Welbeck's MUPC memories

Danny Welbeck has recalled playing in the Manchester United Premier Cup ahead of this year's tournament in Shanghai.

The Reds' Under-15s are one of 20 teams taking part in the World Finals of the event with the opening ceremony and draw taking place this Saturday evening. The matches will be played at Shanghai Shenhua's training ground from 22 July with the final at the Shanghai National Stadium as a curtain-raiser for next Wednesday's big DHL tour game between the Reds and Didier Drogba's Shenhua.

Welbeck admits playing in the MUPC, which has been developed by Nike since 1993, was a magical moment in his young career.

“I remember being amazed at my MUPC experience in Hong Kong," said Welbeck. "Of course Fabio and Rafael (then playing for Brazilian side Fluminense) were outstanding but the level of ability from players in every team surprised me – and every match we played presented a different set of challenges.

"Although it was a steep learning curve, I think that facing top international competition at just 15 years of age gives you an understanding of just how much work it’s going to take – both individually and as a team – if you want to make it to the top level in football.

"My advice to the kids in Shanghai would be to listen to their coaches, learn as much as possible and enjoy their football. Whatever happens, they will have great memories of this special event."

Premier Cup gets underway

The Manchester United Premier Cup is underway in Shanghai with the Reds entering an Under-15 team in the competition.

The Nike-backed tournament includes 20 clubs at this World Finals stage with four groups of five battling it out for the prize of competing for the trophy as a curtain raiser to United's first team's clash with Shanghai Shenhua on Wednesday.

A message was relayed to all the youngsters by Sir Alex Ferguson, who stressed: "MUPC is a terrific competition, with great opportunities so enjoy each other’s company, respect the game, respect the referee and, above all, enjoy it!"

The draw pitted the United schoolboys in Group C along with Boca Juniors, Dinamo Zagreb, Shanghai FA and Ajax Cape Town.

The Reds lost 2-0 to Boca before playing out a goalless draw with Zagreb. A narrow 1-0 reverse to Shanghai followed, leaving the team in fifth spot in the table at the end of the first day.

Reds pick up first win

The Reds' Under-15s collected a first victory in the Manchester United Premier Cup as Gamba Osaka and U.Catolica reached the final of the competition.

Tommy Martin's side defeated Keilor Park 2-0 and face Hubei FA in their final fixture during the Nike-backed tournament on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Gamba and U.Catolica get the opportunity to play at the Shanghai Stadium ahead of United's clash with Shenhua with both games due to be screened live by MUTV.

The Japanese side saw off Santos 1-0 in the semi-finals with the Chilean outfit knocking out Inter Milan on penalties at the same stage. It is the first time that a club from Japan has ever gone so far in the competition and their shoot-out victory against CF Pachuca in the last eight ended the reign of the Mexicans.

Milk Cup juga hasilnya minor. Pada kompakan semua... moga cuma di tim junior aja yang error, tim utama nggak ketularan.

Chileans triumph in Shanghai

Universidad Catolica have won the Manchester United Premier Cup for the first time in their history.

The final of the Under-15 tournament was played at the Shanghai Stadium ahead of the senior match involving Sir Alex Ferguson's side and Shanghai Shenhua.

A third-minute opener from Daichi Hayashi gave Gamba Osaka the lead but two far-post headers in the second half turned things around for the Chileans. Bastian Molina and Benjamin Martinez did the damage to spark jubilant scenes on the pitch at the final whistle.

Meanwhile, United's final game ended in a narrow 1-0 defeat to Hubei FA but Tommy Martin's team will have learned plenty from the experience of the overseas competition.
