Menurutku dia nggak begitu cocok jadi LB.

Manchester United starlet Timothy Fosu-Mensah determined to seize opportunity after delight at debut against Arsenal

* Man United beat title-chasing Arsenal 3-2 in Premier League on Sunday
* The 18-year-old Timothy Fosu-Mensah made his debut
* Dutchman was the 14th handed first outing by Louis van Gaal this season
* Fosu-Mensah admitted he was a little 'overwhelmed' by the experience

Timothy Fosu-Mensah is determined to kick on after becoming the latest Manchester United youngster thrown in at the deep end.

This has been a topsy-turvy season at Old Trafford, where mounting injury problems have led Louis van Gaal to call upon on the club's academy products.

Fosu-Mensah and James Weir swelled the number of players handed a United debut this season to remarkable 14, with the pair coming off the bench to help secure a 3-2 win against Arsenal on Sunday.

The 18-year-old replaced Marcos Rojo at Old Trafford, becoming the latest to be handed a debut

It was an occasion to savour and one which has whetted Fosu-Mensah's appetite, with the versatile 18-year-old defender looking to build on his maiden appearance.

'I'm very happy - I just feel overwhelmed at the moment,' he told the club's official website. 'It was a big day for me but I have to keep working hard.

'It was really surreal. The players around me really helped but the most important thing is that the team played well and we did - we worked hard together.

'Arsenal are a big team, so we're delighted to win. It was a great performance.'

Fosu-Mensah and Weir were amongst five United debutants over the last week alone, with Joe Riley's appearance in the FA Cup defeat of Shrewsbury followed by Regan Poole and Marcus Rashford featuring against Midtjylland.

It is no doubt who has made the biggest impact, though, with 18-year-old Rashford scoring an important Europa League brace and then another double to down Arsenal.

'I'm so happy for him,' Fosu-Mensah said of Rashford.

'He's a very good friend of mine and it makes me happy every time he scores. Everyone works really hard at this club.

'It's great that young players are getting a chance - everyone knows the opportunities are there, so we're all working hard to take them.'

Fosu-Mensah earns praise from van Gaal

Tim Fosu-Mensah's versatility has impressed Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal.

The youngster, who only turned 18 at the start of this year, came off the bench to make his senior debut in the Barclays Premier League win over Arsenal as a second-half replacement for Marcos Rojo.

A centre-back in his Ajax days, Fosu-Mensah has appeared in a variety of positions for Warren Joyce's Under-21 side and operated in both full-back slots recently.

"I think I have already tried him as a right full-back in the second team," van Gaal told MUTV. "Through the circumstances, I have to do that because he is very fast and very fast with the ball.

"He can dribble, he can cross, but he can also play in the centre-half position or in midfield. He's a multi-functional player. But it is not easy to play in the first team when you are so young because the play is so quick, especially against Arsenal, because they are also moving the ball quickly. So it was a good debut for him."

Sunday represented a first appearance in the senior matchday squad for the teenager, and he did not feature in the Under-21s' win against Middlesbrough on Monday ahead of Wednesday's first-team encounter with Watford at Old Trafford.

Dapat credit dari van Gaal atas performanya lawan Watford.

Van Gaal: Fosu-Mensah saved us

Louis van Gaal reserved special praise for young defender Tim Fosu-Mensah following Manchester United's victory over Watford on Wednesday night.

The defender made his first start for the club after coming off the bench against Arsenal at the weekend to make his debut. Van Gaal opted to field the teenager alongside compatriot Daley Blind at the heart of the defence with Marcos Rojo at left-back.

Fosu-Mensah did not look out of place and, despite picking up a first-half booking, helped keep the visitors at bay with a series of vital last-ditch challenges.

The 18-year-old dealt admirably with the direct approach of Watford's much-respected strike pairing of Troy Deeney and Odion Ighalo through the middle, as United recorded a first clean sheet in the league for a month.

With Fosu-Mensah handed his chance due to Michael Carrick being rested, van Gaal singled out his contribution in his post-match press conference.
"Timothy has saved us three times, I think, because of his speed," explained the manager.

"So I was very pleased that he was on the pitch. He wanted to be changed early in the second half [because he picked up a knock] but I let him stay on because he always closed the door for us.

"I think the youngsters have given us a lot of spirit and now, when you see the dressing room full of joy with all the players laughing, it’s beautiful to see."

Timothy Fosu-Mensah wants Louis van Gaal to stay at Manchester United due to Dutch manager's faith in club's young players

  • Louis van Gaal has given 14 academy players debuts during his reign
  • However, Van Gaal is likely to leave Old Trafford after two years in charge
  • Timothy Fosu-Mensah thinks Van Gaal's faith in youngsters is 'special'
  • Reports in Spain say that Jose Mourinho has agreed a deal with the club
  • Manchester United will pay Mourinho £5million if they don't take up option

Manchester United youngster Timothy Fosu-Mensah has backed ‘special’ manager Louis van Gaal to stay beyond the end of the season after giving the kids a chance.

Van Gaal is expected to leave Old Trafford this summer after two ordinary years in charge, with former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho his likely replacement.

But Fosu-Mensah, 18, has given an indication of a swell of support from United’s young players for a manager who has handed debuts to 14 academy starlets.

Quote:
THE ACADEMY PLAYERS GIVEN DEBUTS UNDER LOUIS VAN GAAL
Jesse Lingard, Tyler Blackett, Saidy Janko, Reece James, Andreas Pereira, Paddy McNair, Tom Thorpe, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, Donald Love, Joe Riley, Marcus Rashford, Regan Poole, Timothy Fosu-Mensah and James Weir
Mourinho, conversely, was criticised for his youth record at Stamford Bridge after the likes of Ruben Loftus-Cheek struggled to break through earlier this season before the manager was sacked.

‘They find this very special in England,’ Fosu-Mensah told Dutch paper De Telegraaf of Van Gaal’s faith in youngsters.

‘At the top clubs, the young boys do not quickly get a chance but Van Gaal has proved the contrary. He keeps his eye always on young boys and it is definitely important to me.

‘Van Gaal is really a man with personality. I still think it's great that I was able to make my debut under him. Do I hope he stays? Of course.’

Versatile Dutch star Fosu-Mensah was a late substitute in United’s 1-0 win at local rivals Manchester City on Sunday in what was his fourth senior appearance.

Van Gaal’s promotion of youth has been one of the highlights of an up-and-down season which leaves United sixth in the Barclays Premier League, but just a point behind fourth-placed City.

The pre-contract was reported not to be a final agreement, but to effectively reserve Mourinho for United if they wished to take up the option - with a £5million compensation clause for the out-of-work boss if the club turned their back.

Fosu-Mensah was signed from Ajax in 2014 and has been a regular in United’s youth sides before making the step up to first-team action.

FOSU-MENSAH THANKS HIS UNITED COLLEAGUES

Tim Fosu-Mensah has thanked his Manchester United colleagues for helping him make a smooth start to life in the first team.

The 18-year-old was thrust into the spotlight when coming off the bench during the entertaining 3-2 win against Arsenal due to an injury to Marcos Rojo. The Netherlands Under-19 international also appeared as a substitute in the derby victory over Manchester City to register his fourth appearance for Louis van Gaal's side.

After receiving positive feedback for his contribution, the versatile defender was clearly delighted to handle the big occasion against the Gunners with such maturity.

"I was overwhelmed, very overwhelmed when I came on," he told ManUtd.com in an exclusive interview. "When I was sat on the bench, I was more nervous than when I had to play football itself for the first time. Thankfully, the players around me helped me very much. Michael Carrick, Daley Blind and Guillermo Varela really helped me to play well and do what I had to do.

"After the game, Carrick came up to me plus Memphis and Blind. The manager also came to me and congratulated me. Ryan Giggs as well. Everyone told me I’d done well and it was very pleasing for me."

A few days later, Fosu-Mensah was handed his full debut and played the whole 90 minutes at centre-half against Watford in a 1-0 victory.

"It was my first start but I think, as I’ve said, the players around me helped me out," he added. "For a young boy of 18 to be put in the team for such a big game shows confidence from the manager in me. So I wanted to pay that back with a good performance.

"Obviously, I will keep working hard. As a young player, you have to do that and keep listening to all the advice from the manager and coaches, especially if you want to play more games. And when the chance comes, you have to play well and make the most of it. I’m happy but, as I’ve said, I think I have to keep my head down and keeping working on my game."

Manchester United defender Fosu-Mensah reveals how teammates helped him vs Arsenal

Timothy Fosu-Mensah had a Man Utd debut to remember and was grateful for the support from three teammates.

Fosu-Mensah impressed at left-back against Arsenal

Timothy Fosu-Mensah has revealed three of his teammates helped him cope with nerves on his Manchester United debut against Arsenal last month.

The 18-year-old Dutchman was a second-half substitute for Marcos Rojo and slotted in at left-back as a depleted United defence attempted to hold on to their lead.

Captain Michael Carrick , starting at centre-back, Daley Blind and Guillermo Varela joined Fosu-Mensah in the makeshift back four but their support for the teenager was invaluable as United won 3-2.

"I was overwhelmed, very overwhelmed when I came on," Fosu-Mensah told the United website.

"When I was sat on the bench, I was more nervous than when I had to play football itself for the first time.

"Thankfully, the players around me helped me very much.

Fosu-Mensah impressed again when he made his full debut against Watford three days later, where his teammates' help aided his performance.

"It was my first start but I think, as I’ve said, the players around me helped me out," he added.

"For a young boy of 18 to be put in the team for such a big game shows confidence from the manager in me. So I wanted to pay that back with a good performance."
