Andy Cole calls for the criticism of 'baby' Mason Greenwood to stop as he insists the Manchester United forward 'is a star in the making IF he gets his head right' amid concerns over his attitude and lifestyle

* Former Man United striker Andy Cole has given his support to Mason Greenwood
* Greenwood has been subject of criticism of late with concerns over his attitude
* Ex-forward Cole has called for the denunciation of 'baby' Greenwood to end
* Greenwood has been spoken to by his club about issues such as time keeping
* He was sent home from England duty with Man City's Phil Foden last month
* The pair were caught sneaking girls into the team hotel in Iceland

Former Manchester United striker Andy Cole has given his support to one of the club's most exciting talents - Mason Greenwood.

Greenwood has been the subject of criticism of late with the Red Devils increasingly concerned over his attitude.

Cole has called for the denunciation of 'baby' Greenwood to stop as he insisted the Manchester United forward can become a 'star'.

'He's a star in the making. If he gets his head right then he's definitely a star in the making. One hundred per cent,' he told The Mirror.

'I'm hoping he will come through this. What's really upset me through this situation is I'm not sure why everyone keeps hounding him the way they do.

'He's a baby. If you don't make mistakes when you're a baby, when do you make your mistakes? In your 50s? He's a boy and he's made mistakes, he's held his hands up, let him go out there and play his football.

'Now judge him on his football because if we're judging him as an 18-year-old boy against what the average 18-year-old gets up to then we'll see what they all get up to [sic].'

Greenwood did not feature in Saturday's 3-1 win at Everton with illness cited as the reason, but as Sportsmail reported on Tuesday, it is understood that his performance in training last Friday was substandard.

United denied speculation on Monday that the teenager was involved in an exchange of words with Bruno Fernandes during the session at Carrington after he failed to chase a pass from his team-mate.

There are also worries at United over Greenwood's lifestyle, specifically the amount of sleep and rest he is getting to stay in the condition needed to perform at the highest level.

Mason Greenwood has been criticised recently with Man United concerned over his attitude. Former United striker Andy Cole has called for the denunciation of 'baby' Greenwood to stop. Cole believes that the 19-year-old forward should be judged on what he does on the pitch

Last month it emerged that the Red Devils had spoken to the 19-year-old over his time-keeping around the club.

Greenwood also found himself in the headlines earlier this season when he was sent home from England duty in disgrace after making his senior debut. The United striker and international team-mate Phil Foden were caught inviting girls to the team hotel in Iceland. United issued a statement saying they were 'disappointed'.

Manchester City midfielder Foden has been recalled for this month's three international matches but Greenwood was omitted following discussions between Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Gareth Southgate.

It is understood that Solskjaer wanted Greenwood, who has only made four starts for his club this season and is yet to complete a full 90 minutes, to train at Carrington instead.

United are said to feel that Greenwood — who also admitted to 'poor judgment' in September after a video emerged of him inhaling nitrous oxide – needs to focus on his development as a footballer.

The teenager played a pivotal role in United's strong finish to last campaign as he scored 19 goals and supplied five assists in a breakthrough season which saw Solskjaer's side finish third in the Premier League and reach the Europa League semi-finals.

Mason Greenwood Dipuji Dua Legenda MU
Afif Farhan - detikSport

London - Mason Greenwood cetak gol dalam kemenangan Manchester United atas West Ham 3-1. Dua legenda Setan Merah memujinya.

Mason Greenwood will play a key part in the second half of Man United's season but must seize the moment as 'it's not just going to happen by itself', insists Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as boss hails striker for being 'more mature' after concerns over his attitude grew

* Mason Greenwood scored an equaliser United's 3-2 FA Cup win over Liverpool
* It was his first goal in 11 appearances since scoring at West Ham in December
* Boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has urged Greenwood to build on his performance
* Solskjaer has also praised the youngster for growing and maturing at United

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has urged Mason Greenwood to kick-start his Manchester United career, and warned the teenage star that he cannot sit back and wait for it to happen.

Greenwood scored United's opening goal and assisted on the second for Marcus Rashford in Sunday's FA Cup win over Liverpool.

It was the 19-year-old's first goal in 11 games since he was on target at West Ham in early December, and one of only four in 23 appearances this term.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer urged Mason Greenwood to build on his performance in their FA Cup win. It was Greenwood's first goal in 11 appearances since scoring at West Ham in early December

Greenwood has gone through a difficult spell in the wake of his breakthrough season at United in which he scored 17 goals in 49 games.

He was expelled from the England squad in September following his senior debut in Iceland for inviting girls into the team hotel, and also censured by United over his attitude.

Solskjaer believes the youngster is maturing and has picked up good habits from veteran striker Edinson Cavani, but still needs to work hard to make sure his progress doesn't stall again.

'We think Mason is going to be very important in the second half of the season, but it's not just going to happen by itself,' said the United boss as his Premier League leaders prepare to face bottom-of-the-table Sheffield United at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

'He scored against West Ham a while back as well and was expected to kick on. He's taken steps, he's grown, he's more mature and he's been training with Edinson Cavani for half a season.

'He's learning good habits, and whoever doesn't learn from players like him, or Bruno (Fernandes) or the players we've brought in, that's a pity.

Greenwood has endured a difficult time following his breakthrough season at Man United. Solskjaer believes Greenwood has 'matured' since being sent home from international duty. He says Greenwood is picking up good habits from veteran striker Edinson Cavani

'I'm very confident that Mason will chip in good performances and with goals and assists.

'We talk about the second season syndrome and if you take your eye off the ball for just a slight second, the Premier League is unforgiving.

'I have always said that 99 per cent effort is 100 per cent failure. Of course, players who ease off in training every single day a little bit - I'm not saying this is Mason, I'm saying it's the case for every single one - it's always a learning curve and a test.

'They know my demands on the standards and habits and physical demands and the running stats. I look at them every game. There is no hiding place and I'm not hiding that fact either.

'It takes a hell of a good player to be able to rest. Maybe once or twice Cristiano Ronaldo was allowed to with us back in the day, but not many more at Man United.'

Greenwood has seen Solskjaer pick Rashford, Paul Pogba, Dan James and Juan Mata ahead of him on the right flank this season, and will soon face even greater competition with new signing Amad Diallo set to make his debut next month.

'That's his preferred position,' added Solskjaer. 'He will get the time to prove that he's the one.

'We have options but I think when you look at the squad and you look at Amad, you think 'yeah that's probably where we'll work to fit you in'.'

The United manager must decide whether to give Greenwood another opportunity on Wednesday and risk Rashford who trained on Tuesday despite picking up a slight knee injury against Liverpool.

Default Re: Mason Will John Greenwood

Mason Greenwood grafted hard against Sheffield United but was hooked by Solskjaer when he needed a goal... the Manchester United starlet remains a work in progress but is yet to hit the heights of his breakthrough season

* Mason Greenwood has failed to kick on since his 17-goal breakthrough season
* United understand the need to nurture his talent but there is a frustration
* He was given a start against Sheffield United and worked hard for the team
* But it was Greenwood's number that came up when Edinson Cavani came on

The most interesting aspect of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s comments about Mason Greenwood before this game was that they were largely unprompted.

Asked a gentle question about Greenwood’s goal and assist in Sunday’s FA Cup win over Liverpool here, it was Solskjaer who chose to mention that progress will not happen on its own and that Greenwood did not kick on as hoped after his previous goal at West Ham in early December.

It was Solskjaer too who raised the issue of ‘second season syndrome’ with only mild encouragement.

There is no doubt that United have great expectations for Greenwood. Equally, it’s clear that the club accept he will need guidance and persuasion, as any teenager in his position would.

For now, he remains the best option on the right side of Solskjaer’s attack among those used there this season although United haven’t spent more than £45million on Amad Diallo and Facundo Pellistri, two teenage right wingers, just to make up the numbers.

United will want to see improvement and so far he has struggled to hit the heights of his 17-goal breakthrough season at Old Trafford.

Sunday was a step in the right direction and earned him a third start in a row against Sheffield United on Thursday night. It is Greenwood’s longest run in the team this season aside from a four-game sequence in December.

Mason Greenwood earned a start against Sheffield United but was replaced for Edinson Cavani. Greenwood has not hit the heights of last season and still has plenty of development to go. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer mentioned 'second season syndrome' when speaking about Greenwood

There was no lack of effort from the 19-year-old who has learned to track back and has made more tackles in the defensive third at the halfway point this term than the whole of last season.

He showed his pace and strength to burst between Phil Jagielka and Ethan Ampadu to reach Bruno Fernandes’s throughball in the 17th minute but ran out space and ideas.

When Fernandes slipped him again through shortly after half-time, for once Greenwood’s finish let him down as he dragged his shot well wide.

There were a few more bright moments, notably in the first half when he engineered the space for a 25-yard shot straight at Aaron Ramsdale.

Greenwood works hard for the team but there's no doubt he remains a work in progress

Greenwood was not afraid to go looking for the ball from his teammates, switching flanks with Marcus Rashford on a couple of occasions.

But when Solskjaer decided to make his first change shortly after Harry Maguire had equalised and he sent on Edinson Cavani, it was Greenwood’s No 11 that went up.

He wasn’t the only United attacker to look a little flat by any means. Greenwood remains a work in progress and, as his manager says, that will require continued effort.

gak bermain full, gak mencetak gol, diganti karena United membutuhkan tambahan gol. Greenwood harus bermain apik setiap diturunkan Ole agar lebih mendapatkan kepercayaan seperti musim lalu

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hails 'different class' Mason Greenwood after his return to form for Manchester United and believes 19-year-old has 'matured immensely' after working alongside Edinson Cavani and Co in training

* Mason Greenwood has returned to top form for Manchester United recently
* After a dry spell over Christmas, he scored a superb goal in win over Liverpool
* Greenwood has followed that up with good displays in the Premier League
* Solskjaer hailed the 19-year-old as 'different class' and much more 'mature'

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has hailed Mason Greenwood's recent return to form, insisting the young striker has 'improved and matured immensely'.

Greenwood burst onto the scene last season, scoring 17 goals in all competitions, but has struggled to live up to expectation this time around.

The 19-year-old failed to find the back of the net in 10 games over December and January but returned to goal-scoring form in the 3-2 FA Cup win over Liverpool last month.

Greenwood was also impressive in the recent Premier League games against Southampton and Everton and Solskjaer has been delighted with what he has seen from him in recent weeks.

'Ah, Mason was different class,' Solskjaer said on the eve of his side's FA Cup fifth round clash with West Ham.

'I thought he was the standout performer on the pitch [against Everton]. He just didn't get the goal that his performance deserved.

'I think the last few games, if you look at him closely – yeah, I know we scored nine against Southampton – but if you look at his performance, I thought his performance was top.'

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has praised 'different class' Mason Greenwood after his return to form. The 19-year-old scored against Liverpool and impressed in his last two Premier League outings

Greenwood has had the added bonus of working with Edinson Cavani on the training ground this season after he arrived in the summer.

Solskjaer believes the Uruguayan's presence is having an impact on Greenwood that is starting to show results on the pitch.

The Norwegian added: 'He's improved and matured immensely, and he's working with some of the top forwards in the country, of course.

'He's learning off them, and it's exciting to see that he's come over his blip and is playing really well.'

After back-to-back impressive performances, Greenwood will be hoping he can continue his rich vein of form against West Ham on Tuesday night and in the Premier League against West Brom on Sunday.

Mason Greenwood signs new FOUR-year contract until 2025 at Manchester United worth £75,000-a-week - as the 19-year-old vows to 'repay club and show everyone just what I am capable of' after rapid rise from academy to Solskjaer's first team

* Mason Greenwood has committed his long-term future to Manchester United
* The academy graduate, who made his debut in 2019, has signed on until 2025
* An improved deal also comes with the option to extend by another 12 months
* The 19-year-old striker has scored 21 goals in 82 appearances for the Red Devils

Mason Greenwood has put pen-to-paper on a new contract at Manchester United worth £75,000-per-week, which will keep him at the club until June 2025.

The 19-year-old, who made his first-team debut in March 2019 under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has already made 82 appearances for the club and has netted 21 times.

The striker has been at the club since the age of seven and having starred during the latter stages of last season in Project Restart, Greenwood has kicked on again this term and been rewarded with a fresh deal.

The 19-year-old has committed a further four years to the club, signing a £75,000-a-week deal

Greenwood, who has signed on for another four years with the option of a further 12 months, said: 'When you join the club at seven years old, you just dream of playing for the first-team one day. I've worked so hard to reach this level and the last two years have been amazing.

'There is so much that I want to achieve in the game and I know that this is the perfect environment to play my football.

'With the support from the manager, his coaching staff and so many great players to learn from; I know that I am developing every single day. There is a lot more to come from myself and this team and I am so committed to working hard week in, week out to help the group achieve success.

'I want to repay the club for the support that everyone has given me over the years and show everyone just what I am capable of.'

Greenwood has scored 21 goals in 82 appearances since making his first-team debut in 2019. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer described Greenwood as a 'fantastic talent' after a new deal was signed

Greenwood is one of nine academy graduates who have appeared in a first-team match day squad this season.

He is also the club's youngest-ever goalscorer in European competition, after scoring against Astana in September 2019 at 17 years, 353 days.

Solskjaer, who gave Greenwood his debut on that famous night in Paris against PSG, added: 'Mason is a fantastic talent and yet another fine example of the type of player that our Academy produces.

'He has made great progress this season, showing real maturity and adaptability to his game, which has seen him develop into one of the best young players in the country.

'Whilst it is easy for people outside of the club to forget that Mason is just 19, it is our job as coaches to ensure he reaches his phenomenal potential and every step we take is to help him along that path.

'Mason is naturally gifted and has a brilliant attitude; we know how important he is going to be for Manchester United over the coming seasons.'

He last scored in the FA Cup fourth round win against Liverpool last month and has netted four times this season.

Mason Greenwood has hailed the 'amazing' impact Edinson Cavani and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer are having on his game at Manchester United.

Solskjaer was a lethal striker in his playing days, scoring 127 goals for United, while veteran Cavani has become the side's primary frontman after an impressive start since joining in October.

Greenwood, 19, is still learning his trade in the game but has impressed for United when given his chance, and the youngster admitted the pair are having a great impact on his development.

'They (Cavani and Solskjaer) were both amazing players and obviously Edi (Cavani) is still playing and is still an amazing player', said Greenwood.

'It’s good to have both of them around in training, as I’ve been watching Edi he’s a top striker, watching his movements, the way he heads the ball, the way he gets into the right positions it’s always a benefit to have a player like that.

'Ole has been my coach it’s good to listen to him and see what he has to say about position and stuff so it’s a positive to have them both there.'

Greenwood, 19, says he watches how Cavani plays in order to progress his own game. Solskjaer backed Greenwood to nail down his best position after impressing in several

The England international already has 82 senior United appearances to his name, scoring 21 goals and registering 10 assists.

He has shown his to play in several different positions in the forward areas and, while Solskjaer praised Greenwood's versatility, the United manager backed him to nail down his best position in the coming years.

'Mason was a bit shy there because he can play No 10 as well as a shadow striker. He can play right, centre forward, 10 and at a stretch maybe on the left. We just have to give him time to find his final position,' Solskjaer added.

'He’s a forward who moves really well along the line at the moment at his age and at his development physically sometimes you don’t want to be right up in the mix and in the middle with the big brutal centre backs next to you so I think we’ve found that he can play both really.

'That will be in the next year or two if he’s going to be a No 9 or a forward or as I said as a shadow striker, in and around the goal definitely, we need him there even though his link up play and general play has improved a lot.'

Paul Scholes insists 'future superstar' Mason Greenwood is Man United's 'best finisher' ahead of Marcus Rashford and would be a better No 9 than him despite scoring 13 FEWER goals this season

* Mason Greenwood has scored just four times in 30 matches this season
* He has mainly been used from a wide-right position by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
* Greenwood admitted he eventually wants the main striker role at United
* Paul Scholes said he'd be a better No 9 than Rashford because he's more clinical

Paul Scholes has insisted that Mason Greenwood is Manchester United's best finisher ahead of Marcus Rashford and should be given the main striker role.

The 19-year-old has endured a difficult time in front of goal this season and has scored just four times in 30 appearances in all competitions, primarily operating from the right wing.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer started Greenwood as his central forward on Thursday night as United thumped Real Sociedad 4-0, thanks to goals from Bruno Fernandes, Rashford and Daniel James.

Paul Scholes insisted Mason Greenwood (left) would be a better No 9 than Marcus Rashford. Ex-Man United star Paul Scholes believes that Greenwood is the best finisher at the club

Greenwood, who has scored 21 times in 83 matches since his first-team debut for United back in 2019, admitted he eventually wants the striker role for himself, which has mainly been occupied by Edinson Cavani this season.

Speaking after the victory in Italy, Greenwood said: 'I'm happy to play on the right, I'm happy to play up front, I'm not really sure.

'But I always wanted to be a striker when I was younger. I've also been a winger in the youth team and in the academy, I've been between both of them.

'I do want to play centre forward eventually but I'm always happy on the right and it's a good position to work from.'

Former United star Scholes believes Greenwood is a good fit to play as the club's No 9 despite scoring 13 fewer than Rashford this season.

Greenwood has mainly been used from the right this term but started centrally on Thursday. Greenwood has had a difficult season but Scholes believes he is a superstar in the making. Greenwood admitted he eventually wants the striker role, which Edinson Cavani has primarily held this season

'It's between Rashford and Greenwood who plays in that centre forward role,' Scholes added.

'I think the club and everybody thinks Greenwood is the best finisher at the club so therefore he would be better as the No9.

'The only problem is when Rashford's played on the right he hasn't really found his best form so they could switch round quite a bit.

'Give Greenwood chances he will score. He is destined to be a superstar. He's got to keep his feet on the ground, keep working hard and there's nothing to stop him.'

Rio Ferdinand singles out Mason Greenwood for inspiring Man United's comeback against Brighton and says his goal-shy season is down to his team-mates FAILING to pick out his clever runs

* Rio Ferdinand praised Mason Greenwood for Manchester United's comeback
* Greenwood, 19, scored a late winner to secure three vital points against Brighton
* Ferdinand said Greenwood would have scored more goals with better service
* Greenwood said the goal was a 'confidence booster' after not scoring many

Rio Ferdinand has heaped the plaudits on Manchester United starlet Mason Greenwood, saying he would score more goals if his team-mates could pick out his runs.

The 19-year-old forward scored a late winner for the Red Devils to complete a 2-1 comeback victory over Brighton on Sunday.

But Ferdinand was more impressed with Greenwood's performance throughout the match, saying he displayed all the natural talent of a top goal-scorer.

Rio Ferdinand praised Mason Greenwood for inspiring Manchester United's win over Brighton. Greenwood (left) scored an 89th-minute header to give Man United a 2-1 victory on Sunday

'This kid's a striker, that movement there is striker's instinct,' Ferdinand said on BT Sport.

'I was pleased today that it wasn't about the goal, it was about his all-round game.

'For someone so young to be doing that (his all-round play) despite not being in a rich vein of form, that shows a lot about the kid's attitude.'

Ferdinand claimed that Greenwood would have more goals to his name if more Man United players were better at seeing his clever runs.

'He hasn't had the luck in front of goal this season,' he said. 'I'm sure Ole (Gunnar Solskjaer) and his staff will look at the fact he's making unbelievable runs but he's not getting picked-out at the moment but that will come.

Ferdinand said Greenwood is 'making the runs' but United players aren't picking them out. Greenwood said the goal was a 'confidence booster' as he has not scored many league goals

'People will be telling them this kid's making the runs. You've got to pick him out if you want to get results.'

Greenwood's return has been meagre this season, with just two goals in 24 Premier League games and he made no secret of his joy at adding to his tally against Brighton.

'It's a confidence booster,' he told BT Sport of the goal after the match.

'I know I've not scored so many in the Premier League and I've scored a header tonight which is something I've been working on for a long time.

'It was a hard night. When they scored first we knew we had to react. The second-half was excellent, everyone was focused and switched-on.'

Fellow pundit Steve Sidwell even went as far as to say there is 'no secret' that Greenwood is 'the best finisher at the club, ahead of (Edinson) Cavani and (Marcus) Rashford.'

The win sees United increase the gap from Leicester in third to four points, with eight Premier League games left.
