Boss: Anderson picks himself



Sir Alex has confirmed Anderson will start against West Ham United on Wednesday night.

But the boss is still without Nani and will wait until Tuesday afternoon to make a decision on fellow winger Antonio Valencia, who's nursing a hip injury. Paul Scholes is also unavailable due to suspension.

ManUtd.com users voted Anderson United's*Man of the Match following his performance against Queens Park Rangers on Saturday – a choice Sir Alex certainly doesn't disagree with.

"I thought Ando won the game for us," he told MUTV.

"His performance was outstanding. He took the game by the scruff of the neck and he was so positive and determined in his play that he picks himself on Wednesday.

"We'll see what Antonio is like today and tomorrow. Nani is still going to be out [but] Chris Smalling and Phil Jones were on the bench on Saturday and they're available.

"It's good to have them as back-up and in the back four things are much healthier. We've got plenty of options in the midfield and up front – it's just the two wide positions [where we have problems in terms of availability]."

Scholes suspended



Paul Scholes will sit out Manchester United’s game against West Ham on Wednesday after collecting his fifth booking of the season on Saturday.

Referee Lee Probert showed Scholes a yellow card for a late challenge on Queens Park Rangers midfielder Kieron Dyer early in the second half.

It followed earlier bookings this term in matches against Stoke City, Newcastle United, Liverpool and Everton. Now, in line with the Premier League’s disciplinary process, the 38-year-old must serve an immediate automatic one-game suspension.

Should any other United player pick up five bookings before 31 December, they will face the same fate.

It was the 95th yellow card Scholes has been shown in his Premier League career; only Kevin Davies and Lee Bowyer have collected more.

As well as having to do without Scholes against West Ham on Wednesday night, Sir Alex is also unlikely to be able to field Antonio Valencia. The Ecuadorian winger is currently sidelined with a hip injury.

Sir Alex praises Allardyce


Sir Alex Ferguson has praised Sam Allardyce ahead of Manchester United's clash with West Ham on Wednesday night, claiming the Hammers boss is "underrated" within football.

Allardyce has worked wonders since taking over at Upton Park in the summer of 2011, immediately winning promotion to the Barclays Premier League before making an assured start to life in the top flight this season, earning 19 points from 13 matches.

Such a performance has made a mockery of those who doubted whether the former Bolton Wanderers manager could succeed at West Ham, following two unsuccessful spells in charge of Newcastle United and Blackburn Rovers. Though as Sir Alex explained, his great friend and ally should never have been doubted.

“Big Sam went to Upton Park a year and a bit ago and the cynics said he’s not a West Ham manager as he doesn’t play football,”*the boss*said.*“What was his mandate? To get them up into the Premier League as quickly as possible and he got them up within a year. Tell me someone else who could’ve done that?

“He’s also had to rebuild the team and get two or three players out because of their salaries. He’s very underrated, it’s as simple as that. There’s a sort of impression about him being a certain type of manager. It’s not really fair and I’m pleased he’s back in the Premier League.

“The Blackburn situation was one of the craziest things I’ve ever seen but I think Sam was more disappointed with what happened at Newcastle. He was unlucky that a new owner came in and wanted a certain type of manager. He didn’t get a chance in his first really big job with the expectation and fan base up there - he didn’t get a chance to do the job right.”

West Ham come to Old Trafford on the back of a disappointing 3-1 defeat to Tottenham at White Hart Lane, where striker Andy Carroll grabbed some consolation by scoring his first goal since joining the Hammers on loan from Liverpool at the start of the season.

Of course, the England international has failed to live up to inflated expectations since moving to Anfield, where he had struggled to hold down a starting place under Kenny Dalglish before new boss Brendan Rodgers agreed a loan move to Upton Park.

Despite such perceived failure, Sir Alex is more than wary of the threat posed by Carroll and has predicted a difficult night for*United's defenders, though the boss admitted he'd never spend an estimated £35million on a player of such limited experience.

“I think it’s up to the boy to improve himself,” Sir Alex told. “I think he only played something like a dozen games for Newcastle and then he had to deal with a £35m transfer to a club like Liverpool when he’s young. It’s quite a big jump for him you know.

“I’d certainly not sign that kind of player for that kind of money. We’ve gambled on young players in the past, maybe a couple of million or whatever, but when you get that level - £35m – you really have to do a bit more homework and see how he is in his second season maybe.

“It’s not a lot of games that he’s had. He’s a big lad, a great header of the ball, aggressive and is a big bugger. You know he’ll be a handful for defenders for us on Wednesday.”
