Default Re: Manchester United under Rangnick

Ralf Rangnick should focus on getting the best out of Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes - ahead of star man Cristiano Ronaldo - to secure a top four spot, claims Sky pundit Chris Kamara

* United are currently seventh in the Premier League - four points off fourth spot
* Midfield duo Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes have struggled so far this season
* Pogba is currently out injured while Fernandes cannot find the back of the net
* Yet Soccer Saturday icon Chris Kamara insists Ralf Rangnick should focus on the midfielders rather than Cristiano Ronaldo

Chris Kamara insists Manchester United interim boss Ralf Rangnick should focus on getting the best out of Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes to secure a top-four spot this season.

United are currently seventh in the Premier League and are four points off Arsenal in fourth spot, though do have a game in hand on the Gunners.

Yet after a festive period which saw United draw at Newcastle and lose at home to Wolves, former pro midfielder Kamara - who has made his name on Sky's Soccer Saturday - says Rangnick should not prioritise Cristiano Ronaldo in order for his team to succeed and should instead focus on Pogba and Fernandes.

Asked what United need to secure Champions League football next season, Kamara told The Express: 'I still think United need a central midfielder, or get Pogba back to his best and give him license to run the team.

Manchester United duo Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes have struggled so far this season. Chris Kamara says Ralf Rangnick should focus on getting the best out of Pogba and Fernandes. Cristiano Ronaldo arrived in August but Fernandes in particular has struggled for form since

'When he plays for France, Pogba is such a key player.

'Him and Fernandes playing at the top of their game would be incredible for Man Utd.

'Those two in central midfield would be as good as most teams have got and I think that's what they need.'

Fernandes has struggled this season since Ronaldo's arrival in late August, scoring just two goals in all competitions since an opening day hat-trick against Leeds.

Pogba, meanwhile, suffered an injury on international duty in November and is still 'four or five weeks away' from returning to training, according to Rangnick.

After beating Aston Villa in the FA Cup on Monday night, United this time travel to Villa Park to take on Steven Gerrard's side in the Premier League on Saturday.

Paul Scholes says Manchester United are a 'MESS' with a 'POISONOUS' dressing room and insists he was 'astonished' that Ralf Rangnick was hired... but thinks club could STILL lure Antonio Conte

* Paul Scholes has slammed the situation at Ralf Rangnick's Manchester United
* The ex-United midfielder believes United are 'a mess' with a 'poisonous' mood
* Scholes has also questioned the club over picking Rangnick as interim boss
* Legend insists Antonio Conte or Mauricio Pochettino are better manager picks

Paul Scholes has described the situation at Manchester United as 'a mess' and 'poisonous' as he questioned the club's decision to install Ralf Rangnick as interim manager.

Scholes believes United should have moved for Antonio Conte before he joined Tottenham or pushed harder for Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino rather than opting for Rangnick.

'The club just feels it's in a mess - player wise, staff wise, manager wise,' said the former Old Trafford favourite.

'Manchester United is the biggest and the best. United should have the best available in the most important roles, and the most important role is the manager - it has to be.

Paul Scholes has described the situation at Manchester United as 'poisonous' and 'a mess'. Former United midfielder Scholes has questioned Ralf Rangnick's credentials as interim boss

'We've gone to a man who is well regarded across Europe, but he hasn't really had that much success as a coach.

'He's been asked to come and manage the biggest club in the world. It's something I can't get my head around.

'Manchester United should have the best available out there employed as their manager and they haven't got that, which I find astonishing.

'It should be one of the top five managers in the world. Tuchel, Klopp, Guardiola, no chance you can get them. But Antonio Conte? The timing looked ideal.

'You've seen what he's done at Tottenham with a squad that is nowhere near as good as United's. I think United missed a trick with him. I think they could probably still get him from Tottenham. I think he could do something special here.

Scholes says it is 'astonishing' that Rangnick was given the job after not 'that much success'. Scholes also claims Antonio Conte would have been an 'ideal' pick as boss given the timing

'Then you've got Pochettino with PSG. You can understand why they won't let him go, but United are United. If they want a manager that badly, just go and get him.

'I don't think we'll find out how many winners we have in this team until we find a proper top-class elite manager.'

Asked about possible January signings amid talk of dressing-room unrest, Scholes added: 'It does feel poisonous. It feels like people are looking to get out rather than come in.'

'Throw those bad eggs out the club!' Rio Ferdinand demands Man United players leaking stories of dressing room disharmony are booted out as Ralf Rangnick battles to raise morale during a miserable season

* Manchester United have struggled in recent weeks amid report of low morale
* Interim manager Ralf Rangnick is fighting to keep fractured squad together
* Club legend Rio Ferdinand has called for the leakers to be kicked out the squad
* Ex-defender blames the club hierarchy for not getting to grips with 'bad eggs'

Rio Ferdinand has demanded any players leaking out stories of divisions in the Manchester United dressing room be booted out the club.

With Ralf Rangnick struggling to turn around United's miserable season, revelations of low morale and disharmony within the squad have been rife in recent weeks.

This has translated into a series of mediocre performances on the field, with several players showing negative body language and those who aren't playing regularly openly questioning why.

Though United fortuitously progressed to the fourth round of the FA Cup by beating Aston Villa on Monday night, they face an uphill struggle to achieve a top four finish in the Premier League.

And club legend Ferdinand, speaking on his Vibe with Five YouTube show, has called on the 'bad eggs' to be turfed out immediately.

He said: You're going to get players who are going to be bad eggs and if they don't play, they want to make it uncomfortable for everyone and want to come in and change the atmosphere in the dressing room.

'They will be a bit aloof, not saying "hello" to people, not being punctual. Those players - get out.

Manchester United may have beaten Aston Villa in the FA Cup but reports of a fractured dressing room and low morale in the squad refuse to go away. Club legend Rio Ferdinand has demanded those players upsetting the harmony in the dressing room by leaking out stories to be booted out the club

'You go to the manager and you tell the manager: "That geezer, he's a disgrace in our changing room, he's ruining it and he's going to get beat up at some point."'

Former defender Ferdinand laid the blame at the door of the United hierarchy, who have failed to act decisively to rid the dressing room of malign influences.

He added: 'Man United's biggest mistake in recent years is allowing certain players and certain people externally, who are part of some players' circles and networks, to disrespect the club publicly.

'They haven't slammed the door shut in their face and really put those people in the place they should be. You can't allow that.

'The minute you allow that once, allow someone to step out of line, then other people in those people's circles start to think, "well, he got away with it so I'll say my thing now. I don't mind leaking because there's no repercussions and I won't come under any kind of fire at the club because of that."

United's interim coach Rangnick has been fighting to keep the team on track in recent weeks. High profile players like Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo have been criticised for their negative body language during recent matches. United's players have been described as a 'bunch of whingebags' with morale on the floor. Ferdinand has blamed the United hierarchy for not getting a grip on malign influences

'No, you nail that person immediately and that's the mistake the hierarchy at the football club in recent years have done poorly.

'They have let stuff slide too much, they have got to be drilled those people.'

United host Aston Villa again this Saturday in the Premier League as they aim to bridge the four-point gap between themselves in seventh position and Arsenal in fourth.

Sportsmail reported last week that German coach Rangnick has already conceded defeat in trying to resolve all of United's myriad problems on and off the field.

But he has at least moved away from his default 4-2-2-2 formation that wasn't suited to United's players, reverting to the 4-2-3-1 shape seen under former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Cristiano Ronaldo insists that interim boss Ralf Rangnick 'will do a good job' at Man United but needs more time as the superstar claims the Red Devils will not achieve top four with the wrong attitude

* Ralf Rangnick took charge at Man United after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's dismissal
* But the interim boss will only manage the Red Devils until the end of the season
* The German fears he does not have the time or influence to fix the club's issues
* But Cristiano Ronaldo has insisted that the 63-year-old can do a good job

Cristiano Ronaldo believes that Ralf Rangnick can do a good job at Old Trafford but insisted that the Manchester United interim boss needs more time.

The German was brought in by the Red Devils until the end of the season after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked following a run of humiliating results in November.

But the 63-year-old admitted he fears he does not have the time or influence to solve the club’s troubles before his job as interim manager ends in May.

Rangnick faces a toxic atmosphere at Old Trafford with morale low as up to half the squad want to leave, the dressing room divided into cliques, and below-par performances on the pitch leaving United seventh in the Premier League.

But Ronaldo believes the interim boss can turn the situation around but he needs more time to get his ideas across to the players.

'Since he arrived five weeks ago he changed many things,' Ronaldo told Sky Sports. 'But he needs time to put his ideas across to the players.

Cristiano Ronaldo believes Ralf Rangnick can do a good job at Man United. Rangnick admitted he fears he does not have the time or influence to solve the club’s troubles. The Portugal international believes United must change their attitude to achieve top four

'It takes time but I believe that he is going to do a good job. We know we aren't playing the best football but we have many games to improve.

'Since he arrived I think in some points we are better, but he needs time. It's not that easy to change the mentality of players and the way they play, the culture, the system like that. I believe that he is going to do a good job.'

'We have to be together. We're in the same boat. We have to believe that it is possible but like I said we have a long way to go.'

The Portugal international also admitted that it had been a difficult couple of months in the wake of Solskjaer's dismissal as Michael Carrick took charge as caretaker manager before Rangnick stepped in.

'Not easy to be honest. We changed Ole, then [Michael] Carrick [caretaker manager], then this new coach. It's difficult when you change so much, it's always tough,' said Ronaldo.

'It's always sad and tough. Ole used to play with me before and now he was the coach. A fantastic person. When he left everybody was sad, but it's part of football.

'When things don't go the way the club wants, the club has to change. I was disappointed but we have to understand the club. It was difficult but life continues.

'But I still believe that we are capable of doing a good season. We know it's going to take time to make the ideas of the new coach on the pitch.

'But I'm looking forward. We have to work hard, we have to be together as players. We know we are not in the best moment, but I believe with working hard we can achieve important things, even this year.'

The 36-year-old insisted that he was at the club to win and would not settle for fifth or sixth but admitted that achieving top four without the right mentality was impossible.

When asked whether United could hope to close the gap on their top-four rivals without the correct mentality, Ronaldo said: 'Impossible - I think it's the main point.

'I don't accept that our mentality be less than being in the top three in the Premier League.

'I think to build up good things, sometimes you have to destroy a few things. So why not - new year, new life and I hope that Manchester (United) can be the level that the fans want. They deserve that.

'We are capable of changing things now. I know the way but I'm not going to mention it here because I don't think it's ethical on my part to say that.

'What I can say is we can do better - all of us. Manchester (United) belongs to important things, so we have to change that.

'I don't want to be here to be in sixth place, or seventh place, or fifth place. I'm here to try to win, to compete.

'I think we compete but we are not yet in our best level. But we have a long way to improve and I believe if we change our mind, we can achieve big things.'

Former Manchester United defender Mikael Silvestre says it's too early to judge Ralf Rangnick after 'mini crisis' in terms of results... while he claims it 'won't be easy' to attract PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino to Old Trafford

* Ralf Rangnick has had a disappointing start as interim at Manchester United
* Mikael Silvestre believes Rangnick needs more time to implement his style
* Mauricio Pochettino is one of the most strongly linked with the role permanently
* Silvestre says it could be difficult to attract Pochettino from Paris Saint-Germain

Former Manchester United defender Mikael Silvestre says it's too early to judge interim boss Ralf Rangnick despite a disappointing start to life at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils have won just three out of six Premier League games since the German took over the role, and he has struggled to implement his style on United's squad.

United are languishing down in seventh place and are already 22 points off runaway leaders Manchester City.

Silvestre, who played for United from 1999 to 2008, has stated that Rangnick needs more time to turn things around.

He told Slingo Casino: 'United's form is worrying but it's too early to judge Rangnick

'It's hard to come in as the fireman. It's been a mini crisis at United in terms of results and he needs more time to implement his ideas.

'He also needs to have everybody fit again. It's too early to judge. From what we can witness the players are supportive when they talk about the manager, so that's good.'

Ralf Rangnick has struggled to implement his style at Manchester United since his arrival. Former United defender Mikael Silvestre says that it's too early to judge Rangnick. Mauricio Pochettino is one of the favourites to take on the permanent role at Old Trafford

Rangnick is only holding the role on an interim basis until the end of a season with a new permanent manager expected to come in during the summer.

One named strongly linked with the role is Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino.

Silvestre though feels it could be difficult to attract Pochettino to make the move back to the Premier League.

The Frenchman said: 'Pochettino is a strong candidate for the United job but attracting him won't be easy

'Pochettino knows the Premier League, he almost won the Champions League and he did a good job at Southampton and Spurs. He is under contract at PSG, so it's not an easy one.

'He could be one candidate on the shortlist, but all the top names are currently employed. It's a difficult one for the ownership to find the right manager.'

This season, United are in the battle for the Champions League places along with West Ham, Tottenham and Arsenal.

Though hopeful Rangnick can turn things around, Silvestre admits he's not confident they can obtain a top four finish.

He said: 'As much as I was confident of top four last season I'm not really at the moment.

'When I see that we haven't been controlling games for 90 minutes, that's a worry. Arsenal are in good form and West Ham are overperforming. It will be difficult but with that squad it's still possible.'

Ralf Rangnick admits he's still 'not quite happy' with Man United's work in possession after watching them scrape all three points against West Ham thanks to Marcus Rashford's injury-time winner

* Man United's Ralf Rangnick was satisfied with his defence against West Ham
* But he says his side could do better both in possession and in the final third
* The win against the Hammers sees United go fourth for first time since October

Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick was complimentary of his defence in the win over West Ham but admitted there is still room for improvement.

United made it two wins in three days as Marcus Rashford's injury time winner ensured Rangnick's men overtook their opponents into fourth spot.

The 63-year-old was happy with the win but felt his team could have done better to gain control of the game despite their strong defensive performance.

When asked if it was the most controlled performance of his reign, he told MUTV: ‘Well defensively I would say yes, because from normal play we didn’t allow them too many chances.

Ralf Rangnick feels his team could do better despite their win against West Ham on Saturday. Marcus Rashford grabbed an injury time winner to take United up to fourth in the league

‘And as I said, it was not easy against them, they are a very physical team.

‘But I am still not quite happy with the way that we play in possession of the ball, so this will have to be the next steps in the next couple of weeks that we also find better solutions in possession of the ball.’

Rangnick felt his team need to be patient in the final third. He told BBC Match of The Day: ‘We didn’t always find the best solutions in the final third.

‘In the last 20 minutes we had too many shots on goal when there was no realistic chance to score. We needed to be a bit more patient, but in the end it was about taking all three points.'

Speaking about his defence again, Rangnick added: ‘As I said, we didn’t allow them [many chances], I can only remember one good chance they had after the corner kick five minutes from time.

‘But from normal play, from normal build-up, I don’t remember any situations. We had I think two or three good ones, especially with Fred, the header from Cristiano in the first half. But it was a very competitive and very disciplined game.’

The win against the Hammers sees United enter the Champions League spots for the first time in three months and they'll take-on Middlesborough in the fourth Round of the FA Cup on Friday.

Default Re: Manchester United under Rangnick

Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick admits Mason Greenwood's arrest and suspension WAS a factor in the club blocking Jesse Lingard from leaving on transfer deadline day, as he hands the midfielder extra time off to 'clear his head'

* Jesse Lingard failed to secure a loan move from Man United on deadline day
* He wasn't allowed to leave despite offers from Newcastle United and West Ham
* Interim coach Ralf Rangnick has admitted Mason Greenwood arrest was a factor
* Greenwood was released on bail pending further investigation on Wednesday
* Forward remains suspended by United and will not play or train with them
* Lingard was given a couple of days off to 'clear his head' after move collapsed

Ralf Rangnick has admitted that Mason Greenwood's arrest influenced Manchester United's decision to keep Jesse Lingard at Old Trafford beyond the January transfer window.

United reiterated on Thursday that Greenwood will not play for the club or train until further notice despite his release on bail pending further investigation after he was arrested on suspicion of rape, sexual assault and threats to kill.

Rangnick confirmed that the situation with the 20-year-old England forward impacted on Lingard's hopes of leaving United on loan for the rest of the season after the club rejected offers from Newcastle and West Ham on deadline day.

Jesse Lingard was kept by Manchester United on deadline day despite widespread interest. Police have bailed Mason Greenwood after arresting him on suspicion of rape, assault, sexual assault and threats to kill a young woman, 18. United's interim manager Ralf Rangnick admitted the Greenwood situation was a factor in the decision to keep hold of Lingard on deadline day

'Yes, in a way,' said United's interim manager. 'It was two things: one thing was obviously that we had a problem with Mason Greenwood and being without a player for the time being who has played regularly in the last couple of weeks.

'On the other hand, the club couldn't find an agreement with any other club (for Lingard).

'The board told me they couldn't find an agreement with any clubs interested in him.

'With the window closing on Monday evening, the board informed me they would rather he stay and that is something I fully understand.'

On Lingard's desire to leave United after 21 years for the final six months of his contract before becoming a free agent in the summer, Rangnick added: 'Three weeks ago, Jesse didn't want to leave, then he changed his mind.

'I had a chat with him 10 days ago and I could fully understand why he wanted to leave to get game time for his future and the World Cup.

'I told him if he finds a club and the club find a solution with our club I would allow him to leave. In the last couple of days things changed a little bit.

'We also had no agreement with any other club so we had to take a final decision as the board and keep Jesse until the end of the season.'

Rangnick insisted that United's training has gone well ahead of Friday night's FA Cup tie at home to Middlesbrough despite the distraction of Greenwood's arrest.

'In fact, we had a good normal week of training with five sessions including today,' he said. 'Obviously it was a topic within the team.

Rangnick said United's training sessions have been 'normal' despite the Greenwood news

'They're human beings and Mason was part of the group before we had our break. But we could train under normal circumstances and we are looking forward to the game tomorrow.'

Greenwood's absence means United's squad has been further depleted after Anthony Martial, Donny van de Beek and Amad Diallo were allowed out on loan.

However, Rangnick is happy with the players at his disposal despite not bringing in any new signings during the window.

'The group was slightly too big,' he said. 'We had too many players not seeing the chance to get regular playing time. This is why I'm happy for the club and also the players.

'Donny, Anthony and Amad deserve regular game time, I wish them all the best. Amad has already played and scored in his first game (for Rangers).

'I'm pretty sure Anthony and Donny will do well at Sevilla and Everton, and come back in the summer in good form.'

Rangnick confirmed that Paul Pogba will be in the squad against Boro and could start his first game for three months following a thigh injury.

Lingard has been given a few days off to 'clear his mind' and Edinson Cavani has also asked to delay his return from Uruguay.

Victor Lindelof has been ill, Eric Bailly returned from the Africa Cup of Nations with an ankle injury, and Luke Shaw will return at left-back because Alex Telles played 90 minutes of Brazil's World Cup qualifier against Paraguay on Wednesday.

'Paul will be part of the group he might even be in the starting XI,' said Rangnick.

'Edi Cavani will only return at the weekend. He contacted me to ask if he could have two more days at home. He won't be part of the group.

'Lindelof has been ill the whole week and hasn't trained. Same with Jesse, he asked to have a few days off to clear his mind. He will be back next week and part of the whole squad again.

'Eric Bailly came back yesterday and has a swollen ankle so won't be part of the squad. Luke will be playing because Alex Telles played 90 minutes for Brazil.'

WHERE WILL POGBA PLAY UNDER RANGNICK?

Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick is excited by the prospect of Paul Pogba's welcome return from injury.

The France international is fit again after suffering a thigh problem while away with his country in November.

After stepping up his training at Carrington, he is in line to feature against Middlesbrough in Friday night's Emirates FA Cup tie at Old Trafford.

The question for many fans is where will Pogba operate within Rangnick's preferred formation and system?

“I think he’s definitely ready for tomorrow and, since Fred only came back yesterday with jet-lag, as he played for Brazil, for me, it is quite logical to let Paul play," explained the boss to club media's Stewart Gardner. "To see how he is doing and what kind of level he can play.

“What I’ve seen in training is promising and now it’s up to him to show up on the big pitch, in the big competitions we’re still in. Like everybody, I’m very excited by what he can give to the team and which kind of level he can play.

The German added: “What I’ve seen so far, with regard to his physique, his physical presence, the technical assets he has, I think his best position is a central midfield position. I don’t see him that much as a winger.

“By saying that, I wouldn’t say he cannot at all play that position. But we have quite a few players for the winger position right now. I see his best possible position as central midfield, if it’s a no.6 or an 8, I have to see. I haven’t seen him play so far. If you ask me right now, probably the no.8 position."

In a separate interview with journalists, Rangnick reiterated the level of expectancy around the return of the World Cup winner.

"I will be excited myself to see how Paul is doing and, like all the other players, for me, he is now a new player," he stated. "He can show me and the team and the fans and everybody in England how good and at what kind of level he can play. We shall wait and see what he can deliver."

Pogba scored a dramatic late winner against Boro on New Year's Eve in 2016, earning a 2-1 triumph for the Reds at Old Trafford. The midfielder will be hoping for a similar impact against the Championship side in Friday's 20:00 GMT kick-off, as Rangnick's men look to reach round five of the FA Cup.

Manchester United players are 'SCARED' of Cristiano Ronaldo according to Dietmar Hamann... as the ex-Liverpool man slams the Red Devils for not 'pulling in the same direction'

* Dietmar Hamann said Cristiano Ronaldo is having a negative impact at Man Utd
* The former Liverpool midfielder believes players are scared of the Portuguese
* Ronaldo is being blamed more and more often for United's struggles this season
* Hamann also said the team had no identity and said players were not uniting

The presence of Cristiano Ronaldo is unnerving players at Manchester United, Dietmar Hamann has said.

Ronaldo got off to a flying start on his return to United after 12 years away, scoring twice on his debut against Newcastle and then in his next two games against Young Boys and West Ham.

His second coming led to a carnival atmosphere at Old Trafford but as the team began to struggle and pressure mounted on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, there was a growing sense that Ronaldo was in fact holding the team back rather than driving them forward.

And Hamann believes that is the case.

‘There’s question marks over Ronaldo and whether he hinders the team and whether people are actually scared of him,' Hamann told Metro.

Hamann, who spent a decade at United's two biggest rivals, with seven years at Liverpool and three with Manchester City, laid into Ralf Rangnick's side and appeared to suggest the German has not done enough since succeeding Solskjaer in December.

‘I don’t think there’s an identity to this United team which makes it difficult for a player to come into,' added the German.

‘Someone needs to make sure these players pull in the same direction which isn’t the case right now.

Hamann also suggested the environment at United is unwelcoming to new arrivals or youngsters such as Jadon Sancho, who has flopped in his first season since joining the club from Borussia Dortmund.

Cristiano Ronaldo is unsettling players at Man United, according to Dietmar Hamann. Hamann said there were question marks over Ronaldo and whether players were scared of him. Ronaldo began his second coming at United on the front foot but hasn't scored for five games. Hamann said he thought United was not a tough place to go for new signing Jadon Sancho

‘I think at the moment, the environment Manchester United have is not helping him [Sancho] one bit, Hamann said.

‘It doesn’t look a good environment to work in and as a new player it’s never easy to perform from day one.

‘They paid an awful lot of money for Sancho, and I think they’d struggle to recoup that, so he’ll be here for the long term.

‘Hopefully he can start to play better than he has done so far.’

‘He should know the way the Premier League is having come through Manchester City’s academy, but I am surprised he’s struggled this much so far.

‘But you could say that about most of the team, they don’t look like a side who pulls together, and a manager has to try to come in and sort that out.'

'This needs to be nipped in the bud': Paul Merson urges Manchester United to SACK Ralf Rangnick - and says he'd be 'shocked' if he moved 'upstairs' at the end of the season too, with Red Devils continuing to struggle under the German's guidance

* Paul Merson has urged Manchester United to part ways with Ralf Rangnick
* The pundit says Rangnick should not take consultancy role as currently planned
* Red Devils have failed to win last three games and slip further from top four
* As it stands, Rangnick will take on a consultancy role at the end of the season

Pundit Paul Merson has urged Manchester United to part ways with Ralf Rangnick, as the Red Devils slip further away from a Champions League position.

The German boss has come under fire in recent weeks, with the Red Devils putting in a number of underwhelming performances - including an FA Cup defeat at Old Trafford to Championship side Middlesbrough.

As the pressure continues to rise on the former Leipzig manager, pundits have gotten involved and urged United to find a replacement sooner rather than later.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Merson said: 'One-hundred per cent [Rangnick won’t be in charge of Man Utd next season]. I’ve got as much chance of being in charge. I just don’t see it.

Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick has come under fire after a string of poor results. Pundit Paul Merson says he doesn't think Rangnick should take on consultancy role next year

‘I read something that said they have improved. I don’t see that. I don’t see the happiness there. I hear so much coming out of Man Utd, at the moment, which is just extraordinary. It never happened before and that’s my worry.

‘I don’t see him being there and the way it is going at the moment, if they don’t get in the top four, I’d be shocked if he went upstairs. I know that was part of the deal, but I don’t think it’s a good thing. I think this needs to be nipped in the bud sooner rather than later at Manchester United.

The former Arsenal player went on to argue that club's should be willing to pay a fee to obtain a manager, similar to how clubs pay for players.

Merson said: ‘I just can’t believe what they are doing. Just waiting until next season to bring in a new manager, there is a lot of work to be done. This is not just bringing a new manager in and let’s go again next season. They are a million miles off and things have to change very quickly.

‘I’d have had someone in as soon as possible. You pay £70m to £80m for football players and some of them don’t even play. Why wouldn’t you break the bank for managers, if you need to get a manager out of a club. In my opinion, they are very important.
