Scunthorpe United out to cause an upset in Manchester United clash

SCUNTHORPE United caretaker manager Ian Baraclough believes if Manchester United take their Carling Cup third round clash tomorrow lightly, they do so "at their peril."

He knows the Iron's tightly-packed Glanford Park ground will be an unfamiliar environment for one of the biggest clubs in English football.

And he is hoping that with a big crowd behind them, the Iron might just pull off a major shock.

"These aren't the sort of salubrious surroundings they are used to," said Baraclough.

"One or two of them might think coming here is a stroll in the park.

"If so, great, we have players to capitalise on that.

"They will take us lightly at their peril.

"We have had big teams here in the last year. Newcastle we turned over 2-1 and they are now in the same division as Manchester United.

"We have had other big teams here too who could not cope with our work-rate."

But all the indications are that the management at Old Trafford are taking Scunthorpe anything but lightly.

They have had scouts at every game since the third round draw was made – and on Saturday Sir Alex Ferguson's right hand man Micky Phelan was at the Liberty Stadium in Swansea to run the rule over the Iron personally.

"That was paying us a great complement," Baraclough went on.

"They know they have to do everything right to make sure there is not a shock tomorrow night.

"They know if they play to their ability then nine times out of 10 they will beat us. But they know too that if we perform to our capability – and take our chances – then we can upset them."

Baraclough has challenged his players to rise to that challenge.

"I know we will be the underdogs – and I quite like that tag," he confessed. "But there is absolutely no pressure on us.

"It is a great opportunity for my players to test themselves for where they are in their careers.

"They are in the shop window.

"They know if they come to Scunthorpe and do well they will get the chance to move on and further their careers – as players like Andy Keogh, Billy Sharp, Martin Paterson and Gary Hooper have done.

"This could be the one game live on Sky television to put them there."

And Baraclough insists he will send his team out to be positive.

"I will set my team up in attacking fashion," he said.

"It is no good us trying to sit back and hold on to 0-0.

"We have got to go and try and score."

Baraclough was at Old Trafford on Sunday to watch Manchester United's Premier League clash with Liverpool.

"There probably won't be too many of that team lining up against us," he confessed.

"But it gave me a chance to look at their set pieces and have a look at the shape they line up as a team.

"They can field any one of their squad of 30 players and it would not weaken them.

"They will bring a team of international stars either from the past or in the making."

THREE times in the previous seven seasons, Manchester United have been knocked out of the Carling Cup by teams from Championship level.

And centre-back David Mirfin believes that Scunthorpe United can add to that list when the two teams clash in the third round at Glanford Park tomorrow night.

"I can't see why we can't cause an upset," he declared.

"If you go into a game thinking you can't win then nine times out of 10 you will end up getting beat.

"We have a youngish squad, nothing really fazes us and we look forward to games like this.

"Obviously it is going to be a big challenge – but one that we are going to look forward to.

"There's always a chance, not a massive one maybe, but if you go into it thinking 'if we play like we can and they have an off day', then there is always a chance."

Mirfin admits that the excitement around town about the game has now seeped into the Iron dressing room as well.

"It's going to be a great night," he continued.

"There is going to be a buzz about the place because it is something that the players, the fans and the club have been looking forward to ever since the draw was made.

"With the game being on Sky as well, that gives the club some great publicity and hopefully we'll put a good show on.

"Manchester United have got a squad full of internationals, just like Manchester City last year, and the younger lads they have will be international class as well.

"So it should be a really great night."

Mirfin is relishing the prospect of going head-to-head with former England striker Michael Owen, who will lead the Old Trafford club's attack.

"It's definitely exciting because he has obviously been one of England's best strikers in the last 10 or 15 years," the Iron defender continued.

"I think he'll probably be frustrated that he is not playing much anymore but everyone knows what a good player he is so it will be a good test for me.

"He's been unfortunate with his injuries but there's nothing bad that you can really say about him really, he's been scoring goals for 10 years.

"Obviously he's in a period now where he is not playing as much as he probably would like to be.

"But it looks like he is now going to get his chance against us tomorrow night.

"(Javier) Hernandez as well, he did well at the World Cup for Mexico, so if he plays that will be another good test for us.

"I think players from the lower leagues respect these sort of players for what they have achieved but we have got to try and approach it as any other game.

"Obviously it's not going to be, but that's how we must see it."
