'The boy has no fear, he is as brave as a lion and he got us the win': Ole Gunnar Solskjaer full of praise for his 'man of the match' Brandon Williams after Manchester United's win in Belgrade

* Manchester United tasted victory away from home for the first time since March
* They dug deep to seal a 1-0 over Partizan Belgrade in the Europa League
* Anthony Martial's first-half penalty separated the two sides in Serbia

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer lauded man-of-the-match Brandon Williams after the teenager helped Manchester United edge past Partizan Belgrade and end their 11-match winless run on the road.

United tasted victory away from home for the first time since March's remarkable Champions League triumph at Paris St Germain by digging deep on a difficult night in Serbia.

Partizan pushed to the death, backed by a raucous home support, but Anthony Martial's first-half spot-kick proved enough as United came through Thursday's Europa League clash with a hard-fought 1-0 win.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer lauded man-of-the-match Brandon Williams (left) on Thursday night. The teenager helped Manchester United edge past Partizan Belgrade in the Europa League

'Of course, I'm happy now that we can just look forward to the next one,' Solskjaer said after winning on the road for the first time in 33 weeks.

'Try to build momentum. We need to win away from home in the league, but another clean sheet and that gives you a platform to win games from.'

Martial scored the match-winning goal but Williams got the lion's share of the praise, with the 19-year-old bursting into the box and drawing the game-defining penalty.

It was an impressive performance by the left-back, while full debutant James Garner, 18, came through his baptism of fire impressively.

'They did excellent,' Solskjaer said of the teenagers.

'I thought Jimmy just grew and grew in the game, became better and better.

'And, for me, Brandon was man of the match. He's been fantastic the few games he's played. The boy has no fear, he is as brave as a lion and he got us the win.

Anthony Martial scored the match-winning goal but Williams got the lion's share of the praise

'In games like these when we get the first goal, we need to learn when to get the second, when to get the third.

'I thought today we had loads of opportunities to make sure we're in a comfortable lead but we didn't play that pass forward.

'But Brandon has an absolutely great attitude. The boy is going to be a top, top player.'

It was a much-needed victory having gone 33 weeks without winning away from Old Trafford, with United holding tight in Belgrade as Partizan laid siege on their goal.

'We defended really well, in the box especially,' Solskjaer said.

'I think we showed some grit in that respect. We could have defended better up front, we should have stopped them.

'They pushed us back, we need to get more intensity in our pressing, but, yeah, proud and kept another clean sheet.'

Solskjaer baulked at the suggestion United rode their luck and was quick to praise the home faithful, especially given the pre-match concerns that racism may mar the Group L encounter.

'I don't know about luck but we had to defend really well,' the Norwegian added.

'I thought their team was really good second half, lots of courage, send men forward, create loads of opponents. We defended well.

'The crowd was unbelievable. I think the crowd should be very proud of their team and the team should be very proud of their crowd because it was an excellent atmosphere.

'You know what we talked about before the game... wow. the fans were great.'

Partizan counterpart Savo Milosevic was rightly proud of his side for their display against United.

'First of all, congratulations to Manchester United for the victory,' the former Aston Villa striker said.

'And even more of a congratulations to our players for everything that they have shown in the 90 minutes.

'I think that it is not an easy task to be equal or even better opponent that Manchester United for the better part of the game and I think they did so and were fantastic.'

WILLIAMS VOTED MAN OF THE MATCH IN BELGRADE

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer agreed with the supporters' view that Brandon Williams was our Man of the Match in the 1-0 Europa League win at Partizan Belgrade.

The attacking wing-back galloped into the home box to earn the first-half penalty that was tucked away by Anthony Martial to secure our first away win of the season.

It was the highlight of a composed showing by the young Mancunian in intimidating surroundings, as he defended bravely and won a series of challenges. He also rightly survived a handball shout at the far post towards the end as Partizan sought an equaliser.

“Brandon was Man of the Match,” Ole told MUTV at the Partizan Stadium. “Absolutely excellent. Fantastic attitude.

”Great defending, great in the air. He gets us the penalty by driving with the ball forward. We've found a left-back there.“

MUTV pundits Danny Webber and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake also nominated goalkeeper Sergio Romero and midfielder James Garner, who made his maiden senior start, alongside Williams.

POLL RESULT

Brandon Williams - 60%
Sergio Romero - 30%
James Garner - 10%

Thank you to everybody who voted.

Shoving Neal Maupay into advertising hoardings and kicking Steven Alzate in the chest… Brandon Williams showed his fiery side on first Premier League start - but also proved he does not look out of place at the top level

* Brandon Williams produced an excellent performance on his first top-flight start
* He stepped up to the physical and technical challenges posed by Brighton
* The Manchester United man escaped a red card after booting Steven Alzate
* The teenager has already developed a strong connection with Marcus Rashford

Brandon Williams may be lacking in experience, but the teenager showed why he is ready for a regular spot in Manchester United's first-team during theIR 3-1 win over Brighton.

The left back displayed his fiery side at Old Trafford, shoving Neal Maupay into the advertising hoardings before squaring up to the Brighton forward.

As the duo tussled for a ball which was rolling out of play, the Mancunian gave a nudge which sent Maupay flying. Thankfully, Williams showed restraint as the Frenchman rose to his feet in anger.

Manchester United defender Brandon Williams squares up to Brighton forward Neal Maupay

And the 19-year-old must have had his heart in his mouth in the second half when VAR reviewed his high tackle on Steven Alzate, but referee Jonathan Moss brandished a yellow card.

Williams was making his first Premier League start, and he proved he was up for it from the outset against the Seagulls, bombing down the left flank in support of fellow academy graduate Marcus Rashford.

United scored two goals in two minutes as Andreas Pereira's deflected effort bobbled in to break the deadlock on 17 minutes, and Scott McTominay doubled their advantage when he scrambled in from close range.

The 19-year-old evaded a red card when he caught Steven Alzate on the chest with a high boot

The two-goal lead provided the platform from which Williams could thrive on his seventh appearance for the senior team.

He is one of 11 academy graduates who have been used by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this term, and he repaid his manager with a dynamic performance.

First, he followed Leanardo Trossard diligently before executing a perfectly timed tackle and dribbling 20 yards upfield, igniting another United attack.

The full back almost paid the price for one lapse in concentration when he lost Aaron Connolly at a defensive set-piece, but the Republic of Ireland international fluffed his lines from six yards out.

Williams was back at his exuberant best after the break and refused to be bullied by Lewis Dunk, harrying the visiting defender and winning a throw-in.

The Brighton captain did pull one goal back with a 64th-minute header, but Rashford provided a swift response when he fired in off the crossbar two minutes later.

Home fans rose to their feet at Old Trafford to applaud the full back as he was substituted

The debutant almost had a goal of his own shortly after Rashford's second, stinging the palms of Matt Ryan who showed sharp reflexes to deny Williams his first in United colours.

He continued to fly down the touchline and almost teed up Rashford for his second.

United's under-18's coach Neil Ryan says Williams is an 'inspiration' to his players, and on this evidence that claim is not without foundation.

Williams and Rashford walked off the field together in a double substitution in second-half stoppage time, but it felt as if the rapturous applause was directed towards the promising upstart rather than the goalscoring hero.

Brandon Williams 'would eat his opponents nose to win the match!' Gary Neville as he heaps praise on Manchester United starlet

* Gary Neville offered up unique praise on Man United star Brandon Williams
* The 19-year-old 'would eat his opponent's nose to win the match,' Neville said
* Williams impressed once again as United overcame Wolves in an FA Cup replay

Gary Neville insists that 19-year-old Brandon Williams would 'eat his opponents nose to win the match' as he lauded the performance of the Manchester United teenager against Wolves.

Williams has emerged as a breakout star under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and is in the running to be the club's first-choice left-back ahead of Luke Shaw moving forward.

His performance in the 1-0 FA Cup third-round replay win will not have hurt his chances and Neville, who played at full-back during his career at United, heaped praise on the academy starlet.

Brandon Williams received a glowing assessment from Gary Neville after his game vs Wolves. The former Manchester United full-back feels Williams 'would eat his opponents nose to win'

Williams' emergence has been one of the bright sparks for United in a campaign that has been plagued by inconsistency.

The teenager has capitalised on fleeting opportunities with injuries to Shaw and Ashley Young opening up opportunities for him to stake a claim for more minutes.

The 1-0 win over Wolves meant that United produced back-to-back clean sheets for the first time since September and Williams takes confidence that strong foundations at the back can guide them to success.

Williams' emergence has been one of the best moments of Manchester United's season so far. He has shown composure beyond his years and is contention to start against Liverpool next

'As long as we don't concede, we know we're going to score,' Williams told MUTV on Wednesday night.

'If we do our job at the back and the full team puts the shift in, I'm sure we'll get the win like we did.'

Gary Lineker also took time to highlight Williams on social media, writing: 'The more I watch Brandon Williams, the more I like what I see. Another exciting young English talent.'

Along with Neville's praise, Williams already appears to have the trust of his manager which ensures he has a bright future at United.

Speaking after a win against Burnley in December, Solskjaer said: 'He's never let us down.

'He's a top young kid, never fazed, he's got a great attitude, confident, he can go forward, defend, he's brave, he's got everything a Man United kid should have.

'That's why he's playing, you're never scared of putting Brandon in any type of game.'

Williams will hope he has done enough to earn a start against table-toppers Liverpool this weekend when United make the trip to Anfield.

WILLIAMS: WE DID OUR JOB AT THE BACK

Brandon Williams believes Manchester United’s defensive resilience helped us edge out Wolves to progress to the fourth round of the Emirates FA Cup.

The Reds won 1-0 to secure consecutive clean sheets for the first time since September and the 19-year-old believes the victory, courtesy of Juan Mata’s 67th-minute chip, was built from the back.

“As long as we don't concede, we know we're going to score,” Williams told MUTV after the final whistle.

“If we do our job at the back and the full team puts the shift in, I'm sure we'll get the win like we did.”

United finally managed to beat Nuno Espirito Santo’s side at the sixth attempt since their promotion in 2018, after three draws and two defeats in five previous meetings.

The youngster was complimentary when asked about the visitors but said he felt confident in defending against the threat of their dangerous wingers, Adama Traore and Pedro Neto.

“They're a good, organised team,” Williams added. “They do well at what they do, but we managed to come through with a win and we're through to the next round.

“Last game, [Traore] started on my side but I knew I was going to be playing against one of them. Neto came on my side and it's fine, I'll come up against whoever.”

An away tie at Tranmere Rovers or Watford awaits in the fourth round, with that replay going ahead at Prenton Park next Thursday.

Williams is confident in our ability to progress no matter who we come up against, although attention will now turn immediately to Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

“It's a good competition to be in, we'll try to go as far as we can and I'm sure we can win the competition.

“[It’s] another tricky fixture but we’ve got games coming up that are more important at the minute. When it comes up, we'll try to win that.”

'Trust me Ole... please give him a chance': Manchester United legend Patrice Evra reveals how he pleaded with Solskjaer to pick Brandon Williams after seeing youngster in Under 21s training

* Brandon Williams has been a breakthrough performer at Old Trafford this season
* The 19-year-old made his debut in September and retained his place in the side
* Club legend Patrice Evra has now taken some credit for helping Williams step up
* The Frenchman spoke to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after seeing Williams in action

Patrice Evra has revealed he played a starring role in the emergence of Brandon Williams into the Manchester United first team.

The teenage defender has been one of the breakthrough performers at Old Trafford this season, and has been tipped for a long future with the Red Devils.

Williams hasn't looked back since making his debut for the club in September, and now it has emerged club legend Evra ensured his opportunity was given after watching the youngster play.

Brandon Williams has Patrice Evra to thank for his emergence in the Man United senior team. Evra admitted he made a point of watching Williams will doing his coaching badges at the club. The 19-year-old has become a mainstay in the side and has shown confidence and tenacity. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gave Williams his chance in September and played him 10 times since

'I'm doing my coaching badges at Manchester United, I go like two weeks per month to do my course, and someone sent me a video about Brandon,' Evra said recently on the COPA90 YouTube channel.

'I was watching it and was like "wow, he has got something I really love".'

Evra then revealed he made the point of going down to one of the United youth sessions in order to get a closer look, before taking his findings to manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and putting in a word.

'I went to training and actually he was with the U21s, and they made me do a session as well with the U21s,' Evra added.

'So, I saw him, and he was tough, and after the training session I went with the first-team and I saw Ole. I said "Ole, do you know about that kid Brandon Williams?" "Yeah, they say he is good".

'I said "trust me Ole, since I left I can see he can play he can play at left back." I said please give him a chance.'

The conversation clearly worked, as Williams has now featured 10 times in the Premier League with three months of the season left to play.

The youngster already has a goal to his name, and five yellow cards in what has been a fiery start to his career at Old Trafford.

Manchester United 'ready to offer Brandon Williams major new contract' with defender set to receive bump in £4,000-a-week wage after impressing boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

* Brandon Williams is set to be offered a bumper new deal at Manchester United
* The 19-year-old has cemented himself as a first-team player at Old Trafford
* Williams currently earns £4,000 per week but has reportedly earned new terms
* He made his debut in the Carabao Cup earlier this season and has pushed on
* The left-back is expected to be an important figure for United's run-in

Manchester United are set to offer Brandon Williams a new contract to reflect his status as a first-team player, according to reports.

The 19-year-old currently earns £4,000 per week but United chiefs are in talks to improve this significantly, with the defender impressing boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer throughout the campaign.

Williams only agreed his latest contract in October after playing twice for the first team but club chiefs are ready to renegotiate a deal with the teenager having progressed rapidly since then, according to The Athletic.

Manchester United starlet Brandon Williams is set to be offered a new contract. The 19-year-old defender has impressed boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (left) this season

The promising left-back made his debut as a substitute in Carabao Cup win over Rochdale before making his first start in the away fixture against AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League.

Since then, Williams has pushed on and proved to be an important piece in Solskjaer's set-up, making 26 appearances, which include nine Premier League starts, this season.

The youngster has shown his versatility, too, having played comfortably anywhere on the left wing and has even featured on the right-hand side when called upon.

The report goes on to suggest that Williams will play an important part in United's run-in this summer once the campaign resumes later this month.

The defender has received high praise from his manager following his impressive display in the 4-0 win over Norwich earlier this season.

Solskjaer said: 'His hunger is a lesson for everyone who wants to be a footballer, the attitude he's showing. It'll be up to him, myself and the club to keep him that hungry. I don't expect him to change because he's got the heart for it.'

He has also made an impact at international level, with England boss Gareth Southgate keeping a close eye on his development.

Williams has impressed for England Under 20s this year and is expected to be called up to the Under 21s by Aidy Boothroyd.

Williams established himself as a first-team player after breaking into the squad this season. Williams (No 53) scored in United's 3-3 draw with Sheffield United back in November. Williams has enjoyed a breakthrough season at United, making 26 appearances so far

It's been a memorable year for the teenager and he showed he was willing to share his success with the ones he loved most.

Last month Williams generously splashed out on a £40,000 Mercedes 4x4 for his dad's birthday, with the heartwarming moment captured on camera.

The short clip begins with Williams' father making his way out to the street and spotting the new car parked in front of him as family and friends shout 'happy birthday!'.

He points at the shiny Mercedes and asks: 'That one? Seriously? I've gone all shaky.'

His dad says: 'Are you joking me? Are you taking the p***?!', before Williams tells him: 'No, go check it out'.

The heartwarming clip was shared by Twitter account @utdreport on Thursday and quickly went viral with over 7,500 retweets and 58,000 likes.

Williams previously revealed that his family didn't believe him when he was called up to the first-team squad for a Champions League trip to PSG last season.

'It was just excitement. I rang my family straight away, but they didn't believe me,' he said.

Brandon Williams forced off shortly after coming on as a sub after suffering gruesome head injury... leaving Manchester United down to 10 men when Southampton grabbed injury-time equaliser

* Manchester United conceded very late equaliser to draw against Southampton
* Substitute Brandon Williams forced off with horror cut to leave side with 10 men
* The defender clashed with Kyle Walker-Peters just minutes after coming on

Brandon Williams suffered a horror cut to his head that left Manchester United down to ten men before conceding a last-minute equaliser against Southampton.

The young defender had been brought on for Luke Shaw after 75 minutes but had to depart after 89 minutes following a clash of heads with Saints full-back Kyle Walker-Peters.

In his absence the hosts, who had gone ahead through Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial before Stuart Armstrong halved the deficit, saw Michael Obafemi register a 96th-minute leveller to dent their Champions League hopes.

Young full-back is treated on the pitch by medics wearing full personal protective equipment

Williams was helped off the pitch and left his side to play the rest of the game with 10 men

After the game, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said: 'He’s got a cut above his eye. I haven’t been to see him yet.'

Williams was treated on the pitch by a team of physios wearing full personal protective equipment before being helped off the field.

Having used all five substitutions the hosts had to defend with 10 men, while five minutes of injury time were added on due to the delay.

While a victory would have seen Manchester United leapfrog Leicester and Chelsea - who both lost at the weekend - into third, instead the club remain fifth.

They are level on points with Leicester with inferior goal difference and one point behind Chelsea with three games to play.

'It has taken a huge amount of hard work to reach this point and it has been really special for me to break through into the squad. I've learned a lot throughout the season from the manager, his coaching staff and my team-mates and I want to repay the trust that they have all shown in me.

'I know that everyone at the club is working really hard every day to achieve success in the coming years and I am really excited to be a part of that.'

Williams has made 33 appearances across all competitions, including 17 in the Premier League. Williams said it's a 'dream come true to be playing in the first team' as he put pen to paper

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer paid tribute to the England Under-20 international, saying: 'Brandon has had an excellent first season, so we are delighted that he has signed a new contract.

'This new deal is a real testament to his hard work and the progress that he has made since his debut.

'Brandon never looked back after stepping up from the academy and having come all the way through the system he understands what it means to play for Manchester United.

'He has all of the attributes required to be a member of this exciting young squad. He will continue to learn every day in training and we look forward to watching him develop over the coming seasons.'
