Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick does not buy into the theory that his own game is better suited to playing in the UEFA Champions League.

Carrick has not always been a fans' favourite at Old Trafford and has often struggled for a perceived lack of consistency in the United midfield.

He has impressed in the Red Devils' recent European wins over Chelsea and Schalke, but was unable to stamp his authority on the 1-0 Premier League defeat by Arsenal on Sunday.

However, ahead of the return meeting with Schalke on Wednesday evening, the England international is confident he can adapt his game to suit any competition.

"I don't really think that," said Carrick regarding claims his measured approach is better suited to the Champions League."You just adjust your game. It is slightly different but, as a squad, we show good variety in our play and adapt pretty well."

United boast a 2-0 lead over Schalke from the first leg, but Carrick insists the players are not taking a Wembley final appearance on 28th May for granted.

The 29-year-old said: "It does come into your mind the fact you are two goals up, but it is dangerous to go into a game relying on those two goals to get you through.

"The focus is to approach the game as normal and to try and win the game. Clearly, Schalke scoring five goals at Inter stands out and is something you have to take into account.

"We were well aware of it last week and knew all about their strengths and weaknesses. But we have been playing some good stuff at home and we will have to be at the top of our game again to get the right result."

Inggris memulangkan Michael Carrick ke klubnya Manchester United dan memastikan pemain berposisi gelandang itu bakal absen untuk laga kualifkasi Piala Eropa 2012 melawan Swiss.

Hal itu tak lepas dari cedera yang dialami Carrick, setidaknya demikian menurut Federasi Sepakbola Inggris, FA.

"Gelandang United melaporkan diri pada Senin sore dan tak bisa berlatih untuk dua hari pertama," jelas FA.

"Carrick sudah kembali ke klubnya dan tidak akan ada pemain pengganti yang dipanggil untuk mengisi tempatnya."

Selain Carrick, Inggris juga sudah kehilangan Jermain Defoe dan kiper David Stockdale. Sedangkan Wayne Rooney juga absen karena sanksi skorsing.

Ada pun Inggris memimpin grup mereka dengan sepuluh angka dari empat pertandingan. Pendapatan Inggris sama dengan Montenegro, sementara Swiss, lawan Inggris di kualifikasi Piala Erooa 2012 pekan ini, berada di peringkat tiga dengan tertinggal empat angka.

United can cope without Scholes insists midfielder Carrick



There is nothing like a game against Barcelona to expose your midfield shortcomings but Michael Carrick insists Manchester United will continue to be a major force this season even if they fail to sign Wesley Sneijder or Samir Nasri.

Although United’s search for a new creative midfielder has so far proved fruitless, Carrick is confident that Sir Alex Ferguson has enough options already at his disposal to fill the gap left by Paul Scholes’s retirement.

‘People said that about Cristiano Ronaldo. When he left they said you can’t replace Cristiano because of the player he is, but you have to adapt as a squad and as a team.

‘We’ve lost Paul Scholes but we’ve got to adapt. I’m not going to play like Scholesy because that’s not my game, but neither are Anderson or Ryan Giggs.

'You’ve got to adapt in different ways and I’m sure we’ll do that. I’m not going to change as a player, that’s the way I am.

'You are your own character, personality and player. I’ll just keep doing the things I do. It’s been successful over the years so it won’t change how I do things.

‘At a club like this there’s always going to be to players and names being bandied around. To be honest, you want the best players to be here whether it’s in my position or not.

'There’s been a turnaround in players but it doesn’t change anything. We want to be successful again this season.’

United face the ultimate test at FedEx Field in Washington DC as they meet Barcelona in a replay of the Champions League Final at Wembley.

Messi will be missing and Carrick insists that a team widely acknowledged to be the greatest of their generation are beatable, warning Barca that the pain of a 3-1 defeat in London will only make United more determined to go one better this season.

He said: ‘It was a final, a one-off game, and we lost it. You don’t wipe it out of your mind because setbacks stay longer in the memory than being successful.

‘When you look back on your career, the harder times stand out and that’s what you learn from. It was such a disappointment not to go one better, and losing in the final drives you on even more for this season.

‘But Wembley’s gone, there’s no retrieving it. We’ll look ahead to this game and get ready for the start of the season.

‘The boss has said it, Barcelona have set the standard and taken it to the next level, if you like, and it’s up to us to try and achieve that.

'They’re not unbeatable, and we’ve shown that. They’re a terrific team with special players and that’s the challenge we face.’

MANCHESTER - Manchester United dipastikan tidak akan memainkan Tom Cleverley, saat melawan Benfica, Rabu besok. Cedera yang dialami gelandang muda itu, membuat Michael Carrick kecewa berat.

Seperti diketahui, pelatih Sir Alex Ferguson memang membuat banyak kejutan pada skuad setan Merah tahun ini. Salah satunya, dengan memainkan pemain muda dari akademi Old Trafford. Hasilnya cukup memuaskan. Wayne Rooney dkk mencatat empat kemenangan beruntun.

Rabu besok, United akan menyambangi markas Benfica di Portugal, untuk melakoni pertandingan perdana Liga Champions Grup C. Sayang, Ferguson tidak dapat menurunkan Tom Cleverley, yang mengalami cedera saat melawan Bolton Wanderers.

Gelandang muda Timnas Inggris itu harus absen selama satu bulan. Praktis, cedera yang dialami Cleverley tentu mengecewakan Carrick. "Pemain muda yang cedera itu sedang dalam performa terbaik," ujar Carrick dikutip Tribalfootball, Selasa (13/9/2011).

Selama empat pertandingan, Carrick memang harus puas melihat rekan-rekan mudanya bertarung membela bendera United. "Sangat senang melihat pemain muda bagaikan ledakan. Tambahan skuad ini sangat fantastis," lanjutnya.

"Kehadiran para pemain muda membuat skuad menjadi penuh antusias dan energi. Itu sudah terlihat di lapangan. Jadi, cedera yang dialami Cleverley memang cukup mengecewakan," tandas mantan gelandang Tottenham Hotspur itu.

Young Reds impress Carrick

Michael Carrick may not have played as much as he’d have liked this season, but that hasn’t diminished the enjoyment he’s taken from seeing United storm to the club’s best start in 26 years.

After five games, United have collected maximum points and scored 21 goals – statistics that make for impressive reading. But just as impressive is the sort of free-flowing, attack-minded football that Sir Alex’s men have employed.

“I have really enjoyed watching us, especially when you see us sitting top of the league after the start we have had,” Michael Carrick said. “It was a very tough start and now there are tough games to come. But I’m all for us playing good football and winning.”

The energy and pace with which United have played this term, particularly in midfield, is unquestionable. But is that a product of the personnel on the pitch (Anderson and Tom Cleverley have played the most league minutes in the centre of the park this season) or a concerted change in tactical approach?

“Certain players play certain ways,” Carrick admits, “but we always try to play with a high tempo, keep the ball on the ground and pass and move.

"The manager hasn’t needed to drum into us the need to play quickly any more than he usually does. He’s done that enough over the years!

“The philosophy here is to play at a high tempo and to move the ball quickly and test out the opposition. This season, things have come together very well for us.

“The training since we returned for pre-season has been of a very high quality and is very intense. Maybe that has something to do with it.”

Carrick knows more opportunities will be handed to both he and other more experienced team-mates as the season progresses. Nobody, he says, is panicking about losing their place.

“We’re well aware that there will be times during the season when the flowing football is not going to be there and you just have to find a way to win. Hopefully the experience will tell in those times.

“[At the moment] these young lads will be enjoying themselves. They’ve got an opportunity they possibly didn't think would come so soon.

“[When that happens] you just want to make the most of it when you get a chance. You are so young, you have never really had any setbacks. You just play the game freely and with enthusiasm and enjoy it. They are certainly doing that at the moment.”

Michael Carrick hails 'patient' Manchester United



Midfielder Michael Carrick admitted Manchester United got the tough game they expected after labouring to a 2-0 Champions league win over Otelul Galati in Bucharest.

Wayne Rooney scored two second-half penalties but United also had Nemanja Vidic sent off as both sides ended the game with 10 players.

"We expected it to be hard," Carrick told Sky Sports 4.

"We knew it was going to be tough, we had to be patient and in the end we came through.

"You go into the game expecting a tough game and anything else is a bonus."

Carrick claimed the sending-off of Vidic was not clear-cut.

He said: "It was a dubious sending-off at best really and we're disappointed with that."

Michael Carrick will miss next month’s crunch Champions League meeting with Basel through suspension.

The Reds midfielder collected his third yellow card of this season’s European campaign when he slid in on Pablo Aimar near the end of United’s 2-2 draw with Benfica at Old Trafford on Tuesday. Frustratingly for the 30–year-old, replays suggested Carrick won the ball fairly.

Turkish official Cuneyt Cakir disagreed, however, and cautioned Carrick for the challenge, which means he’ll now be forced to sit out of United’s matchday 6 encounter in Switzerland.

Losing Carrick, who’s almost a permanent fixture in Sir Alex’s starting line-up on big European nights, will be a big blow to the Reds, who need to avoid defeat in Switzerland to ensure qualification to the knockout phase.

The manager will have Nemanja Vidic back, however, after the Serbian completed his two-match ban after picking up a red card on matchday 3 in Romania.

United meet Basel at St Jakob's Park on Wednesday 7 December.
