Manchester United and England forward Lauren James becomes latest victim of sickening racist abuse online after she had monkey emojis sent to her on Instagram following similar incidents involving Marcus Rashford, Axel Tuanzebe and Reece James

* Lauren James is the latest player to have been racially abused on social media
* The Manchester United forward, 19, posted a screenshot of a hateful comment
* James urged Instagram to crack down on the recent spate of similar incidents
* Axel Tuanzebe was racially abused for the second time in 10 days on Saturday
* Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Reece James were sent vile messages

Manchester United and England forward Lauren James is the latest footballer to have been subjected to sickening racist abuse on social media.

James, 19, shared the vile screenshot of a number of monkey emojis directed to her by one particular user under her Instagram upload.

A number of players have received similar messages in recent days as part of a worrying spate of abuse - and James has now added her voice to the growing movement hoping to create change on online platforms.

Manchester United and England player Lauren James has been racially abused on Instagram. James posted the screenshot of a hateful social media comment with the caption 'boring now'

James labelled the abuse she received as 'boring now' and followed up her viewpoint with a passionate post appealing to Instagram to crack down on racism.

She wrote: 'Instagram on a real need to do something about it or they will lose so many individuals on their platform - cause (sic) that's the only way they will actually listen!

'Some smart person out there has got to be coming up with a platform where you have to prove ID to sign up.

The 19-year-old urged Instagram to crack down on the number of racist messages on the site

James insisted a clear 'racism' option in Instagram's reporting system could be implemented

'Instagram doesn't even have a clear "racism" option in their reporting system. Could even just remove any emojis with racist meanings. Too easy for some kid to press a few emojis in order to try and grab some attention.

'Too much talk around these days, and nothing ever gets done. Usual story.'

United stars Marcus Rashford, Axel Tuanzebe, Anthony Martial and Chelsea defender Reece James, Lauren's older brother, have all been involved in similar incidents.

Tuanzebe, 23, became a victim of racist abuse for the second time in just over a week following the 3-3 draw with Everton on Sunday as United let two leads slip.

Rashford and Martial, along with Tuanzebe, were also both targeted after the defeat by Sheffield United - and Greater Manchester Police revealed they will be launching an investigation.

Sportsmail reported on Thursday that Premier League clubs have been left furious after it was revealed that monkey emojis don't break racism rules on Twitter.

It is understood that a number of top-flight teams flagged offensive tweets to the platform - in which the emoji was flagrantly used in a hateful manner.

They were left disgusted, however, after receiving responses stating that no action would be taken against the offender because they had not broken the social media giant's regulations.

Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden penned a memo to the FA to underline the Government's commitment to helping eradicate online abuse aimed at players online.

But the demand for change has not deterred a number of users from continuing to racially abuse footballers.

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich sent a letter to every player at the club condemning the hateful messages some have received and offering his support.

Southampton teenager Alexandre Jankewitz, 19, was subjected to hurtful comments after being sent off on his Premier League debut against Manchester United.

Hampshire Police have since launched a probe into the posts.

A man was arrested last week, meanwhile, for the racist abuse West Brom midfielder Romaine Sawyers received after the 5-0 defeat by Manchester City.

Manchester United Women will play their FIRST-EVER match at Old Trafford when they host West Ham on March 27 - as boss Casey Stoney hails 'special' landmark and hopes 'there will be many more opportunities in the future'

* Manchester United Women will entertain West Ham at Old Trafford on March 27
* The WSL clash has been switched from their usual Leigh Sports Village base
* The Theatre of Dreams will also host the opener of next year's Women's Euros

Manchester United Women will play their first ever match at Old Trafford next week.

Casey Stoney's high-flying side are moving from their Leigh Sports Village base for the Women's Super League clash with West Ham on March 27.

The 11.30am kick-off will be a historic moment for United Women as they step out at Old Trafford for the first time, albeit in front of empty stands due to the ongoing impact of Covid-19.

'Playing at Old Trafford will obviously be a special moment in the history of this team and it's a fantastic opportunity to showcase the women's game which has seen huge growth over the last few years,' United boss Stoney said.

'We of course will miss our fans, they are such an important part of this club and we have felt their amazing support from afar throughout the season.

'We are all eager to get them back in the stands as soon as possible and hope that there will be many more opportunities to play at Old Trafford in the future.'

Old Trafford will host the opener of next year's Women's Euros and United chief operating officer Collette Roche said they are 'thrilled' to be hosting Stoney's side there this month.

Manchester United Women will play at Old Trafford for the first time in their history next week. The Theatre of Dreams will host the Red Devils' WSL clash against West Ham on March 27. Manchester United Women boss Casey Stoney has hailed the decision as a 'special moment'

'The international break this month created a gap in this season's relentless programme at the stadium and we all agreed that this was the right time to welcome Casey and her squad to Old Trafford,' she said,

'We would have loved for fans to able to be there to witness this moment, but that time will come.

'For now, our preparations are in full swing as we set the stage to host our match with West Ham United next week.'

March 27 is shaping up to be a big day of women's football in this country as after that encounter, Tottenham host rivals Arsenal in the north London derby at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (3.30pm kick-off).

Watershed moment for Manchester United Women as they play first match at Old Trafford as Casey Stoney's side prepare for 'dress rehearsal' next season with supporters by beating West Ham

* Manchester United Women played their first game at Old Trafford on Saturday
* Captain and lifelong fan Katie Zelem led the team out at the iconic stadium
* Casey Stoney's side eventually wore down West Ham to take home the points
* Stoney wants the team to return to Old Trafford next season - this time with fans

Casey Stoney had done her best not to hype up Manchester United Women's first game at Old Trafford.

'It's a grass pitch, two goals, a football and 11 v 11,' the manager said before kick-off.

Picking up three points was the most important thing on her mind with United chasing Champions League football for next season. But the significance of her side walking out on the famous turf could not be played down.

Manchester United Women had their first game at Old Trafford on Saturday against West Ham

Lifelong Red Devils fan Katie Zelem took to the Theatre of Dreams pitch for the first time. Casey Stoney thought playing in the 74,140-seater stadium would give a boost to her players

Until May 2018, the club did not even have a women's team. Now in their third season as a professional outfit, captain and lifelong fan Katie Zelem can say she was part of history after leading the team out at the Theatre of Dreams against West Ham on Saturday.

United were one of the few top clubs not to have already staged a game at their men's ground, with Stoney insisting they first wanted to sell out their home at Leigh Sports Village.

With that impossible due to matches taking place behind closed doors, Stoney took the opportunity to play at Old Trafford — partly because she had got 'sick of the questions' but also to lift her players.

United went into the game in the wake of a 2-0 defeat by Arsenal last week, a result which meant Champions League qualification was out of their hands.

They had been realistic title contenders until February, before three defeats in four games saw them fall behind champions Chelsea and rivals Manchester City. Injuries to Leah Galton and Tobin Heath, their second and third top scorers, have not helped.

It was evident in the first half that United were low on confidence and they found little joy against West Ham's bank of five defenders. The Hammers prop up the WSL table, but showed resilience here.

Though United dominated possession, they managed just one shot on target — a long-range effort from Lauren James held easily by Courtney Brosnan.

'We weren't good in the first half, that's probably the worst I've seen us play,' said Stoney (right).

'I can't repeat everything I said at half-time but I did say, 'If you want to qualify for the Champions League, you need to play at Champions League standard'.

Teenage wonderkid Lauren James finally broke the deadlock on 49 minutes with a header

'We were sloppy, slow, playing for ourselves not the team and making poor decisions. If there had been a crowd they'd have been disappointed.'

Stoney needed a reaction in the second half and on 49 minutes she got one. A United corner was swung to the back post, where Maria Thorisdottir headed down for James to nod in from two yards out.

James has lost much of this season to injury problems, and she showed just how much her team have missed her on Saturday. United soon doubled their lead through Christen Press, the American latching on to Jackie Groenen's exquisite through-ball to lift over the on-rushing Brosnan.

Mary Earps had to make two fine stops to deny Dagny Brynjarsdottir just past the hour mark, before Lucy Staniforth missed a great chance to make it 3-0.

There was still time for it to get worse for the visitors as Laura Vetterlein was sent off for picking up two yellow cards.

Stoney had described this game as the 'dress rehearsal' for when United can stage a match at Old Trafford in front of supporters, which she hopes will be next season.

Jackie Groenen (facing the camera) then made it 2-0 with a deft lob over Courtney Brosnan

Mary Earps made two fine stops in quick succession as Stoney's side held on to third spot

'The club offered us this one and I took it,' she added.

'I've still not changed my view that I want to consistently get crowds in at Leigh, but to have an exhibition game here where we can do it properly for the fans would be great.'

Man United Women facing an exodus with 'FOUR first-team players ready to follow boss Casey Stoney and Lauren James out the door' after frustrations over the club's facilities

* Casey Stoney quit as Manchester United women's manager last week
* Frustrations over poor training facilities at Carrington was one reason for exit
* Now as many as four United players could reportedly follow Stoney out the door
* American duo Tobin Heath and Christen Press likely to return to United States
* Lauren James has been linked with Chelsea and Jess Sigsworth poised to leave

Manchester United's women's team 'are braced for an exodus of players this summer' in the wake of manager Casey Stoney's departure.

Frustration over poor training facilities at United's Carrington base led Stoney to quit her role as well as a failure to qualify for next season's Champions League.

The women's team made a temporary switch to the men's Aon Training Complex at the start of the year but players were unable to shower between training sessions and meals.

Casey Stoney quit as manager of the Manchester United women's team last week. American pair Tobin Heath (l) and Christen Press (r) are expected to depart in the summer

The gym assigned to the women's team was in a tent and the nearest toilet facilities were a 10-minute walk from their training pitch.

Stoney also felt her team's budget wasn't enough to compete with the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea at the top of the Women's Super League and in other competitions.

United are now faced with the prospect of a player exodus with up to four of their squad reportedly poised to follow Stoney out the door.

The Athletic report that American duo Tobin Heath and Christen Press are expected to return to the United States.

Striker Lauren James has been linked with a transfer to Chelsea, while fellow forward Jess Sigsworth is likely to join Leicester City.

Lauren James (left) has been linked with a move to Chelsea in the summer

Forward Jess Sigsworth will reportedly sign for newly-promoted WSL side Leicester City

Leicester have just been promoted into the WSL and are reportedly set to beat Tottenham to sign Sigsworth.

Stoney's United had requested a move from their usual base at Leigh to Carrington because they kept picking up injuries on what they felt were poor pitches.

However, they are still believed to have been of a better standard to the facilities provided at Carrington.

There is also a frustration at the club's unwillingness to accommodate them at Carrington on a full-time basis.

One source told Sportsmail that a move to Carrington is the 'million-dollar question', but a permanent switch is not anticipated for at least another year, if not longer.

In a statement, United said the pandemic has created unique challenges which have affected the usual training locations and schedules for the women's team at Leigh Sports Village.

They added that the club are working on a package of medium-term investment that will increase and improve facilities with the long-term intention for a full integrated approach to the training ground which includes the men, women and academy teams.

'The nature of the pandemic has created unique challenges over the last year across football and across the club in terms of mandatory protocols around training and games,' their statement read.

'These in turn have affected the usual training locations and schedules for our Women's team at Leigh Sports Village in recent months.

'The club has had to adapt to be as flexible as possible in terms of use of ATC and other arrangements and we recognise this has impacted the Women's team at times.

'We are working on a package of medium-term investment that will increase and improve facilities for the women's team.

'Long term Joel Glazer last week referenced that the club will need to significantly increase investment in Old Trafford and our training complex to ensure that the facilities remain among the best in Europe.

'The long-term intention is be for a fully integrated approach to the training ground that includes men's team, women's team and academy.'

Jane Ross set to follow Casey Stoney out of Manchester United Women exit door... with striker attracting interest from Italy as WSL side try to avoid mass exodus this summer

* Manchester United Women striker Jane Ross is attracting interest from Italy
* A number of stars are thought to share Casey Stoney's discontent with facilities
* It means United are left trying to avoid a mass exodus ahead of the new season
* Ross was signed in 2019 for a newly-promoted United's first season in the WSL

Manchester United's women's striker Jane Ross seems likely to follow manager Casey Stoney out of the door this summer, with a number of Italian clubs thought to be interested.

A number of players are thought to share the discontent about facilities at the club which saw Stoney announce her departure last week.

It means United are left trying to avoid a mass exodus, ahead of the first WSL season to be screened live on the BBC and Sky.

Ross, 31, a Scottish international, was one of a number players signed last summer for a newly-promoted United's first season in the top flight.

Manchester United Women's striker Jane Ross is likely to be the next to leave the club amid interest from Italy. She would follow Casey Stoney (L) in leaving after she signalled her discontent with facilities

This may be her last move after a career which has taken her to both Manchester clubs, West Ham and Sweden.

United will be looking to avoid mass upheaval and have their work cut out keeping young England international Lauren James.

But the prospect of James moving to Chelsea has not advanced, despite her being mistakenly photo-shopped onto a sales pitch for club merchandise last week.

Stoney was so disenchanted with United that a sequence of tweets thanking those who had supported her, earlier this week notably excluded any mention of the club.
