Manchester United's Europa League last 16 tie at LASK will be played behind closed doors because of coronavirus, after 900 fans forked out for tickets and flights to Austria

* Manchester United will play LASK behind closed doors in Austria on Thursday
* Austria's health minister has cancelled all outdoor events with 500+ participants
* Manchester United sold over 900 tickets to their fans before announcement
* Club have announced that full refunds will be given to all United fans with tickets

Manchester United's Europa League last-16 clash at LASK will be played behind closed doors on Thursday night after the Austrian government cracked down amid the coronavirus crisis.

United have sold around 900 tickets to their supporters travelling to Austria, and the club have announced that all those with tickets will be given full refunds.

The news comes after Austria's health minister Rudolf Anschober announced at a press conference on Tuesday morning that all outdoor events with over 500 participants and all indoor events with over 100 participants would be cancelled until the beginning of April.

LASK's Stadion der Stadt Linz (pictured) will be empty for the visit of Manchester United. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Manchester United are travelling to Austria for Europa League action

As with clubs in Italy, it is expected that Austrian league fixtures will be cancelled, while European matches - like LASK's game with Manchester United on Thursday - will be allowed to go ahead behind closed doors.

The news will come as a blow to nearly 1,000 Manchester United fans who have forked out for match tickets, travel and hotel in Austria, expecting to be able to watch their team in action on Thursday night.

United's players arrived for training at Carrington as normal on Tuesday morning, and are expected to fly out to Austria as planned on Wednesday.

The LASK-Manchester United clash is just the latest to be hit by the coronavirus outbreak after all matches in Italy were cancelled for a month.

In Spain, LaLiga are set to play the next round of fixtures behind closed doors, while a number of Champions League and Europa League matches will also have no fans present over the coming weeks.

'We are not happy with how the health office dealt with this': LASK president hits out at Austrian government after forcing their 'match of the century' against Manchester United behind closed doors due to coronavirus

* LASK's Europa League game against Man United will be played without fans
* Mounting coronavirus fears have been causing havoc in the world of sport
* The Austrian government will only let 500 people attend the Europa League tie
* LASK president Dr Siegmund Gruber claims the decision has cost them £875k

Manchester United's Europa League opponents LASK Linz are unhappy that their 'match of the century' in Austria on Thursday must be played behind closed doors due to the coronavirus alert, and estimate the decision will cost them £875,000.

The Austrian government has put a limit of 500 on the number of people attending the first leg of the last-16 tie at the Linzer Stadion, including staff and officials from both clubs, meaning none of the 900 United fans who bought tickets will be able to attend.

LASK president Dr Siegmund Gruber criticised the decision, claiming it does not fall into line with other European countries and has left his club scrambling to change their plans.

'They put the city of Linz under pressure by limiting it to 500 people, and that includes journalists, staff, ball boys,' he said. 'Why 500? I don't understand this either. In Germany it was 1,000. I was at Leipzig (v Tottenham) and they played in front of more than 40,000. So the whole communication and situation, I am not very happy with that.

'They passed these measures inside 24 hours which is not a lot of time. In Germany they played as normal. In other countries, like Italy, the situation is different.

'It's the first time for us to face such a situation and it's a pretty big challenge for our staff. In terms of tickets, we will try to refund all of them but it will take some time so stick with us.

'It's been a really busy week for us, and next week travel to Manchester. We understand it's a delicate situation. In terms of communication and handling of this, we are not so happy about how the health office has dealt with this.'

LASK will be forced to play against Manchester United behind closed doors on Thursday after measures by the Austrian government to tackle the coronavirus. The club are estimated to lose £875,000 as a result of the Austrian government's decision

Asked how much it has cost the Austrian club, Dr Gruber added: 'I don't know exactly but I guess around €1million in food, ticketing and sponsors who can't present themselves.

'It would have been a reward for the people and city to stage this match, and it's a pity it can't take place. I would have loved to see the atmosphere, and it would have been our last big match here – unless we beat United, of course.'

The LASK chief still expects next week's second leg in Manchester to go ahead as planned but admitted that is open to change too.

'I can't say anything about what it will be like in Manchester,' he added. 'At the moment there are no problems. At the moment, we travel there but things change day by day.'

LASK are playing in the knockout phase of European competition for the first time after losing a Champions League qualifier to Club Brugge – United's opponents last time out – in the summer and then topping a difficult Europa League group that included Bruno Fernandes' Sporting Lisbon, PSV Eindhoven and Rosenborg.

Their French coach Valerien Ismael, who faced United as a player during a brief spell at Crystal Palace in 1998, still believes Thursday's game will be a huge occasion for his players.

'It's the match of the century,' said Ismael. 'We will have to play without our family and friends but we are composed and focused. The positive thing is it that the game takes place. We focus on our opponent and we are highly motivated.

'It's a real highlight for us and a challenge to play against one of world's biggest teams. We are the underdog but we are looking forward to match.

'They are a great team. They have in every position two, three or four players of the same high quality. They are very strong but maybe what is to our advantage is that they underestimate us and the situation. They don't know us and this could help us.'

Manchester United pay £350 to ALL fans who were travelling to LASK Europa League clash after game was put behind closed doors due to coronavirus... and it will set the Red Devils back £245,000

* Manchester United have reimbursed all fans who were travelling to Austria
* Europa League clash with LASK was put behind closed doors due to coronavirus
* As a result, United will pay all 700 fans due to attend £350 for travel and hotels
* United have also refunded each supporter's ticket for Thursday night's game

Manchester United have reimbursed all 700 supporters who were planning to attend the club's Europa League clash with LASK after it was announced that the game will be played behind closed doors due to the coronavirus.

United will pay £350 to each fan to cover their travel and hotels as well as refunding their match ticket for Thursday night's game.

The Red Devils' good-will gesture will set the club back £245,000 with the deadly virus continuing to wreak havoc across the world.

Manchester United have paid £350 to all supporters who were travelling to LASK on Thursday

Fans were notified by text message which thanked them for their continued support on away days.

The text message read: 'We appreciate the lengths to which supporters go to follow the team wherever we are playing in Europe. We understand that, for many fans, the cost of travel and accommodation for the LASK game will have been non-refundable.

'Given this unique occasion, we have chosen to pay a fixed sum of £350 to all supporters who were due to attend tonight's game having purchased tickets through the club.

'This is in addition to the match ticket refund which has now been processed and should be credited to your account within 3 working day.

'The £350 will also be credited to your account within 5 working days and appear as a separate payment. Thanks.'

Manchester City's clash with Arsenal on Wednesday evening was the first Premier League to be called off due to the coronavirus, with many more top-flight games expected to follow suit.

United sent a text message to each fan to tell them that they had been reimbursed

The government response to the coronavirus outbreak is expected to shift to the 'delay' phase on Thursday - reportedly meaning that a crisis plan concerning football could shortly be unveiled.

All matches are expected to be played behind closed doors under new plans to combat the spread of the virus.

LaLiga became the next top division to suspend games after the Real Madrid squad were put into quarantine after one of the club's basketball players contracted the disease.

'They deserve a lot of credit for the way they went about the job': Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hails character of his Manchester United players after coasting through Europa League clash with LASK in front of no fans due to coronavirus pandemic

* Manchester United eased to a 5-0 win over Austrian side LASK on Thursday
* The game was played behind closed doors due to the coronavirus pandemic
* Solskjaer praised his players for the way they dealt with the strange backdrop
* He also heaped praise on Odion Ighalo after he scored a sublime goal

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was pleased by the professionalism and cutting edge displayed by his players as Manchester United romped to victory in front of empty stands at LASK.

The coronavirus pandemic saw Thursday's Europa League clash played behind closed doors, with just 500 people allowed into the first leg in Linz.

The surroundings could hardly have contrasted more with Sunday's victory against rivals Manchester City at a bouncing Old Trafford, but United did not let their standards drop in these strange surroundings.

Odion Ighalo's extraordinary first-half strike put Solskjaer's side on course for a superb 5-0 win, with Daniel James, Juan Mata, Mason Greenwood and Andreas Pereira scoring as LASK imploded.

'The boys were fantastic,' Solskjaer said. 'I think they deserve a lot of credit and praise for the way they went about the job.

'There was loads of quality in our finishing, some fantastic goals and some football we should be proud of.

'It was easy (to keep the team focused) because these players are very focused.

'They know what they want, so there was no doubt in my mind that we were going to do well.

'After the warm-up, Michael (Carrick) and Kieran (McKenna) came to me and said that the boys were really, really good in the warm-up. Focused.

'I have to praise them, they are very professional.'

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was pleased by the professionalism shown by Manchester United in Linz

Solskjaer said coaching in a near empty ground was 'strange' and hopes 'it doesn't happen too often', but the evolving coronavirus situation means, at the very least, more matches are set to be played behind closed doors.

It is unclear whether next Thursday's return fixture at Old Trafford will even be able to go ahead, with UEFA hosting a meeting of European football stakeholders about Covid-19 on Tuesday.

Put to him this accomplished win in Linz might ultimately count for nothing, Solskjaer said: 'Well, you know for us it counts because we know what we can do and we're still improving.

'It's not that what matters. For us it's to just see the improvement of the team, the players, the group together. That was vital enough for this game.

'If something is decided that we don't want in the tournament (we will see), but we'll just have to wait for the outcome of the meetings.'

There is no doubt United will progress to the quarter-finals if and when the tournament continues after a win kickstarted by Ighalo's moment of magic.

It was the fourth goal in three starts since his surprise January loan switch from Shanghai Shenhua, leading to talk of a permanent summer move.

'Odion has done really well when he's come in and he's enjoying himself,' Solskjaer said.

'He will improve and get better, but he has qualities that we saw in him that we needed and we'll still need those qualities for next season so let's see what we do.

Odion Ighalo scored a sublime goal and Solskjaer was full of praise for his new striker

'He's a goalscorer and he's a striker. He doesn't worry too much about all that nonsense build-up play - that's a joke obviously - but he knows his job and what his role in the team is.

'He is very good back to goal, you can play up to him. Great link player, but maybe the best thing about him is his personality, so he's got the whole lot really.

'He had three touches before his fourth, the finish. All them touches were high quality but he had to make them to create the space for himself.

'But the strike is on the half-volley, great timing. No-one would have saved that one so anyone would be proud of that finish.'

Meanwhile, LASK counterpart Valerien Ismael was left frustrated.

'We saw Manchester United's quality tonight,' he said.

'I think the margin of victory was too big, but it's a learning process for us. The Europa League journey is over for us.'
