De Gea voted March's Player of the Month

David De Gea has been named Manchester United's Player of the Month for March.

The keeper won the poll, conducted on Twitter and ManUtd.com, by a landslide as he picked up 72 per cent of the votes to beat fellow nominees Anthony Martial, who finished second, and Chris Smalling.


It is the first time the Spaniard, who is the reigning Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year, has landed the monthly prize this season.


De Gea produced probably the stand-out individual performance over the period - his excellent display in the Europa League defeat to Liverpool at Anfield and, of course, kept a clean sheet in his last Reds outing during the Manchester derby victory.

UNITED SHARING AROUND MONTHLY PRIZE

David De Gea became the 10th different player in succession to win Manchester United's Player of the Month award when scooping March's trophy.

The Spain keeper, voted the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year in 2014 and 2015, came out on top for the first time this season following a fine spell that included a stunning display at Liverpool in the Europa League.

He is the eighth player to earn the prize this term while Ander Herrera and Ashley Young were the last two winners during the 2014/15 campaign.

RASHFORD WINS GOAL OF THE MONTH AWARD



Marcus Rashford has won Manchester United’s Goal of the Month award for March after his cool finish to see off cross-city rivals Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium

Rashford’s second accolade this season, after his February Player of the Month prize, comes after his goal topped a ManUtd.com poll with 61 per cent of the votes, beating off competition from five other nominated strikes.

The youngster showed great composure and level-headedness beyond his years to knock the ball behind City defender Martin Demichelis before calmly slotting past an outstretched Joe Hart to open the scoring in last month’s Barclays Premier League derby.

"He is a real striker. He can make goals and he is also an attacking point and runs the channels," said manager Louis van Gaal afterwards, while Michael Carrick described the goal as an "unbelievable finish".

While Rashford won by a landslide in the end, there were other valid contenders: Juan Mata’s late free-kick to win the game against Watford was the runner-up with 28 per cent of the votes, and Anthony Martial’s equaliser in the Emirates FA Cup against West Ham United came third with 5 per cent.

Adnan Januzaj’s goal for the Reds' Reserves against Oldham in the Manchester Senior Cup, James Weir’s effort for Warren Joyce’s side against Liverpool and Charlie Scott’s improvised flick against Brighton for the Under-18s were also nominated.

DAVID DE GEA (6 appearances, 3 clean sheets)
There are few superlatives left to describe the United no.1, whose outstanding displays against West Ham and Everton helped earn an Emirates FA Cup final place. One save at Upton Park to deny Michail Antonio was truly world-class and his diving stop to repel Romelu Lukaku's penalty at Wembley showed why every Reds fan should never give up hope in any situation in front of the big Spaniard's goal. He won March's award and is in the running again for the prize.

ANTHONY MARTIAL (5 (1) appearances, 2 goals)
Firmly established as a crowd favourite, the Frenchman scored winners in both games against Everton this month. The injury-time strike in the semi-final showcased his ice-cool temperament and he continues to give right-backs nightmares with his pace and trickery. Add into the mix his assists for Marouane Fellaini in both FA Cup games, against West Ham and the Toffees, and it is easy to see why he has been nominated for the second month in succession.

MARCUS RASHFORD (6 appearances, 2 goals)
The teenager held his place in the starting line-up throughout April, with Louis van Gaal admitting it is impossible to leave the striker out. A Goal of the Season contender against West Ham helped decide the FA Cup sixth-round replay and he followed it up with a calmly-taken winner against Aston Villa at Old Trafford. A nerveless display on the big stage at Wembley, including some confident tricks and flicks, proved his appetite for the grandest of occasions.

There are some spectacular, momentous and season-defining strikes among the eight we've shortlisted for Manchester United’s Goal of the Month award for April – vote now to have your say on which of them should win.

Both of Anthony Martial’s winners against Everton are up for the award – in the league (United’s 1,000th Premier League goal at Old Trafford) and, dramatically, the Emirates FA Cup semi-final.

The Frenchman’s fellow first-team forward Marcus Rashford also has two nominations: his superb curled effort in the FA Cup replay win over West Ham Unitedand, three days later, the first-time shot that relegated Aston Villa..

Marouane Fellaini’s opener in the Wembley clash with the Toffees is in contention, as is Matteo Darmian’s well-taken volley against Crystal Palace – his first goal for United.

And two fine finishes from the Under-21s’ title-clinching game against Tottenham Hotspur round off our list: Donald Love’s brilliant opener and Guillermo Varela’s stunning last-gasp winner.

DE GEA VOTED APRIL'S PLAYER OF THE MONTH

David De Gea has been named Manchester United’s Player of the Month for April, retaining the award he won in March.

The goalkeeper, who becomes the first Reds player to land the prize more than once this season, claimed 62 per cent of the votes in polls on ManUtd.com and Twitter to finish ahead of his fellow nominees Anthony Martial (24 per cent) and Marcus Rashford (14 per cent).

De Gea was in stunning form to help United reach the Emirates FA Cup final, producing a breathtaking stop from West Ham's Michail Antonio in the quarter-final replay and then keeping out Romelu Lukaku's penalty in the semi-final against Everton at Wembley.

He also kept clean sheets in the league wins against the Toffees (in which he brilliantly thwarted a late Phil Jagielka effort to maintain United’s slender advantage), Aston Villa and Crystal Palace.

ANTHONY MARTIAL (5 appearances, 3 goals)
Top scorer for the Reds in the final month of the campaign after bagging the opener in the 1-1 draw against soon-to-be-crowned Leicester City. His two-goal show at West Ham proved in vain but he again illustrated his omnipresent threat and he was unlucky not to find the net in the FA Cup final. A classic header bounced back off Crystal Palace keeper Wayne Hennessey's right-hand upright and he had a goalbound effort blocked by Joel Ward.

WAYNE ROONEY (5 appearances, 1 goal)
The skipper hit top gear to emerge as the key figure in United's FA Cup triumph, earning the Man-of-the-Match award for a tremendous display. He switched back to attack at Norwich due to Martial's absence and intelligently teed up Juan Mata's winner. However, much of his fine work came in a deeper midfield role. A neat finish against Bournemouth was followed with a remarkable pass for Ashley Young's third strike against the Cherries and, of course, it was his dynamic run that led to Mata equalising against Crystal Palace at Wembley.

ANTONIO VALENCIA (5 appearances, 0 goals)
The Ecuador international has nailed down the right-back slot and performed consistently well throughout the month. He supplied the cross that allowed Martial to net against Leicester and the pass that released Rooney for Mata's goal at Norwich. The defender, who narrowly pipped Mata to a place on the shortlist, also went close to notching his first goal of the campaign when Bournemouth keeper Adam Federici tipped over his cannonball shot and it was his driven centre in the build-up that led to Jesse Lingard's Wembley winner.
