PREVIEW: UNITED V HUDDERSFIELD TOWN

Setting the scene:
The disappointing loss at Wembley Stadium in midweek ended our unbeaten run of eight games in the top flight and was only our fourth defeat of the campaign in all competitions. After a run of three successive away games, Jose Mourinho’s men are back on home soil for the first time since the 3-0 win over Stoke City on 15 January and will be determined to begin February with three points.

The plans to mark Munich: As this is the closest home match to the anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster, the club will mark the 60-year anniversary of the tragedy with a minute's silence before kick-off. The players will also wear black armbands and supporters will receive a special commemorative pack, which will include a copy of United Review and a commemorative book.

How can I follow the game? Saturday’s game will kick off at 15:00 GMT and will not be broadcast live on TV in the UK. Subscribers to MUTV can watch the build-up from 13:00 GMT on the Match Day show. Radio commentary of the game is also available, and the full game will be shown at midnight on Sunday.

What’s the team news? Marouane Fellaini must be considered a doubt after being substituted eight minutes after coming on against Spurs with what Jose Mourinho confirmed as another knee ligament injury. Otherwise, Eric Bailly and Zlatan Ibrahimovic are expected to be the only other absentees. Alexis Sanchez is set to make his home debut for the Reds, after featuring in the FA Cup win at Yeovil Town and Wednesday’s defeat at Spurs, while David De Gea is set to make his 300th appearance for the Reds in goal. The boss could provide a further update on his squad in his pre-match press conference on Friday. For Huddersfield, Congolese forward Elias Kachunga remains the only long-term injury absentee.

How have Huddersfield fared recently? After a great start to their first ever Premier League season, the Terriers have struggled of late and are without a win in their last seven league games since beating Watford 4-1 at Vicarage Road on 16 December. The only victory David Wagner’s men have enjoyed in their last nine games in all competitions was a 2-1 win at Championship side Bolton Wanderers in the FA Cup third round, and they come into this weekend’s game on the back of a 3-0 home defeat against Liverpool on Tuesday night. They currently sit just one point and one place above the bottom three.

We could meet again soon… Yes, the Reds could travel to West Yorkshire to face Huddersfield again on Saturday 17 February at 17:30 GMT in the fifth round of the FA Cup, if the Terriers beat Birmingham City away from home in a fourth-round replay next Tuesday.

What happened last time? United want to avenge the 2-1 defeat at the John Smith’s Stadium on 21 October, which ended our impressive unbeaten start to the campaign. Goals from Aaron Mooy and Laurent Depoitre in the first half sealed a surprise victory for the Premier League newcomers, with substitute Marcus Rashford’s fine header from a Romelu Lukaku cross late on proving only to be a consolation.

What's our record against them? United hold a slight historical edge going into this clash, having won 20 of the previous 46 encounters between the sides, with 15 draws and 11 Huddersfield victories. The defeat in Yorkshire earlier in the season came in our first meeting in more than 45 years – with the previous encounters between the teams coming in the 1971/72 campaign, when the Reds ran out 2-0 winners in the last Old Trafford clash courtesy of goals from George Best and Ian Storey-Moore.

Did you know? United have won 60 of the previous 76 Premier League games against newly-promoted teams at Old Trafford, drawing 11 and losing just five. The Reds have already beaten Newcastle 4-1 and Brighton 1-0 this season.

One to watch: Described as the ‘heartbeat’ of the Huddersfield side by his manager, Aaron Mooy has been a consistent performer for the Terriers and shown he has adapted to the rigours of the Premier League. The Australian midfielder has been an ever-present in the engine room, chipping in with four goals and two assists – including the opening goal in the victory over the Reds earlier in the season. The United midfield will have to keep close tabs on the 27-year-old, whose tigerish approach has earned him plenty of admirers this season.

Who’s the referee? Stuart Attwell will take charge of his fourth United match this weekend and his first since the Reds’ 3-1 League Cup win at Northampton in September 2016. The 35-year-old whistler from Warwickshire will oversee his 10th Premier League game of the season and will be assisted by Simon Long and Harry Lennard, while Mike Dean will be the fourth official.

Rivals Watch: There’s a full Premier League programme spread across three days this weekend...

Saturday 3 February (15:00 GMT unless stated)
Burnley v Manchester City (12:30 GMT)
Bournemouth v Stoke City
Brighton v West Ham United
Leicester City v Swansea City
Manchester United v Huddersfield Town
West Bromwich Albion v Southampton

Sunday 4 February

EARLY TEAM NEWS: UNITED V HUDDERSFIELD

Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Marouane Fellaini will miss Saturday’s Premier League clash against Huddersfield Town at Old Trafford, after the midfielder picked up a knee injury in the midweek 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

In an interview with MUTV at the Aon Training Complex earlier this afternoon, the manager identified Fellaini as the only new injury concern following the Spurs match, and said he feels "sorry" for the Belgian international.

“They [the medical team] are still working on it,” said Mourinho. “It's an injury and I feel sorry for him personally and I feel sorry for the team because he's an important player for us.

“I don’t have news because I don’t want to give you news based on the initial approach,” the boss continued in his press conference. "But I don’t think the news is very good. He has a problem in his knee – it’s the same knee [as previous injuries] but not the same location. It was internal, now it’s external, so let’s wait probably a couple more days, but of course he is out of the game tomorrow.

“It’s not an ACL [anterior cruciate ligament], it’s not a complete rupture of any structure of the knee, so we are not going as far as that. But we need him and the Champions League is arriving, we have lots of tough matches to play. Probably we are going to lose him for a few weeks, but I cannot say if it's two, three, four or five [weeks]. I cannot say at this moment.”

The news means that Fellaini joins long-term absentees Eric Bailly and Zlatan Ibrahimovic on the sidelines. However, Mourinho had more positive news on the latter pair, suggesting that they could return later this month.

“They are working on the pitch but not yet with us as a group so they are not very close to a return,” admitted the manager. "But I want to believe that by Champions League time, around the end of the month, they will be back.”

Saturday’s match against Huddersfield is the closest fixture to the 60th anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster, and Mourinho admitted it will be "a day to play well."

"I think it’s a day to bring happiness to bring joy," he said. "For people to be together enjoying the game and at the same time showing all the respect for the people and their families."

MANCHESTER UNITED 2 HUDDERSFIELD 0

Premier League | Old Trafford | Attendance: 74,742 | Scorers: Lukaku 55, Sanchez 68

United returned to winning ways with a much improved performance, after their midweek dip against Tottenham Hotspur, and it could easily have been a broader margin than the 2-0 result achieved with goals from Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez, the Chilean's first for the club.

The 60th anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster was commemorated with a perfectly observed minute’s silence before the start of the game. Remarkably, with more than 70,000 inside the ground, there wasn’t a sound.

This was the first League meeting at Old Trafford between United and the West Yorkshire side since Saturday 11 March 1972 but, of course, the corresponding fixture at the John Smith's Stadium ended in a shock 2-1 defeat.

Showing several changes, most notably Scott McTominay in for Paul Pogba, from Wednesday, United started the game at a brisk pace, while Huddersfield were clearly in a mood to take no prisoners.

The visitors used every tool in the box to try to prevent the ball from finding the net and were extremely fortunate not to concede a penalty when McTominay was flattened by Terence Kongolo's wild challenge inside the box. There was also a shout for a spot-kick when Alexis was felled on his home debut but, again, referee Stuart Attwell was unconvinced.

The Reds had certainly had their chances during the opening half, Jesse Lingard and Chris Smalling going close, but as half-time was reached, the scoresheet remained blank. United continued to have the lion’s share of possession and territorial advantage as the second half unfolded and it did feel like a goal was inevitable.

Chances came and went but, in the 55th minute, Huddersfield’s defence was finally breached. Juan Mata’s educated left foot provided the cross from the left wing, after more dogged work by Alexis, and Lukaku made no mistake in sweeping home a clinical left-footed finish.

It was no more than United deserved for all our dominance and, 13 minutes later, the lead was doubled when referee Attwell did point to the spot. Alexis was tripped by Town’s Michael Hefele and the Stretford End roared its approval when the new boy picked the ball up and took on the responsibility. The no.7's penalty was parried by keeper Jonas Lossi, but the Chilean followed up to claim his first goal in a United shirt.

This was a much better performance from Jose Mourinho’s lads but there were no further goals, despite several breaks involving substitutes Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford, and it was certainly given the seal of approval by the majority of the 74,742 crowd inside Old Trafford.

THE TEAMS

United: De Gea; Valencia, Smalling, Rojo, Shaw; McTominay, Matic; Mata (Rashford 71), Lingard (Pogba 65), Sanchez; Lukaku (Martial 76).

Substitutes not used: Romero, Lindelof, Young, Carrick.

Booked: Mata, Alexis

Huddersfield: Lossl; Smith, Zanka, Schindler (Hefele 59), Kongolo; Hogg, Quaner, Hadergjonaj, Billing (Mooy 33), Van La Parra (Ince 69); Depoitre.

Substitutes not used: Coleman, Malone, Pritchard, Mounie.

Booked: Billing, Smith, Hefele, Hogg.

WHAT'S NEXT?

United will hold a special service to mark the 60th anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster on Tuesday. Our next action is in the Premier League at Newcastle United on Sunday, with a 14:15 GMT kick-off.
