Lord Justice Goldring Committed to Hillsborough Inquest Starting on Time

Lord Justice Goldring has insisted he remains committed to ensuring there will be no delay to the inquest into the deaths of 96 Liverpool fans at Hillsborough in 1989.

At a preliminary hearing at London's Thistle Hotel on Monday, Lord Justice Goldring set out a timetable ahead of the final inquest, which has been scheduled for March 31, 2014.

Quote:
David Conn
@david_conn
Hillsborough pre-inquest hearing is finished. Huge scale of evidence over 96 people dead. Coroner determined new inquest will start March 31
And Lord Justice Goldring made it clear, per the Liverpool Echo’s live blog, that there will be no delays:

Quote:
There may be a degree of micro management that needs to be done but I am absolutely determined to ensure the inquests take place when I promised they would on March 31st next year.
A report by ITV had further comment from Lord Justice Goldring:

Quote:
I certainly remain committed to that date and it is partly for that reason that I have sought, obviously through those who are helping me, to drive those investigations forward as much as I can.

I shall not cease, so that it is absolutely clear, to seek to drive these investigations onwards as much as I conceivably can.
On April 15, 1989, 96 Liverpool fans lost their lives during the Reds’ FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest.

The hearing will take place after the verdicts of accidental death from the original inquest in March 1991 were quashed.

Per a report by ITV, many family members were in attendance at the pre-hearing in London. Hotel staff had to provide extra seating to ensure everyone could get in.

The ITV report also stated that: “Pete Weatherby QC, representing 21 victims' families, told the hearing that handheld footage filmed by police at Hillsborough might have been edited.”

Steven Kelly lost his brother in the disaster and he gave an interview to Sky News:

“It's so shocking. Every new inquest into Hillsborough there is new evidence which suggests a cover-up.”

Quote:

@MerseyHack
PW: concern over provenance of TV & other footage of #Hillsborough. Should be original tapes but they not sure they have it
The inquest into the deaths of the 96 will take place in Warrington, and Lord Justice Goldring indicated that they would sit five days a week to ensure the hearing does not "go on and on."

Default Re: Football Tragedy [forever Remembered]

As Hillsborough anniversary approaches, football must not forget all those who have been loved and lost in stadium tragedies

Ian Hambridge was 15 years old and standing next to a 12ft wall at St Andrew's when it collapsed during rioting between Birmingham and Leeds supporters on May 11 1985.

It is one of football’s forgotten tragedies.

On that fateful day he suffered injuries to his head and chest when the wall collapsed during the battles that took place during a pitch invasion.

He died in Smethwick’s Neurological Hospital the following day. It was his first football match.

Next month our game will unite, with supporters all over the country standing to respect the victims of the Hillsborough disaster on the 25th anniversary, before the re-scheduled 3.07pm kick-offs.

It is part of a planned weekend of remembrance for the 96 supporters who died at the FA Cup semi-final on April 15, 1989.

This is a sensitive and delicate issue, particularly at a distressing time for the families who demand the truth into the events that day.

The families of the victims are still waiting for answers after all this time. If they keep fighting they will get them.

The deaths of the 96 were not related to hooliganism, or the mindless acts of violence that took place at St Andrew's in 1985.

In Northampton, where the family of Ian Hambridge still live, they are still waiting for satisfactory answers nearly 30 years on.

They waved their son out of the family home that afternoon and he did not return. They have rarely spoken about the tragedy.

Ian had travelled with four friends, heading into Birmingham to watch them take on Eddie Gray’s team on the final day of the league season.

Even now the CCTV footage from that shameful day, taken from surveillance officers inside Birmingham City’s stadium, leaves you feeling dirty and disgusted.

When Mr Justice Popplewell delivered his report into the tragic events of 1985, he described the scenes at St Andrew's as ‘more like the Battle of Agincourt than a football match’.

The barbaric scenes, on the day Birmingham were supposed to be celebrating promotion back to the old First Division under Ron Saunders, do not belong to any age.

Even on YouTube, it should have an 18 certificate.

On the same day, 128 miles up the road at Valley Parade in Bradford, 56 supporters lost their lives when a fire broke out inside the Main Stand during their Third Division game against Lincoln.

The 250 or more who were injured, or suffered burns when the fire swept through the drafty stand five minutes before half-time, have largely been forgotten.

Later that month, when Liverpool travelled to Belgium to play Juventus in the European Cup final, 39 supporters died when a wall collapsed at the archaic Heysel Stadium. Football must remember.

It is as a result of these horrifying events that we now feel safe and secure when we head out to watch our teams around the country.

Security at stadium is vastly improved, there is more accessibility and the atmosphere is far more welcoming than it ever was in 1985.

Back then there was a menacing air at almost every match, with police herding visiting supporters from railways stations to terraces and leaving them to stew for hours before kick-off.

Stadiums were dilapidated, crumbling and antiquated. Many believed football was a dying sport.

There was a sinister under-current at almost every match, conditions that seem inconceivable unless you have actually experienced the oppressive atmosphere of football in the Eighties.

Today, football fans can mix in pubs and bars in town and city centres before matches, sharing a pre-match pint in a largely safe and secure environment.

This growing spirit within the game must be embraced and it is particularly poignant with the 25th anniversary of Hillsborough approaching.

On April 13, when Liverpool play Manchester City at Anfield in the Barclays Premier League, there will be a minute’s silence at 1.36pm.

Liverpool’s players will wear commemorative patches on their shirts and will continue to do so until the end of the season as a tribute to those who lost their lives.

Every other fixture, including those in the Football League and the Conference, will also pay their respects ahead of 3.07pm kick offs.

At the FA Cup semi-finals, the kick-off time for Arsenal-Wigan on Saturday April 12 has been moved to 5.07pm. The following day, Sheffield United’s clash with Hull is at 4.07pm.

It is to be hoped that every fan of every team in the country will respect the occasion by remaining silent in the minute before kick off.

When the referee’s whistle blows around the country next month, the attention will naturally turn to the tragic events at Hillsborough.

When they do, football must not forget all those who have been loved and lost.

Hillsborough 25th anniversary tributes begin with seven-minute delays

English football will mark the 25th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster this weekend with a series of commemorative tributes to the 96 Liverpool supporters who died.

The FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest in 1989 stopped at 3.06pm. The two semi-finals at Wembley and all matches in the top eight tiers of the English league system will kick off seven minutes after their normal scheduled starts, following a minute's silence.

At Anfield on Sunday, scarves from all clubs in the top four divisions will display a number 96 on the pitch before Liverpool's Premier League game against Manchester City. Cards will also be held up by fans for a mosaic tribute spelling out "96 25 years". Ninety-six blue and red roses and wreaths will be presented by City officials to Kenny Dalglish and Ian Rush.

Players and officials at the Wigan Athletic v Arsenal and Hull City v Sheffield United semi‑finals will wear black armbands. Ninety‑six seats have been set aside at the stadium for both games and each will have a Liverpool scarf upon it in memory of those who lost their lives. A number of the families of the 96 will also be in attendance for semi-final between Wigan v Arsenal on Saturday.

Captains will lay wreaths in their technical areas and the names of the 96 victims will be visible on the digital boards around the stadium during a minute's silence.

A new inquest on those who lost their lives in the disaster began on 31*March and is expected to last several months.

Empty Wembley seats mark Hillsborough tragedy
Last updated 03:30 13/04/2014

Ninety-six seats were left empty and draped with Liverpool scarves at the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley Stadium on Saturday (local time) as English football paused to remember the Hillsborough tragedy that took place 25 years ago this weekend.

Matches in the top eight senior English divisions kicked off at seven minutes past the hour to mark the anniversary with the especially poignant commemoration taking place at the national stadium where Arsenal were up against Wigan Athletic.

The disaster, in which 96 Liverpool fans died at the FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest, occurred on April 15, 1989 with the match abandoned at 3.06pm, six minutes after kickoff.

Every senior game in England kicked off late with a minute's silence following the six-minute delay to kickoff times.

At Wembley the 96 seats were left empty level with the half-way line each with a Liverpool scarf laid on it.

The captains of both Arsenal and Wigan were laying wreaths in the technical area with the names of the victims visible on the electronic scoreboard around the stadium.

Players wore black armbands, and fans and players alike observed the minute's silence in the Premier League, the three Football League divisions, the Conference and the Conference's three feeder leagues.

The memorial was expected to be observed at lower leagues throughout the country as well.

Services are also being held at Liverpool's home ground Anfield and neighbouring Goodison Park, the home of Everton on Tuesday, the actual anniversary of the tragedy, the worst sporting disaster in British sporting history.

A new inquest into the disaster opened last week and is expected to last until next year

Manchester United Stand Side-by-Side with Liverpool in Hillsborough Tribute

Manchester United have shown their support for bitter rivals Liverpool as the football world comes together to remember the 25th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster.

The Red Devils tweeted a touching picture showing United and Liverpool players shaking hands:

Quote:

Today we stand side-by-side with @LFC to remember the 96 fans who lost their lives at Hillsborough on 15 April 1989.
It's a gesture that Liverpool had earlier in the year echoed by remembering United's own terrible loss of life in the Munich air disaster:

Quote:

@LFC
Thinking of those who lost their lives in the Munich air crash. Some things are more important than football rivalry.
The two clubs and their sets of supporters have often been at loggerheads as they compete for the biggest prizes in football, but they have shown they can put their rivalry to one side.

United in respect: Liverpool's old rivals in Manchester share Hillsborough tribute

Liverpool's biggest rivals, Manchester United, shared a touching tribute to the 96 Hillsborough victims on the 25th anniversary of the tragedy.

United posted an image on Twitter featuring two figures dressed in each club's kit, standing on a podium emblazoned with the word 'respect', shaking hands under the banner 'United.'

United released the following message to accompany the image: 'Today we stand side-by-side with Liverpool FC to remember the 96 fans who lost their lives at Hillsborough on 15 April 1989.'

Standing together: Old rivals Manchester United shared this tribute to the victims via Twitter

British Prime Minister David Cameron joined the chorus of tributes to the Hillsborough victims ahead of a memorial service on Tuesday.

Cameron said on Twitter: 'On the 25th anniversary of Hillsborough, my thoughts are with the families of the 96, the survivors & all those affected by the tragedy.'

UEFA President Michel Platini said that the whole of European football was standing behind Liverpool as they remembered their fallen supporters.

'The thoughts of UEFA and the European football family remain with the families of those who lost their lives in this tragedy, 25 years ago,' said Platini.

Liverpool's players will be in attendance as Anfield hosts the annual memorial service.

Tuesday marks the 25th anniversary of when 96 Liverpool supporters were killed at the Reds' FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest in Sheffield.

The whole Liverpool squad will be present along with directors, other staff and a number of former players and managers.

Current manager Brendan Rodgers will give a reading, as will Everton boss Roberto Martinez.

Remembered: Former Liverpool striker posted this image with the names of all 96 Hillsborough victims

It is an emotional week for Liverpool, and a number of tributes were also held prior to Sunday's game against Manchester City.

Captain Steven Gerrard, whose 10-year-old cousin Jon-Paul Gilhooley was the youngest of the 96 victims, was in tears after his side's 3-2 win over one of their main title rivals.

Gerrard said: 'The reason I was so emotional was because of when this game fell.

'It wasn't just because it was a big match in our season, it was because this week is always about more than football for everyone associated with Liverpool. It's emotional for so many people.

Respect: Tributes were paid to the victims of Hillsborough at Anfield on Sunday

'I'm speaking on behalf of everyone when I say the win was dedicated to the victims and families of Hillsborough.

'All the squad will be present at the service to pay our respects as we should.'
During the service, the number '96' will be laid out on the pitch in large figures made up of scarves donated by fans of all clubs and from various sporting institutions.

Kenny Dalglish, manager at the time of the disaster, assisted in this initiative by writing to all 92 League clubs as well as the English, Northern Irish, Scottish and Welsh national teams for support.

The inspiration for the idea came from the 'mile of scarves' formed between Anfield and Goodison Park a week after the disaster in commemoration in 1989. More than 4,000 scarves were tied together.

The scarves will be donated to local good causes, including homeless charities, after the service by the Liverpool FC Foundation.

Next week, a celebration of the lives of the 96 victims is planned with a charity match in support of the Hillsborough Family Support Group.

A team of UK and Irish Liverpool legends, managed by Dalglish, will take on a side of international Reds greats, under the charge of Gerard Houllier.

The commemorations come a fortnight after fresh inquests into the deaths of the 96 victims opened in Warrington.

Hillsborough, 25 Years On: Exposure Keeps Growing and Justice Is Coming

The events of April 15, 1989, are firmly and indelibly etched in the minds of anybody and everybody associated with Liverpool Football Club.

Even those—players, young supporters, families, new managers—who had no particular connection with the club at the time of the Hillsborough disaster are well aware of the circumstances surrounding that day, the 96 people who died and the ongoing fight for justice from the families of those who died.

It has been a long, bitter and—for far too many years—fruitless struggle for those involved in the search for truth and accountability from those involved, but, finally, slowly, the past couple of anniversaries have come with hope.

Hope that not only will the ignorant be educated, the scornful put to shame and the lessons of the past learnt, but also that those who were in the wrong and then later, awfully, tried so hard to cover up their errors would face justice.

Year on year, the appeals, the chants and the calls for justice would continue, but only relatively recently (compared to the 25 years since the disaster occurred) have those in power been seen to do anything of note about it.

Now, a quarter of a century after Hillsborough happened, the families and the club itself continue to move toward finding out the whole truth, and thus finding peace, when, in the end, those at fault are brought to justice.

And it seems now that it will happen.

Time is the great healer, but time also brings something else: progression.

In this instance, progression of technology and the advent of social media. Take Hillsborough; if the new enquiry had occurred 10 years ago—still over a decade too late, of course—would there be widespread coverage of it? Would tens of thousands of fans in dozens of countries all over the world unite in spreading the same message of seeking the answers which have evaded the families for so long?

Would the Prime Minister's speech, his apology to the families for their double injustice, have resonated so widely across the footballing world?

Would clubs from all reaches of the game show such solidarity, which, crucially, could be seen by everybody even if they were not even remotely connected to the country the club played in?

Unlikely.

But of course, perhaps that's the point as well; it wouldn't have happened then in part because there was not enough of a single, demanding voice which could not be stopped, silenced, ignored.

Now, though, we all see, we all read, we all know.

There is no hiding place left, there is no opportunity to bury heads in the ground and wait for the storm to pass.

The exposure given to the Hillsborough memorial service at Anfield, the coverage from mainstream media interviewing former players, people who were at the semi-final match in '89, people who lost family members—all of it continues to increase, year on year.

It's not because it's a topical news item—though it is one, clearly—nor because of a lack of other news.

It's because the outrage is the same from every corner: This has gone on too long.

But no longer for an unspecified amount of time. No longer is there no end in sight. The investigations continue, more names are called to question, and more uncomfortable, fabricated or forgotten answers are demanded.

The exposure keeps growing, and there is no place to hide.

Justice is coming for the 96 and their families.
