshuffle of his ranks during the game too, after central defender Teden Mengi was injured inside the opening five minutes and Reece Devine came on as substitute.

Wolves were the first to try their luck in front of goal when winger Theo Corbeanu hit a shot that went close to hitting the target. At the other end of the field, United went close to breaking the deadlock with Charlie McCann and D’Mani Mellor combining well, but the visitors’ goalkeeper Jackson Smith was equal to the threat. Corbeanu, with a touch more luck, could have been celebrating a hat-trick for Wolves, but a further two attempts on United’s goal narrowly failed to find the net.

Then, in the 33rd minute, the Reds were awarded a penalty after referee David Croft spotted that Ethan Laird had been infringed in the area. It came as something of a shock when the spot-kick was awarded, but Levitt stepped up confidently to place his shot wide of keeper Smith.

There had been very little to choose between the teams during the first half, but at least United went in at the break holding a slender lead.
With an extremely strong, gusting wind blowing across the Aon Training Complex’s wide open spaces, it was most definitely a day for keeping the ball on the ground and both sides were making a sound job of doing just that.

Despite the testing conditions and shortage of genuine goalmouth action, both United and Wolves continued to provide an entertaining and well-contested match.
The Reds asked most of the questions in the final quarter of the game, but Wolves defended with resilience to keep their hosts at bay in open play and limit United to just that match-winning penalty from Levitt.

MATCH DETAILS

Thompson, Laird, Mengi (Devine 5), Bernard (Ramazani 81), Williams B.; Levitt, Traore, Galbraith; Puigmal (McGhee 76), Mellor, McCann.

Substitutes not used: Carney, Stanley.

UNDER-18S: NORWICH CITY 0 MANCHESTER UNITED 3

Manchester United's Under-18s made it two wins from two games in the Premier League Cup with a comfortable 3-0 win against Norwich City at the Colney Training Ground on Saturday.

After both teams observed a minute's silence before kick-off ahead of Remembrance Sunday, the game got under way and, within five minutes of referee Ollie Sanders’ first whistle, the Reds were in the lead.

It was little surprise that the early strike came from the trusted left boot of in-form striker Mason Greenwood. The goal followed a promising attack, orchestrated by Largie Ramazani, which had the Norwich defence scrambling back. When the ball arrived into the feet of Greenwood, he feinted right and then left before stroking his shot calmly past the keeper into the bottom corner.

The early breakthrough suggested it could be a symbolic opening of the floodgates for United, but the Canaries had other ideas and slowly grew in confidence as they eased their way into the contest. Indeed, only excellent goalkeeping from United’s James Thompson and wayward finishing from the home side saw United’s lead preserved.

Then, against the flow of the game, Greenwood broke forward from near the halfway line and, chased by four Norwich defenders, he managed to outsprint them all before seeing his shot come back off the foot of the post.

Just before the break, United had Thompson to thank again as the keeper made a courageous save to prevent Anis Mehmeti, Norwich’s outstanding player during their resurgence, from grabbing an equaliser by parrying the ball behind for a corner.

The home side improved as time wore on, but all their good work was undone seconds before the half-time whistle when Greenwood was allowed to race upfield before doubling his tally with an cool finish over the diving keeper Daniel Barden.

Following an extremely short half-time break, of nine minutes, the teams were back in action and United made a change as D’Mani Mellor replaced Aliou Traore, who had suffered a knock in the early stages of the game.

Norwich opened the second period with a spring in their step and, with more good fortune in front of goal, they could have reduced the arrears. Mehmeti went close with a shot and, shortly afterwards, Spencer Keller was inches away from finding the net when his close-range attempt struck the post before Thompson swooped to snuff out the danger.

Norwich suffered a major blow on the hour mark when keeper Barden was injured in a collision with Greenwood and, after treatment, he was forced to leave the field and was replaced by Anthonius Berkeley, who is listed in the Canaries’ Academy as a defender.

United continued to look dangerous and added the third goal in the 77th minute as Greenwood turned provider this time by feeding the ball into the path of Arnau Puigmal, who rifled in his second goal of the season.

Ramazani also had the ball in the net late on but the assistant referee's flag saw his celebrations cut short.

Nevertheless, the young Reds made it back-to-back wins in the Premier League Cup - after beating Newcastle United 1-0 at the Aon Training Complex back in September - with a job well done on a blustery morning in East Anglia.
