PREMIER LEAGUE 2 PREVIEW : UNITED V CHELSEA

Manchester United will be determined to bounce back from Monday's disappointing defeat at Southampton when tackling much-vaunted Chelsea in the latest Premier League 2 fixture on Sunday.

The game is live on MUTV and there is free entry for all fans at Leigh Sports Village as the Reds strive to add to the three points collected in the opening win over Leicester City at the same venue.

United defeated the Blues 1-0 at Stamford Bridge in the teams' last Under-21 meeting, thanks to a Matty Willock goal, but this represents a maiden clash at the new Under-23 level. With a number of their FA Youth Cup and UEFA Youth League-winning side available, the visitors will provide stiff opposition.

Nonetheless, Warren Joyce will hope his strong words in the wake of the St Mary's setback can have the desired impact on his troops. Ro-Shaun Williams is back in training but there remains a lack of attacking players in the squad, with James Weir and Josh Harrop tried in the centre-forward position on the South Coast.

Joel Castro Pereira is back from his stay at the Olympics with Portugal to join the competition for the goalkeeper's position, with Sam Johnstone missing the 2-0 defeat to Southampton due to a minor knock.

PREMIER LEAGUE 2 : MAN CITY 1 UNITED 1

Manchester United and neighbours City warmed up for the senior action with a 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium at Premier League 2 level.

The Reds' Reserves went ahead in the first half through Matty Willock, soon after a tactical reshuffle by coach Warren Joyce, but the Blues levelled through substitute Brahim Diaz to ensure the spoils were shared.

Rodney Kongolo really should have put the hosts ahead when latching onto a miskick by Regan Poole and advancing towards Kieran O'Hara's goal in only the seventh minute. However, the Dutchman lifted his finish over O'Hara but also clear of the bar.

Lukas Nmecha was a box of tricks and he turned Axel Tuanzebe, only for the Reds skipper to deflect the striker's shot wide. Marcus Wood tested O'Hara's reflexes with a cross-shot but the keeper was not overly involved for all of City's superior possession.

Paolo Fernandes lashed a fierce drive off target before going off injured, after being hurt in an early collision with Willock, and United's first real attack to carry any genuine threat supplied the key moment of the half. Josh Harrop's pass fed Willock and, having just been moved further forward in a tactical switch that led to Scott McTominay vacating his centre-forward's role, the 20-year-old did the rest. A great solo run, including a clever dummy, set up a left-footed finish wide of Billy O'Brien.

United defended the lead manfully, while Javairo Dilrosun and Diaz produced efforts that flew well wide, and a counter-attack launched by Tuanzebe led to Demi Mitchell forcing a diving stop out of O'Brien, his first real save of the night. Only four minutes later, the Blues struck as Demaco Duhaney robbed Mitchell and ultimately claimed the assist as fellow substitute Diaz collected his pass and belted home a stunning finish.

Academy players Ethan Hamilton and DJ Buffonge entered the fray as United managed to spring forward sporadically in search of a winner. A magical build-up, starring Willock, left Harrop with a fantastic opportunity but the midfielder could not get his shot away and the chance was lost. Moments later, Dilrosun had a thumping drive pushed out by O'Hara at the other end.

In the closing stages, Diaz blazed over and Hamilton was flagged offside when he tried to latch onto a Buffonge through ball before a crucial save by O'Hara with his legs thwarted Diaz deep into stoppage time as there was no late addition to the scoreline with all the focus now switching to events between the clubs at Old Trafford on Saturday.

United : O'Hara; El Fitouri, Tuanzebe, Poole, Riley; Redmond, Willock; Scott (Buffonge 70), Harrop, Mitchell (Hamilton 65); McTominay (Dunne 94). Subs not used: Moutha-Sebtaoui, Doughty.

RESERVES : UNITED 1 VILLARREAL 0

Premier League International Cup | Leigh Sports Village | Scorer: Harrop 34

Manchester United started life in the Premier League International Cup with an excellent 1-0 victory over a strong Villarreal side, thanks to Josh Harrop's first-half strike.

The game was in some doubt due to power problems caused by the huge electrical storm that engulfed the Manchester area and forced City's Champions League tie with Borussia Monchengladbach to be postponed. Following an hour's delay, play did get under way and all credit to everybody at Leigh Sports Village for handling the adverse weather conditions.

It initially appeared as though the late start would affect the hosts as holders Villarreal almost scored twice in the opening minutes. Portuguese right-back Edgar Ie shot just wide after a raid down the flank and Jose Carlos Lazo was too unselfish in prodding the ball wastefully behind the goal when a goal seemed certain.

However, the Reds grew in stature and began to handle a new style of football for many of the youngsters. Harrop pulled a low shot off target when he had other options and the United no.10 was then booked for simulation after going to ground under Manuel Morlanes' challenge inside the box.

With Regan Poole and Axel Tuanzebe making some splendid last-ditch tackles, Warren Joyce's charges had the perfect platform to start threatening Joan Femenias' goal. Sadiq El Fitouri volleyed over the bar when the offside flag was up anyway against Scott McTominay before the opener arrived. On his first Reserves start, Ethan Hamilton won the ball tigerishly on Ramiro Guerro in the centre-circle and advanced to release a perfectly-timed pass into the path of Harrop, who slammed a left-foot finish inside Femenias' near post.

Felipe Alfonso and Daniel Raba, from a free-kick, worked Sam Johnstone and, when the keeper was not on hand, El Fitouri made an important clearance in first-half stoppage time. Matthew Olosunde replaced Devonte Redmond at the break while Villarreal's first two subs were aged 27 and 30, emphasising their superior experience.

United continued to keep the Spanish team at bay as the second half unfolded as both sides failed to create any real chances. Poole and Tuanzebe remained resolute at the heart of the defence and, for all the quality and nous in the Yellow Submarine ranks, Johnstone was barely extended.

Raba flickered into life when launching a long-range attempt that dropped dangerously over the bar before his pass fed Mario Gonzalez in the 76th minute and the striker's drive flew past Johnstone's outstretched left hand but bounced off the inside of a post to safety.

Femenias made a hash of a punch that led to McTominay almost bravely forcing the ball into the net but Juan Fernandez cleared over his own goal, spilling blood in the process. The tireless Joe Riley then pounded down the left to reach a Hamilton pass and crashed a shot wide as the Reds finished strongly. Nonetheless, the final effort of the game came from the bandaged head of Fernandez, who sent his header off target with time virtually up.

Middlesbrough and Sparta Prague are also in Group B but Joyce's youngsters can be proud of their wonderful start to the inter-continental competition.

United: Johnstone; El Fitouri, Tuanzebe, Poole, Riley; McTominay, Redmond (Olosunde 46); Scott, Harrop (Kehinde 81), Hamilton (Mitchell 96); Willock. Subs not used: Henderson, O'Connor, Doughty.

PREMIER LEAGUE 2 PREVIEW: UNITED V DERBY

Manchester United's Reserves will enjoy a first appearance of the season at Old Trafford when Derby County provide the opposition in the latest Premier League 2 fixture on Monday night (kick-off 19:00 BST).

There is free entry for all spectators through the turnstiles on the night and the action is live on MUTV as Warren Joyce's side look to build on the impressive 1-0 win over Villarreal in the Premier League International Cup.

Despite lacking a natural striker, the youngsters have coped admirably and Josh Harrop's strike secured a superb success over an experienced Spanish team. Matty Willock has fulfilled an attacking role of late and it was his solo effort that earned a point in the last league outing at Manchester City's Etihad Stadium.

Ethan Hamilton made his first Reserves start against Villarreal and his fine performance suggests he could keep his place, while Scott McTominay was another key performer in midfield despite being able to do a job up front.

United, Under-21 champions last season, are in ninth place in the 12-team table but that does not tell the whole story as Chelsea and City have represented difficult challenges in the last two matches.

Derby are yet to pick up a point this season but ran both City (2-3) and Tottenham (1-2) close and will be relishing the opportunity to play at the Theatre of Dreams.

RESERVES : MANCHESTER UNITED 3 DERBY 2

Premier League 2 | Old Trafford| Scorers: McTominay 17,85 Harrop 67 (pen) | Vernam 35,74

Manchester United's Reserves defeated Derby County 3-2 at Old Trafford in an entertaining Premier League 2 encounter. Charles Vernam twice equalised for the visitors but Scott McTominay scored a brace, including an 85th-minute winner, while the excellent Josh Harrop converted a penalty.

The chance to play under the lights at Old Trafford was a real boost for the youngsters and they were on the offensive from the outset. Joe Riley cut inside to force a save out of Henrich Ravas and, 10 minutes later, the positive start was rewarded.

Harrop produced some cute play on the flank and followed it up with the most inviting of crosses for McTominay to thump home a header from inside the six-yard box. Vernam nodded a Kellan Gordon centre over the top but most of the action continued to come at the other end. Riley again tried his luck with his right foot with no joy and Ravas dealt just as comfortably with a Harrop shot, even though it took a deflection.

The left flank was the most dangerous one for United as Riley supplied another dangerous ball that led to McTominay sliding in, only to see his effort clip the outside of Ravas' right-hand post and go wide. Soon afterwards, Ethan Hamilton was the provider from a similar area but the willing McTominay could only fire too high from close range.

Derby got back on level terms on 35 minutes, against the run of play, when Emil Riis Jakobsen set up Vernam for a header that had crossed the line before being cleared by Devonte Redmond. It was Vernam's fifth goal of the season and undid the Reds' fine work.

Although the classy Harrop launched a dangerous attack in immediate response, the teams went in level at the break. Sadiq El Fitouri's low cross was well fielded by Ravas at the start of the second half but the opportunities began to dry up for the Reds.

The Rams had a good opportunity to edge in front when Vernam headed narrowly wide but Warren Joyce made a tactical reshuffle when introducing fit-again Ro-Shaun Williams and it gave the hosts a bit more impetus. A break inspired by another substitute, Matthew Olosunde, led to Harrop being clumsily tripped inside the area by Alex Cover and the referee pointed to the spot. Up stepped Harrop to drill home a perfect penalty to make it 2-1.

To their credit, Derby battled back with real purpose. Gordon should have scored when firing over the bar and Cover had a shot deflected wide before substitute Alefe Santos delivered a dangerous cross and Vernam flung himself horizontally to power a diving header past Kieran O'Hara for another equaliser.

United piled on the pressure in a desperate bid to deservedly get in front for a third time and were rewarded with five minutes remaining. A patient, yet potent, move again led to the ball going out to the left wing, where Riley's cross was met by Olosunde. The American managed to force it towards McTominay, who spun and crashed a low drive wide of Ravas.

O'Hara made late saves to thwart Jamie Hanson twice, the second effort from a free-kick, as the Reds held out for three welcome points on the back of two draws.

United: O'Hara; El Fitouri, Tuanzebe, Poole, Riley, Scott (Williams 64), Redmond (Olosunde 58), McTominay, Harrop, Willock.
Subs not used: Moutha-Sebtaoui, Chong, Doughty.

Manchester United U23s 1-1 Liverpool U23s: Josh Harrop penalty cancels out Harry Wilson flick as Mamadou Sakho and Danny Ings feature for Reds

* Manchester United held by rivals Liverpool in Premier League 2 fixture
* Danny Ings and Mamadou Sakho featured for the Reds' second-string side
* Josh Harrop's penalty for hosts cancelled out Harry Wilson's clever flick

Manchester United and Liverpool's Under 23s had to settle for a point each the day after the senior sides drew at Anfield on Monday.

The youngsters met at Leigh Sports Village in an entertaining Premier League 2 clash as Red Devils midfielder Josh Harrop scored from the penalty spot to cancel out Harry Wilson's audacious flick for the Merseysiders.

Liverpool - featuring first-teamers Mamadou Sakho, Danny Ings and Marko Grujic - went ahead in the first half as Pedro Chirivella's low shot was diverted into the back of the net by quick-thinking Wilson.

United's Josh Harrop, scored from the penalty spot to equalise

Quote:
MATCH FACTS

Manchester United: Johnstone, Williams, Tuanzebe, Poole, Riley, Redmond, Olosunde (Scott), McTominay, Harrop, El Fitouri, Willock

Scorer: Harrop (pen), 50

Subs not used: Maguire, Kelleher, Lennon

Scorer: Wilson, 18
The 19-year-old expertly allowed the ball to travel between his legs before diverting the ball in the opposite direction with a flick to put the Reds into the lead on 18 minutes.

However, United were level early in the second half through Harrop's spot-kick.

The referee awarded a penalty after Scott McTominay was brought down in the area by Chirivella following a mazy run.

Harrop, who turns 21 in December, kept his cool to hit the ball low past Liverpool stopper Kamil Grabara.

United went close to taking the lead as Devonte Redmond fizzed a shot from outside the area but saw his effort hit the bar with Grabara well beaten.

Liverpool piled on the pressure in the late stages of the game but were unable to find a breakthrough as the young rivals ended the game all square.

RESERVES: UNITED 1 ARSENAL 0

Premier League 2 | Leigh Sports Village | Scorers: Williams 7

Manchester United's Reserves picked up a welcome Premier League 2 win with Ro-Shaun Williams's early goal proving enough to defeat Arsenal at Leigh Sports Village.

The Gunners fielded a cosmopolitan team aged 19 or under and were soon behind. Josh Harrop's left-wing corner came off Sauvas Mourgos's head and Williams ducked to nod in at the far post to register his first goal at Reserves level.

Despite the excellent start, United saw little of the ball as the visitors controlled possession, without testing Sam Johnstone in the Reds' goal. Axel Tuanzebe may have handled inside the box when he made a slide tackle on Eddie Nketiah and Regan Poole was forced to make a fine challenge on the same player.

Ismail Bennacer hammered off target but chances were at a premium in the first half until Demi Mitchell, introduced to the line-up in place of Scott McTominay close to kick-off, threaded the ball through to Matthew Olosunde. It was a golden opportunity for the American but his shot was too close to Hugo Keto, who saved with his legs.

Soon afterwards, Sadiq El Fitouri cracked an effort well wide from the edge of the box while Olosunde made an important clearance as Arsenal pressed in the closing stages of the half with Bennacer also being refused optimistic claims for a penalty when taking a tumble.

United were much better after the break and asked plenty of questions of Keto in the visiting goal. Harrop and Joe Riley made driving runs from the left to force stops out of the Finn while Devonte Redmond's shot was too weak and easily held after being fed by Harrop.

More positive work by Riley should have yielded a second goal but Mitchell scuffed his shot, allowing Kostas Pileas to comfortably control and clear. Keto dived to keep out a low shot by Matty Willock and another decent attempt by Riley while Kris Da Grace was fortunate to get away with a handball inside the area from a corner.

Kaylen Hinds managed Arsenal's first shot on target in the 68th minute but Johnstone was quickly out to block with his legs as the north Londoners showed they were still in the game. However, the Gunners were indebted to Keto for keeping the Reds within touching distance as he made another reflex stop to thwart Harrop from a flick by the outstanding Riley.

Bennacer produced another wayward drive as injury time approached and the Reds managed to deservedly maintain the slender advantage to set things up nicely for Friday's afternoon encounter at Tottenham, which will be shown live on MUTV.

United: S.Johnstone; Williams, Tuanzebe, Poole, Riley; Redmond, El Fitouri; Olosunde, Willock (Scott 86), Harrop; Mitchell (Kehinde 67). Subs not used: O'Hara, Buffonge, Whelan.
