FLETCHER: TITLE IS IN OUR HANDS

Darren Fletcher says United will approach Sunday's game against Chelsea as if it was any other fixture, despite the immensely high stakes.

Victory would all but secure a 19th league title, while defeat would see Chelsea leapfrog the Reds and move to the top of the table with only two games to play.

Chelsea are expected to come and attack - after all, anything but a win would leave Sir Alex's men in the driving seat - and Reds midfielder Fletcher says United will be similarly positive.

"We'll certainly play for three points," he told United Review. "We do that every time we step onto a football pitch. It's the only way we know how to play and it would be dangerous if we tried to play any other way."

The manager has already confirmed Fletcher, who's struggled with a serious virus for the last two months, won't start against the Blues, but the Scot is confident his team-mates will bounce back from last Sunday's disappointment at Arsenal.

"We try and learn from every defeat and we know sometimes defeat makes us stronger. We hope that's the case this time. Everybody was disappointed after Arsenal, especially because it was such a key match. But the title's still in our hands and that's all you can ask with three games to go."

stepney feeling confident

Quote:
former united and chelsea keeper alex stepney, a european cup winner with the reds in 1968, looks ahead to sunday's contest...

just how big is this game?

we've reached a defining point of the season but we've got to be confident. We've played 17 home games this season in the league and we've won 16 of them and drawn the other. On sunday, it's all about winning and we've been lucky in the sense that we were able to rest a few players on wednesday night. The lads did so well in the first leg of the champions league semi-final that sir alex was able to make a lot of changes for the schalke game. That's important because chelsea will have had an entire week's rest since they last played.

united have beaten chelsea twice already this season...
that's right, and that will give our players an awful lot of confidence. We haven't had the best of luck in games against chelsea in recent seasons. You'll remember didier drogba's offside goal last season, for instance. But by beating them in those two champions league games, it was almost as if that hoodoo was broken.

there's no danger of complacency on sunday, is there?

not at all. You can bet sir alex never misses an opportunity to remind his players what they did to us last year - they won the league by a point - and how it happened. The message will be simple: Go out there and bring that trophy back to old trafford. The champions league can go on the back-burner now - that's done with. All the players need to focus on for the next three games is the league. Win this one and then we only need a point from blackburn or blackpool.

do you expect chelsea to attack?
not from the beginning, no. But they will be confident. They've won five of their last six games so they're on a roll and they'll be determined to stamp their authority on the game in the early stages. But they'll also know that if they concede then they're going to need to score twice, which isn't easy at old trafford.

This match would be like a Play Off Final.. Win the match win the competition!
Setuju sama pendapat Sir Alex..

Jangan terlalu terpancing bermain terbuka. Karena kalo sampai match ini lepas,

We're ready for Chelsea

Sir Alex Ferguson says his players are fully aware of the job they need to do on Sunday when Chelsea visit Old Trafford and the United manager is confident they won't let him down.

United's defeat at Arsenal last weekend has opened the door for the defending champions who appeared to be out of the title race just a few weeks ago. The Reds still hold their destiny in their own hands and know victory on Sunday will all but guarantee a record 19th championship crown.

"Everyone's aware of the magnitude of Sunday's game and it's one we're looking forward to," Sir Alex told reporters at his pre-match press conference.

"Last Sunday's result has certainly brought an awareness to us of how important this game is and I think it's one of the reasons I had to pick the team I did on Wednesday. It's given us a fresh team for Sunday. It should be a fantastic match and if we win, we should win the league."

The Reds possess one of the best home records in Europe having dropped just two points all season in the league. And the boss is hoping his team can produce can another match-winning display against Ancelotti's men.

"Our home form is a big advantage. That's the reason we're there [on top]," said Sir Alex. "It's probably the best in Europe. Some of our performances at home have been absolutely terrific. Hopefully we get the result we want."

United v Chelsea

Victory over Chelsea would leave United just one point away from the title…

Form guide
There's no getting away from the statistics: Chelsea have won five of their last six games in all competitions and are on a roll. That said, the one game they didn't win was against United. At Old Trafford. The Reds, meanwhile, go into the game after losing the last league encounter but, in the meantime, progressing to the Champions League final.

Ins and outs
Darren Fletcher still isn't ready to start a match, according to Sir Alex, after getting a few minutes under his belt in the midweek win over Schalke. The midfielder had missed the previous 12 games due to a virus. The boss says Patrice Evra "should be fine" despite picking up a knock on Wednesday night, while Wayne Rooney was merely rested and is expected to start on Sunday. United's only absentee is long-term casualty Owen Hargreaves. Chelsea are in even better shape, with nobody reported to be out or facing a late fitness test.

Last meeting
In a classic Champions League quarter-final encounter, United carried a one-goal lead into the second leg at Old Trafford, where goals from Javier Hernandez and Ji-Sung Park either side of Didier Drogba’s breakaway strike sealed a 3-1 aggregate win and progression to the last four.

Top man
In comparison to the hubbub caused by Chelsea’s capture of Fernando Torres on the January transfer deadline day, David Luiz’s arrival at Stamford Bridge was low-key. And yet his impact on the pitch has been anything but. The Brazilian centre-half has taken to the Barclays Premier League like a duck to water and has impressed during his 11 appearances thus far. Famed for his big hair, Luiz is known for his attacking tendencies as much as his defensive ability and has already scored twice for the Blues.

Quote/unquote
“We must be favourites for the title, only because we are three points ahead. But that can evaporate quite quickly as we realised against Arsenal on Sunday. We have a big job to do yet – we have three games left and the drama is not finished.” – Sir Alex Ferguson

Any sub-plots?
Sub-plots? Who cares! There's only one thing at stake on Sunday and that's three points. Whoever wins will, more than likely, go on to lift the Barclays Premier League trophy. Any Vidic v Torres or Lampard v Carrick battles are incidental this weekend.

Whistle-blower
Howard Webb
is a man used to the big occasion. Widely regarded as the best referee in the Premier League, the former policeman’s talents were recognised by both UEFA and FIFA last season, who selected him to take charge of both the Champions League and World Cup finals.

Did you know?
The last time United conceded a first-half goal at Old Trafford in the league was during last season’s 2-1 defeat to Chelsea, when Joe Cole flicked the ball past Edwin van der Sar at the near post.

Rivals watch
Manchester City will secure a top-four finish with three games to spare if they win at Everton and Tottenham lose at home to Blackpool on Saturday. Arsenal have a tough game against Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium on Sunday.

Manchester United vs Chelsea Preview : 8th May 2011

Quote:

Chelsea will be taking on Manchester United at Old Trafford in what could be the biggest match of Chelsea's season so far. It will probably decide the future of Carlo Ancelotti as reports have suggested that the Italian could be sacked if he loses to Manchester United on Sunday. The stakes are quite high at the moment as both sides still have the possibility of losing out on the title. Manchester United are by no means home and dry, while Chelsea have little to lose. The situation is pretty simple for Chelsea, who can overtake Man Utd with any sort of a win.

Of all the worries that could potentially be on Carlo Ancelotti's mind at the moment, the question
that seems to be repeatedly fired at him has to be the striker situation. Does Ancelotti go for the pairing of Didier Drogba and Fernando Torres, or does he stick with the 4-3-3 that has been so rewarding in recent matches? It was the biggest conundrum during the second-leg Champions League quarter-finals, but Ancelotti failed miserably with his decisions that time around. However, situations have improved since then; with Torres scoring his first Chelsea goal and Chelsea threatening once again in the 4-3-3 formation.

Ever since the Torres was dropped in favour of the 4-3-3, Chelsea have fared better. So, all eyes will be on Ancelotti and his team selection. Weirdly, he seems to have adopted the same strategy once again by saying that the team selection is not that important. However, it is the way that the team plays matters the most. You may remember that it was the same kind of reply and the response he got from the team that brought curtains to Chelsea's Champions League aspirations this season. Nobody can doubt that Chelsea are much better than Manchester United on recent form, but a whole lot hinges on the team selection and formation. If Torres is paired with Drogba upfront in a 4-2-2 formation, then United do have the upper hand especially with Howard Webb refereeing the match.

On the other hand, if Torres is dropped in favour of the 4-3-3, then Chelsea could well overtake United on goal difference and thus their hopes of a 19th title. There is no doubt that Torres is a world-class striker, but this is just not the moment for experimenting or trying to get the best out of him.
