Pardew Praises Papiss



Alan Pardew has hailed Papiss Cisse's work-rate as the striker looks to end a five-game wait for a goal at Old Trafford on Boxing Day

On Boxing Day Papiss Cisse will return to Old Trafford, the Theatre of Dreams where got off the mark for the season, looking for another kick-start to a stuttering campaign in front of goal.

And he does so with the full backing of his manager Alan Pardew , who has praised the way the Senegalese striker has continued to work for the team despite only managing four goals in his first full season at St. James' Park after netting 13 goals in 14 appearances last term.

Cisse was visibly frustrated when he was substituted in the second half of Saturday's 1-0 win over Queens Park Rangers having enjoyed little reward for another energetic display alongside Demba Ba .

But having scored once against Manchester United already this season - in the Capital One Cup in September - the 27-year-old will look to repeat the trick on Wednesday in the Barclays Premier League.

And Pardew believes the goals will come if Cisse continues to display the same determination and effort for Newcastle as he has throughout his barren spell.

"I think Papiss is just a victim of our injury programme, if I'm honest," said the Magpies boss.

"Without (Hatem) Ben Arfa and (Yohan) Cabaye we've lacked a bit of flair and quality in the final third and of course if you've got that it creates moments for Papiss to finish.

"He hasn't had a lot moments in games but his work-rate, his commitment to the cause, cannot be faulted and we continue to work with him and hopefully he'll get the goals soon."

Sir Alex Ferguson believes Newcastle United's indifferent form this season is because the "surprise" factor has been removed as teams begin to work them out.

Last term Alan Pardew's side finished fifth to qualify for the Europa League, with the 51-year-old winning the LMA and Premier League manager of the year awards.

But this season Newcastle stand 14th after Saturday's much needed win over Queens Park Rangers as United host them at Old Trafford on Boxing Day, having lost five of their past seven league games.

Of Newcastle's impressive performance last term Ferguson said: "The new players they brought in caught us all by surprise. We didn't really know a lot about them. I knew about [Demba] Ba, of course, but I didn't know anything about [Yohan] Cabaye or [Papiss] Cissé, to be honest with you. They had fantastic seasons. Second time round, clubs are starting to analyse them a bit different, plus, more importantly, he's [Pardew] had some injuries.

"Cabaye's out till next year, [Cheik] Tiote is out to next year, he's had one or two important players injured and that does make a difference when you've not got a squad as strong as the likes of ourselves or [Manchester] City or Chelsea. I'm not entirely surprised [by their form], although I am surprised they are so low down the table."

Ferguson is happy that Nemanja Vidic, his captain, is now fit again after two serious knee injuries in the past year, as the manager looks to shore up a defence that has struggled to keep clean sheets this season.

"He's a penalty-box defender, there's no doubt about that. He's one of the best. We all talk about us losing goals and I would hope that would stop when he returns, or reduce a good bit," Ferguson said.
