Can the El Clasico Doubleheader Help Manchester United Beat Real Madrid?



While it may only be seven days until Sir Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho go head to head in the Champions League, the buildup in Manchester will be very different from the preparations in Spain.

In Madrid, things are very different. While United rest up this week, Real must prepare to play Barcelona in Tuesday's Copa Del Rey second-leg semifinal. In the first leg, the two giants of Spanish football drew 1-1, so the second leg at the Nou Camp is key.



While the Copa Del Rey isn't as prestigious as La Liga or the Champions League, it's likely both teams will field full-strength sides, as they did in the first leg. With Barcelona as the clear favourites to win the Spanish League title, the Copa Del Rey will take on extra importance for Real Madrid. This may well be their only real opportunity to get one over on their old enemy this season.

On Saturday, the two clubs will meet again, this time in La Liga. However, this El Clasico might have an unfamiliar look.

While both sides will want to win for the sake of pride, the outcome of this match is unlikely to have any effect on the destination of the Spanish title. Marry that with the fact the both sides are in precarious positions in the Champions League, and both managers may elect to rest key players.

The clubs have already taken steps toward protecting their players for the Champions League. Instead of the normal late-Saturday evening kickoff, this Bernabeu Clasico will start at 4 p.m. local time, thus giving Madrid players an extra few hours rest before facing United.

Even though Saturday's clash is likely to be a decaffeinated Clasico, the hype and intensity that comes with facing Barcelona will still have an impact on Real Madrid.

And in a finely balanced game that is likely to be decided by the finest of margins, that might just give Manchester United a crucial advantage.
