'In the last 35 to 40 minutes, we were the better side': Nemanja Matic insists Manchester United outperformed Liverpool during defeat at Anfield

* Midfielder Nemanja Matic insists they should have got something from the game

Nemanja Matic believes Manchester United were better than Liverpool during their 2-0 defeat at Anfield on Sunday.

Virgil van Dijk broke the deadlock in the first half before Mohamed Salah scored a second with the last kick of the game.

Anthony Martial had an excellent chance to equalise after the interval but blazed over and Matic insists they should have got something from the game.

Nemanja Matic believes Manchester United were better than Liverpool during Sunday's loss

The Serbia international told MUTV: 'On the pitch, we felt, "We are in the game, we can score, we can create".

'I think we played some good football. In the last 35 to 40 minutes, we were the better side.

'But it's hard. If you don't score against this kind of team it's hard to draw or to win.

'I think everyone on the pitch from our team felt that we were in control, completely in control, so that's the model of how we should always play against top teams.'

Liverpool had six shots on target during the match to United's five and the Reds had two goals disallowed.

Salah also missed a glaring chance in the six-yard box before Martial missed a sitter.

Default Re: Nemanja Matic

MATIC EXCLUSIVE: THE THREE POINTS ARE VITAL FOR US

Nemanja Matic has acknowledged the threat that Burnley pose, ahead of their visit to Old Trafford in the Premier League on Wednesday.

United defeated Sean Dyche’s side 2-0 at Turf Moor at the end of December and the 31-year-old midfielder fully expects another challenging match, with both sides determined to secure three invaluable points in the Premier League.

“I think we played a good game over there,” the experienced Matic explains in United Review, the official Manchester United matchday programme.

“Everyone knows that they are very dangerous, especially when they play at home, but we prepared for that game in the best way and we took three points, which was the most important thing.

“For sure, we will be focused again, we know they can be dangerous, but we play at our stadium in front of our supporters and we will do our best to get three points.

“Anything less than three points is not good for us, we must win.”

Burnley are currently 14th in the Premier League table, five points clear of the relegation zone, after earning an excellent 2-1 win over Leicester City at home on Sunday.

That was the Clarets' first win in five league games and Sean Dyche believes his side has turned a corner.

Matic expects a physical battle against a side which has recorded the second-highest number of long balls this season, after Sheffield United.

“Physically, they are very good,” says the Serbian, who has featured in each of United’s last seven matches in all competitions and started the recent win at Turf Moor.

“They are a strong team, all big guys, especially on set-pieces where they are very dangerous, and also with long balls and second balls.

“We know all that so we have to be fully focused in every situation and not allow them to have any chances.

“We’re focused on scoring some goals and taking three points, that’s the most important thing.”

Burnley have taken a point from each of their last three visits to Old Trafford, including a 2-2 draw in January 2019.

Matic played in that game - when Paul Pogba and Victor Lindelof scored late on to restore parity - and he sees patience and composure will be key to unlocking an often-resolute Clarets back four.

“It’s important to be patient and move the ball well, and in their half we need to be more clinical in front of goal.

“The manager has prepared us for this game, we know the way he wants us to play and we will follow that.”

This will be the ninth consecutive week in which United have played a midweek fixture, dating back to the end of November.

With the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Manchester City on the horizon next Wednesday, in between an Emirates FA Cup fourth-round tie and the visit of Wolves in the Premier League, Matic says the side must stay strong ahead of the winter break.

“In England it’s hard because we play every three days. But that’s why this league has the best players and you have to be ready for that.

“It’s not easy but we need to be mentally strong, prepared, and although this period is busy, at the beginning of February we will have time to rest.”

Default Re: Nemanja Matic

'It spoiled the game': Nemanja Matic should NOT have been sent off in Manchester United's Carabao Cup semi-final against Man City, claims Micah Richards as he insists it was 'pivotal' in the outcome of the match

* Manchester City made it past Mancester United in their Carabao Cup semi-final
* United had trailed 3-1 after the first leg before the return fixture at the Etihad
* Nemanja Matic made it 3-2 on aggregate but was then sent off late in the game
* Matic was sent off for two bookings, which the TV pundits thought were soft

Nemenja Matic's sending off was wrong and a major turning point in Manchester United's semi-final Carabao Cup exit, according to Micah Richards and Darren Fletcher.

Having trailed the first leg against Manchester City 3-1, Matic gave United a way back into the game when he scored in the 35th minute.

But with 14 minutes left to play, and United pushing for an equaliser, the 31-year-old was sent off for a second yellow card.

He had initially been booked for a foul on Riyad Mahrez and was dismissed when he committed a tactical foul by blocking Ilkay Gundogan.

Former United midfielder Fletcher felt referee Kevin Friend's decision to send Matic off was poor, particularly given he felt the midfielder hadn't made contact with Mahrez.

'I don’t think Matic should have been sent off,' Fletcher said. 'The first one is very harsh because he doesn’t make any contact.

Nemanja Matic was sent off for a second yellow card against Manchester City on Wednesday. Matic was dismissed when he was booked for blocking Manchester City's Ilkay Gundogan. Former City defender Micah Richards said he felt Matic's sending off was 'pivotal to the game'

'And the second one is clever from Gundogan, I don’t think there’s enough contact there and the referee’s bought it.'

Former City defender Richards felt it was a crucial moment which resulted in one of United's better performers being sent off, and suggested Friend didn't take into context the nature of the fixture.

He said: 'That moment was pivotal to the game. I thought Matic was brilliant today and I don’t think either of those should have been a yellow card. If you’re going to give fouls for that, every player is going to get booked every single week.

'It’s a derby, sometimes in these games you want to see challenges let go. It spoiled the game.'

* The 31-year-old is ready to commit his future to Manchester United
* His contract expires in the summer and there have been no talks on new deal

Nemanja Matic fears his Manchester United career will end this summer despite enjoying a recent renaissance.

The midfielder's contract expires at the end of the season although the club have the option to trigger a one-year extension.

The 31-year-old has started 10 of United's last 14 games, and scored the winner against Manchester City in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg on Wednesday.

Nemanja Matic is a free agent in the summer and says there has been no talks over a new deal

But Matic, a £40million buy from Chelsea in 2017, admits there has been no talks over a new deal.

He told The Sun: 'My first option is United but if they decide something else, there are solutions.

'And if not, life goes on. I can't tell who is asking for me.

'But when you play at United, many clubs are looking to sign you.'

Nemanja Matic 'to leave Manchester United when his contract expires in the summer'... but AC Milan have already said no to wage demands with Juventus and Inter Milan also keen

* Nemanja Matic's contract at Manchester United expires in the summer

* AC Milan turned him down but Juventus and Inter Milan are in the mix for him

Nemanja Matic will leave Manchester United in the summer when his contract expires, according to reports.

The midfielder has had a difficult season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, making just 22 appearances, although he has featured in all three of United's last matches in all competitions.

But Calcio Mercato are reporting that he is still expecting to leave at the end of the season with his contract set to run out.

His agents have already been offering him around to a series of clubs as a result of his impending departure.

The Serbian has been offered to three sides in Italy as they look to find a future for the 31-year-old.

AC Milan have already turned down the opportunity to bring him in as they have been put off by his €10million-a-year (£8.3m) salary.

Juventus are also in the mix, although they have delayed negotiations while they come up with their plans for the summer.

Inter Milan are also thought to be interested, despite bringing Christian Eriksen in during the January window, although they are unlikely to make a move.

United and Matic take on Club Brugge in the second leg of their Europa League first knockout round clash on Thursday night.

They will be looking for a result at Old Trafford, having drawn the first leg 1-1 last week.

Manchester United extend Nemanja Matic's contract by one year to keep midfielder at the club until 2021

* Nemanja Matic has had his Manchester United contract extended by a year
* The 31-year-old has rediscovered his best form since the turn of the year
* Talks are also ongoing between the club and midfielder over a longer deal

Manchester United have triggered a clause in Nemanja Matic's contract to extend his current deal by a year.

The midfielder had just over three months left on his contract but United have opted to extend his stay until at least 2021.

Matic had looked destined to leave United in the summer with several clubs around Europe, including Inter Milan, waiting to sign him on a free.

However, the Serbian has convinced boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that he still has a future at United, having rediscovered his best form since the turn of the year.

The 31-year-old has played an integral role in United's resurgence which had seen them close the gap on fourth-placed Chelsea before the Premier League season was suspended until April 3 due to the coronavirus crisis.

The club are exploring the possibility of handing the midfielder an even longer deal and talks are ongoing at the moment.

Manchester United have extended Nemanja Matic's contract to keep him at the club until 2021. Matic has convinced Ole Gunnar Solskjaer he has a future at United after returning to form

With uncertainty around how long the Premier League will be affected by the coronavirus pandemic, clubs are expected to try and secure players who are approaching the end of their contracts on new short-term deals.

The widespread postponement of leagues around the continent has raised the prospect of players' deals expiring before the end of their respective campaigns.

Chelsea are one club who could be significantly impacted with Willian, Olivier Giroud and Pedro's deals all ending in June.

Default Re: Nemanja Matic

WHY MATIC IS AN UNSUNG HERO FOR RESURGENT REDS
by Adam Marshal

Nemanja Matic is the sort of player who can sometimes go under the radar but the stats back up how influential he has been to the Manchester United cause.

The 31-year-old brings an air of calm experience to the side and he performed at a consistently high level after winning his place back in the side in December.

If some of his work is unheralded, such as shielding the defence, providing protection and an option in possession, keeping the ball with his upper body strength and displaying his ability in tight areas, his strike at Manchester City was enough to give us one of our derby wins and finally earned a degree of attention. Unfortunately, even this was overshadowed somewhat as it proved in vain with the Blues still winning on aggregate 3-2 and the midfielder was sent off for a second yellow card.

A look at United's results since the 4-0 win against AZ Alkmaar, his previous appearance had been in October against the same opposition, when we kept a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw, hint at Matic's importance to the side.

The Reds had 11 shut-outs in his 16 outings and even this impressive record deserves a little more scrutiny, as he only came on at half-time in the first-leg cup defeat to City, with the score at 0-3, and was crucial in helping to steady the ship as the Reds reduced the arrears and kept things alive for the second leg.

In the last 10 games he has started, we've scored 17 times and conceded only six goals.

So it is no wonder the club has exercised the option to extend his contract, due to expire in the summer, for another year, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer recently suggested.

Matic is also capable of starting attacks in the opposition half and keeping the ball moving. In our last Premier League fixture, the derby victory, he made more passes in City territory than any of his colleagues (22) and was a vital cog on a special day at Old Trafford.

Despite being known for his ability to sit in front of the defence and provide cover, he ran the furthest distance of all United players in the 1-1 draw at Everton this month, despite having the energetic Fred and Bruno Fernandes alongside him.

He also topped this chart, compiled by Opta, in the 3-0 success against Watford in February, and was joint-highest in terms of passes in the opposition half (with Bruno), to suggest there is more than meets the eye to his play.

It is clear that Solskjaer and Matic's colleagues greatly appreciate the contribution of somebody who has become an important member of the side.

Whenever football resumes, he will be determined to maintain this level of form and influence and should be a key performer as the Reds continue to gel under the boss and achieve our aims.

The opinions in this story are personal to the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Manchester United Football Club.

Default Re: Nemanja Matic

OLE: MATIC IN THE FORM OF HIS LIFE

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer paired Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba together for the first time for Manchester United, but it was Nemanja Matic who caught the manager’s eye in midfield against Sheffield United.

The Reds ran out 3-0 winners on our return to Old Trafford and January transfer window buy Fernandes and Pogba, who has been recovering from injury since the Portuguese's arrival, was the dream ticket Reds' fans were desperate to see as they came together for the first time in the engine room.

But Matic, who turns 32 in August, was key in the Reds' midfield triangle and has featured strongly in 2020.

“Nemanja is playing some of his best football. He’s had a good pre-season for the first time in many, many years and today he was dictating the game and his experience is vital for us,” said Ole in his post-match press conference.

“I’m very, very happy that we’re seeing the best of Nemanja and he’ll be important for us and then of course it’s down to performances and if Nemanja wants to stay but at the moment he’s in great form.”

Matic joined United from Chelsea in 2017 and his deal with the club was extended until 2021 in March.

The Serbian was delighted with the make-up of the United midfield against the Blades, with the Reds controlling the game from start to finish.

“It is always good to play with top players and we are lucky we have top players in every position. Tonight I played with Bruno and Paul and we did really well,” said the former Benfica man.

“It was a good formation and I am sure in the future we can improve a lot together also with Scott (McTominay) and Fred when they play with us.”

While United’s midfield was eye-catching it was Anthony Martial who grabbed the headlines with his first-ever professional hat trick.

“I am especially happy for Anthony scoring his first hat trick. It is very important for him to score goals,” said Nemanja.

“It is important for every striker for confidence. I am happy that our strikers are in good condition and for me Anthony was man of the match. He used almost every chance he had to score.

“Let us see in the future what he can do for us but I am happy for him and congratulations to him.”

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes Nemanja Matic is in the form of his life after helping Manchester United stroll to a 3-0 win over Sheffield United on Wednesday evening.

Matic was selected to hold the midfield behind Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes, starting together for the first time, and the trio controlled the Premier League encounter at Old Trafford which saw Anthony Martial net a hat-trick.

Solskjaer was left purring at his side's display and singled out Matic's performance as key as United continued their bid for Champions League qualification.
