'The scan came back quite positive': Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirms Marcus Rashford will return for the business end of Manchester United's season

* Marcus Rashford has been sidelined with a back injury since January
* The England forward is likely to return to action before the end of this season
* Rashford's return would be a big boost for the United's Champions League quest
* United can still finish in the top four and win the FA Cup and Europa League

Manchester United and England have received a huge boost with Marcus Rashford due to return for the final weeks of the season.

There were fears the 22-year-old striker would miss the rest of the campaign and Euro 2020 after suffering a double stress fracture in his back against Wolves in January - but latest scan results have offered a better outlook.

United now hope their star striker will be back in action at the start of May, allowing him to play the final three rounds of the Premier League and potential FA Cup and Europa League finals.

Manchester United's Marcus Rashford is likely to return to action before the end of the season. United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed the news ahead of his side's trip to Everton. The England international has been a key player for the Red Devils so far this season

Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate will also be gladdened by the news with the European Championship due to start on June 12. He also hopes to have captain Harry Kane back by then.

'The scan came back quite positive,' confirmed United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. 'We cant rush it and it'll probably be another couple of months before we see him but when he's fit, he will be stronger for it.

'He's around the place, in the dressing-room before games, at half-time. He wants the boys to do well so he can come back and play in the Europa League, the FA Cup Final. He wants to be there when the business end comes.'

Solskjaer has done everything to keep Rashford as involved as possible during his lay-off and he remains a daily visitor to the training ground.

'His life is Man United,' added the manager. 'He's watching the academy boys, his nephew, he's in and around the place. After training he goes and sees the under-18s.

'That's the family feel we want in this club as well and it's important to have Marcus, one of the main contributors on the pitch this season, also contribute off the pitch.'

But Rashford has been out of action for the Red Devils since January with a back injury

Solksjaer added Rashford has been working hard in the training ground to get back to fitness

Rashford had scored 19 times for United this season before his injury. He has also established himself in Southgate's strongest England XI and has eight goals in 28 appearances for his country.

There have also been reports that he's taken the opportunity of his lay-off to remove floating bone from his ankle.

Meanwhile, Solskjaer says Fred deserves credit for adapting to English football since being taken off during last season's 4-0 drubbing at Everton.

He scored twice in Thursday's win over Club Bruges and Solksjaer said: 'You don't have time for three or four touches or to get your studs on the ball, all those little habits Brazilian players have from a slower type of game. Fred has really taken on the challenge.'

United will assess Anthony Martial for Sunday's match at Everton after he felt a twinge in a thigh during training.

'He's struggling a little bit': Anthony Martial could miss Manchester United's clash with Tottenham after colliding with a post as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer rules him out of LASK game

* Anthony Martial will miss Manchester United's clash with LASK through injury
* The Frenchman collided with a post during United's 2-0 victory over City
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says the club would back a decision to scrap the season

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed Anthony Martial will miss out on Manchester United's Europa League round of 16 clash with LASK on Thursday.

Martial collided with a goalpost during the Manchester derby victory and Solskjaer says the Frenchman may also be unfit to play against Tottenham on Sunday.

'Anthony hurt himself when he slid into the post so he's not ready for this game,' Solskjaer told reporters.

'Hopefully he can be ready for Sunday (against Tottenham) but I'm not sure. He's struggling a little bit.'

The Red Devils boss insists United would back any decision to scrap this season's Premier League and European competitions over the coronavirus pandemic.

United will play behind closed doors for the first time in Austria on Thursday night when they face LASK in the first leg of their Europa League last 16 tie.

Anthony Martial has been ruled out of Manchester United's Europa League clash with LASK. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Manchester United would back a decision to scrap competitions

Asked if he would understand should the season be written off, Solskjaer said: 'I would understand, yes, under the circumstances.

'Of course it's up to the experts to decide. The main concern must be the health of the general public, and the decision that will be made we will back.

'These are difficult circumstances not just for football but society. We have to do what we're told and get on with the game if that's what authorities think we should do.

'We don't know what's going to happen. I think football is for fans. Without fans we are nothing anyway. The game should be always for them. Tomorrow we might get a different message or in two weeks.'

* The 22-year-old forward has been out of action since January due to back injury
* Rashford reportedly visited United's Carrington complex on Monday morning
* He spoke with club doctors and worked out in the gym in bid to regain fitness
Marcus Rashford is close to a Manchester United return after heading to their training ground on Monday to finish treatment on a serious back injury.

The 22-year-old England forward has been out of action since January after suffering a double stress fracture in his back.

He was set to miss the rest of the Premier League season and also a major doubt for Euro 2020 but the coronavirus crisis has given him extra time to recover.

The Sun reported that Rashford visited United's Carrington complex on Monday morning and spoke with club doctors.

He also spent time in the gym where he worked on regaining his fitness after more than three months out.

It is believed the forward has been in a few times over the past five weeks since the Government put the UK in Covid-19 lockdown.

Luke Shaw having treatment to help him recover for Manchester United's trip to Crystal Palace after suffering a twisted ankle against Southampton

* Luke Shaw went off during Manchester United's 2-2 draw against Southampton
* Shaw is having treatment to help him prepare for the trip to Crystal Palace
* Brandon Williams, who suffered a facial cut on Monday night, could replace him

Luke Shaw is undergoing treatment on a twisted ankle as he battles to be fit for Manchester United's trip to Crystal Palace on Thursday.

If Shaw is ruled out of the game at Selhurst Park, Brandon Williams may be able to deputise despite suffering a facial cut in Monday's draw with Southampton at Old Trafford.

Shaw limped out of the game in the 75th minute and was replaced by Williams who then went off in injury-time following a clash of heads with Kyle Walker-Peters.

Luke Shaw is having treatment to prepare him for Manchester United's trip to Crystal Palace

Southampton snatched a late equaliser while United were down to 10 men, but both players were at Carrington on Tuesday as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side prepared to bounce back from the disappointment of dropping two points.

It's understood that Shaw's injury isn't serious, but it remains to be seen if he can recover in time to face Palace. United take on Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley three days later, so Solskjaer may be reluctant to risk the England left back who has been part of an unchanged line-up in the last five Premier League games.

Williams should be available to step in despite needing stitches in the small cut next to his left eye. The 19-year-old was able to drive into Carrington on Tuesday following the worrying incident and is said to have suffered no ill effects.

Shaw was forced off 75 minutes in the draw against Southampton after twisting his ankle

Speaking about the injuries after the Southampton game, Solskjaer said: 'Luke twisted his ankle.

'Hopefully we can have some good news on him after the scan. Brandon has a cut above his eye. I've not been to see him, he's with the medical staff.'

If both players are ruled out, Solskjaer could turn to Diogo Dalot who can play at both right back and left back but has only had 63 minutes of action since early March in the FA Cup win at Norwich last month.

Centre back Victor Lindelof can also be used on the left or United could switch to a back-three as they have on several occasions this season.

Solskjaer's side could have moved into the third place if they had held out for a win over Southampton, but now need a positive result against Palace to keep up the pressure on Chelsea and Leicester in the battle for Champions League qualification.

Mason Greenwood is a doubt for Manchester United's trip to Crystal Palace due to the ankle injury caused by the rash late challenge from Oriol Romeu that went unpunished by VAR

* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is sweating on the fitness of starlet Mason Greenwood
* The striker is struggling with a knock caused by a late tackle from Oriol Romeu
* Solskjaer says Greenwood got through the Southampton draw on adrenaline

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed that Mason Greenwood is a doubt for Manchester United’s trip to Crystal Palace due to the ankle injury he sustained in a late challenge from Southampton’s Oriol Romeu on Monday night.

Solskjaer though the Saints midfielder could have been sent off over the incident in which he sank his studs into Greenwood’s left ankle which twisted awkwardly.

The teenager striker played on until he was substituted in the 84th minute of the 2-2 draw and Old Trafford and later felt the full effects of the challenge.

Greenwood is now battling to be fit for the Palace clash at Selhurst Park on Thursday night along with Luke Shaw who also suffered an ankle injury against Southampton.

Brandon Williams, who sustained a small cut next to his left eye that required stitches, should be available.

‘I said after the game that my ankles were a bit weak after many years of football, but obviously Mason carried on and I think it should have been looked upon by the referee definitely,’ said Solskjaer.

‘In the heat of the moment he will play on and adrenaline gets you going, and then you get a little bit of reaction after.

‘Luke and Mason, their ankles are swollen and a bit blown up. I'll give them as much recovery time as possible to give them a chance.

‘Brandon should be fine, he has a gash over the eye but if he can see out of it then ... we've not trained obviously this morning yet but we'll hopefully have two, maybe all three of them.’

OLE'S UPDATE ON BAILLY INJURY

Manchester United's defensive ranks were depleted by another head injury on Sunday evening, when Eric Bailly was forced to leave the field during the first half of the Emirates FA Cup semi-final defeat to Chelsea.

The Ivory Coast international had been selected in a back three with Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire but he was unable to complete the first 45 minutes after colliding with the latter.

Bailly and Maguire clashed accidentally when both men went to challenge Chelsea's centre-forward Olivier Giroud and although the captain had to have his head bandaged, it was Eric who came off worse.

After a long break in play to allow the players to receive treatment, leading to eleven minutes of injury time, Bailly was carried off the field on a stretcher and taken to hospital.

Shortly before the decisive blow, he had needed attention from the club's medical staff after also bumping heads with opposing centre-back Kurt Zouma.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reported:

“Eric is in hospital, going through all the routine checks and protocols. He got a cut in the back of his head as well so I don’t really know any more. I haven’t heard or spoken to the doctor about him.

”Of course that moment had a big, big impact on the game. Eric played very well in his 42 or 44 minutes that he was on for and we conceded just after the restart which was very disappointing.

“Eric was [until then] a big part of us not having any chances created against us really.”

Bailly was making his second start since the resumption of the 2019/20 season, as he was previously in the line-up for the FA Cup quarter-final win over Norwich City.

The defender was replaced at Wembley by striker Anthony Martial, with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer opting to change his formation from the 3-4-1-2 that began the contest.

On a more positive note regarding injuries, Brandon Williams was back in the team six days after he needed stitches in a head wound. The young left-back collided with Southampton's Kyle Walker-Peters during last Monday's 2-2 draw in the Premier League at Old Traffford.

Manchester United defender Eric Bailly leaves Wembley pitch in a neck brace and on oxygen after sickening clash of heads with his own team-mate Harry Maguire during FA Cup semi-final with Chelsea

* Man United's Eric Bailly was forced off in the first half with a serious head injury
* Bailly received attention for 10 minutes after clashing heads with Harry Maguire
* £80m defender Maguire was patched up and was given the all-clear to continue
* Bailly was put into a neck brace, given oxygen and transported off by stretcher

Eric Bailly was forced off the pitch wearing an oxygen mask during Manchester United's FA Cup semi-final with Chelsea after clashing heads with team-mate Harry Maguire.

Both required medical attention after they challenged for the same ball to prevent Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud from gaining possession late in the first half but it was Bailly who had come off worse.

Maguire was patched up and was given the all-clear to continue after successfully completing his concussion checks but Bailly was forced to leave the pitch after it was deemed unsafe for him to carry on.

After almost 10 minutes of attention the Ivory Coast defender attempted to walk off the pitch before falling to the ground as he reached the sideline.

Medical staff carefully put Bailly into a neck brace before moving him onto a stretcher in worrying scenes.

Bailly was given oxygen as he was transported from the pitch, surrounded by five medics wearing protective clothing as part of coronavirus prevention measures.

Both sets of players applauded the defender as he was wheeled down the tunnel on a stretcher.

Bailly had previously returned to action after an aerial collision with Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma.

Anthony Martial came on to replace Bailly, seeing United change from an ineffective back five.

But the change couldn't inspire United as Frank Lampard's men hit two quickfire goals after the break before a Maguire own goal made it 3-0 to the Blues.

Bruno Fernandes netted a late consolation from the spot but Lampard's side went through and deserved winners and will now meet Arsenal in the FA Cup final.

Eric Bailly leaves hospital after overnight stay due to concussion suffered in sickening clash of heads with Harry Maguire... but he is set to miss Manchester United's crucial clash with West Ham

* Eric Bailly was released from hospital after leaving Wembley in a neck brace
* The Manchester United defender clashed heads with team-mate Harry Maguire
* Maguire was able to continue but Bailly needed oxygen before leaving the pitch
* The 26-year-old has been unfortunate with injuries since joining the club in 2016

Eric Bailly has returned to Manchester United after spending the night in a London hospital with concussion.

Bailly was injured in United’s FA Cup semi-final defeat to Chelsea on Sunday, but was given the all-clear to travel back to Manchester on Monday.

The Ivory Coast defender is unlikely to figure in United’s Premier League game at home to West Ham on Wednesday due to the safety protocols governing concussion.

Bailly was treated for over 10 minutes while Maguire also received medical attention

Bailly twice needed treatment towards the end of the first half at Wembley after first clashing heads with Kurt Zouma and then colliding with his United team-mate Harry Maguire shortly afterwards.

The 26-year-old, who suffered a cut to the back of his head, was treated on the pitch for concussion and tried to walk off but collapsed on the touchline.

Bailly needed further attention from United’s medical team before he was carried away on a stretcher and taken to hospital.

The defender posted a message to fans alongside a photo of him giving the thumbs up on Instagram after being discharged from hospital.

He wrote: 'Thank you all for the messages of support. I am ok, it was just a scare. I feel the pain of yesterday's defeat even more.

'But we have to get back up and refocus on the two big games we have this week.'

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer claimed that the lengthy delays and concern for Bailly affected his team’s concentration as Chelsea struck either side of half-time on the way to a 3-1 win.

‘The blow to Eric’s head when Harry and Eric stayed down for a long time, we seemed to lose concentration for a little while and conceding the goal straight after that had a massive impact,’ said Solskjaer.

‘Eric is in hospital going through all the routine checks and protocols. He got a cut in the back of his head too so I don’t really know (how bad it is).

After challenging for the same ball, Bailly and Maguire received medical attention on the pitch. Bailly previously returned to action after an aerial collision with Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma

‘I’ve not spoken to the doctor about him but of course that had a big, big impact on the game.

'Eric played very well in the 42 minutes he stayed on and we conceded just after the restart which was very disappointing. Eric was a big part of us not having any chances against us.'

United started with a back-three but reverted to a more familiar 4-2-3-1 formation once Bailly went off.

Maguire, who was also cut in the collision, and Victor Lindelof are expected to play in central defence against West Ham. However, with Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe both sidelined due to injury, Timothy Fosu-Mensah and teenager Ethan Laird could be the back-up options.
