Gerrard out of England squad, Young to start

Soccernet - August 11, 2009

Steven Gerrard has pulled out of the England squad for Wednesday night's friendly against Holland because of a groin injury.

The FA confirmed on Tuesday morning the Liverpool captain would return to his club due to concerns over a "tight groin" and that Ashley Young would start in his place.

"I cannot clone Stevie,'' observed coach Fabio Capello. "Every player has a different style and Ashley Young is really important because he is one of the English players who can dribble and take people on one-on-one.

"He has only played twice for me. The first time it was so-so. The second he played very well.

"Now he needs the confidence to perform against one of the best national sides in the world.

HOLLAND U-21 0-0 ENGLAND U-21
Entertaining draw in Holland

Soccernet - August 12, 2009

England Under-21s came under sustained pressure but escaped with a goalless draw against their Dutch counterparts.

In a game with plenty of chances for both sides it was the goalkeepers who came out smiling at the end as a combination of some fine saves and a handful of bad misses kept the sheets clean at both ends.

There was a 30-minute run out for hotly-tipped Jack Wilshere - mentioned as a possible senior call-up for the World Cup - but the Arsenal teenager struggled to make an impact.

The introduction of Wilshere was one of eight changes that manager Stuart Pearce made through the course of the game as he looks to replace a number of stars who graduated from the team following the European Championships.

England were restricted to long-range efforts in the first half, but neither Jack Rodwell nor Michael Mancienne could do much to worry Newcastle's Tim Krul in the Dutch goal.

Micah Richards had the best chances of the first half for England but he headed over and then his low shot was held by Krul.

The Dutch, meanwhile, were creating plenty of chances, with another Arsenal youngster, Nacer Barazite, at the centre of most things they did.

However, Watford's Scott Loach stood firm in the England goal before being replaced by Blackburn youngster Frank Fielding, on loan at Rochdale, at half-time.

The game became disrupted as the substitutes piled on early in the second half, but once the changes were made, Barazite resumed to terrorising the England defence, forcing Fielding into a good parried save in the 69th minute.

And it was Fielding who England could thank for a draw as he pulled off an outstanding save to deny Vurnon Anita with two minutes left in the match.

HOLLAND U21: Krul, Janmaat, Van Eijden (Bruma 46min), Pieters (Blind 46), Kuiper, Donald (John 63), Fer (Van Der Heijden 46), Barazite, De Jong, Biseswar, Emnes (Anita 63). Booked: Janmaat.

ENGLAND U21: Loach (Fielding 46), Richards (Naughton 58), Gibbs (Bertrand 58), Mancienne, Tomkins, Rodwell (Smalling 58), Stanislas (Sears 83), Cattermole (Carroll 71), Delph (Wilshere 58), Rose, Vaughan (Sturridge 46).

Referee: Babak Rafati (Germany).

Default XI players hoping to catch Capello's eye

Goalkeeper
Ben Foster (Manchester United) Age 26 Caps 2

Seven days ago, Ben Foster seemed on the verge of finally making his breakthrough, yet the biggest week of his career was a crushing disappointment. A nervous display for Manchester United in the penalty shoot-out defeat to Chelsea in Sunday's FA Community Shield did little to convince anyone that he is the heir apparent for both club and country. He subsequently pulled out of the England squad for Wednesday's friendly against the Netherlands with a knee injury, a further blow to his chances of establishing himself as the leading candidate to replace David James, 39, as England's first-choice keeper. Foster will, however, get his chance this season. Sir Alex Ferguson recently showed his faith in Foster, a player he spotted while watching son Darren play for Wrexham, with a four-year contract. With Edwin van der Sar out for two months, Foster is set for a protracted run in the side, including playing in the Champions League, which is a vital benchmark for Capello. At the age of 26, it is a chance he has to take.

Defence
Micah Richards (Manchester City) Age 21 Caps 11

This is a crucial moment for Richards, who has been a disappointment for the last two seasons. Great things were predicted for the powerful defender when he won his first cap in November 2006 under the former England head coach Steve McClaren. Yet Richards has all but disappeared from the international scene since Capello took charge and he can have few complaints. His form nosedived at City, where his love of flashy jewellery and fast cars earned him the tag "Mr Bling." Richards has been given another chance by his City manager, Mark Hughes, but this will be his last as the owners' impatience will not tolerate another mediocre season. Richards' summer started badly, with a dose of swine flu while on holiday in Cyprus that he initially mistook for alcohol poisoning. However, his composed performances for the Under-21s in the European Championship in June will have earned him a few brownie points with Capello. The ultimate bling ? the World Cup trophy ? beckons.

Defence
Gary Cahill (Bolton) Age 23 Caps 0

The Aston Villa manager, Martin O'Neill, has assembled a fine crop of young Englishmen, but Cahill is the one that got away. Not even an internet campaign from Villa fans urging him to be retained could prevent the young centre-half signing for Bolton for £5m in January 2008. His aerial strength and ability on the ball has since prompted his manager Gary Megson to claim: "He's the best young centre-half in the country by an absolute street." The OTT assessment gained some credibility, however, when Capello called Cahill into the England squad for the qualifier in Kazakhstan in June in place of the injured Rio Ferdinand. Capello has been keeping an eye on Cahill for some time, and is understood to be impressed with the Yorkshire-born player's measured approach when in possession, a legacy of his earlier incarnation as a midfield player.

Defence
Ledley King (Tottenham) Age 28 Caps 19

It seems far-fetched but the biggest crock in English football could yet have a part to play in South Africa. King has no need to impress Capello with his ability, as the Italian is a confirmed admirer of the Spurs defender's pace, composure and versatility. But King's fitness could rule him out, just as it did in 2006. The cartilage in his left knee is effectively wrecked and the bones rub together when he runs, causing fluid which requires time to drain away. The injury means he spends lonely hours in the gym or pool between games instead of training with his team-mates. King's participation for South Africa would be totally unthinkable were it not for Capello's shock decision to call him into the squad in March. King, of course, withdrew with injury but Capello kept the door open, saying: "We hope he has an international future because he's a very interesting player ? one of the best centre-backs."

Defence
Kieran Gibbs (Arsenal) Age 19 Caps 0

Capello has been impressed with the manner in which Arsenal's teenage left-back coped in the aftermath of his catastrophic mistake in last season's Champions League semi-final with Manchester United. The second leg at the Emirates Stadium was only minutes old when Gibbs lost his footing and Park Ji-sung scored a vital away goal to knock the stuffing out of the Gunners. Gibbs did not hide, and bounced back with impressive displays in the remainder of Arsenal's Premier League fixtures and later on England Under-21 duty at the European Championships in Sweden. His coach at that level, Stuart Pearce, described Gibbs as having crammed "two years' worth of experience into two months" and paid tribute to the teenager's mental toughness. If Gibbs gets the chances to play at Arsenal this season he could yet put pressure on the likes of Wayne Bridge and Leighton Baines for the role of understudy to the former Arsenal left-back Ashley Cole.

Midfield
Jack Wilshere (Arsenal) Age 17 Caps 0

His Premier League experience amounts to six minutes as a substitute, but Jack Wilshere is a genuine contender for the World Cup squad, according to Capello. The 17-year-old's precocious talents may only have been witnessed in brief glimpses but they have been enough to suggest here is the kind of player we have been waiting for. His composed performances against Atletico Madrid and Rangers in the Emirates Cup earlier this month, under Capello's watchful eye, mean every time he appears this season he will have the burden of expectation thrust upon him. It may not be fair for such a young man to carry such a load, but evidence suggests Wilshere could be up to the task. With an upright gait and a classy left foot, 5ft 5in Wilshere has been likened to both Paul Gascoigne and Liam Brady. Hopefully, his career will more closely resemble that of the latter.

Midfield
Owen Hargreaves (Manchester United) Age 28 Caps 42

It is almost a year since Hargreaves last played a competitive match ? 21 September against Chelsea. Since then he has undergone surgery on both knees in an effort to cure tendinitis and his comeback is continually being delayed. But, before he was injured it was clear that Hargreaves was at the heart of Capello's plans. The truth is that no English midfielder does what he does better than him ? and that is winning the ball. United might not been outplayed so comprehensively by Barcelona in the Champions League final last season had Hargreaves been fit. The player will have to demonstrate to Capello he is strong enough to cope with the demands of an international tournament, on the back of a long lay-off. But lest we forget, he was England's best player in Germany, in 2006, and his tenacity in midfield could be decisive against the best nations in the world.

Attack
Danny Welbeck (Manchester United) Age 18 Caps 0

The Old Trafford youth system has produced a stream of talent such as David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and the Neville brothers ? but no leading strikers. In fact, the last top-class forward to emerge from the United youth system was Mark Hughes more than 25 years ago. That could be about to change if local boy Danny Welbeck delivers on his potential. Welbeck's lanky, languid style has seen him likened to both Kanu and Emmanuel Adebayor. He marked his Premier League debut with a spectacular goal in the 5-0 thrashing of Stoke last November. Sir Alex Ferguson is convinced of his talents. In May Ferguson said: "Danny's a certainty to make it at the highest level. I've told England coach Fabio Capello the boy will be in his World Cup squad next year. Wide left or right or through the middle, he has the intelligence, guts, athleticism and talent to do the job. When he completes his growing, he'll really be something." Now Ferguson just has to give Welbeck the chance to prove him right.

Midfield
Fabian Delph (Aston Villa) Age 19 Caps 0

The England midfield is a hard nut to crack for young players, but Fabian Delph could be the man to do it. At least he should get the chance at Aston Villa after Gareth Barry's departure to Manchester City. Villa's manager, Martin O'Neill, spent £6m of the Barry money on taking Delph from Leeds, and intends to play him at the centre of his midfield. Delph ? a product of Bradford City's youth programme ? is only a teenager but he has already played two full seasons as a professional at Leeds, where he excited numerous Premier League scouts with his pace, power and goalscoring threat. The TV pundit Jamie Redknapp has likened Delph's all-action, energetic style to that of a young Steven Gerrard. O'Neill certainly believes he has picked up a gem, and it will not have escaped Delph's attention that O'Neill signed Ashley Young from Watford in 2007 and helped to turn him into an England international.

Midfield
James Milner (Aston Villa) Age 23 Caps 1

James Milner has to show he can make the transition from Under-21s, where he has a record 46 caps, to the senior side but did well when coming on against the Netherlands. Historically, players with plenty of Under-21 experience, such as Scott Carson, David Prutton, David Dunn, and Jermaine Pennant, fail to step up a level. In addition, when Joe Cole returns to fitness in a few weeks' time, Milner's place in the full England squad may be in jeopardy but Capello has faith in him, describing him as "the future". The England manager loves pace and width, which is why he is so impressed with Milner who is quick, hard-working and has a wonderful touch with both feet. Also in his favour is Milner's level-headedness. He is mature beyond his years, shunning alcohol in favour of extra practice.

Attack
Michael Owen (Manchester United) Age 29 Caps 89

England could owe Sir Alex Ferguson an enormous debt of gratitude next summer. The Scot gave Owen the chance to revive his sinking career at a time when few managers would touch the striker with a very long bargepole. Owen's free transfer to Old Trafford means that his every goal and every miss will be assessed with an England recall in mind. It is almost two years since Owen took his international goal tally to 40 with a pair of goals against Russia in September 2007. The last time Owen appeared for England was 16 months ago when he was an ineffectual half-time substitute for Wayne Rooney in a 1-0 defeat by France. Yet Capello knows that Owen performing again at his best would be a certainty for the squad for South Africa. The pressure is certainly on the striker now, after four miserable seasons with Newcastle United. But already his arrival at Manchester United has marked a change in attitude from Capello. "The door is open," the England manager said about Owen last week.

Tipis, Inggris Tekuk Slovenia
Arya Perdhana - detiksport

Di lini depan, Wayne Rooney berpasangan dengan Emile Heskey jadi ujung tombak The Three Lions.

Menit ketiga pertandingan, para pendukung Inggris dibuat deg-degan ketika sebuah serangan balik Slovenia memaksa kiper Robert Green memegang bola di luar kotak penalti.

Sembilan menit berselang, Inggris akhirnya membuka skor melalui penalti Frank Lampard. Penalti dijatuhkan wasit setelah Bostjan Cesar didakwa menarik baju Rooney.

Susunan pemain
Inggris: Green, Johnson, Upson (Lescott 64), Terry, A, Cole, Wright-Phillips (Lennon 46), Lampard (Carrick 46), Barry, Gerrard (Milner 46), Rooney (C. Cole 80), Heskey (Defoe 46)

Slovenia: Handanovic, Brecko, Suler, Cesar (Mavric 34), Jokic, Radosavljevic (Krhin 77), Koren, Kirm (Stevanovic 78), Dedic (Pecnik 71), Birsa (Komac 65), Novakovic (Ljubijankic 55).

Capello Sedih, Konsentrasi Inggris Melemah

Saya mendapat banyak pelajaran.

(AP)

Pemain Slovenia Kecam "Diving" Rooney
