London (AFP) - Faithful lieutenant
Rui Faria will be Jose Mourinho's
assistant manager at Manchester
United a role that club icon Ryan
Giggs had hoped in vain to retain for
the upcoming season.

Faria, who has followed Mourinho
from Barcelona when the 'special
one' was the late Bobby Robson's
interpreter in 1996 to all his
subsequent clubs, is joined by
others who have experience of
working with the United boss.

Coaches Silvino Louro, who has been
with Mourinho for more than a
decade having started out as his
goalkeeping coach, Ricardo
Formosinho and Carlos Lalin -- who
also have previous experience
working with the Portuguese -- and
Emilio Alvarez have all been
confirmed as members of the
coaching staff along with analyst
Giovanni Cerra.

Mourinho, who will be hoping to
make United title contenders again
after losing their way in the past
three seasons under firstly David
Moyes and then Louis van Gaal,
claimed contentiously on Tuesday
Giggs had left the club after 29 years
of service as a player and then
assistant manager because he
wanted his job.

However, it is widely believed it was
only when the 44-year-old Wales
great learnt he would not be assistant
manager that he decided to end his
association with the only club he
ever served.

RUI FARIA'S VERDICT ON WEST HAM DRAW

Manchester United's assistant manager Rui Faria spoke to the media after Sunday's 1-1 draw with West Ham United in the Premier League, following Jose Mourinho's dismissal to the stands.

Here are the main points from Faria's post-match press conference:

MOURINHO'S SENDING OFF

"I have nothing to say about the referee’s decision. I didn't comment with him [Jose, about it] - we just spoke about what the team needed for the second half, any adjustments, and we focused on that really."

LACK OF LEAGUE GOALS AT HOME

"I think everyone saw again, we were the best team on the pitch. We didn’t have any tactical issues during the game. Offensively we have created chances in a comfortable way in the last few matches the people have come to see at the stadium. We are showing that we are a strong side and we create chances that in a normal way should be goals and we should win the game in a comfortable way. Okay it isn’t happening and we are getting frustrated at that but we need to keep at it and it will happen."

CONCEDING THE EARLY OPENER

"We will have time to analyse it and discuss the problem with the goal. When you concede a goal there is always a reason for that and something that went wrong in the defensive set-play. If something went wrong it’s something that we will try to correct. From Arsenal to this it is two completely different goals but we need to watch it back [on video]. We are trying to get the best results."

POGBA'S YELLOW CARD

"I think everyone saw that his frustration showed that it was a free-kick to us but it was a yellow card for Paul and he’s out of the next match. So there is maybe reason to express some frustration but it is also something that happens during the game, the referee’s decision. From our perspective it was a decision that should have been for the opposite side [for us]."

SIZE OF THE TASK AT UNITED

"We knew it was not an easy job and we have had to change a few things and this is what we are going to keep doing. We believe in the players and we believe in the team and what we are changing will arrive for sure. We knew that we had a lot of work in front and it’s what we are doing. It’s a big club, we know that it’s a big club and to be fair we are used to big clubs. We also know how to take a team to win and that is our job and we know that we will do it."

RUI FARIA LEAVING UNITED AT END OF THE SEASON

Rui Faria is to leave Manchester United at the end of the current season.

Rui has worked for the club as assistant manager for the past two years and has worked with Jose Mourinho for over 17 years.

Rui Faria said: “After a lot of consideration, and with a very heavy heart, I have decided the time is right for me to move on.

“I have had 17 years of incredible and unforgettable experiences. However, I have felt for some time that I would like to spend much more quality time with my family before pursuing any new challenge in my professional life.

“My heartfelt thanks go to the manager, Jose Mourinho, for the belief he had in me, all those years ago, when it all was just a student dream. I would like to thank him for the opportunity and confidence, for the knowledge and experience, but most importantly for his friendship.

“I would also like to thank Manchester United and all the clubs where I have had the privilege of working during this period. I would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to all the staff and players who, in different ways, have made an important contribution to my growth as a person and as a professional.

“I wish you all the best for the future, knowing that you will always be my close friends.”

Jose Mourinho said: “17 years… in Leiria, Porto, London, Milan, Madrid, London again and Manchester. Training, playing, travelling, studying, laughing and also a few tears of happiness.

“17 years and the kid is now a man. The intelligent student is now a football expert, ready for a successful career as a manager.

“I will miss my friend and that is the hardest thing for me, but his happiness is more important and, of course, I respect his decision, especially because I know that we will always be together. Be happy, brother!”

Michael Carrick lined up to be Manchester United No 2... but not yet as Jose Mourinho reveals he will not replace Rui Faria next season: 'I'm not going to have an assistant manager'

* Jose Mourinho revealed he will not have an assistant manager next season
* Current assistant Rui Faria is leaving the club to spend more time with family
* The United boss is hoping Michael Carrick can one day fill the No 2 role
* 'I think it will be Michael Carrick... when he has his badges,' Mourinho said

Jose Mourinho is planning for Michael Carrick to be his long-term No 2 at Manchester United but won't name a formal assistant-manager for next season following the departure of Rui Faria.

Carrick, 36, will join Mourinho's coaching staff after saying farewell to Old Trafford in Sunday's 1-0 win against Watford – but the United manager says he'll have to be patient in his new career.

'I'm going to organise my coaching staff next season in a way where the assistant-manager doesn't exist,' said the United manager.

'I'm going to have coaches, assistant coaches, fitness coaches and a structure where they have specialists in different areas connected to performance. And my analysts. I'm not going to have an assistant manager in the sense of the word.

'I think it will be Michael Carrick in the future when he has his badges, his pro licence. People think you can be a player one day, coach the next, but it's not like that. Your brain can feel ready but you need the practice.'

Michael Carrick will join the Manchester United backroom team after ending his playing career. Jose Mourinho revealed he will not replace No 2 Rui Faria (R), who leaves the club this summer

Carrick hugged Mourinho after being substituted to a standing ovation and thanked him in a speech to fans after the final whistle.

'I look forward to learning off him,' said the United captain. 'He is one of the very best. I am sure he will teach me a few things and certain we will have some success.'

Mourinho, who has worked with Faria for 17 years, said Carrick would offer a different viewpoint to other staff because of his long experience as a United player.

'He will have a different vision,' said Mourinho. 'I have to make the decisions but of course my assistants have an opinion and he will participate in every aspect.'

Meanwhile, United have doubts over Romelu Lukaku and Anthony Martial for next Saturday's FA Cup Final against Chelsea.

Martial was at a centre of a riddle when it was claimed he'd driven away from Old Trafford before kick off against Watford but Mourinho dismissed a fall-out.

Mourinho has said that the retiring Carrick is set to be his long-term assistant at Old Trafford. Faria and Mourinho have worked together for 17 years but the assistant is quitting this summer

'He was injured in a Friday training session, a knee problem. He had treatment at the training ground and stayed away. I don't know if he will be fit for the final. I am waiting for the doctor but if it's impossible to play today, I have my doubts.'

Lukaku has missed the last three games with an ankle injury and been doing rehab in Belgium. 'He is back on Tuesday. We will see,' added Mourinho.

Watford manager Javi Gracia believes he'll remain as manager next season. 'I think so. I've spoken to the owner a lot,' he said.

MOURINHO: I WON'T NAME A NEW ASSISTANT

Jose Mourinho will not name an assistant when his right-hand man Rui Faria leaves Manchester United after the Emirates FA Cup final this weekend.

The Reds boss plans to restructure his backroom staff, disband the current make-up of his off-field team and scrap the role of number two.

But he will reinstate the job when he feels Michael Carrick is ready for the position.

On the eve of Carrick’s final match in a United shirt against Watford, the club announced that Mourinho’s second in command Faria will leave at the end of the season. But in the short term, at least, Mourinho is not searching for a replacement for his long-time sidekick.

However, Carrick’s retirement and official move into the coaching team at Old Trafford means a door could open eventually for the 36-year-old.

Speaking after Sunday’s 1-0 win over the Hornets, Mourinho was asked by reporters in his press conference whether he will recruit a new number two or promote someone from within the club.

“[There will be] no number two,” the boss said. “Moving forward, I will organise my coaching staff in a way where the assistant manager figure doesn’t exist.

“I’m going to have coaches, assistant coaches, fitness coaches and a structure where we have specialists in different areas, connected to the performance by analysts. I’m not going to have an assistant manager in the sense of the word.”

But it could only be a temporary departure from the normal management set up.

“The particular reason is that I think it will be Michael Carrick in the future, when he has his badges and his pro licence, when he makes the bridge from a player to an assistant,” added Mourinho.

“People think it’s just like ‘one day I am a player, the next day I am a coach’ and it’s not like that. The brain can be ready for that but then you need the practice, the decision-making, the control, the leadership, the work in groups.”

Faria has been Mourinho’s right-hand man for 17 years from the Reds manager’s early years in Portugal, through to Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and United.

And, until Carrick stakes his claim, Mourinho doesn’t believe there is a suitable candidate to fill his shoes.

“I don’t think it makes sense when Rui is leaving after 17 years. I have nobody in the world of football to be my assistant manager – nobody,” he explained.

“So I prefer to educate people, to structure my staff in a way where there is space for their education, for their improvement, and I think naturally, when Michael has the coaching and pro licence badges, normally, with the personality he has, with the friendship, with our honesty, I think it will be for him.

“At the moment, he is my assistant and he participates in the process. Participating in the process means participating in every aspect.

“Of course I have to make the decisions but my assistants have an opinion and he has. Obviously, he will have a different opinion to those you can get from any other scout, or any analysis department.

“I can call Sir Alex [Ferguson] the intelligent one to buy him and I can call him the happy one to have him for so many years of his career as a phenomenal player.

“I’m not so sad because it’s just the end of his career as a player, but he stays with us and I’m always more connected to the person than the player; people are more important to me than players, so I’m going to have him stay with us, and because of that I’m not so sad.”

The United manager will employ some new faces also for his reconstructed backroom team.

He added: “I am going to improve my staffing in the performance level in relation to the fitness and the relation with the tactical work. So I’m going to bring some people in.”

Michael Carrick earmarked to be Jose Mourinho's assistant at Manchester United following departure of Rui Faria

* Michael Carrick enjoys a perfect send-off in Watford victory
* Carrick played his last Premier League game for Manchester United on Sunday
* The 36-year-old is to retire and join Jose Mourinho's United coaching staff
* Carrick addressed the United supporters after their victory at Old Trafford
* The veteran midfielder expressed his excitement at working under Mourinho

Manchester United will fast-track Michael Carrick's coaching career so he can fill a more prominent role alongside Jose Mourinho following Rui Faria's departure.

Carrick has been earmarked for a place on Mourinho's backroom staff for some time, and the 36-year-old midfielder will formally begin his new job in the FA Cup final against Chelsea this weekend.

However, Faria's decision to leave United after the game at Wembley and end a partnership with Mourinho lasting 17 years has changed the situation.

The United manager has already confirmed that he will not have an assistant to replace Faria next season, choosing instead to restructure his coaching team.

United's highly-rated Under-18s manager Kieran McKenna is expected to be promoted onto the first-team staff, and the club will also look to accelerate Carrick's progress.

Jose Mourinho will welcome Michael Carrick onto his coaching team this week. Carrick is excited to learn from 'one of the best' in Mourinho as he joins his coaching staff

He has been working towards his coaching badges with the Under-14s and Under-15s for the last two years but is still short of his Pro-Licence.

Even so, Mourinho knows that Carrick's experience and popularity as a player will provide a valuable link with the dressing-room after 12 years at Old Trafford.

He retired following his farewell in Sunday's win over Watford and will be on the bench at Wembley.

'It changes overnight,' said Carrick. 'I'm not training this week, I'm going to jump onto the staff.

'It's cut clean and I can move on and focus solely on the other side. I'm more excited about the future then looking back and being sad it's over.

'It all fits in. I obviously know the club and manager, learning off him, the backroom staff, trying to bring the kids through and have an influence on that.

'Hopefully it still fits in a couple of years' time.

'It's going to evolve. It's getting used to the role. Over the next season, you will see what works and how we work best.

'I've obviously done a bit of coaching but it's with the younger age groups.. I've done video work with some of the boys already. It's just getting the balance really.' The former England international has already sought advice from his old United teammates like Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville who moved into coaching after their retirement.

'Briefly, yes, and I will do,' he added. 'I think it is important. It's a no-brainer to try to learn as much as I can. I will certainly be doing that.

'I'll just try to speak to as many people as I can; be a nuisance, be a pest. Just trying to learn all the time from the manager, the coaches and other players.' The thought of going into management in future interests Carrick, but he is not getting ahead of himself as he takes his first steps as a coach.

'The end-game, maybe, if I get into it and I think I'd like to manage, probably at this stage my answer would be yes,' he said.

'But just because I was a half-decent player, it doesn't guarantee you're going to be a success in whatever you do. I'm well aware of that. I'm not getting carried away here.'

'Maybe one day we are playing against each other in the Premier League': Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho tips outgoing assistant Rui Faria to take top-flight managerial job

* Jose Mourinho believes he could face Rui Faria in the Premier League one day
* Faria is primed to leave his role as Mourinho's assistant at Manchester United
* The 42-year-old has worked with Mourinho at several clubs in the past 17 years
* Mourinho claims his long-serving No 2 has all the credentials to be a manager

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho hopes his outgoing assistant Rui Faria will come up against him in opposition in future.

Faria, Mourinho's long-serving No 2, is stepping down from his role at Old Trafford at the end of the season.

Faria has worked alongside Mourinho for the past 17 years, from his early managerial days in Portugal through to his successes with Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and United.

For the time being it seems that Faria, 42, intends to take a break but Mourinho believes he has the credentials to be a manager himself. Indeed, he has even been linked with the upcoming vacancy at Arsenal.

Asked if this felt like the end of an era, Mourinho told MUTV: 'Yes, but maybe one day we are playing against each other in the Premier League.

'If that moment arrives, I will be a very proud guy because this man came to me when he was a kid 17 years ago. So, if that happens, I will be a very proud guy.'

Mourinho and Faria have one more game together as United face Chelsea in the FA Cup final at Wembley next Saturday.

United wrapped up their Premier League campaign on Sunday with a 1-0 win over Watford at Old Trafford.

Marcus Rashford scored the only goal but the main highlight of a largely unremarkable game was the farewell appearance of Michael Carrick.

Veteran midfielder Carrick, 36, is hanging up his boots to take up a position on Mourinho's backroom staff - although that move was planned before news of Faria's departure was announced at the weekend.

Initially Mourinho intends to continue without a designated assistant but he hopes Carrick can grow into that role. He already has no doubt he will be able to call on Carrick's expertise when it comes to identifying new players, particularly in his old midfield role.

Mourinho said: 'I have to make the decisions but of course my assistants have an opinion.

'He has, in relation to his position, a different vision than any other opinion that we can have from any scout or any analyst department.'
