Manchester United women to face Liverpool in inaugural match

Manchester United women’s first game following their inception earlier this year will be against Liverpool as the fixture list for the new season was unveiled on Wednesday.

United face their Merseyside rivals in Group Two North of the Continental League Cup on 19 August. That game will feature the battle of the two new managers as United’s Casey Stoney takes on Neil Redfearn, former Leeds and Rotherham manager who took charge of the Reds in June. United’s first match in the Women’s Championship will be against Aston Villa on 8 September.

Meanwhile, Chelsea begin the defence of their Women’s Super League title with a home game against Manchester City. Emma Hayes’s team, who won the league for the second time in 2017-18, will host last season’s runners-up at Kingsmeadow on 9 September.

Liverpool begin their Super League campaign with a trip to Arsenal, while in other opening weekend games Birmingham host Everton, Brighton take on Bristol City and Reading welcome Yeovil.

MATCH REPORT: LIVERPOOL WOMEN 0 UNITED WOMEN 1

FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup | Prenton Park | Scorer: Arnot (83)

A fiercely competitive first match for Manchester United Women against local rivals Liverpool saw the Reds seal a historic victory in the FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup clash at Prenton Park, thanks to a late Lizzie Arnot goal.

The knockout cup competition, comprising of four groups of five or six clubs split geographically, saw United - who will play in the FA Women’s Championship this season - take on Neil Redfearn’s FA Women’s Super League outfit.

An end-to-end match, which had plenty of opportunities for both sides, culminated in a memorable victory for the Reds thanks to Arnot's 83rd-minute winner. Alex Greenwood, a constant threat down the left, put a cross on a plate for someone to tap in, and Arnot duly obliged.

Casey Stoney’s side dominated the first 20 minutes with early chances falling for former Hibernian winger Arnot and Jess Sigsworth, but both efforts went just wide.

Siobhan Chamberlain was rarely troubled in the first half despite Liverpool’s high pressing. Calm under pressure, United’s defensive unit played out from the back whenever possible.

Set-pieces looked as though they may prove pivotal; Katie Zelem and Greenwood the providers from free-kicks and corners as United pushed for the opener. Amy Turner failed to get a toe on Zelem’s tempting free-kick and Sigsworth, unmarked in the box, headed just wide from Greenwood’s corner.

England full-back Greenwood then stung the palms of Liverpool goalkeeper Preuss with an excellent free-kick, before Arnot played in Sigsworth. Last season’s FA WSL 2 top scorer saw her low drive again saved by Preuss, as the sides went in level at half-time.

Liverpool grew into the game after the break, though; Courtney Sweetman-Kirk, on at half-time, came quickly into the action, trying her luck from range but her shot sailed just over the bar.

Leah Galton, returning to England having played in the US and in Germany with Bayern Munich, replaced Hanson just before the hour mark and could have scored United’s first goal. One-on-one after good work from Sigsworth on the edge of the area, the ball fell kindly for the 24-year-old, but Preuss again came out on top.

Shortly after, it was Chamberlain’s turn to impress one-on-one; the former Liverpool goalkeeper making an excellent low save to her left from Sweetman-Kirk’s effort.

Arnot’s winner came after a sustained period of Liverpool pressure and the home side nearly responded immediately. Christie Murray’s low freekick beat Chamberlain but rattled the post, skimmed along the line and away.

United held on for a historic victory, and manager Stoney was delighted with the character shown by the team: “I’m really pleased with the three points but at the same time we know we can play better.

“These girls have put an absolute shift in for six weeks after being thrown together. To go out there and dig deep, to show a bit of character was really pleasing.

“When it was backs against the wall, we stayed calm. We created some really good opportunities, we just need to finish them.

“It was a great ball in from Alex and when you get numbers in the box you’ll get goals.”

United Women: Chamberlain; Smith, A. Turner, M. Turner, Greenwood; Green (Toone 45), Zelem, James (Devlin 89); Arnot, Sigsworth, Hanson (Galton 59).

Liverpool Women 0-1 Manchester United Women: Lizzie Arnot scores late winner as Red Devils return to women's football after 13-year exile

* Manchester United fielded a women's side for the first time in 13 years
* United's first opponents back in the professional game was against Liverpool
* Lizzie Arnot scored the winning goal in the Continental Tyres League Cup
* United manager Casey Stoney wants this to be the start of something special

Manchester United are used to making history. But setting up a women's side for the first time in 13 years was one of the more significant steps made by a football club that has enjoyed rich success on the pitch.

It was fitting that their opponents in the Continental Tyres League Cup on Sunday were old rivals Liverpool. It was also fitting that United would leave it late to win the tie - just like Sir Alex Ferguson's sides have managed several times before.

The goal was one Ferguson would also have been proud of. A tidy passing move finished off when Lizzie Arnot converted from captain Alex Greenwood's cross in the 84th minute.

Arnot scored in the 82nd minute to notch United first win as a women's team for 13 years

It was always going to be a tough ask for Casey Stoney's side, who have been entered into the second tier of women's football.

Liverpool, managed by former Barnsley player Neil Redfearn, finished sixth in the Women's Super League last season.

Stoney said before the game at Prenton Park that she wanted her players 'to go out there and prove that they've made the correct decision to come to Manchester United'.

Casey Stoney will have been pleased with her side's first performance as a professional team

Her words got the desired response. They were strong and effective at stopping Liverpool's attack and were efficient at creating their own.

Arnot was a livewire from the start of the game. She broke forward early in the game and tried a shot from outside the area which gave Liverpool goalkeeper Anke Preuss a taste of what was to come.

Liverpool's defence were caught cold from Katie Zelem's free-kick from deep but Amy Turner wasn't able to get her shot on target.

Liverpool struggled to create anything of real note until half an hour into the game when a mad scramble for the ball ensued in the United area. Liverpool weren't able to take advantage.

Leah Galton is put under pressure by Liverpool Women's Leandra Little in the second half

Both sides started the second half sluggishly. United goalkeeper Siobhan Chamberlain had to be alert when Courtney Sweetman-Kirk was picked out at the back post from a corner. Chamberlain saved well as the ball came in at the second attempt.

Stoney's instructions to attack a vulnerable Liverpool defence with even more aggression were being listened to.

Leah Galton and Jess Sigsworth both getting into good positions but were unable to trouble Preuss.

United wanted a penalty when Lauren James' shot was blocked by the hand of Leighanne Robe. The appeals were waved away.

But United would go ahead eight minutes from time. Arnot finishing neatly after Greenwood's clever run to the byline.

Liverpool came close to equalising at the death when Christie Murray stepped up for a free-kick. Murray's effort, however, hit the post and bounced away.

Default Re: Manchester United Women's Team

Manchester United Women's historic first home game as a professional team ended in defeat but only after a positive display against experienced opponents Reading.

The top-flight team were made to work hard by Casey Stoney's fledgling side before second-half goals from Brooke Chaplen and Gemma Davison, either side of a red card for Royals defender Molly Bartrip, earned the visitors a second Group Two North win in the Continental Tyres League Cup.

Both teams were unchanged, as United's head coach Casey Stoney and her opposite number Kelly Chambers understandably kept faith with the line-ups that saw off Liverpool 1-0 and Durham 4-1 respectively in the opening games of this competition.

The Reds fashioned the first notable chance in the ninth minute, when Mollie Green found Katie Zelem in central midfield and United's no.10 played a precise left-footed pass into the area. Jess Sigsworth was swiftly on to it behind the Reading backline but although the assistant's flag stayed down, her first-time finish was just a fraction wide of the right-hand post.

Reading's main threat, Fara Williams, took another 10 minutes to test Siobhan Chamberlain, with her shot from just outside the area requiring United's experienced goalkeeper to dive low to the left and make the best save of the first half.

Reds captain Alex Greenwood forced the Royals to defend again when her stirring run down the left eventually led to Lizzie Arnot, last Sunday's scorer against Liverpool, turning creator with a cross from the right that Sigsworth headed straight at Grace Maloney.

At the other end, Kirsty Hanson had the unwanted distinction of hitting the woodwork twice for United in a matter of seconds, after Greenwood whipped in a wondrous left-wing cross from Zelem's short corner. Firstly, Hanson headed against the angle of post and bar and when the ball dropped to her for a second time, the Scot lofted a shot onto the crossbar.

It was Hanson's attempt to surge forward on the left flank that brought the first booking of the game, with referee Anthony Tankard punishing Reading defender Molly Bartrip after she combined with Kirsty Pearce to bring down United's lively no.18.

The Reds' Amy Turner was the next player to be shown a yellow card, for kicking the ball away after fouling Reading's no.9, Gemma Davison, early in the second half.

That was perhaps a symptom of the step-up from the visitors, with left-back Natasha Harding then firing in a warning shot that Chamberlain did well to beat away at her near post.

The increasing pressure then paid off for the Royals when Brooke Chaplen used her strength on the ball to set up Davison for another effort saved by the United goalkeeper, before burying the rebound herself to make it 1-0.

A spate of cautions ensued in a scruffy period of play following the goal, with United's Lauren James and Reading's Lauren Bruton both seeing yellow in separate incidents.

Bartrip's second booking, for scything down Hanson when the Royals strived to clear their lines from Greenwood's free-kick, reduced her side to 10 players. Her captain Pearce, who might have been booked instead of Bartrip in the first half, was then cautioned for dissent.

Sensing an opportunity for their side to get back on level terms, the home fans sitting in the healthy crowd at Leigh found their voices and tried to inspire Stoney's side.

A sublime piece of skill from Zelem had some of the 4,835 supporters off their seats when she turned brilliantly between two opponents and left Williams floundering on the floor, although her resulting shot was only curled into Maloney's comfortable grasp.

United continued to chase an equaliser and seek openings for central striker Sigsworth, with Greenwood and substitute Leah Galton both stretching the Royals with runs and crosses from the left.

However, Maloney kept her clean sheet intact and when the Reds bravely threw every player forward for a final corner deep into injury time, the ball broke for Davison to run into the United half and eventually slot in a killer second goal against the run of play.

It was a disappointing end to the contest for United but Stoney and her squad can still go into the international break with pride and plenty to build on after just seven weeks of working together.

United Women: Chamberlain; Smith, A. Turner, M. Turner, Greenwood; Green (Palmer 61), Zelem, James, Arnot (Toone 83), Sigsworth, Hanson (Galton 67). Substitutes not used: Bentley, Harris, Devlin, Roberts.

Attendance: 4,835.

After playing against Aston Villa away on Sunday 9 September, Manchester United Women’s next home match is against Sheffield United in the league on Thursday 20 September, kick-off 19:00 BST.

Default Re: Manchester United Women's Team

Manchester United Women began the WSL Championship campaign in devastating fashion, by hitting Aston Villa Ladies for twelve in front of a packed crowd at the Trevor Brown Memorial Ground.

Jess Sigsworth scored five goals, with braces for Lauren James and Kirsty Hanson, while Katie Zelem, Mollie Green and Ella Toone added to the score-line as the Reds ran riot in the West Midlands.

United took the lead inside ten minutes when sixteen-year-old James’ effort from inside the box was deflected past the helpless Villa goalkeeper Sian Rogers.

The Villans had a chance to equalise soon after. Aoife Hurley had a crack at goal from outside the area, however the ball didn’t have the pace to trouble United shot-stopper, Siobhan Chamberlain.

The Reds’ quality soon shone through and they scored three goals in the space of five minutes, midway through the first half. James added a second to her tally as she unleashed a clean effort from outside the area, which was quickly followed by Sigsworth’s first goal in United colours.

The referee awarded a penalty to United three minutes later after Martha Harris was brought down inside the area. Zelem made no mistake from the spot and United looked to be home and dry.

Sigsworth completed her hat-trick before half-time. The forward weaved her way through the Villa defence and rocketed a shot into the top-left corner to score her second, before coolly slotting home from close range after a good work from Hanson.

United scored a seventh goal of the game soon after the break when half-time substitute Mollie Green delivered a brilliantly-weighted ball across the area for Sigsworth to tap into the net.

The Reds – wearing the new adidas pink kit - weren’t finished there! Hanson, who had been causing Villa problems throughout the game down the right, got in on the act with a second-half brace: the midfielder rounded the goalkeeper to score the Reds’ eighth and then caught Rogers out at the near post to add a ninth.

Chamberlain had very little to do in the United goal but she had to be on hand to deal with Jodie Hutton’s left-footed shot, which was lashed at the Reds’ goalkeeper. That was as good as Villa could muster in the second half.

With just over an hour played, Sigsworth scored her fifth and the Reds’ 10th goal as the striker compounded the hosts’ misery with a confident finish.

Green hammered home a half-volleyed shot five minutes later to make it 11-0, as the midfielder was given plenty of time to take a touch and place the ball into the net. Ella Toone, another substitute, scored the twelfth after Hanson’s shot was initially saved onto the post by Rogers.

The Villa goalkeeper was on hand to prevent United further adding to their advantage before full-time. Green was through on goal and looked certain to score her second of the game, but Rogers made herself big and parried the effort away.

Stoney’s side saw out the final ten minutes and will hope to carry this confidence into the next game, which will be at home against Sheffield United.

MATCH REPORT: UNITED WOMEN 3 SHEFFIELD UNITED 0

Manchester United regained top position in the FA Women's Championship with a comfortable victory against Sheffield United at Leigh Sports Village on Thursday night.

Katie Zelem opened the scoring from the spot after 12 minutes when Lauren James was brought down inside the area. Just before the break, United doubled the advantage as Kirsty Hanson curled in a right-footed shot over Blades goalkeeper Nicola Hobbs.

Reds substitute Lizzie Arnot ensured the points were safe midway through the second half, when slotting home from close range after some strong work by Hanson.

Following the recent 12-0 away trouncing of Aston Villa, expectations were high as Stoney’s side arrived at Leigh Sports Village for United’s first home league match of the campaign and the hosts did indeed start brightly.

Alex Greenwood, who was recalled to the starting XI, nearly scored the opener inside five minutes after a fantastic run through the Sheffield United midfield and defence. Unfortunately for the Reds' skipper, the attempt failed to find the target.

Five minutes later though, United were in front after James was fouled inside the area by Blades defender Ellie Fletcher. Zelem, who scored from the spot against Aston Villa, made no mistakes to put the Reds ahead with a composed finish.

This early setback did not deter the visitors and they continued to apply pressure as a run from Ellie Gilliatt forced Millie Turner into action to clear the danger. United also had chances to double the lead. James’ incisive through ball looked set to find Jess Sigsworth, but it was intercepted before it could reach the in-form forward who scored five against Villa.

Sigsworth then turned provider and laid the ball off to Hanson whose effort from outside the area smashed against the woodwork. The opening goalscorer, Zelem, then had a chance to complete a brace from close range, only for her shot to go straight at the grateful Hobbs.

Sheffield United had a golden opportunity to grab an equaliser when Chloe Dixon found herself through on goal, but she was prevented from troubling Siobhan Chamberlain in the Reds' net after a great recovery by Amy Turner. United's shot stopper was then forced to make a save, however, when Danielle Cox tried to convert the resulting corner from close range.

Just as the Blades were growing in confidence, the Reds put daylight between the teams. With minutes to go before half-time, Hanson unleashed a curling right-footed effort from outside the box which looped over the head of Hobbs and gave Stoney’s side some breathing space going into the break.

The Reds were out of sight midway through the second half when Hanson muscled her way into the box from the right-hand side and her square ball across the face of goal fell to substitute Arnot, who was on hand to slot the ball into the net and seal all three points for her side.

Lauren James, who scored a cracker against Aston Villa, had a chance to make it 4-0, but the teenager’s effort from outside the box was off target on this occasion. With five minutes to go, the hosts hit the bar again as Aimee Palmer’s powerful effort from distance nearly found its way into the goal.

There was one moment of concern for the league leaders in the latter stages as Hanson was forced off with five minutes to go and the maximum number of substitutes already used, leaving the Reds to finish the game with ten players on the pitch.

That aside, this was still a great evening's work for the Reds, giving the squad plenty of confidence going into this Sunday’s away fixture against London Bees at the Hive Stadium.

United Women: Chamberlain; Harris, A. Turner, M. Turner, Greenwood (c); Zelem, Green (Palmer 45), James; Hanson, Toone (Arnot 45), Sigsworth (Devlin 64).

Substitutes not used: Bentley, Hartley, Devlin, Smith.

Congrats, Girls !

MATCH REPORT: LONDON BEES 0 UNITED WOMEN 5

Manchester United remain top of the FA Women’s Championship table after a brace from Mollie Green plus goals from Lauren James, Millie Turner and Ella Toone ensured a third consecutive victory, on a sunny afternoon at The Hive Stadium against London Bees.

Green opened the scoring after 17 minutes, following James’ low delivery into the box. After providing for her team-mate, James got in on the act before the half-hour mark after cutting inside and coolly finishing from close range. Millie Turner ensured the points were safe just before the break, while a second-half brace from Green and a goal from Ella Toone completed a five-star performance on the road.

After beating Sheffield United 3-0 at home on Thursday night, Casey Stoney made three changes as Kirsty Smith, Lizzie Arnot and Aimee Palmer came into the starting XI to replace Martha Harris, Ella Toone and Jess Sigsworth.

The Reds, donning the pink adidas away kit, started the brighter of the two teams. Smith marauded her way into the penalty box and found Green, whose looping effort at goal unfortunately failed to find the target.

Seventeen minutes into the game though, United took the lead. James delivered a delightful low cross into the box from the left-hand-side and Green was on hand to poke the ball home for her second goal of the season.

James continued to torment the Bees’ defence and just before the half-hour mark, the provider for the first goal became the scorer for the Reds’ second. The 16-year-old had time to cut inside in the penalty area and fire in a shot at the near post to double United’s advantage.

Moments later, Greenwood, who had made a surging run forward, crossed the ball but Hanson's downward header struck the post and prevented her from adding to her goal tally.

The visitors had to be wary of the threat from Bees midfielder Destiney Toussaint, whose direct runs down the right wing caused moments of concern for United’s defence. However, her impact on the game was cut short as she was stretchered off just before half-time.

After the break in play, United did indeed make it 3-0 and it was a first goal for the club by Turner. A cross into the box forced a goalmouth scramble and the defender’s diving header found its way into the net, putting Stoney’s side in total control going into the interval.

Despite United having a vice-like grip on the game, the players continued to push for a fourth goal and Green was the one to score it. Ten minutes into the second half, after another fine cross from the right, the midfielder was in acres of space to put the ball through Sarah Quantrill’s legs in the Bees’ goal and score her second of the game.

Both sides had their chances to score afterwards. Katie Zelem had to head a Bees shot off the line and she had a chance of her own in front of goal, but the shot went straight into the hands of Quantrill.

With 15 minutes to play, substitute Toone was on hand to make it 5-0 to United as the forward made the most of a poor clearance by Quantrill.

Luke Swindlehurst’s Bees did come close to a consolation goal five minutes from time, as Lauren Pickett’s shot rattled the crossbar. Paula Howells also tried her luck from distance, but the effort just went wide of the post.

Altogether, it was another solid performance by the Reds, who are yet to concede a goal in the league and will be hoping to continue this mightily impressive run of form when they host Durham Women at Leigh Sports Village next Sunday.

MATCH DETAILS

United Women: Chamberlain; Smith, A. Turner (Sigsworth 45), M. Turner, Greenwood (c); Palmer, Zelem, Green (Hartley 75); Hanson, James (Toone 56), Arnot.

Substitutes not used: Harris, Devlin, Roberts, Bentley.

Scorers:

Default Re: Manchester United Women's Team

UNITED WOMEN 0 DURHAM WOMEN 0

Manchester United Women maintained an unbeaten start in the Women’s Championship with a goalless draw against Durham Women at Leigh Sports Village.

Lauren James and Jess Sigsworth had the best chances in a fiercely fought contest, with the visitors’ goalkeeper, Hannah Reid, producing a number of fine saves to keep United at bay in what is the Reds' first draw of the league campaign.

Casey Stoney made three changes from last weekend’s away victory against London Bees, with Jess Sigsworth, Ella Toone and Martha Harris all returning to the starting XI.

James, who celebrated her seventeenth birthday on Saturday, was the player that caused Durham’s defence the most trouble during a fairly even first half. The youngster had a golden opportunity to put the Reds into the lead early on after Greenwood's delicious cross into the box was pulled back inside by Lizzie Arnot. James’ first-time effort, though, failed to find the target.

Sigsworth then had an opportunity just after ten minutes from an acute angle, but Durham keeper Reid was able to clear the shot out of play. Kirsty Hanson also produced a brilliant cross from the left, but it couldn't find a United player to prod the ball home.

The Reds had further chances in the first half to score the opener. Katie Zelem’s floated cross into the box skimmed over the head of Sigsworth who had charged into the area, while Reid produced a fingertip save to keep United at bay after a goalmouth scramble.

Just before the half-hour mark, Sigsworth was put through on goal after a brilliant ball by James. However, Durham’s shot-stopper was quick off her line to deflect the attempt wide of goal.

Abi Cottam had a chance for the visitors midway through the first half, but while her shot had the accuracy, it lacked the power to trouble Siobhan Chamberlain between United's posts.

After the break, James again had a big chance to break the deadlock. The talented midfielder tried her luck from distance ten minutes into the second half and forced an excellent save by Reid to tip the ball over the bar. From the resulting corner, Sigsworth, who last scored in the 12-0 opening league victory at Aston Villa, was unlucky to have her effort from close range cleared off the line.

Stoney brought Leah Galton on shortly before the hour mark as the Reds continued to press for a winner and the forward immediately provided some fresh impetus as she charged her way into the area, only for her cross to fall into the arms of Reid.

United won a penalty 25 minutes from time after skipper Greenwood was brought down inside the box. Zelem, who scored from the spot against Villa and Sheffield United, was unfortunately denied by Reid who dived to her right to keep the scores level.

With just over 20 minutes to go, Stoney made her second change of the afternoon as Sigsworth made way for Charlie Devlin. The head coach was then forced to make her third and final substitution shortly after as Galton was stretchered off following a collision in the middle of the park. She was replaced by Kirsty Smith.

With the referee indicating ten minutes of stoppage time to be played, the Reds continued to push for a last-gasp winner. James had a shot from just inside the box which was initially dropped by Reid but was stopped from crossing the line. The youngster had another go from further out and again saw Reid tip the ball over the frame of the goal.

Ultimately, United were not able to break the deadlock and must now wait a fortnight, for a home game against Charlton Athletic, for a chance to return to winning ways.
