The Chinese outfit began life in 1951 as East China before changing its name to Shanghai FC in 1957. It became one of China's first fully professional teams in 1993 when it took on sponsorship and the name of a local company Shenhua. Since then they've won two league titles and the Chinese FA Cup and finished league runners-up eight times.

What about this season?
Not great, to be frank. They made a shaky start under Frenchman Jean Tigana, who paid with his job for just two wins in the first seven games. They're currently in mid-table.

Who’s in the hot-seat?
This seat is particularly hot, as it happens. Argentinian Sergio Batista is the latest incumbent after Tigana's departure was followed by (very brief) caretaker spells for Nicolas Anelka and Jean-Florent Ikwange Ibenge.

Talk me through the team…
On paper it’s one of the most talented sides in the Chinese Super League, with several internationals and ex-Chelsea stars Nicolas Anelka and new signing Didier Drogba. Young keeper Wang Dalei is a good prospect between the sticks, right-back Wu Xi has been a stand-out performer this season with good energy and intelligence and the star box of tricks is a winger called Feng Renliang – watch out for his pace and delivery from either flank.

And the fans?
The Hongkou Football Stadium holds 35,000 but the locals rarely fill it for league games, although this game is being played at the larger Shanghai Stadium. Shenhua fans are a passionate lot, and with United having a long-established and fervent following in Shanghai, there should be a cracking atmosphere.

Carsten Jancker, the giant Bayern Munich striker who nearly gave all United fans a heart attack when he hit the bar in the 1999 Champions League final, had a spell at Shanghai in 2006. Anelka and Drogba both have plenty of history against the Reds - the Frenchman missed the last penalty in the shoot-out in Moscow at the 2008 Champions League final while the Ivory Coast captain hit the extra-time winner at Wembley in the 2007 FA Cup final.

Star player
Nicolas Anelka finds himself in a pretty fluid situation at Shenhua – one minute player/coach, the next back to star striker – and is one of a number of powerful personalities at the club, who will all need to pull in the same direction to take it forward. He's yet to set the Chinese Super League alight, despite scoring within a minute of his debut, but he'll doubtless offer a threat to United's backline.

“In 1999, Shenhua were managed for one season by Sebastiao Lazaroni, whose claim to fame was ending United's 40-year unbeaten record in Europe when in charge of Fenerbahçe in 1997.”

Shenhua captain Yu Tao: "We believe in ourselves and, of course, we want to win. When United arrive in Shanghai it will be pre-season for them and they will not be in their best condition, but we need to play at our best level. We’ve beaten AC Milan before, so we’ll keep learning and hope to produce another similar performance."

Ferdinand and Co receive heroes' welcome in Shanghai as they prepare to face the Drog

Manchester United have touched down in Shanghai as their globetrotting pre-season exploits continue.
Rio Ferdinand was a prominent figure at the airport in a red baseball cap which featured his Manchester United number on the front.

The defender referred to his self-styled #5 cap on Twitter earlier in July, saying 'Started making my own #5Caps as I won't be getting any more with England!'

He was obviously still smarting about his omission from Roy Hodgson's Euro 2012 squad, and indeed, the future does look bleak for Ferdinand at international level.

But United legend Bryan Robson, on tour with the side, paid tribute to the centre-back, who signed from Leeds United ten years ago.

'He has had a great career with the club,' Robson told the club website. 'There’s no reason why he shouldn’t last a lot longer.

'Rio is a naturally fit lad with no weight on him. He’s a good athlete. He’s been having a few problems with his back but the boss is good in the way he can nurse Rio through that side of it.

'As long as Rio has the desire to want to keep going, there’s no reason why he can’t play quite a few more years, especially being a centre-half.'

Next up for the Red Devils are Shanghai Shenhua, who boast old United enemy Didier Drogba in their armoury.

The Ivorian made an instant impact on his debut for the Chinese side, setting up his team's only goal in a 1-1 draw.

On Wednesday Shanghai will take on Sir Alex Ferguson's team - and the classic Premier League match-up of Ferdinand and Drogba - will take place in the Far East.
