A powerful United Under-18 side finished the league season on a high with a 5-0 demolition of Leeds at Carrington. Paul McGuinness' team showed the sort of form that has carried them all the way to the FA Youth Cup final with a perfect run-out ahead of the ties with Sheffield United. There were no red cards and didn't appear to be any injury scares, although two-goal Will Keane was withdrawn soon after grabbing the final strike. Tom Thorpe, Ryan Tunnicliffe and Gyliano van Velzen, with his first goal for the club, were also on the scoresheet while there was a debut at this level for keeper Jonny Sutherland and a return from injury for striker John Cofie. The Reds were too good for their rivals from across the Pennines and soon took the lead when Van Velzen's shot was tipped over by Alex Cairns and the corner was eventually nodded in by centre-back Thorpe. The inspirational Tunnicliffe doubled the advantage when his thumping free-kick curled around the wall and past Cairns for number two. Will Keane came close on a number of occasions before adding a third with a low drive after the break and there were congratulations from every player for Van Velzen when the Dutchman broke his goalscoring duck seconds after Cofie came off the bench. A sloppy backpass allowed Will Keane to nip in and poach his second to continue his fine run of form but Leeds at least kept the hosts out for the final 20 minutes or so and created chances of their own, without working Sam Johnstone or Sutherland enough in truth over the entire match. So the Reds finish fifth in their division but the fight for the most prestigious silverware in youth football now takes centre stage after this facile victory. United: Johnstone (Sutherland 60); M.Keane, Blackett, Thorpe, McGinty; Tunnicliffe, Pogba, Lingard, Morrison (Cofie 60), Van Velzen; W.Keane (Lawrence 70). Subs not used: Ekangamene, Leao. http://www.manutd.com/en/Players-And....aspx?pageNo=2

Re: United Academy Match
Tunnicliffe dan pogba..
Mereka bintangnya.... Manchester United youth gear up for Cup tilt May 16, 2011 MENMedia Football's increasingly global nature means Manchester United will approach the FA Youth Cup final with Sheffield United pledging to continue their worldwide search for talent. The likelihood is Paul McGuinness' side for Tuesday's first-leg duel at Bramall Lane will include representatives from Italy, Holland and France. Spanish World Cup winner Gerard Pique appeared in the competition for United in recent years, as did Giuseppe Rossi and Federico Macheda. And, given the glory Lionel Messi has helped Barcelona enjoy since arriving in Catalonia as a 13-year-old, it is clear operating purely within the boundaries of Greater Manchester is not an option. "It is a global game now," said United academy director Brian McClair, the former Scotland striker. "You only have to look at the number of people in the first team and where they come from. "When I first came down to England, if someone had told me what was going to happen, I would have said 'No chance'." That Pique and Rossi have gone on to enjoy success in the Primera Division raises the question of whether the strategy does pay dividends. Italian Macheda is another who appears destined to return home without realising his potential with the Reds. However, McClair feels the benefits are twofold. The most obvious is that you could unearth a rare talent which would save you millions in transfer fees. But of equal importance is the knowledge that the arrival of someone like Paul Pogba, the young United team's driving force in midfield, can present a challenge to established players that triggers further improvement. "Everybody at Manchester United has always appreciated and wanted local boys to come through," said McClair. "We are picking up boys from the age of seven and in the second leg of our semi-final with Chelsea, there were seven players who had been with us for 10 years. "That is the most pleasurable part of the job. "Those lads will challenge each other up to a certain level. "But we have to be on the lookout for one or two more. "Ryan Tunnicliffe has had a really good season. Is that because Paul Pogba is here?" United are favourites to secure a record 10th Youth Cup against a Blades outfit who have never previously reached the final.

FAYC: Sheff Utd 2 United 2 16/05/2011 13:23, Report by Adam Marshall United had to settle for a 2-2 draw in the first leg of the FA Youth Cup final at Sheffield United in front of almost 30,000 passionate fans in a fabulous advertisement for academy-level football. In front of the watching Sir Alex Ferguson, the Reds twice went in front - through Jesse Lingard, in dubious fashion, and Will Keane - only for the Blades to battle back courtesy of Callum McFadzean and Jordan Slew's powerful drives. A frenetic opening saw United win a free-kick inside the first 25 seconds and two corners before a minute and a half had elapsed. Despite the visitors' enterprising start, the Blades had the first attempt on goal when Corey Gregory headed over a cross from danger-man Slew. However, United looked the better side and Lingard had three chances inside a minute. The number seven, in the team in place of dead-leg victim Larnell Cole, was almost on the end of a cultured centre from Sean McGinty and then had a shot blocked from a Paul Pogba lay-off. Seconds later, another Pogba cross picked Lingard out and his shot cannoned off George Long and back against the midfielder before looping onto the bar. Harry Maguire appeared to use his hand to keep the bal out but, incredibly, referee Michael Oliver awarded the goal on the erroneous advice of his assistant Gary Beswick. The Blades would probably have preferred a goal to be given rather than a penalty and a red card for Maguire but the decision was baffling with even the goalscorer bemused. Maguire made a legitimate block on the line to keep out Ravel Morrison after the playmaker sped through to beat Long following a wonderful burst out of defence by Ryan Tunnicliffe. Morrison then teed up Michael Keane for a shot that worked Long but the hosts were also a threat in an entertaining half with Elliott Whitehouse's header superbly headed off the line by opposing skipper Tom Thorpe. After William Keane blazed well off target when displaying excellent control, United looked dangerous before a Morrison attack petered out on the edge of the box. John Pemberton's side broke swiftly through Whitehouse and, when McFadzean picked the ball up a long way out, he encroached on Sam Johnstone's goal and lashed a left-footed rocket past the keeper's outstretched right hand for a spectacular equaliser. It set things up nicely for the second half and the home side enjoyed more of the play after the break. Gyliano van Velzen's tricky run only produced a weak shot at Long and there was considerably more danger in the United box with Slew forcing a save out of Johnstone and Michele Fornasier hacking away when Whitehouse prodded the ball under the Reds keeper. But the teenagers from Manchester weathered the storm and started creating chances again. Morrison's run and low shot forced a fingertip stop out of Long, Michael Keane drilled wide and Will Keane had a goal rightly ruled out for offside against Pogba. It was Will Keane who did edge his team back in front by poaching a close-range effort following a fine move involving his brother Michael, Pogba and Lingard, who produced an excellent volleyed centre. The lead lasted only a couple of minutes as Slew produced a goal out of nothing, seeing his fierce drive deflect off Thorpe and beat Johnstone for an equaliser that delighted the home fans. Morrison was close to regaining the lead for a third time with five minutes left but, after his superb solo dribble through the defence, his finish was blocked by the highly-rated Long. Tunnicliffe had two late openings on the left-hand side of the box but was denied by Long and then fired off target in stoppage time and there was still time for one last opening for the elegant Morrison, who sportingly stayed on his feet rather than try and win a penalty, even though he appeared to be fouled. So it's back to Old Trafford next Monday for the decisive leg and, if it's half as exciting as this one, it will be well worth watching. United: Johnstone; M.Keane, McGinty, Thorpe, Fornasier; Lingard, Pogba, Tunnicliffe, Morrison, van Velzen (Cofie 75); W.Keane. |
