Harry Maguire admits Manchester United 'have to improve' if they are to have success against Roma and Liverpool after goalless draw at Leeds

* Manchester United drew 0-0 with Leeds in the Premier League on Sunday
* United had 16 shots during the match but only four of those were on target
* The Red Devils face Roma on Thursday before hosting Liverpool on Sunday

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire admitted his side had not created enough chances to win after the game at Elland Road finished goalless.

It was a forgettable encounter with Marcus Rashford coming closest with a free-kick in the first half.

Asked for his assessment of the game, he told Sky Sports: 'Tight. I feel like we had control of the game without really punishing them and creating. We created some good chances - enough to score - but we didn't create enough.

Harry Maguire knows Man United will have to improve when they face Roma and Liverpool. It was a game of few real chances and n either side did enough to earn the three points

'We knew how they were going to play, especially here. We felt at Old Trafford in the first half that we capitalised on the areas that they left. Our attacking players love a one v one and, today, it just wasn't to be.'

United face Roma in the Europa League before reigning champions Liverpool head for Old Trafford on Sunday, and Maguire admitted they would have to be better than they were in Leeds in both games.

He said: 'It's a big week. We need to improve on today, for sure, we need to be more clinical in the final third.

'Obviously Roma in the Europa League is going to be a tough tie, but it's one we are looking forward to, and then Liverpool at Old Trafford.

'It's a big week, but we've got to go into it full of confidence and try to improve on what we've shown today.'

Harry Maguire demands his Manchester United team-mates finish the job and lift the Europa League trophy after FINALLY reaching a final under manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

* Manchester United finally banished their semi-final hoodoo under Solskjaer
* The Red Devils lost 3-2 to Roma on Thursday but went through 8-5 on aggregate
* United will face Spanish side Villarreal in the final in Gdansk later this month

Harry Maguire says Manchester United 'have got to win' the Europa League after reaching their first final under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Red Devils finally banished their semi-final hoodoo under Solskjaer by completing a 8-5 victory on aggregate over Roma on Thursday night, despite losing the second leg 3-2 in Rome.

United will face Spanish side Villarreal in the final in Gdansk later this month after they beat Arsenal 2-1 over two legs.

And Maguire wants to lift his first trophy at the club.

He said: 'It’s a great achievement. Obviously we didn’t win the game tonight so that is disappointing but we did the hard work in the first leg and we put ourselves in a great position. We knew tonight that we needed to start the first half well and we started the game a bit edgy. They actually played a man-to-man pressing style.

'It made the game end to end like basketball. We got a good result at half time but the second half we gave them too man chances to be honest. We need to improve for the final but it’s a great achievement.

Captain Harry Maguire says Manchester United 'have got to win' the Europa League

'Obviously we don’t want to lose any football match. We came into it tonight wanting to win the game. We put ourselves in a great position in the first leg and credit to the boys, we obviously won’t celebrate tonight but we will congratulate ourselves for overcoming the semi-final stage and making it to the final of a competition that we have to go and win.'

Edinson Cavani scored both United goals to seal their passage although they were thankful to goalkeeper David De Gea for a series of stops.

Maguire added: 'Edison scored two great goals. His movement and his work rate were great. Without the ball he was excellent. He always offers us that. His second goal was typical of him and what he has done throughout his career. He is a top player and he is a top player for us.

'As for David, as a central player I am not too pleased about how much he has had to do - I would much prefer him not to make a save. But when we needed him tonight he was there and pulled off big saves. That’s what he has done throughout his career.'

Don't rule him out just yet! Harry Maguire hands Manchester United and England a potential injury boost as the defender is seen without his crutches or protective boot at the premiere of Sir Alex Ferguson's film

* The Red Devils captain is in a race to be fit for the Europa League final next week

Harry Maguire has raised hopes he will be fit for Manchester United's Europa League final next week after he was spotted without his crutches or protective boot on Thursday night.

The Red Devils captain has been wearing a support boot and walking with crutches since picking up an ankle ligament injury against Aston Villa earlier this month.

But the defender was spotted without both as he attended the premiere of 'Sir Alex Ferguson: Never Give In' on Thursday night, alongside his team-mates and boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Manchester United defender attended the premiere of 'Sir Alex Ferguson: Never Give In'

Solskjaer admitted Maguire's chances of making the Europa League final against Villarreal on May 26 'didn't look great' after United's draw with Fulham.

But the Red Devils boss said he was remaining hopeful and may have more cause for optimism after seeing his skipper without his crutches or protective boot,

'Hopefully we can have good news early but I'll give it a while on Harry,' Solskjaer said on Tuesday.

'He's shown his importance. I felt I became a very good player when I was injured. People realise what you can do.

Maguire was joined by several of his Manchester United team-mates at Ferguson's premiere

'Harry is our leader and he's been a big miss at the moment. I'll give him as long as he needs before he says yes or no.

'He's making progress but we don't want to test it out too early. Harry wants this so much but he doesn't want to take risks either.

'When I spoke to him this morning, he was quite positive. We have to be positive and think he's going to make it, until we have to say no. I've always been an optimist.'

United have not won since losing Maguire to injury, with defeats against Leicester and Liverpool before the 1-1 draw with Fulham.

The defender had played every minute of every game prior to his withdrawal at Villa Park.

England boss Gareth Southgate will also be hoping the 27-year-old makes a full recovery in time for the Euros this summer.

Southgate is due to name his 26-man squad for this summer's tournament next week.

Maguire was joined by several of his United team-mates at Thursday's premiere in Manchester including Marcus Rashford, Luke Shaw, Scott McTominay, Brandon Williams and Phil Jones.

Harry Maguire admits to Gary Neville that critical pundits are annoying him and 'can change players' confidence' after Manchester United captain faced flak from TV's Roy Keane and Robbie Savage

* Harry Maguire has slammed pundits who criticised Manchester United recently
* The United captain says criticism from pundits annoys him and his team-mates
* Maguire claims the negative feedback can hit a player's confidence
* The defender suffered personal criticism from Roy Keane and Robbie Savage

Harry Maguire admits criticism from football pundits 'annoys' Manchester United's stars - after he came in for some intense criticism from former United players during the season.

The Red Devils captain has been a key player for the club, who finished second in the Premier League behind rivals Manchester City this season, with Maguire missing just six games in their top flight and Europa League campaigns this term.

Maguire has been the subject of personal criticism from former United captain Roy Keane and Robbie Savage over the past 12 months live on air, with the 28-year-old telling Gary Neville in The Overlap podcast that players do get affected by this.

When asked by Neville whether it annoys United's players, Maguire said: 'Yeah I think it does, I'm not going to sit here and lie. But I think you've got to come to an agreement that it's opinions, everyone has an opinion.

Harry Maguire admits pundit criticism of Manchester United annoys him and his team-mates. Maguire and his United team-mates have been criticised by pundits regularly

'Of course everyone wants to hear people speak about them doing well and everything's nice but that's not life, that's not football, you've got to accept that.

'I think it can change confidence in players, especially the ones that listen to it more than others. Because you're a big part of the game now. You analyse things, every goal that we concede you analyse.

'I think it can affect confidence but what I would say is that when you do, you don't just speak negative about players, you also speak positive so I think as a footballer you've got to expect that.'

Maguire claims he accepts criticism as it is expected but insists it frustrates United players. Roy Keane has insisted United have lacked leaders even though Maguire has played regularly. Robbie Savage has claimed in the past that Maguire should not be Manchester United captain

Maguire has had a promising season for United this term, playing in every single minute of the club's league matches until he picked up an ankle problem earlier this month.

However, the defender was called out by Keane after the Red Devils conceded early on against Tottenham last June, in the club's first game back after the coronavirus hiatus.

Keane said on Sky Sports at half-time in the match, which ended in a 1-1 draw: 'Maguire and (David) De Gea, I wouldn't let them on the bus after the match. Shocking.

'I'm disgusted with it. Maguire, De Gea you should hang your heads in shame.'

Four months later, ex-United academy product Savage claimed Maguire should not be the captain of the club in the immediate aftermath of a 6-1 defeat at home to Spurs.

Savage told BT Sport: 'The United defence was out of shape and had no leadership – the goals that they conceded were so bad. Luke Shaw kept going inside, over covering. United weren't switched on, they weren't running back.

'Harry Maguire – a Manchester United captain? Seriously? He's a good player but a Manchester United captain? It was schoolboy defending and there was little to no desire.'

After Maguire and his United team-mates were slammed again by Keane following a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal in November, the centre-back claimed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side were not affected by negativity.

He said in November: 'We don't look at what's happening, especially after a negative result, we don't bring the negativity into the place.

'We stay positive. I can say for sure there are a lot of leaders in this squad. I'm the captain and I have a lot of leadership around me with staff and players. So, no, there's a lot of leaders.'

'We're heartbroken and devastated': Harry Maguire reflects on cruel defeat by Italy on penalties but admits England 'gave everything' in final

* Harry Maguire was one of England's standout players of the tournament
* Manchester United defender admitted at time team could have been braver
* But he added: 'They're a great team, credit to Italy they've been fantastic'

Harry Maguire has reflected on England's heartbreaking Euro 2020 final defeat by Italy on penalties.

The Manchester United centre-back, who was outstanding for the Three Lions during the tournament, said Gareth Southgate's side are 'devastated' by the loss.

England scored in the second minute through Luke Shaw but the Azzurri dominated the second half and equalised through Leonardo Bonucci.

Neither team could find a winner in extra time and even though Jordan Pickford made two saves on penalties, Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka and Jadon Sancho missed from the spot to crown Italy as champions.

After the game, Maguire said: 'We are heartbroken, disappointed, gutted, the lads are devastated.

'We gave everything out there, you've seen it was a bit of a ding dong. We had the first-half, they had the second, extra time could have gone either way.

'We found another gear in second period of extra time and put pressure on them. To be decided by penalties is disappointing and to lose the match is not what we came here to this stadium for. We wanted to bring the trophy home and it was unfortunate.'

Harry Maguire said England are heartbroken and devastated by the Euro 2020 final defeat. Maguire scored his penalty but it was in vain as the Azzurri came through to win it

The nature of Bonucci's equaliser also disappointed Maguire, who felt it was fortunate after chaos ensued from a corner.

He went on: 'At times they're a top side. There's parts of the game they would put pressure and we'll need to see it out. They didn't create many clear cut chances, they scored from a set play.

'I mean it's taken about five ricochets in the box and fallen to their player for a tap-in so it wasn't our night and there's times in that second half we could have been braver but there were times we were excellent and maybe we could have punished them more especially in the first-half.

'They're a great team, credit to Italy they've been fantastic through the tournament. We controlled it well enough to warrant taking them all the way and couldn't find that extra bit.'

Having entered the tournament recovering from injury, Maguire emerged as a rock at the back alongside John Stones and England only conceded two goals in the competition.

He scored with arguably the best penalty in the shootout, smashing high into the top corner but proved to be in vain and England's 55-year wait for a major tournament win goes on.

Cristiano Ronaldo is hailed as the 'greatest player' in football history by his new Manchester United team-mate Harry Maguire... as defender tips the superstar to have a 'huge impact' after sealing 'amazing' Old Trafford return

* Cristiano Ronaldo's Manchester United return was made official on deadline day
* His new team-mate, and captain, Harry Maguire has praised the stunning switch
* Maguire hailed Ronaldo as the 'greatest player' and said he will improve the team
* Ronaldo has also been tipped by Maguire to have a large influence off the pitch

Cristiano Ronaldo has been hailed as the 'greatest player' in the history of football by his new Manchester United team-mate Harry Maguire.

Five-time Ballon d'Or winner Ronaldo has made a sensational return to Old Trafford over a decade on from leaving, signing a two-year deal worth an initial £12.9million.

United were quick to react after it appeared their former talisman would be heading to fierce rivals City instead, and captain Harry Maguire hailed the signing.

Maguire is also hopeful that Ronaldo will have an influence both on and off the pitch in the club's quest for silverware this season.

'Yeah, of course, it's amazing,' Maguire said at a press conference ahead of England's hat-trick of World Cup qualifiers this month.

'Obviously, I'm away with England at the moment so my focus is on the game tomorrow but for him to sign back for the club and, for me, he is the greatest player to play the game.

Cristiano Ronaldo has been lauded as the 'greatest player to play the game' by Harry Maguire. Maguire is a team-mate of Ronaldo's at Manchester United after his sensational homecoming

'It's amazing to have him at the club and I'm sure he's going to have a huge impact on and off the field, and many players can look and learn and improve, and then, obviously, it's going to improve our team as well with his goalscoring record.

'So it's amazing to have him in the club and I'm looking forward to meeting him in a few days.'

United released an interview with Ronaldo today after his homecoming was officially unveiled on deadline day, and the now 36-year-old has also posed in their new kit.

Speaking to the club's in-house media channel, Ronaldo opened up on his reasons behind joining them from Juventus, and the influence of Sir Alex Ferguson.

Ronaldo, speaking to MUTV, delved into his reasons behind joining United for a second spell. Sir Alex Ferguson was praised by Ronaldo in the interview after helping influence the switch

'As everybody knows, since I signed at 18, Sir Alex Ferguson was the key,' he told MUTV.

'I remember when we played against Manchester when I was at Sporting Lisbon. For me, Sir Alex Ferguson is like a father in football for me.

'He helped me a lot, he taught me many things, and in my opinion of course he had a big role because the relationship that we had, we keep in touch all the time, and he's an unbelievable person.

United captain Maguire also believes Ronaldo will help keep standards high on and off the field. Ronaldo scored countless goals in his first stint and is tipped to lead United to trophies again

'I really like him a lot and he was the main key for me to be in the position that I am, that I signed for Manchester United.'

Ronaldo posted an emotional message to the club on social media after penning his lucrative contract, and signed off with: 'PS - Sir Alex, this one is for you...'

Brought to United from Sporting Lisbon by Ferguson in 2003, Ronaldo went on to win three Premier League titles, the Champions League, one FA Cup and two League Cups with the Red Devils.

He also scored 84 top-flight goals during his first stint before heading to Real Madrid, and looks a certainty to reach the 100-mark before end of the campaign.

He will join up with boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, a former team-mate of his, and the rest of United's squad after the international break and may play against Newcastle.

It has not yet been revealed, however, whether Ronaldo will be able to take his iconic No 7 jersey. Edinson Cavani currently sports the number.

jangankan Maguire, semua pemain terutama pemain2 muda kayak Rashford, Greenwood, Sancho, Tominay, Shaw harus meneladani etos kerja Ronaldo. kalo Maguire mending belajar dari Varane dulu, biar mereka makin padu dan klop sebagai tandem di jantung pertahanan

Harry Maguire insists Manchester United have 'loads of time to bounce back' from shock Champions League defeat by Young Boys as captain backs Jesse Lingard to 'learn' from his disastrous last-minute backpass

* Harry Maguire has backed Manchester United to recover from their setback
* The Red Devils lost their opening Champions League match to Young Boys
* Jesse Lingard's dreadful backpass gifted the hosts a last-minute winning goal
* Maguire is confident Lingard will learn from his mistake and bounce back

Harry Maguire is confident Manchester United will recover from their nightmare Champions League start but knows they have to cut out the ill-discipline and errors that cost them in the defeat to Young Boys.

A kind-looking group started with the Red Devils' easiest away match, yet Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's stuttering side came a cropper in Switzerland on Tuesday evening.

Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring at the rocking Stadion Wankdorf, but Aaron Wan-Bissaka's red card in the 35th minute put United on the back foot.

Harry Maguire believes Manchester United will bounce back from a disappointing defeat. United lost 2-1 to Young Boys after Aaron Wan-Bissaka's red card left them down to ten men

Nicolas Moumi Ngamaleu deservedly drew Young Boys level in the second half before a careless Jesse Lingard backpass allowed substitute Jordan Siebatcheu to seal a stunning 2-1 stoppage-time win.

'Of course discipline is a huge part of tournament football,' United captain Maguire said.

'For example, if this was a knockout game and we go out of the competition because we go down to 10 men, I am sure everyone will be kicking themselves.

'It's fortunate that it is the first game of the group and we have loads of time to bounce back from it.

'In terms of Jesse, obviously no footballer likes making mistakes but it's part and parcel of the game.

Jesse Lingard's disastrous backpass gave the hosts the winner with the last kick of the game

'We're humans, every footballer makes mistakes, we'll learn from it, he'll learn from it.

'He'll pick himself up and he'll be ready to go on Sunday because that's part and parcel of football.'

Asked about Wan-Bissaka's sending off for a rash challenge when attempting to atone for a heavy touch, Maguire added: 'I can't comment, really. I haven't seen it back.

'I'm pretty sure when you slow it down and you look at it a million times and see it in slow motion, I think every tackle you could probably make something for it that it was a red card.

'Any tackle that's a foul, you could probably say someone's gone over the ball. I haven't really seen it back so I can't really comment on it.'

Maguire suggested that the use of slow-motion replays makes tackles look worse than they are

Wan-Bissaka's sending off was the turning point in Bern, where former Huddersfield manager David Wagner's side smelt blood and attacked relentlessly.

United introduced Raphael Varane and moved to a back five at half-time in a bid to stem the tide, but Solskjaer's side were eventually undone in the Group F opener.

'I think the majority of their chances came late in the first half when we were playing a back four and we couldn't really get out to stop the crosses,' Maguire said of the gameplan.

'We couldn't defend the box well enough with the number of bodies that they were throwing forward into the box.

'And then we've come out in the second half and I felt we looked controlled without the ball, without being a huge threat on the counter-attack.

'Obviously we could have done more on the ball but without the ball I felt they didn't really create big opportunities.

'The first goal is unfortunate, the deflections and ricochets. I don't know who it ends up going in off.

'The last goal is a mistake, which obviously happens in football, but it's unfortunate again.

'In terms of the shape without the ball, I felt it was a lot better when we went to a back three slash back five. Obviously with the counter-attacks, we maybe could have done a little bit more.'

As reported by The Sun, United want to reward their captain for establishing himself as a key figure for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side.

Maguire currently earns £189,000-a-week, with his contract running until the summer of 2025.

Given how highly is regarded at Old Trafford, United are prepared to offer Maguire wages of £300,000-a-week.

United are eager to tie Maguire down to a new five-year deal and have approached the defender as they look to start early negotiations.

The centre-back has made 114 appearances for United since he joined for £80million from Leicester in 2019, a move that made him the world's most expensive defender.

Maguire also possesses plenty of experience at international level having been capped by England on 39 occasions.

Currently sidelined with a calf injury, Maguire will hope to be back fit soon and will be determined to strike up an effective long-term partnership with summer arrival Raphael Varane at the heart of the United defence.

United are currently in fourth place in the Premier League and will face Maguire's former club Leicester away when they return to action next Saturday.

Default Re: Harry Maguire

One unnamed Manchester United star 'is questioning Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's call to make Harry Maguire captain six months after joining', as more reports of dressing-room disharmony emerge

* Manchester United's fallout from losing to Leicester and Liverpool continues
* Harry Maguire's appointment as United captain has been reportedly questioned
* Maguire was named skipper just six months after signing from Leicester
* But a dressing-room inquest led this decision to be questioned by a player

The discontent at Manchester United continues with under-fire manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reportedly questioned by one first-team player over why he appointed Harry Maguire as captain of the club.

The Red Devils are going through turmoil at present, having conceded nine goals in their last two Premier League matches - a 4-2 defeat at Leicester City on October 16 that was followed up by a humiliating 5-0 home loss to bitter rivals Liverpool on Sunday.

And according to a report, a clear-the-air meeting between players and management occurred just two days after the former result - with players not holding back on their opinions.

Harry Maguire's status as Man United captain has been reportedly questioned by a team-mate. Maguire was officially named United captain in January 2020 - just six months after joining. In a clear-the-air meeting, one unnamed player questioned Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's decision

The Times claims that one aspect that had irked a member of the squad was the elevation of Maguire to captain just six months after joining the club.

The England centre back was signed in an £80million deal from Leicester in August 2019 but by January 2020 he was handed the armband on a permanent basis.

The 28-year-old was picked ahead of the likes of David de Gea and Marcus Rashford, who were longer-serving members at Old Trafford and had been skipper at times during that 2019-20 season.

'He's [Maguire] come in and been a leader in the group. I've been, not surprised, but I've been impressed by his leadership skills, so Harry will keep on wearing the armband,' Solskjaer said at the time.

'He's come in and everything about him tells me he is a leader. He's part of a group that we've had, that have been leading this young group.

'Ashley [Young] has been of course, Marcus is a young lad, but also David, Harry. So Harry will keep on wearing the armband now.'

David de Gea had captained United during 2019-20 too and was a longer-serving member

The Maguire captaincy situation wasn't the only issue discussed though during the meeting.

Another player criticised some of his team-mates for an apparent lack of motivation in training.

Solskjaer's tactics and favouritism were also lambasted, as another member asked him why he is so resistant to change a losing team - especially when others are performing well in training.

As reported by Sportsmail, despite the mounting pressure, Solskjaer is set for a stay of execution as manager but is still fearing for his long-term future at the club.

Solskjaer took training at Carrington on Tuesday for the first time since United's 5-0 thrashing by Liverpool, a display labelled 'embarrassing' by senior players.

The Norwegian is preparing the team for Saturday's trip to Tottenham amid a backdrop of intense scrutiny and some members of his squad questioning whether the slide can be halted under his management.

Sportsmail understands that United - who gave Solskjaer a new three-year contract over the summer - were planning to review the 48-year-old's position in December.

The galling surrender at Old Trafford last weekend has, however, accelerated that process. Board-level talks between co-chairman Joel Glazer, Ed Woodward and managing director Richard Arnold took place on Monday.

United had not been prepared for such a dire run of results, with Solskjaer's side losing five of their last nine games.

The board has so far resisted the calls for change, with the manager expected to remain in charge at Spurs. Sir Alex Ferguson and former chairman Martin Edwards visited Carrington on Tuesday afternoon, with United insisting the pair were attending a pre-planned commitment.

Solskjaer's tactics and refusal to change a losing team have been questioned by one player - the Norwegian will stay as Manchester United boss but his long-term future is in doubt. Solskjaer's position became perilous after a 5-0 home loss by arch-rivals Liverpool. United's board members had been planning on reviewing Solskjaer's position in December

Ferguson has been a champion of his former striker and there has always been reticence to change at the top when United have fallen on troubling spells of form in previous campaigns.

Yet Solskjaer now faces three huge games - first Tottenham, next a Champions League clash at Atalanta and then the derby against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City - that look likely to determine his prospects.

Solskjaer is currently in the middle of a rare full week on the training ground in an attempt to arrest the slump in form.

Some players have privately raised concern over the tempo of sessions and believe they are being consistently outsmarted tactically by opponents.

The Glazers, based in Florida, have been watching developments with interest but senior United sources were adamant last night that no approaches for potential successors had been made after Antonio Conte, the former Chelsea boss, expressed an interest in a move.

Although formerly of Liverpool, Leicester City’s Brendan Rodgers has admirers at United - along with Ajax’s Erik ten Hag.
