Manchester - Paul Pogba sempat hijrah dari Manchester United sebelum dibeli kembali dengan harga yang mahal. Dia pun buka suara mengenai alasannya lima tahun lalu.

Pogba pergi dari MU di bursa transfer musim panas 2012. Dia bergabung dengan Juventus secara cuma-cuma.

Bersama Bianconeri, Pogba menjadi salah satu pemain yang tak tergantikan di lini tengah selama empat musim. Pemain tim nasional Prancis itu mencatatkan 178 pertandingan di semua ajang, dengan sumbangan 34 gol.

Selama membela Juve, Pogba menyumbangkan sebanyak delapan piala baik mayor maupun minor.

MU yang mencari gelandang, kembali membeli Pogba dengan nilai transfer 89 juta poundsterling. Di musim pertamanya, Pogba sukses memenangi Piala Liga Inggris dan Liga Europa bersama The Red Devils.

Pogba mengungkapkan alasan pergi dari MU lima tahun lalu, dia pun juga sudah tahu suatu saat nanti bakal kembali ke Old Trafford.

"Saya meninggalkan Manchester untuk bermain. Itu yang sangat saya inginkan. Meski saya masih muda, saya merasa bahwa saya bisa bermain saat ini dan saya tak mau menunggu," kata Pogba dalam wawancara dengan Esquire.

"Jadi, andai itu bukan dengan Manchester, itu pasti dengan suatu tim. Tapi dalam pikiran saya, saya tahun: 'ini belum selesai, saya mungkin kembali'.

"Ibu saya bilang ke saya begini: 'Kamu akan kembali suatu saat nanti'. Dan saya di sini sekarang, dengan potongan rambut di Manchester," tambah pemain 24 tahun itu.

POGBA: I WANT TO BE A LEADER FOR UNITED

Paul Pogba says he is focused on helping Manchester United achieve more success, but also on being a real leader for the team.

The midfielder was asked about the loss of two of the biggest characters in the dressing room, Wayne Rooney and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, during a press conference at Georgetown University ahead of Wednesday’s match against Barcelona - the final fixture in the US ahead of two games in Europe on Tour 2017, presented by Aon.

In reply, the France international explained the importance of learning from players like Rooney, Ibrahimovic and current captain Michael Carrick and he hopes he can one day become a renowned leader within the team.

“Obviously, Zlatan was a leader, he was a big leader, because he always helped the team and even when he wasn’t playing he was a leader outside of the pitch," declared Pogba.

"I have been here for one season and I came here to hopefully be a leader for the team. That is the objective, that is how you should be. You want to grow up as a player and as a leader as well. Hopefully I can learn from Wayne, from Carras, from all of the players and become a leader."

When asked to look back on his transfer-record arrival last summer, Pogba admitted: "It was a big challenge for me. I knew that I wouldn’t be playing in the Champions League but I said to myself that I want Manchester United to be the Manchester United that I knew back in the day.

"I think we are on the way [towards that]. We won three trophies last season, we are back in the Champions League and the team is improving a lot again. So I hope that we are going to continue in that way, and improve and improve."

Jose Mourinho has claimed Paul Pogba deserves to be placed among the world's elite.

The Manchester United manager lavished praise on Pogba after an encouraging display during Wednesday's slender defeat by Barcelona.

Pogba provided moments of real class in Washington DC - and the Frenchman's manager believes he should be named in the same bracket as the very best.

'Messi and Neymar, there is only one Messi and one Neymar,' Mourinho said. 'Suarez, Iniesta, Pique, Ronaldo, Bale, Modric, Toni Kroos, there is only one, so they can only be playing for one club - we can't have them, they belong to the clubs.

'One of my players, Paul Pogba, showed the level and he belongs to that level.

'There are players that are special players and there is nothing you can do. You try to compensate the difference in quality with a certain tactical organisation.

'With that you can win in football it's possible a team is in a certain day better than the sum of the parts that's poss in football but the parts are amazing.

Mourinho has been enthused by United's successful tour of America but questions remain as to who will partner Eric Bailly in the centre of defence.

Bailly has not yet played alongside new £31million signing Victor Lindelof, with Chris Smalling and Phil Jones also vying for a starting berth.

Explaining why Bailly had not partnered Lindelof, Mourinho added: 'I think we will understand the reason in a couple of days.

'Bailly is suspended for the first Champions League match and the next couple of days you will have an understanding of why we play Lindelof and Smalling.'

The esteem in which Jose Mourinho holds Paul Pogba is clear to see but it has been really rammed home over the last 48 hours.

Points are being made, and not so subtly. The first came before the defeat by Barcelona, the second directly after.

Pogba, Mourinho asserted, is now in the same realm as the world's finest. Lionel Messi, Neymar, Cristiano Ronaldo and the rest. More than a few would argue that is the minimum expected from someone who is the most expensive footballer in history.

But more striking from a United perspective was what Mourinho said a day before that. When the injuries piled up, when Zlatan Ibrahimovic was no longer available, Pogba turned up.

The United boss believes the central midfielder will act as the club's figurehead for years to come and, as he forgoes a vice-captain this season, is pushing him towards added responsibility.

'Last season he came in the week where we started the Premier League and this season is his second season, where he was handed being a very important player for us also in terms of that leadership on the pitch,' Mourinho said.

'Wayne Rooney was not playing a lot, Zlatan was injured and Michael Carrick was not starting the final, the semi-final of the Europa League and so on, so Paul ended the season by being an important player also in the dressing room.'

He started to show the sort of drive United are desperate for, and one 60-yard run along the touchline, riding challenges to hold on to possession against Barcelona, offered a glimpse at the power and gumption he can offer.

But more than that is the way in which the club's new crop of players can identify with him. Pogba is the ringleader of United's emerging youthful core and that cannot be understated.

He is best friends with Romelu Lukaku, with the pair on similar wavelengths, while his relationship with Jesse Lingard is strong. Forget the dabs, handshakes and commercial sideshows, bonds have been formed and, like it or not, that should serve United and Mourinho well.

Marcus Rashford, for example, relates to both Lingard and Pogba having played in small-sided games with them as a child.

Pogba has broad shoulders and Mourinho knows he can unite a group of players. Still only 24, he is the heartbeat of the dressing room, a dressing room which is changing.

They are not the images of old-school 'model pros' but the game has changed. Professionalism comes in a different guise now. Pogba acts as the Pied Piper. The laughing and joking emanates from his corner of the room. They all follow dutifully.

'He starts this season from day one very comfortable with that role and I think the fact that Michael is this kind of silent leader, a leader by example, leader by class, but is a silent leader, I think the fact that Paul can be like the leader of the young people helps,' Mourinho added.

'He is still an academy boy; he is still the guy that in his relationship with the club and the structure, his relationship with the people in the club, is still the relationship of the kid that was here. So I think he has a fantastic role to play with us and (is) much more ready to do it than last season.'

There will certainly be a scramble to become Carrick's trusted assistant in the coming months, given the veteran is almost certain to retire at the end of this season.

That armband is up for grabs and Ander Herrera is certainly a viable alternative, but in this new world it seems inconceivable that Pogba would not be near the top of Mourinho's candidate list.

WHY THE STAGE IS SET FOR PAUL POGBA

Paul Pogba will be one of the star players of the 2017/18 Premier League, according to ex-Manchester United midfielder Quinton Fortune.

The South African is basing his prediction on the fact the club's record signing not only has a full year back at Old Trafford behind him, but has shown the benefits of going on Tour 2017, presented by Aon. Pogba has been outstanding all summer and played his part in the most recent victory for Jose Mourinho's men, the 2-1 triumph over Sampdoria in Dublin.

"Pogba has been fantastic now he's had a pre-season under his belt," Fortune told ManUtd.com. "Pogba stands out for me but it's a team performance.

"Of course he can be one of the best players in the league this season. I am sure this is one of his own objectives and goals he has set himself. I'm just happy he's settled now and has had a season back here, plus pre-season, which is very important.

"Paul looks very strong and very calm. He is not trying to prove to the whole world his ability as we've known that now for some time. This season, hopefully he'll score loads of goals and it's about him taking that leadership role.

"The manager has made him his captain a few times and it's good for him. He has got to take responsibility and I am sure he relishes that. He has got to help the side as the most important objective is for the team.

"I hope the team agree that objective is to win the Premier League. We have definitely got the team to do that."

Paul Pogba is relieved that Neymar's world record £198million move from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain has lifted the burden of being the world's most expensive player off his shoulders.

The Brazilian's staggering transfer earlier this month shattered the record set when Pogba rejoined Manchester United from Juventus for £89m a year ago.

The 24-year-old United midfielder struggled at times to justify what he has described as 'the mountain of the transfer' during his first season back at Old Trafford, but believes that he will now be left alone to focus on his football instead of the fee.

Asked if he feels liberated by Neymar being sold for more than twice the price, Pogba said: 'Last season, the first question from everyone was always all about the price tag. Now everyone is asking about the football. That tells you everything.

'I am always confident. I always give my best and now it is my second season. I know more about the Premier League and I adapt more with the team.

'My dream was to play and when I finished I always felt like I had missed something at Manchester United because I wasn't a first XI player for them. Now I'm back and happy to be back.

'I grew up a lot in Italy and I have come back as a man.'

Pogba played an important role in persuading his friend Romelu Lukaku to opt for a £75m move to United this summer rather than join Chelsea.

But the arrival of Nemanja Matic from Stamford Bridge for £40m could have an even greater impact on the Frenchman by giving him the freedom to get forward from midfield this season.

Pogba only scored five Premier League goals in his first campaign, despite hitting the post and bar nine times in all competitions, but he was on target in Sunday's opening 4-0 win over West Ham as Matic and Lukaku also starred for Jose Mourinho's side.

'Matic was a key player on Sunday and Romelu scored two goals, so it is what we wanted and what we expect,' added Pogba.

'It was an excellent start to the season but what matters is the end. We have started well, but we have to carry on like this. It is only one game.

'Against West Ham, Matic was starting behind and I could worry more about attacking. I feel good playing that way, but it depends on what the manager wants. What he wants, we have to do.

'I hope to get more goals. I hope I won't touch the post so much like I did last season. I know the occasion will come and I will always create something. It is the result for the team that matters. You cannot win a game by yourself.'

Pogba helped United win the Europa League in May with the opening goal in the final against Ajax in Stockholm, but he acknowledged the importance of mounting a stronger title challenge this season.

'I came here to win the Premier League and to challenge myself as well,' he said. 'I want to perform well, but it is about what the team does.

'You could make so many assists, so many goals, but if at the end of the season you lose the league it doesn't matter. What matters is winning the Premier League.

'With the experience of last season, new manager, new players, now it is the second season of Mourinho.

'We all know more about the Premier League. Even if Mourinho has experienced the Premier League before it was at Chelsea. Now he is at Manchester United — different team and more experience.'
