Rooney to play for England against Switzerland
MEN - September 06, 2010

England coach Fabio Capello has confirmed Wayne Rooney will play in Tuesday's Euro 2012 qualifier against Switzerland despite recent allegations about the striker's private life.

Rooney was one of England's best performers in their 4-0 victory over Bulgaria on Friday night, however, his place in the team in Basle had come under question after lurid claims in two Sunday newspapers.

The Manchester United striker travelled with the team to Switzerland, however, and Capello said he was confident the player was in the right state of mind to take his place.

"Yes he will play. During training he was really good and I spoke with him and he's happy to play," Capello said.

"I know the players when they want to play - that is really important.

"Against Bulgaria he was really, really good on the pitch.

"He will also be in a good situation tomorrow. I hope the performance of Rooney tomorrow will be the same as at Wembley.

"We are focused on the game, not about the private life of the players. We are here to play this game and train very well."

Skipper Steven Gerrard said he expected Rooney to put the off-field matter to one side as England look to begin their qualification campaign with back-to-back wins.

"Yeah he's got an issue off the pitch put I don't think that will stop him from playing well," the midfielder said.

"I spoke with him today at lunchtime and in training and Wayne's been fine. He's looking forward to the game and playing well.

"I think football can do that sometimes (help you focus) if you've got an issue of the field.

"Once the game starts Wayne will be focused on the field and getting the three points.

"Wayne's a big character. You expect big performances from Wayne every time he steps on the pitch. You saw that against Bulgaria. I expect another big performance from Wayne."

Capello hopes for right type of headlines
Soccernet - September 5, 2010, 6:16 PM GMT

How Fabio Capello must dread opening up English newspapers. Saturday's fare was full of grace and favour for the Italian, with a 4-0 victory against Bulgaria to cherish, and a strikeforce pairing to get excited about it. Sunday's tidings will have placed Capello's head in his hands as yet another of his leading players has suffered the fickle finger of that good old English tradition - the kiss n' tell, warts n'all tabloid sting.

Now England's coach will have to field a series of questions that are in no way related to football matters, and perhaps even deal with his star man suffering a crisis off the field. Wayne Rooney's peccadilloes are sure to dominate front- and back-page agendas for some time to come. And all this will be going on when England face what is likely the most difficult trip of their Euro 2012 qualifying campaign.

Switzerland and Basel offer the first genuine test of Capello Mark II. The Swiss are coached by Ottmar Hitzfeld, the German coach who has a better record in club management than his England counterpart. Indeed, Hitzfeld won two Champions League titles to Capello's one, and with different clubs too. The Swiss have also qualified for their last three tournaments, while also hosting Euro 2008. Hitzfeld took over after that tournament and his charges only lost one qualifier for the World Cup just gone.

What is best remembered about the Swiss in South Africa is that they were the only team to beat Spain but also failed to make the second round, after losing to Chile and only drawing 0-0 with hapless Honduras. Yet Hitzfeld's popularity levels are not in the depths that Capello still finds himself in and the German has promised a more expansive approach from his team. Capello meanwhile, must negotiate another soap opera before being allowed to concentrate on the job in hand.

England player to watch: Wayne Rooney

This section was supposed to be about a highly positive showing at Wembley on Friday, where a withdrawn Wayne was able to turn playmaker and provider for Jermain Defoe's hat-trick against the Bulgarians. It was Rooney's best performance since injury struck in Munich in March, and he looked relaxed and comfortable, an outward veneer that perhaps hid what was coming on Sunday. Now, the best that can be hoped for is that Rooney allows his football to do the talking. After all, there will be plenty of talking about the rest of his life.

Switzerland player to watch: Gelson Fernandes

The scorer of one of just two goals that eventual champions Spain conceded in South Africa, Fernandes may be familiar to English audiences as he spent two years at Manchester City, for whom Sven-Goran Eriksson signed the midfielder in 2007 and hailed him as the "best young player in Switzerland". Set to play in the midfield engine room, his poise and class on the ball, married to no little athleticism, will provide a test for Steven Gerrard, Gareth Barry and (should he drop back into what is bound to be a crowded midfield area) Wayne Rooney.

Key battle: Eren Derdiyok v Gary Cahill

News of Michael Dawson's injury is far better than expected but Capello looks likely turn to a highly inexperienced defender in Bolton's Gary Cahill a player in whom the Italian expressed his confidence in the aftermath of the Bulgaria victory. With Phil Jagielka as the ball-playing centre-back, Cahill will play as a stopper and will likely face Derdiyok, the man who scored the first goal against Capello's England in February 2008. The Bayer Leverkusen striker will lead the line for Hitzfeld, with veteran Alexander Frei playing off him.

Trivia: Switzerland are reigning World Cup Under-17 champions, after winning their title in Nigeria last year. The youngsters' first graduate to the senior team was Nassim Ben Khalifa, who made his international debut in August against Austria.

Stats: England last met Switzerland in a European Championship qualifier way back in 1971, and the match was drawn 1-1 with goals from Mike Summerbee and Karl Odermatt.

Odds: Switzerland are 4.00 to win, with England offered at 1.83 and the draw offered at 3.30 at Bet 365. Rooney to score first and England to win 1-0 comes in at 16.00.

Prediction: That Wayne Rooney loses his temper at some point& and the match is drawn 0-0.

Thanks sam,he..tampilan di hp nggak ada opsi thanks-nya,apa lagi cendol jadi manual aja. Sama dikit usul..apa threadnya nggak digabung aja ya sama sodaranya england news. Rentan double post (malah udah double) atau dikit usul buat temen2 agar liat2 thread yang laen sebelum posting buat meminimalisasi posting dobel,he.. But, thanks info-nya cak.

BTT, seneng juga ngeliat inggris unggul plus rooney ngegolin. Tapi ngeliat skuadnya jadi rada gimana gitu. Skornya jadi 5-1 buat citi atas United setelah sebelumnya 4-1 dimatch pertama. Nggak berhubungan langsung sama prestasi klub sih, tapi ya kurang enak juga dipikir2.

wah match kedua 3-1, mantap juga nih inggris walaupun lini pertahanan agak kocar kacir untunglah joe hart mainnya baguuus.
lini tengah milner-barry-gerrard-johnson better ya tanpa lampard?
terus diterapin aja kayak gini dimatch berikutnya, mungkin saatnya lampard penghuni bench.

[Friendly] England 1 - 2 France
First home defeat for Capello

Soccernet - November 18, 2010, 8:12 AM GMT

Fabio Capello opened a door on the future for England - and the fans did not like what they saw as the Three Lions were jeered off after defeat to France at Wembley.

Aside from Andy Carroll, who did as well as he could with such little service, and the ever-dependable Steven Gerrard, there were few straws for England to grasp until substitute Peter Crouch did what he does best within seconds of his arrival.

It took the Tottenham forward just over a minute to turn home Ashley Young's corner and claim his 22nd international goal, joint 15th on England's all-time list.

Unfortunately, though England continued to pump high balls into the visitors' area, it was not enough to threaten a superior French team who had claimed a matchwinning lead through Karim Benzema and Mathieu Valbuena and inflicted the hosts' first defeat since their loss to Germany in Bloemfontein.

Les Bleus seem to have recovered far more quickly from their World Cup shambles, and while many of Capello's team will emerge as better players for this experience, the fact most of the elder statesmen failed to perform does not bode particularly well.

By half-time, even the Brent residents who had taken advantage of the Football Association's £5 ticket offer must have felt they had overpaid.

Any assessment of Capello's experimental side must be qualified with an acknowledgement of how young some of its components were.

However, there were clear deficiencies. Right-back Phil Jagielka had a major problem, his starting positions too often incorrect, which was only to be expected of someone who has played that role so infrequently.

Florent Malouda certainly enjoyed himself, cutting in from his left-wing station at regular intervals as France took control of the first-half.

Debutant Jordan Henderson was incapable of preventing himself being completely bypassed. Far more worryingly, the same sentiment could be applied to the vastly experienced Gareth Barry.

Malouda almost caught Ben Foster out with a shot from the edge of the area after he had been presented with far too much room to advance into.

Yoann Gourcuff brought an excellent save from Joe Hart's deputy as his shot dipped wickedly at the last moment.

These events were the precursor to Benzema's fine 16th-minute strike.

Questions should not just be asked of how Foster was beaten at his near post. Others should be raised of the ease with which the Real Madrid forward, now back in Jose Mourinho's good books, was first able to take possession, then race on unchecked as he belted Malouda's neat return pass into the net.

Within minutes, Benzema and Samir Nasri had performed a repeat. This time overworked skipper Rio Ferdinand was able to block.

Benzema also fired well wide when he should have done much better given the neat approach play of Nasri and Malouda.

England needed to relieve the pressure. They did so by utilising Carroll's main strength. His power.

In one way it was depressing to see England revert to type so readily. In another it was easy to see why. The truth was it worked.

Two cushioned headers from the Newcastle man created opportunities that Steven Gerrard and James Milner drove straight at Hugo Lloris.

Another was sent flying into orbit by Gerrard after he had caught his shot on the half-volley.

Carroll even managed to create half a yard for himself on the edge of the box, although again Lloris gathered the shot more than saved it.

One of three half-time changes, Micah Richards introduced at full-back to allow Jagielka to return to a role he is more comfortable with in the centre, should have made England a more durable defensive unit. It barely made a difference.

After a pretty even battle with Arsenal team-mate Kieran Gibbs, Bacary Sagna scored a decisive victory when he shot down the touchline unopposed, exposing a chronic lack of cover, before crossing into a penalty area where the dangerous Valbuena arrived with perfect timing to finish.

England responded positively at least to that 55th-minute setback. Carroll brought another save out of Lloris before receiving a decent ovation as he made way for Cardiff's Jay Bothroyd, who joined that exclusive club of non-top flight internationals.

A shot from substitute Adam Johnson turned into a game of pinball as it ricocheted off four bodies before bouncing wide, then the Manchester City winger delivered the teasing cross that Lloris pushed into Gerrard, only for the vice-captain's snap-shot to fly wide.

The excellent Nasri struck the outside of a post before Crouch turned home Ashley Young's far-post corner five minutes from time.

Crouch remains an enigma, with Capello unconvinced about the wider aspects of his game beyond what is surely vital for a striker, the principle task of finding the net.

Bothroyd could not manage it anyway, as his tame header wasted England's best chance of an equaliser in stoppage-time.
