Scunthorpe - Menurunkan sejumlah pemain pelapis, Manchester United sukses membekap Scunthorpe United di Piala Liga. Dua pemain senior, Rio Ferdinand dan Michael Owen, mendapat pujian.

MU melangkah ke babak keempat Piala Liga usai menundukkan Scunthorpe 5-2 di kandang tim Championship Division itu, Glanford Park, Kamis (23/9/2010) dinihari WIB.

Dalam pertandingan itu, Ferdinand dan Owen bermain selama 90 menit. Keduanya jarang bermain di tim utama, selain karena beberapa kali dibelit cedera, para pemain lain juga tampil lebih meyakinkan.

"Bukan cuma Rio yang membutuhkan pertandingan, ada beberapa pemain yang juga butuh bermain. Para pemain muda juga membutuhkannya," ujar asisten pelatih MU Mike Phelan usai pertandingan seperti dikutip SkySports.

Owen yang sangat jarang mendapat kesempatan tampil, kali ini menunjukkan kelasnya dengan mencetak dua gol MU. Inilah gol kesembilan Owen dalam 10 penampilannya di Piala Liga.

"Jadi saya pikir Rio dan Owen bermain sangat baik. Dia (Owen) menunjukkan kelasnya sebagai pemain papan atas. Saya pikir dia berkontribusi buat semuanya malam ini, dia menguasai lapangan dengan sangat apik," kata Phelan.

Kiper Tomas Kuszczak juga mendapat kredit dari Phelan berkat sejumlah penyelamatan yang ia buat menghadapi serbuah para pemain Scunthorpe.

"Dia bermain sangat baik. Dia memang sedikit disulitkan dengan laju bola, tapi dia mengatasi semua bola yang datang padanya," sanjung Phelan.

Phelan sendiri angkat bicara karena manajer MU Sir Alex Ferguson tidak hadir dalam pertandingan itu. Ferguson memilih mengintip laga Valencia yang akan jadi lawan berikut The Red Devils di Liga Champions.

"Dia harus menyaksikan Valencia. Setelah pertandingan yang berakhir seri melawan Rangers, penting bagi kami untuk bersiap dengan baik. Kami bisa melihat langsung Valencia yang mengawali musim dengan sangat baik," demikian Phelan.

Tomasz Kuszczak - The Pole made some solid early saves and had no chance with Josh Wright's scorching opener. Did ride his luck after spilling a shot from Jonathan Forte, but continued to make a spate of saves after the interval and enjoyed an impressive evening.

Wes Brown - Subjected to constant pressure early on as Scunthorpe made a bright start to the match, but stood tall and also played a major role in Chris Smalling's fine goal.

Chris Smalling - Another impressive display from the youngster. Solid throughout in defensive terms, but displayed an attacking edge to his game with a perfect pass for Gibson's leveller and a superb finish of his own.

Rio Ferdinand - Back after illness, the skipper gave a near-faultless display in defence, admirably coping with the searing pace of Scunthorpe's Forte.

Rafael - Out of position on the left flank, but the Brazilian nevertheless endeavoured to lend attacking support wherever possible and got stuck in defensively. He'll relish a much-needed outing though, and will get sharper.

Ji-sung Park - A solid outing from the Korean, who grew in stature as the game progressed. Bagged a clinical finish early in the second half, and also prompted United's fifth with a fine run and shot.

Darron Gibson - Known for his powerful shooting, the Irishman's delicate lobbed equaliser betrayed his growing refinement - as did a quietly understated display of ball-playing in the centre of midfield.

Anderson - Wonderful to witness the Brazilian back in action from the start, and he caught the eye with a typically energetic display. Plenty of ball-carrying, tackling and some sublime passing too. Great to see.

Chicharito - Stationed out on the right, the Mexican was only able to give fleeting glimpses of his attributes, and his evening was curtailed when he was replaced by Gabriel Obertan midway through the second period.

Michael Owen - A fairly quiet first period had the striker limited to dropping deep and spreading the play, but after the break he showed his enduring class with a pair of goals; the first of which was a superb surge and finish.

Kiko Macheda - Neat and tidy throughout, the Italian would ordinarily have buried his first-half headed chance, and he was unfortunately flagged offside in the second period and denied a deserved goal.

Substitutes

Gabriel Obertan - Another player who needed to clock up some playing time after injury, and the Frenchman looked lively on the right flank.

Bebe - Given quarter of an hour on his debut, the Portuguese youngster quickly demonstrated the pace, power and potential which hastened his signing. Promising.

Boss' absence explained



Assistant manager Mike Phelan has confirmed that Sir Alex Ferguson missed United's Carling Cup trip to Scunthorpe to scout Valencia, the Reds' next Champions League opponents.

Unai Emery's side have started the season in fine form, topping La Liga and romping to a 4-0 victory at Bursaspor in their opening Group C encounter, prompting a personal check from the United manager during Wednesday's domestic clash with Atletico Madrid.

"He had to make some priorities and he chose that he wouldn't come to this game; he would leave it to his other people to do," Phelan told Sky Sports.

"It's important, after drawing the Rangers game, that we prepare properly and we get a good view of Valencia, who've started their season very well."

Sir Alex's absence left Phelan in charge of the Reds' third round clash at Glanford Park, and he was delighted to see a host of action-starved players gel well against an impressive Scunthorpe side.

"There were a few players out there who needed the game; a few of the young players," he said. "Rio's done well, but I thought also Michael Owen did exceptionally well. He showed what a top, top player he is and he contributed to everything tonight - he covered the ground really well.

"We have a young player in Chris Smalling who did well, then there were Kiko Macheda and Chicharito, and we introduced Bebe as well. The keeper (Tomasz Kuszczak) did exceptionally well. He dealt with everything that came his way.

"I thought Scunthorpe played their part in a very, very good game. They created a few opportunities. Even when we got it to 5-1 they created probably six chances that they possibly could have done better with.

"Overall it's a great scoreline from our point of view because it's a new team out there that was put together over a couple of days. From Scunthorpe's point of view, they should take a lot of pride from the game."

Chicharito tadi pagi bener bener nggak keliatan perannya...tapi ya mau gimana,posisinya bukanlah posisi natural dia bermain...Owen tadi malam nunjukin kalo dia masih striker berbahaya jika sudah didepan gawang..one on one ma kiper...bebe..selama 15 menit bermain...hmmmm..dri segi postur menunjang banget...speed lumayanlah...cuman tinggal ketenangan ma decision aja sie...kapan harus pass..kapan haru dribble sndiri...

Mestinya si Chico tandem sama Owen and put Macheda di belakang mereka... Sepertinya kemaren duetnya Kiko - Owen, and Chico ditaro di posisi Ronaldo... More like Henry.. But, sayang... Itu mengurangi kapasitas dia sbgai striker lebih dr setengahnya...
