Arguably United’s most versatile player, John O'Shea - who has made over 300 appearances - has played everywhere during his time at Old Trafford. But wherever he plays, United’s no.22 is happy to contribute to the team.

What’s more, the Irishman signed a contract in November 2007 that will keep him at the club until 2012. He said of his new deal: “It has never crossed my mind to leave. Luckily the club wanted me to stay and it was sorted out quickly.”

A shining example of selflessness and professionalism, John has been ever-willing in his service for United, ever since his first full season in 2002/03 when he was was a revelation at left-back. He raced up and down the wing, effortlessly picking the pockets of opponents who ran at him and cheekily nutmegging those who tried to stop him (remember Luis Figo?).

O'Shea has always been a footballing defender, blessed with beautiful balance, crisp passing and formidable upper-body strength, which enables him to slip effortlessly into midfield and anywhere across the back four.

In 2004/05 he played in all those positions, and in the following season he began to establish himself in the holding role in midfield – forming an unlikely but extremely effective partnership with Ryan Giggs that was the basis of United’s late-season surge. The Irish international continued where he'd left off at the start of the 2006/07 campaign, but soon had his chances limited by the burgeoning midfield partnership between Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick.

He still went on to make 49 appearances (including a cameo between the posts at White Hart Lane) and chipped in with five goals, the most memorable of which came in dramatic circumstances at Anfield as he swept home an injury-time winner in front of the Kop, a key goal in regaining the Premier League title.

More recently, O'Shea featured prominently as United's defence sent records tumbling during the 2008/09 campaign. The Irishman, started 11 games and made two substitute appearances as the Reds created a Premier League record of 14 successive clean sheets. John's reward for becoming a cornerstone of the defence was a starting berth in the Champions League final against Barcelona.

Manchester - Seiring absennya para pemain bertahan Manchester United, maka tugas berat bakal dijalani John O'Shea. Pemain asal Irlandia itu tidak mengeluh. Justru sebaliknya, ia merasa tugas-tugas itu merupakan hal yang istimewa.

Krisis di barisan belakang menjadi problem yang mendera MU di awal musim ini. Mulai dari kiper Edwin van der Sar, kemudian para bek yakni Gary Neville, Nemanja Vidic, Rafael da Silva, dan menyusul Rio Ferdinand, absen.

Hilangnya personel itu membuat sentral pertahanan kini bertumpu pada O'Shea. Tak hanya menghalau serangan lawan, namun pemain yang bergabung di 'Setan Merah' sejak tahun 1999 itu juga harus menjadi kapten tim, menggantikan posisi Ferdinand.

Sebuah tugas yang berat. Namun di mata O'Shea, kewajiban itu adalah sebuah kehormatan. "Ini sungguh spesial. Saya pernah jadi kapten di laga persahabatan. Menjadi kapten di pertandingan resmi, ini benar-benar bagus. Hal itu menunjukkan manajer selalu memiliki kepercayaan kepada saya," kata O'Shea kepada MUTV seperti dikutip dari Goal.

Pemain berkebangsaan Irlandia itu menjalani tugas pertama sebagai kapten dengan baik. MU mengatasi Birmingham 1-0 di laga perdana Liga Primer 2009/10. "Saya menikmati bermain dengan Jonny Evans di bek tengah. Kami sudah tahu satu sama lain, jadi lini belakang kami tidak ada masalah. Apalagi, di pertahanan terakhir ada Ben Foster, yang berpotensi menjadi kiper yang istimewa," lanjut pemain berusia 28 tahun itu.

Performa O'Shea mendapatkan apresiasi positif dari Sir Alex Ferguson. "Lihatlah apa yang John O'Shea berikan untuk tim. Ia bermain di berbagai posisi tanpa mengeluh sedikitpun," ujar sang manajer The Red Devils.

"Ia menerima semua tugas yang saya instruksikan. Ia memiliki pemahaman yang fantastis untuk apa yang saya tugaskan. Kami sangat beruntung memiliki pemain sepertinya," pungkas Ferguson.

skill mungkin gak istimewa.. kekuatan fisik juga biasa2 aja.. tapi cukup cerdas untuk bisa dimainkan dimana saja dan kapan saja... di saat2 krisis dalam tubuh skuad, figur semacam O'Shea ini malah krusial perannya...

John O'Shea was hugely satisfied with a goal on his 350th United appearance and paid tribute to its creator, Ryan Giggs, whose cameo second half display turned the game in United's favour.

It was the Welshman's right wing free-kick which O'Shea rose to head past Thomas Sorensen in the Stoke goal, having earlier set up Dimitar Berbatov to open the scoring.

"Giggsy's experience of taking up different positions and taking advantage of any gaps proved crucial," O'Shea told MUTV. "The great run he made for the first goal was him all over. The way he used his experience to get on the blind side of the defender was brilliant.

"I was really pleased to score especially against a team who are so strong on set pieces.

"It was a great ball in from Giggsy - I said to him I'd try and get across the keeper - and thankfully I was able to knock it in."

The victory was United's seventh on the trot in all competitions since the shock defeat at Burnley and, alongside Chelsea's loss at the DW Stadium, took them top of table. And O'Shea keeping that fine run going is the only thing on the players' minds.

"We knew we had to put a good run together after the Burnley defeat which was a freak result," he explained.

"We've always responded well to results like that with a great run of victories, but the games keep on coming and we've got to keep that run going."
