Jadi Pemain MU, Daniel James Langsung Kerja Keras
Yanu Arifin - detikSport

Dubai - Daniel James antusias mengarungi musim baru bersama Manchester United.

Setelah mendapatkan Daniel James, MU masih berburu pemain lain. Saat ini, MU dirumorkan akan mendatangkan Aaron Wan-Bissaka dari Crystal Palace, yang disebut akan segera menjalani tes medis.

Putra Rusdi K - detikSport

Manchester United new boy Daniel James impresses team-mates as winger 'tops pre-season fitness tests'

* Daniel James joined Manchester United from Swansea for £15m this summer
* The Welshman went to Dubai to work on his fitness before pre-season began
* Reports from Carrington say the 21-year-old has topped the early fitness charts

Manchester United signing Daniel James has made his mark on his new team-mates after besting them in the squad's early pre-season fitness tests.

The Welshman joined United from Swansea in a deal worth £15m this summer.

He arrived ready to go after going on an individual warm-weather training programme in Dubai at the end of last month.

Daniel James has made an impression during his first week training with Manchester United. The Welsh winger has reportedly come top in all of the early re-season fitness tests

And it looks to have paid off, according to The Sun.

James – who flew out with the squad on their pre-season tour of Australia – is understood to have maxed out the bleep tests.

An Old Trafford source said: “He is clearly ahead of the game. He has topped all the early fitness charts. Ole was impressed with seeing him doing his own work.

“He came out top in the sprints, even the short ones, by a good margin of five or so yards. He did one fifty metre sprint that left team-mates five metres behind him and also maxing out the bleep test.”

'As soon as I came in I told the full backs how I like to play': Lightning-quick Daniel James reveals he urged team-mates to use his pace to terrorise defences after starring in Manchester United's win over Perth

* Daniel James didn't score but impressed with a hugely-exciting display
* James revealed he told his team-mates he wants them to put him in behind
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also told fans he will be exciting to watch this season

Daniel James has revealed he told his Manchester United team-mates upon arrival to send him in behind and terrorise defences – and they appear to have listened.

James, on his debut, tore apart Perth Glory's shaky defence with a series of rapid runs on the shoulder of the last man and the A-League side could not live with him.

He turned out a man-of-the-match performance in his first game in a United shirt and, despite a goalless first half while he was on the pitch, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side struck twice to claim their first win of pre-season.

Although Marcus Rashford and James Garner were the players on the scoresheet, it was the lively James who was on the tip of everyone's tongues after the win.

'As soon as I came in I told the full backs my strengths and how I like to play,' James told MUTV after the match. 'Youngy [Ashley Young] cut inside a lot and was playing me in quite a lot.

'That's important over the next few weeks to get that link up over the next few weeks to get the best out of them and the best out of me.

'There were quite a few times I got in there, that's what we want to do, we want to try and get in behind the opposition not just play in front and that's what the gaffer has speaking to me a lot about doing that. And it's important for me to do it for him.'

James, 21, was employed on the left wing during his 45-minute stint and later admitted that is his preferred position.

Daniel James told his Man United team-mates to send him in behind and terrorise defences. James, 21, was employed on the left wing during his 45-minute stint in the Perth friendly

However, the Wales international was quick to dispel any notion that he is a one-trick pony and insisted his versatility could prove useful.

'For me that left position was always my favourite but I like being versatile and playing anywhere across the front three providing I'm in the team,' he added.

'It's important you've got to play all three and our forward players can play that. Anthony [Martial] played No 9 today and it's good for us all to interlink and we swapped a few times and it's good to play all three.'

United boss Solskjaer was also suitably excited by his summer acquisition, telling fans he is likely to get bums off seats all season.

'He's sharp,' Solskjaer said of James. 'He started well. We'll nurture him and he'll be exciting to watch for many, many games.'

James and Co will have another chance to impress on Wednesday when they take on Championship outfit Leeds at the same venue in Perth.

He wasn't a bad player was he? What he did for the club was amazing': Manchester United new boy Daniel James aiming to emulate Ryan Giggs' success at Old Trafford

* Daniel James is out to emulate club legend Ryan Giggs at Manchester United
* The new £18m winger impressed during first game for club against Perth Glory
* He said: 'What he did at United was amazing. All young wingers look up to him'

Daniel James aspires to be like Manchester United great Ryan Giggs whose advice, belief and support is helping the Welsh winger live out his dreams.

Just 17 months after making his senior debut for Swansea, the 21-year-old's remarkable rise shows no sign of abating - despite some notable knocks along the way.

Seeing a move to Leeds collapse at the start of the year was one such setback, yet it meant James would instead become Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first signing as United manager in a deal that could reach around £18million.

The winger has also become a Wales international during that time and could scarcely ask for a better mentor than international manager Giggs, who knows a thing or two about succeeding at Old Trafford.

'Giggsy, as soon as I came into the Wales set up, had ambitions for me,' James said.

'The way he brought me and a lot of other youngsters through has been amazing.

'He spoke to me when I first signed for United. His advice was to be myself, which is what I will try to do.

'He wasn't a bad player was he? What he did at Manchester United was amazing. Every young winger looks up to a person like him.

'He was playing in the Premier League until he was 40 and he was still beating players. Credit to him, the way he looks after his body.

'It is amazing for me, when I go away on internationals, to learn from people like him. He is obviously someone I aspire to be like.'

Daniel James had admitted he is aspiring to be like Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs. United's new exciting winger impressed during his first game for the club against Perth Glory

Making anywhere near the impact of Giggs will be difficult, but James has made a good start to life at United on and off the pitch.

The 21-year-old has impressed in pre-season training and spent more time than any of his team-mates signing autographs and posing for selfies on Thursday when 12,000 fans came descended on the WACA for training.

Two days on and 50,206 were in attendance as James made his first appearance for club in a 2-0 win against Perth Glory at the mammoth Optus Stadium, where he was the standout performer in the first half.

'Walking out there, with the amount of fans that have come from everywhere is surreal, really,' James said. 'Playing with those players is a dream come true.

'I don't think it (signing all those autographs on Thursday) will ever sink in, really.

'Walking out at Old Trafford is the big one. That is when it will probably sink in.

'But the amount of fans that came to training shows the support this club has got. The amount of fans that turned up tonight from all over is just amazing.'

James has barely stopped grinning since joining the group - quite the contrast to the negativity that surrounds the club following a poor season and a lack of summer activity.

Asked if that negativity had played on his mind before deciding to join, James said: 'Not at all. When a club like Manchester United come calling you can't say no.

'As soon as they did there was no thought in my mind not to be here. Today the support was absolutely amazing. I am so glad to be here.'

Default Re: Daniel Owen James

After being spotted by an ex-Man City striker and making his late father proud on his debut, Manchester United new boy Daniel James is ready to set the Premier League alight

* Manchester United new boy Daniel James impressed on his debut on Saturday
* The youngster has been a top prospect, and Man United got him for £15million
* His father sadly passed away in May and never got to see him pull on the shirt
* However, James has honoured his memory and is ready to 'make him proud'

Anyone worried young Dan James may crumble under the pressure of joining Manchester United will be heartened by his first experience of grown-up sport, aged 13.

When the little kid took the crease for South Cave First XI, captain Clive Bailey recalls the complacent adult opposition initially bowling half-paced and surrounding the bat for a catch.

'It never came and within a couple of overs, they were going at Dan full pelt. Unfortunately for them it was too late,' smiles Bailey.

Daniel James made his debut for Manchester United on Saturday after joining for £15million

'He had a fantastic eye and loved the late cut past gully. His timing was so good he could play off the back foot and drill the ball over his right shoulder. I remember him once hitting 50 coming at number seven when we were in a lot of trouble.

'As a fielder, I used him in the outfield for obvious reasons – he was lightning fast and never dropped anything.'

South Cave's cricket pitch was behind Dan's old primary school, within walking distance of the family home he shared with dad Kevan, mum Elaine and older siblings Hannah and Alex, a county standard badminton player.

Kevan, a proud Welshman and rugby fan who moved to the east riding of Yorkshire to work for a quarrying company, was omnipresent in Dan's life, his cricketing team-mate, his chauffeur to football practise, his daily guiding light.

It's a tragic element to Dan's otherwise fairytale story that his Dad passed away in May and didn't get to see his son pull on the famous shirt of United for the first time against Perth Glory on Saturday, impressing as he played the first 45 minutes of a 2-0 win that augurs well for the new season.

The blessing is, his father Kevan lived long enough to know Dan was going to Old Trafford

The blessing is Kevan lived long enough to know Dan was going to Old Trafford and had personally met Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and given his blessing to his son's £15million move from Swansea. Five days after officially signing, Dan attended his father's funeral at the Haltemprice crematorium in nearby Willerby on June 17. Not only did the whole village turn out, but Dan's former academy team-mates from Hull turned out too as a mark of respect.

Dan posted a picture of himself with Kevan on Instagram, with the moving message: 'You are my inspiration and I wouldn't be where I am today without you. Thank you for everything you have ever done for me. I will make you proud I promise!'

Kevan's sister Denise poignantly wrote: 'You'll live on in your wonderful children.' It's something that will surely guide Dan in the years to come as the 21-year-old Welsh international tries to revive United's glory years after the dismal post-Fergie period to date.

Nobody who knew the James family doubts Kevan's influence. 'He was caring and gentle. Daniel used to dote on his every word and it was always quiet, never domineering,' says Bailey.

'The funeral was hugely upsetting but I am sure his Dad would want to make the point to Dan: "Don't let this stop you, carry on. Make your own decisions in life."'

Kevan was a popular figure in the village, always good for a chat as he walked his two labradors, secretary of the aforementioned local cricket club for four years. He ensured Dan got a broad sporting education, cricket, athletics where he was a school sprint champion, and football. Academically, Dan also achieved GCSE's.

From the age of eight, Dan attended the academy at Hull City and Kevan was the most dedicated of all the parents.

'We trained Wednesday and Friday evenings and then Saturday mornings,' says Tigers academy coach Kris Blakeston, who still works at the club.

'Parents could go to a cafe around the corner after drop-off if they wanted but Kevan would always go up to the viewing area to watch Dan play.'

As Dan improved quicker than Hull's facilities, Kevan took the brave decision to let his 16-year-old son move to the other side of the country to continue his football dream at Swansea. It proved a great decision.

South Cave sounds like the fictional setting for a Disney movie. In reality, it's a picturesque village about 15 miles west of Hull, with clean streets and a couple of welcoming pubs and cafes. Some of Hull's current first-team live in the area.

Dan's football talent, particularly his natural pace, stood out early. He represented the East Riding schools from the age of 11.

'He was our baby-faced assassin,' acknowledges their manager Matt Simpson, with a nod to Solskjaer's own nickname.

'He was able to strike the ball cleanly with both feet and at times it appeared glued to his feet. You'd get four or five defenders swarming around him, we'd call it the beehive. The best I coached in 25 years.'

While he dominated local football, standards at the Hull academy were higher. Emphasis was placed on technical skills so that Dan wouldn't rely just on speed, though he was nicknamed Billy Whizz.

James dominated local football as a youth, and was even an impressive cricket player

'Dan was popular but not one of the loud ones,' says Blakeston. 'When we took the team coach to places like Grimsby and Hartlepool, there'd be no mobile phones allowed. The boys would eat their packed lunches and have a good sing-song, all the Hull City chants.

'He had a lot of pace but we tried to teach him to know when to use that speed. From nine to 12, it was all about being comfortable on the ball.

'Dan learned to ride tackles, how to beat players. Later on, we took them on overseas trips to broaden their horizons. Dan came in for some hefty challenges, it was a good learning curve.'

Hull's academy produced the likes of Tom Cairney (Fulham) and Liam Cooper (Leeds). But with the first-team heading towards the Premier League, first-team opportunities were restricted and facilities poor before their move to the current site at Bishops Burton college.

With Daniel allowed to leave for a fixed compensation fee of £72,000, Hull were powerless to stop him joining another club. 'It was easy pickings for another club to get him,' concedes former managing director Nick Thomson.

'We knew he had the potential to become a bit special but there were still no guarantees. The previous year we'd lost a lad called Harry Cardwell to Reading. Great things were expected of him but he's at Grimsby now.'

Dan signed up to the famous Stellar agency run by Jonathan Barnett and David Manesseh whose clients included Gareth Bale and Ashley Cole. Their northern representative, former Manchester City and Everton forward Imre Varadi, tipped off Swansea's head of recruitment David Leadbeater whose home was in Sheffield.

'I trusted Imre and he said #2This kid is going to make it. You have to come and have a look at him."' reveals Leadbeater.

'I watched Dan three times before recommending him. He was obtainable and the money wasn't stupid. His pace was frightening and he was willing to run with the ball and commit people.

'But he had a bit to learn about making the right decisions. He could get you up the pitch 50 yards but then cross into an empty box. He needed to make more right decisions.

'One of his assets was being a good listener and a good learner. That's why he's come on. His physical attributes were never in doubt. I'm told on this first tour with United, they are doing 50 yard sprints and he's first by five yards. He's maxed out on all the bleep tests. I think he could rip it up at United.'

Swansea were also in the Premier League at the time but unlike Hull were keen on signing youngsters in case they fell back into The Championship.

Dan wasn't an overnight success in south Wales, a loan spell at Shrewsbury didn't work out and it wasn't until last September that he started his first league game, shortly before his 21st birthday. From then onwards though, his progress was as rapid as his pace.

'We put Dan in to live with a host family and he benefitted from the team going back into the Championship. Last season we knew we had a star on our hands and to join United a few months later is comic book stuff,' says Huw Jenkins, long-time Swansea chairman before he left last season.

'His performance against Manchester City in the FA Cup raised his profile but the day it changed was at Rotherham in November, even though we lost. There was something special about him, he had the arrogance top players need. Every time he had the ball it was electric.'

Daniel, who had picked up good habits by watching senior Swansea players like Gylfi Sigurdsson at close quarters, thought he was joining Leeds in January until Jenkins pulled the plug because the Yorkshire club wanted to stagger £8million over three years. 'I've been thanked for that now,' smiles Jenkins. Five months later, a bigger United made their move.

Wales is integral to the Dan James story. The way he took the international stage, scoring an important winner against Slovakia in March, persuaded Ryan Giggs he had the right mentality for a club like United.

He's been part of the Wales scene since Under 17s level, part of a bright new generation under youth Geraint Williams that has also included Harry Wilson, Ethan Ampadu and David Brooks.

'We'd invite the youngsters to watch the seniors train, get them right up close to Gareth Bale practising his free-kicks,' says Williams. 'And after, Gareth would come over and chat, answer their questions.

'Dan stood out in one game against Spain, they came up afterwards to ask how old he was, because he was so good. But in the last year or two, he's become more savvy on the park. I saw him play Ipswich last season. He'd suck challenges in and when defenders came too close push the ball past and put on the after-burners.'

One of Daniel's Wales shirts is on display at the Hull academy and his name is on the honours board of those graduates who have played for their country.

'It's what dreams are made of but he always had it in him,' says Blakeston. 'I saw a headshot of Dan with United last week. He's let his hair get a bit bigger but not changed apart from that. What I see now is Dan at nine. This would have meant the world to his Dad.'

'I know he is looking down on me': Manchester United new boy Daniel James driven on by memory of father

* Daniel James admits the memory of his father is what is pushing him to succeed
* The Wales international became Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first signing this summer
* James' father Kevan died at the age of 60 just weeks before he signed at United
* He has impressed in what has been a whirlwind few months for the 21-year-old

Daniel James has revealed the memory of his late father is helping to drive him to success at Manchester United.

The Wales international became Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first signing at Old Trafford when arriving from Swansea last month. But James' dream move to United came at a difficult time as his father Kevan died just weeks earlier at the age of 60.

'Every day, I miss him,' James said. 'He always drove me on when he was here and I know he is looking down on me now, still driving me on.

'There are times when I am a bit down about it but what he would say is just keep playing and working hard.

'I am living with my girlfriend in Manchester, which is nice. The support I have had from the club and everyone around it has been amazing.'

James has impressed in what must be a whirlwind period for the 21-year-old, who only made his professional debut for Swansea in February 2018.

'It is a boyhood dream to play for Manchester United,' he said. 'To come here is a bit surreal.

Daniel James reveals his late father is helping to drive him to success at Manchester United. James should fit seamlessly into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's preferred 4-3-3 formation this season

'You see the number of fans out there and how far some of them have travelled to see. It is going to take a bit of getting used to.'

James' adaptation during pre-season has been impressive. Named man-of-the-match for his performance in the 2-0 win against Perth Glory, the Welsh flyer also showed signs of promise in the 4-0 victory against Leeds - who he nearly joined at the start of the year - and then in the defeat of Inter Milan.

'It was good,' he said after Mason Greenwood sealed a 1-0 triumph against Inter at Singapore's National Stadium on Saturday.

'We played a great team and dominated a lot of the game. We showed what we have been working on over the last 10 to 14 days, the high press and win the ball back as fast as we can.

'It is pleasing but there are three more games to the start of the season. The players who came on did very well, as you saw with Mason today. We need to keep playing and working hard as a team.'

Default Re: Daniel Owen James

Daniel James has areas to improve but Welsh winger can take positives after Manchester United beat Inter Milan

* Daniel James started for Manchester United in friendly against Inter Milan
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer picked a strong starting line-up for the pre-season clash
* James will be encouraged but knows he will have to improve his end product
* Second-half substitute Mason Greenwood scored the winner for Man United

As Manchester United's pre-season preparations stepped up a notch against Inter Milan on Saturday, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer picked what he considered his strongest line-up available.

It was therefore an extremely positive sign for 21-year-old Daniel James to be included, though you could see he has learning to do at this high level.

Remarkably, it's still less than a year since James made his senior debut in league football, for Swansea.

Yet he fits like a glove into the 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 Solskjaer wants to play with rapid wingers.

Signs are James may have a bigger role in the coming season than people thought when he signed from Swansea for £15million last month. On this occasion, it was tough going for him in a hot, humid Singapore National Stadium.

James was mainly deployed on the right with Anthony Martial on the other flank and Marcus Rashford between them, with the wingers given license to swap over to try and unsettle Inter.

The rapidly-quick James has won all the sprinting tests on United's tour and that will come in handy when Solskjaer tries to hit teams on the break in the Premier League.

Daniel James started for Manchester United against Inter Milan but found it tough at times. James should fit seamlessly into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's preferred 4-3-3 formation this season. The Wales international started on the right but struggled to get a foothold in the match. James has plenty of room to improve but his role as a starter should given him plenty of hope

But this was a different exercise. Canny Inter got numbers back and James lacked the space in which to utilise his major asset.

He tried manfully to make himself available to Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Paul Pogba when United marauded forward but to be honest the excitable shrieks from the Singapore crowd were usually for players other than him.

When he did find room to cross, the first couple found Inter heads and the third was a low fizz beyond the far post.

Near half-time came his big chance to score the opening goal but he went for power rather than placement and slashed his finish into the side netting to plenty of groans.

Improving his composure in front of goal will certainly be on his 'to do' list.

United were by far the better team in a goalless first half - 61 per cent possession and 10 shots to three - but the fluency was mainly down the left where Luke Shaw and Martial caused problems.

James stuck to his instructions of hugging the touchline to make the pitch as wide as possible, without creating any individual magic.

However, there was a glimpse of things to come when a burst of acceleration saw him get a shove in the back, earning United a free-kick in a dangerous area. Ole will love that.

James was part of wholesale changes made by Solskjaer after an hour. He may have felt dissatisfied with his end product but it was symbolic that he trudged off with Pogba and Rashford rather than coming in with the young 'reserves' like Tahith Chong.

Nobody said it was going to be easy to make the jump from the Championship to the biggest club in England, let alone make the immediate impact of a Ryan Giggs, now his Wales manager.

But James can be heartened by even being in Solskjaer's starting XI. It suggests he'll be given the chance to be more than a bit-part player. He'll just have to learn on the job if he wants to keep Alexis Sanchez out of the team long-term.

Daniel James insists he'll be steeled against tough tackling in the Premier League after ugly scenes involving Moussa Sissoko during Manchester United's friendly against Tottenham

* Daniel James has been a target for opponents during Manchester United's tour
* Moussa Sissoko appeared to stamp on the winger during clash with Tottenham
* The £15m former Swansea starlet insists he can cope with the treatment

Manchester United's new £15million signing Daniel James says he is ready for the roughhouse treatment coming his way this season.

It follows an ugly incident in United's 2-1 win over Tottenham in Shanghai on Thursday when James was fouled and then stamped on by Spurs midfielder Moussa Sissoko.

The Wales winger has been targeted by opponents on a number of occasions in United's wins over Perth Glory, Leeds, Inter Milan and Spurs on tour.

Although Mauricio Pochettino apologised for his players' conduct in the first half at the Hongdou Stadium, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted that James' pace is always going to draw fouls.

The 21-year-old former Swansea player also accepts he will be a target, saying: 'If you watch any of my games from last season I think it's going to happen to me every game.

'I got some rough treatment (against Spurs) but it's literally every game – I'm used to it. It's just about getting back up and getting on with it.

'It's always going to be part of my game. Being a winger, I'm always going to get fouled but it's just about how you get on with it. I don't let it get in my head and just keep going.

'The Sissoko one, I've nipped in just before and he's fouled me at the edge of the box in a good position. Part of my game is about winning those fouls and getting in good positions.'

Asked if he gets enough protection from referees, James added: 'Yeah, I think I do. I'd say in these friendly games the refs are a bit more lenient, maybe a bit more lenient than they are back home.

Manchester United's new signing Dan James says he is ready for rough treatment in top flight. The Wales winger admitted that there had been a couple of incidents with Moussa Sissoko

'It's a friendly so you're always going to be more lenient. They don't want to be handing out red cards. We'll see when we get back, but certainly last year there was a bit of rough treatment.'

James and United's other new signing Aaron Wan-Bissaka, also 21, have impressed on tour along with four of the club's academy graduates - Mason Greenwood, Tahith Chong, Axel Tuanzebe and Angel Gomes who scored the winner against Spurs with his first senior goal.

'Obviously my aim is to play but I don't expect to play,' said James. 'We've got amazing forward players here and even the youngsters coming through have done really well.

'Mason has scored two, Chongy has done really well and Angel scored today. Spurs are going to be one of the teams challenging for the league next season, as we hope to.

'It's been a great tour. That was our fourth game and we shared the minutes. It was up and down and at times, and it was slow because the humidity really got to us. We're going to feel a lot fitter going back.

'We've been showing what we've been doing in training. That high press and trying to win the ball back. When we've won the ball high up and we've gone on the counter which is something the gaffer has brought it. That's his philosophy.'

United still have friendlies against Kristiansund in Oslo on Tuesday and AC Milan in Cardiff before they kick off the season at home to Chelsea, and James has staked his claim for a place in the starting line-up.

'It's always going to be tough but it's a long season,' he added. 'If it's not there at the start, I've just got to keep biding my time and try and get in that team.

'Obviously, I hope that I start on the first day (at home to Chelsea) but it's not always the case. I've started a few but we've shared the minutes. I think all the positions are still up for grabs.

'The gaffer has given everyone a chance to play. We've still got two games to go before the start of the season. Everyone is playing well and hopefully it will be difficult for him to pick the team.'
