25/11/2014 - ManUtd.com, Adam Marshall LSC: Blackburn 0 United Reserves 5 Manchester United's Reserves eased past Blackburn Rovers in the Lancashire Senior Cup quarter-final at Leigh Sports Village with a 5-0 victory. Jonny Evans, Ander Herrera and Adnan Januzaj all started in a powerful line-up selected by Warren Joyce and there was never any doubt about the outcome on a chilly night. Will Keane had already gone close when he opened the floodgates after quarter of an hour as in the in-form striker turned in Saidy Janko's right-wing cross at the near post. There was first-team quality stamped all over the second as Herrera swept in a right-footed shot following an intelligent set-piece by Januzaj. Januzaj and Herrera both tested Ryan Crump but Tom Thorpe and Anders Lindegaard had chances to impress at the other end due to some dangerous work by Chris Brown and Devarn Green, even if a third strike before the interval emphasised the gulf in class. The home side were undone when Andreas Pereira advanced to the edge of the box and unleashed a firm shot that proved too strong for Crump's right hand. Ben Pearson was unlucky to see a goalbound shot deflected and Januzaj was often keen to try his luck but substitute Joe Rothwell, on for the injured Josh Harrop, was next on the scoresheet. The midfielder played in Keane and, when the striker was tackled, he rammed the rebound in off the underside of the bar. Evans was withdrawn on 64 minutes as he pressed his claims for a return against Hull City at the weekend but the pattern of the game remained the same with the probing Reds asking constant questions of the Blackburn defence. The chances kept coming and Pearson mustered another deflected attempt that hit the woodwork as he sought his first goal of the campaign. It was doubtful Rothwell would be able to finish the game after sustaining a heavy knock but he was soon notching his second of the evening with a truly wonderful team goal. Pearson and Pereira were involved in the slick build-up and, when Pearson backheeled into his midfield pal's path, Rothwell bent home a beauty. Skipper Tom Thorpe was forced off with a serious-looking injury to leave United down to 10 men for the closing stages but Joyce's men march on to face Wigan Athletic in the semi-finals of the competition. United: Lindegaard; Janko (Grimshaw 68), Thorpe, J.Evans (Love 64), Vermijl; Januzaj, Pearson, A.Pereira, Herrera, Harrop (Rothwell 29); W.Keane. Subs not used: J.Pereira, Weir. 01/12/2014 - ManUtd.com, Adam Marshall U21s: Southampton 1 United 0 Manchester United slipped to only a second defeat of the Under-21 season as Southampton moved level on points with the Reds in the table. Jonny Evans played a full 90 minutes to step up his comeback, which is a huge plus point, but Ryan Seager ensured the goalless stalemate that had taken hold was ended with a late winner. Marnick Vermijl captained the side in the absence of Tom Thorpe with Donald Love partnering Evans in the middle but they were rarely threatened during a scrappy first half. Seager fired way over the top with the game's first attempt and was off target again following Love's header out. The only real save of the first half came when Will Keane, who held the ball up well throughout, turned to shoot at Paulo Gazzaniga in the 39th minute. United failed to test Gazzaniga again with Liam Grimshaw fluffing his effort from Keane's intelligent lay-off and James Weir, in for the ill Josh Harrop, lacking power in a shot that was easily fielded by the Argentinian keeper. The hosts knocked on the door as only an incredible goalline clearance by Evans saved his team after Seager got his head to a Sam McQueen cross. Omar Rowe pounced on the rebound but Amos saved smartly from close range. After Matt Targett shaved the bar with a free-kick, Amos could only watch as a Rowe curler struck an upright and bounced into his arms. There was a genuine penalty shout when Weir was felled by Jake Hesketh's reckless sliding tackle inside the area and Andreas Pereira wasted a promising set-piece after being fouled. But the late, unexpected sting in the tail was provided by the Saints as Seager showed his finishing prowess by firing past the exposed Amos. |

Manchester United U21 1-0 Southampton U21: Ashley Fletcher goal takes Warren Joyce's side back to the top of the league
* Manchester United went into the match second in the U21 Premier League * They knew they could go top with a win, overtaking Liverpool * United started the better of the two teams and hit the crossbar early on * Ashley Fletcher opened the scoring, with Phil Jones providing the assist * Jones, Adnan Januzaj and Tyler Blackett all lined up for United Under 21s * Despite Southampton pressure, United held on for the win in Leigh Ashley Fletcher scored the only goal of the game as Manchester United Under 21s moved back to the top of the U21 Premier League with a 1-0 win against Southampton on Bank Holiday Monday. Warren Joyce’s side went into the match needing to win to regain their place atop the league after Liverpool’s 2-1 victory against Leicester earlier in the day, and United did exactly what was asked of them. Phil Jones, Adnan Januzaj and Tyler Blackett were recruited to strengthen the side, with the former continuing his return from an injury suffered in mid-April. Phil Jones starting for Manchester United's Under 21s on Monday, and provided an assist for the only goal Adnan Januzaj, pictured posing with fans during United's last U21 match, again lined up for the youth side United started the better of the two sides, and almost took the lead inside three minutes when Fletcher rattled the crossbar from an Andreas Pereira cross. Fletcher did manage to get on the scoresheet minutes later though, when he chested down a brilliant long ball from Jones to rifle past Will Britt in the Saints goal. As Southampton struggled to get going, United continued to press but could not find a second goal. They could have done with doubling their lead, too; Chelsea are breathing down their necks in third place with a game in hand, and a win will take them level on points with a superior goal difference at the top of the table. In the second period at Leigh Sports Village, as Joyce’s men searched for another goal, it was the away side who came the closest to netting. With 20 Quote:
Seemingly, it was not Southampton’s night. They are struggling in the lower echelons of the league and find themselves just four places off the bottom, albeit with games in hand. The win for United takes their unbeaten run to seven matches, stretching back to February 2. They have won four and drawn three since a 2-1 home defeat by Fulham, and will run Chelsea close with just three games of the season remaining. Code:

Re: Man United U-21 Matches 2014/15
Manchester United U21 4-0 Manchester City U21: Adnan Januzaj and James Wilson shine as Red Devils move closer to title
* Manchester United now need just one point to clinch the title * James Wilson fired Manchester United into the lead early in the contest * Adnan Januzaj doubled United's advantage in the 52nd minute * Ashley Fletcher struck for United's third late in the second half * Substitute Matthew Willock curled in an unstoppable strike for the home side's fourth It has been a while since we have seen the flashes of brilliance from Adnan Januzaj which made him the talk of Old Trafford. On the back of some electrifying performances last season, the 20-year-old was handed the retiring Ryan Giggs's hallowed number 11 shirt and the world appeared to be at his tricky feet. If last year was his smash hit, this campaign has been his difficult second album and there is an increasing likelihood he may head out on loan in the summer. James Wilson fires Manchester United into an early lead following a superb through ball from Adnan Januzaj After dropping out of favour, Januzaj's last start was February's 3-1 win over Burnley in February. Only 96 precious minutes of Premier League action have followed. In this lively Under 21s derby, however, it took him just six minutes to make an impact. Cutting in from the flank deep inside his own half he lifted his head and spotted a pass nobody in Old Trafford saw; a 40-yard inch-perfect through ball for fellow senior player James Wilson. The 19-year-old striker, another to have fallen out of favour, has pace to burn and within seconds he had side-footed clinically past City keeper Angus Gunn. Neither player will enjoy the amount of space afforded to them here in the top flight but the goal was a timely reminded of their talents and Louis van Gaal would have been impressed - unlike Patrick Vieira. The City academy boss was furious that the goal was allowed to stand, believing Wilson was well offside, and the fourth official had to step in as he made his feelings abundantly clear to referee's assistant Elizabeth Sims. The Frenchman's emotions spread to the stands. In a bid to make the clash as close to a Premier League encounter as possible, United allowed fans in for free. They were rewarded with a healthy looking crowd of around 16,700 - complete with a segregated section of noisy City supporters. Both traded insults throughout a feisty first half which City dominated following Wilson's opener but could not find a way past Joel Periera. Quote:
United boss Warren Joyce, short of numbers in midfield thanks to injuries and the club's policy of loaning players out, was content to have his side sit back and hit their cross-town neighbours on the break and they did that to devastating affect when Joe Rothwell found Januzaj in space on the left. Gliding inside a retreating, panicking City defence as though it was 2013 again, he wasted little time in curling the second past Gunn's outstretched arms. His work done, on 73 minutes Joyce decided enough was enough and Januzaj departed to a heroes reception and headed up the tunnel Januzaj (left) showed great feet and control to fire in United's second goal of the night Crowd trouble erupts in the stands during the game as match stewards try to calm the situation Wilson, on the other hand, had no such respite and moments later found acres of space to cross for sub Ashley Fletcher to make it 3-0. That goal sparked a minor outbreak of trouble with punches thrown and a small number of fans thrown out. Seconds later Matthew Willock, on for the impressive Joe Rothwell, made it four with a curling effort from the edge of the box which went in off a post. The win means United's youngsters need just a point from their return match at City to lift the Under 21s title. Ashley Fletcher makes it 3-0 with a well-taken strike late in the second-half at Old Trafford Such a success will reflect the sterling job Joyce has performed in not ideal circumstances. Stripped of many of his best players for long chunks of the season he has somehow led his side to the verge of grabbing the only piece of silverware they will see at Old Trafford this season. Van Gaal, a wine connoisseur, famously treats all his staff as equals and celebrates success with everyone from the tea lady to the captain. Joyce may well find a nice bottle of red on his desk in the near future. Code:

Manchester United youngsters presented with the Barclays Premier League Under-21 League trophy prior to the first team's clash with Arsenal at Old Trafford
* Manchester United U21s presented with the league trophy at Old Trafford * The youngsters clinched the title after Chelsea U21s lost to West Ham * Tyler Blackett and James Wilson, who played against Manchester City, were named among the substitutes for the first teams clash with Arsenal Manchester United's first team may not have won any silverware this season but their Under 21 side made sure they gave the home fans something to cheer about after being presented with the Barclays Premier League Under 21 League trophy. Coached by Warren Joyce, the young side thrashed rivals Manchester City 4-0 in their last game but the title was decided after Chelsea were beaten by bottom-club West Ham United. Tyler Blackett and goal scorer from the derby, James Wilson, were at Old Trafford but were named among the substitutes for Louis van Gaal's side against Arsenal. Manchester United U21s celebrate with the trophy in front of a full house at Old Trafford The youngsters will be hoping this success will help them break through into Louis van Gaal's first team Captain Tom Thorpe lead the celebrations alongside Sadiq El Fitouri, James Weir, Sean Goss, Donald Love, Callum Evans, Ben Pearson, Kieran O'Hara, Andy Kellett, Ashley Fletcher, Saidy Janko, Matty Willock, Liam Grimshaw, Will Keane, Reece James, Joe Rothwell and Joel Pereira. It remains to be seen if any of the current crop of young players will be next to make the breakthrough into the Dutchman's first team squad. United lost only three games all season in the league and showed the first team how to win the title in style. Joyce's side still have one more game to play - away to rivals City - knowing they have the league sewn up. Captain Tom Thorpe (centre) walks off the Old Trafford pitch with the trophy to a rapturous applause The Under 21 coach praised his players on Friday, when speaking to ManUtd.com. He said: 'I know how much work we've put in over the season and regardless of the outcome now, we've had a fantastic campaign. 'There have been a lot of pluses and a lot of successes. We started the season off well by beating City in the final of the Manchester Senior Cup. That was a really good game and an experience in itself.' Code:
