Harry Maguire back in Manchester United training for first time since arrest in Mykonos which saw him kicked off the England squad and is set to captain Red Devils in season opener

* Harry Maguire appeared at Man United training for the first time since his arrest
* The England international defender was arrested while on holiday in Mykonos
* The 27-year-old made his first public appearance since the arrest at SoccerAid

Harry Maguire returned to training on Monday for the first time since being arrested in Greece and is ready to lead Manchester United into the new season.

The 27-year-old defender, who was seen driving into Carrington in a white BMW, is set to captain Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side when United make a delayed start to the campaign against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford a week on Saturday.

Maguire was given an extended break by Solskjaer following the incident during a family holiday on the island of Mykonos last month when he was involved in a confrontation with Greek police.

Although the player was found guilty of assaulting police, verbal abuse and attempted bribery, the conviction has been nullified as part of an appeal that will involve a full retrial.

Maguire was also dropped from the England squad for the current Nations League games, but manager Gareth Southgate has confirmed that he will be recalled for next month's fixtures against Wales, Belgium and Denmark.

Maguire has been in regular contact with Solskjaer and is said to be very grateful for the support given to him by United, with no suggestion within the club that his role as captain is under threat.

Although Maguire felt ready to return to training sooner, it's understood that Solskjaer advised him to have a longer break after United's £80million signing admitted that he feared for his life during the incident.

Maguire has been training at home and is said to be in top condition, with United's fitness coaches able to access his performance stats remotely.

The former Leicester centre-back felt it was appropriate to be at Old Trafford for the Soccer Aid charity match on Sunday in his role as club captain, and posed for a picture with former United skippers Wayne Rooney and Bryan Robson ahead of his return to Carrington on Monday.

Default Re: Harry Maguire

Harry Maguire's disastrous summer has continued on the pitch, with defensive mishaps ridiculed by fans and pundits. But is it just a blip for the £80m United captain, or was Paul Merson's 2019 'waste of money' tirade spot-on?

* Maguire's poor form has led to strong criticism in the early weeks of the season
* Pundits and supporters alike have questioned the United captain's game
* Sky pundit Patrice Evra even asked whether he was fit to wear the armband
* He has received the backing of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Gareth Southgate
* Maguire returns to the England fold hoping to rediscover good form again

All kinds of old clips were being dredged up on Twitter after Harry Maguire's latest defensive struggles against Tottenham on Sunday.

One is of Soccer Saturday pundit Paul Merson questioning Maguire's abilities after his £80million move to Manchester United last year.

'Harry Maguire for £80m is ridiculous,' Merson says. 'Ridiculous at the highest level.'

Harry Maguire has come to epitomise Manchester United's poor early season performances. The defender didn't cover himself in glory as United were humiliated 6-1 by Tottenham

Presenter Jeff Stelling asked if Maguire is a good player. 'He's alright,' is the best Merson can muster.

'He ripped it up with England because he played in a three. But when you play three at the back it's for one reason only, the defenders ain't good enough, you don't trust them.'

Inevitably in the wake of United's 6-1 humiliation by Spurs, a match in which their captain didn't exactly cover himself in glory, there were plenty saying Merson was spot-on with his assessment.

Compilations of Maguire's mistakes and misjudgements punctuated the debate among fans beneath. But then anyone can be made to look terrible if you condense the worst moments of a season of 55 appearances into two minutes of video.

And it should be pointed out that later in the same clip Merson claims that Maguire's United team-mates Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford 'don't score goals'. Just the 45 between them last season then.

There's absolutely no question Maguire's season hasn't started the way he would have envisaged. The drama of his arrest and trial during a summer holiday in Greece followed by a series of United defensive horror shows, both individually and collectively.

There have been doubts raised about the pairing of Maguire and Lindelof in United's defence. Gary Neville has expressed his concerns about United's defensive pairing in his Sky analysis. Former United defender Patrice Evra questioned whether Maguire deserves to be captain

Maguire has been pilloried by fans and pundits alike. Gary Neville suggested after the 3-1 loss to Crystal Palace that 'United are never going to win the Premier League with that centre back pairing. They need to get a mobile, dominant centre half in alongside [Victor] Lindelof or Maguire.'

Neville went on to essentially say both Lindelof and Maguire were two slow to react to danger when opponents attack United.

Also on Sky Sports ahead of Sunday's thrashing by Tottenham, Patrice Evra questioned whether Maguire was captaincy material.

'How many years has be been here? Just one and he's the captain. It shows you we don't have any leaders to win trophies,' Evra said.

The following two hours seemed to vindicate them both. It was Maguire's poor header that allowed Erik Lamela in for Tottenham's equaliser, compounded when he wrestled Luke Shaw out the way in an effort to clear the ball.

It was Maguire charging up field to bundle over Harry Kane that led to their second, leaving him hopelessly out of position when the quickly-taken free-kick sent Heung-min Son clear.

He was nutmegged by Serge Aurier's cross to tee up Son for goal No 4 having drifted out to do what should have been Shaw's job.

Then footage emerged of Maguire disagreeing with Rashford over whether Lamela should have received a red card following his clash with Martial.

Maguire was caught out of position as a quick free-kick set Heung-min Son clear to score

Having gone over to close down Serge Aurier, Maguire was nutmegged leading to the fourth

So the list of Maguire's faults grows. Too slow, both in movement and reactions. Poor positioning. Clumsy. Poor at organising. Not a leader. Overpriced.

His early season form doesn't inspire confidence among England followers as he returns to the fold, especially with Eden Hazard, Kevin De Bruyne and a Belgium team ranked No 1 in the world awaiting on Sunday.

But, as we all know, memories can be very short in football and it's certainly true in Maguire's case.

He certainly wasn't being criticised when United went 19 matches undefeated in all competitions either side of the Covid-19 lockdown, keeping 12 clean sheets along the way.

Maguire had embraced the responsibility of being United's club captain following Ashley Young's January departure to Inter Milan and was in very good form, having found his feet after that £80m move from Leicester.

It appeared Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had found his best team and the partnership between Maguire and Lindelof was working efficiently.

There were no complaints about Maguire's form during United's long unbeaten run this year. Solskjaer had no issue handing Maguire the captain's armband, seeing him as a real leader

That shortage of pace didn't appear to be an issue back then and Maguire had become comfortable with his status as the world's most expensive defender, something he has no control over.

Indeed, he very much looked the part as United's captain and leader. Likewise, his place in Gareth Southgate's team for Euro 2020 seemed guaranteed.

His summer was always going to be short - United's final game, the loss to Sevilla in the Europa League semi-final, was on August 16 - with their first of this season on September 19.

Maguire - who missed only six of United's matches in 2019-20 and started 53 of the 55 he was available for, playing 4,962 minutes and being subbed off before the end only twice - was only likely to get a couple of weeks' rest.

With barely any pre-season under his belt, fatigue was always going to be a problem for Maguire and the United squad at large. It's clear from early season performances they're desperately playing catch up.

Maguire has been described as 'exceptional' by England boss Gareth Southgate this week

And of course, during his time off, Maguire was arrested following an altercation outside a nightclub in Mykonos and found guilty of aggravated assault, resisting arrest and attempted bribery.

He was handed a suspended sentence of 21 months and 10 days after a very quick trial. His legal team are appealing the verdict and there will be a full retrial at some point in a more senior court.

Maguire said in a BBC interview he was 'scared for my life' as police officer allegedly struck him on his legs.

He said he is 'mentally strong enough' to 'move on' but who knows how much the incident has been a distraction to his on-field performances.

The defender has received the backing of his managers for club and country. Southgate this week described Maguire as an 'exceptional player' as he welcomed him back to the squad having removed him for last month's internationals.

The hope is Maguire's poor early season form will prove to be only a temporary aberration

Solskjaer was quick to back Maguire following the incident in Greece, said he'd keep the captaincy and offered his ongoing support.

For Maguire, the games continue to come thick and fast. He is unlikely to feature in Thursday night's friendly against Wales but will play a part in England's three-man defence for the games with Belgium and Denmark.

The hectic pace of games may actually allow Maguire to rediscover his poise and some of last season's form rather than continue the jittery displays so far this season.

He hasn't, after all, become a dreadful defender in a matter of weeks.

'His performance needs to go up if he wants to keep his place': Ashley Cole warns under-fire Manchester United defender Harry Maguire that Joe Gomez or Conor Coady could steal his England spot if he doesn't improve

* Harry Maguire has been delivered a stark warning over his England starting spot
* The Manchester United captain returned to the starting line-up against Belgium
* Former international Ashley Cole says Maguire must improve his performances
* Joe Gomez and Conor Coady will be hoping to oust Maguire from the back line

Harry Maguire has been delivered a stark warning over his England starting role by former international Ashley Cole.

The Manchester United captain was restored to the Three Lions' line-up against Belgium on Sunday, in what proved to be his first international appearance after his arrest in Greece following a heated bar brawl.

But despite being brought back into the squad by Gareth Southgate, Cole insists that Maguire has improve his performances after a poor start to the season to fend off competition ahead of next summer's European Championships.

Ashley Cole has warned Harry Maguire that he must improve his performances for England. Ex-Three Lions international Cole pointed out competition from Conor Coady and Joe Gomez

Conor Coady was handed his second appearance for England in the friendly win over Wales in midweek and even capped off an impressive showing with a well-taken goal.

And Cole believes that the Wolves defender, and Liverpool regular Joe Gomez, are both mounting serious competition to usurp Maguire.

When questioned over Southgate's selection headache in defence, he told Sky Sports: 'It’s a tough one. On performances of late I would say no, but who after him is there? Maybe a (Joe) Gomez, maybe Conor Coady.

Maguire has endured a difficult start to the season after his arrest and conviction in Greece

'For now Maguire is a first choice but for sure his Premier League form has not been great. It’s probably helped him coming here in the England setup, a friendly environment, for him to understand his performance needs to go up a level if he wants to keep his place in this squad.'

Maguire's appearance against Belgium was his first on the international stage in 11 months.

He was frozen out of England's squad after his arrest on the island of Mykonos, which saw the 27-year-old convicted of bribery, aggravated arrest and resisting arrest.

However, the former Leicester man has since appealed the 21-month suspended sentence and was able to return to action.

Before England's second clash at Wembley, part of a triple-bill of fixtures, Southgate admitted he was 'delighted' that Maguire was available for a recall.

But Cole insists it is crucial that the centre back first rebuilds his confidence after a difficult opening start to the new campaign for both club and country.

'We’ve got (Tyrone) Mings as well, Coady coming through, but with Harry it’s getting the confidence back,' he added.

'We speak about more off the field than on, and it does take a toll. He has to get over that and start performing better, and hopefully when United as a group start improving, his form will start improving.'

kalo ditimnas mah Maguire main jelek masih ada Coady/Gomes/Mings, lha kalo di klub jelek sapa yg gantiin coba? Lindelof & Bailly juga 11-12, Tuanzebe ???

Maguire Tak Sedang Bela MU, Tetap Saja Dikritik Keane
Bayu Baskoro - detikSport

London - Penampilan Harry Maguire kembali menjadi sasaran kritik Roy Keane.

The Three Lions menutup laga dengan kemenangan 2-1.

'He knows Harry has had a tough time on and off the pitch, a pat on the back would have helped him': Roy Keane criticises Gareth Southgate for not consoling Maguire after his red card

* Harry Maguire was sent off after receiving two yellow cards against Denmark
* The England centre back was clearly devastated as he walked down the tunnel
* Roy Keane believes Gareth Southgate could have given him a 'pat on the back'
* Keane added Maguire will find it tough returning to a Man Utd side struggling

Roy Keane believes England boss Gareth Southgate missed a trick by not consoling Harry Maguire as he trudged off the pitch following his sending off against Denmark.

The Manchester United captain, who has endured a tough few months on and off the pitch, was given his marching orders for two yellow cards in the opening 31 minutes on Wednesday night.

England went on to lose 1-0 at Wembley and former United captain Keane says Southgate could have shown a softer side as a devastated Maguire walked past him down the tunnel.

Roy Keane believes Gareth Southgate could have consoled Harry Maguire after his red card

The England centre back trudged down the tunnel without a word from the England manager

When questioned about Southgate not consoling Maguire, Keane told ITV: 'I think sometimes he [Gareth] knows Harry has had a tough time on and off the pitch, a pat on the back would have helped him.

'That would have settled him from Gareth.'

Keane also said that returning to an under-performing United side, following two defeats out of their first three Premier League games, won't help Maguire's form either.

'The only down side is for Maguire, he's going back to a team not full of confidence,' Keane added.

'I've been in situations before when I was in a situation with brilliant characters, I felt the dressing room was the best in the world. He's not going to get that, in that back four.

'I wouldn't be anywhere near those lads - I don't see them as leaders.'

After the game, Southgate leaped to Maguire's defence after his red card capped a miserable period since being hit with a trio of guilty verdicts for his involvement in an incident whilst on holiday in Mykonos.

Asked whether he felt the Manchester United defender needed a break away from the game, Southgate said: 'Knowing Harry as I do, he'll want to play football.

'The best place for him to be is on the pitch. We know he's happy for everybody to have an opinion on what he should be doing. That's life as a top player. If nobody's interested in you life's very straightforward.

Maguire was sent off after just 31 minutes against Denmark following two yellow cards. The Manchester Unite defender received a second yellow card for a lunge after losing the ball

'If you're captain of United and a top player for England everybody has an opinion. You have to ride with that. He's strong enough to deal with it. He's got to show the resilience I know he has to come through that.

'He is having a period where he is getting a lot of sticks thrown his way but he is big enough to deal with that he will come through it, he will be stronger for it.

'He's got our support and I'm sure his club will do the same. He is getting all sorts at the moment, from people who should know better. None of us like to be in the centre of that storm.'

'I feel sorry for him... his confidence is on the floor': Harry Maguire's NIGHTMARE form continues with red card for two rash tackles in England defeat – as Jamie Redknapp sympathises with Man United captain who has 'got a lot on his mind'

* Jamie Redknapp revealed he 'feels sorry' for Harry Maguire after his red card
* The Manchester United captain was sent off for a reckless challenge at Wembley
* Sky Sports pundit Redknapp said the £85million man is 'having a moment'
* Maguire has had a poor start to the season for both his club and country

Jamie Redknapp has revealed that he 'feels sorry' for Harry Maguire after the Manchester United captain was sent off for England against Denmark, as the Sky Sports pundit added the defender is 'having a moment'.

England boss Gareth Southgate named the £85million defender in his starting XI for the UEFA Nations League tie with Denmark, following on from his display in the 2-1 win over Belgium on Sunday.

But Maguire was sent for an early bath in the first half after committing two clumsy challenges on Kasper Dolberg, with referee Jesus Manzano brandishing a second yellow and reducing England to ten men.

Jamie Redknapp says he 'feels sorry' for Harry Maguire as his turbulent season continued. The £85m defender was dismissed for a reckless challenge on Kasper Dolberg at Wembley

It piles more misery on the former Leicester man, who was in the centre of a media storm in the post-season following his arrest in Mykonos, Greece.

His off-field turmoil has seemingly carried into the 2020-21 campaign, with his form dipping with the Red Devils, having featured in the 6-1 hammering to Spurs before the international break.

Redknapp said that he 'feels sorry' for Maguire and was reluctant to criticise a player 'lacking confidence' during a troublesome time in his career.

'I feel sorry for him,' Redknapp said at half time. 'It would be easy to rip him apart. He’s having a moment.

The dismissal further extends Maguire's torrid start to the 2020-21 campaign on the pitch

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp said he 'feels sorry' for Maguire, who is having a 'moment'. United icon Neville said the dismissal 'sums up his last four to six weeks' on commentary

'He’s having a really bad moment in his career that he is somehow going to have to pull himself together and he’s got a big weekend coming up for him for Manchester United and he’s got to get his confidence back because he is a player really lacking confidence.

'There is a lot going on in his life. I think sometimes we forget that. You can genuinely see he is really struggling with his game at the moment.

'I think his confidence is on the floor, it’s obvious. You don’t become captain of Manchester United if you don’t have a lot about you. You have a presence, you have a quality that people like.

'Right now his confidence is on the floor it’s obvious to see. Everything I hear about him is he’s a really good lad. But he’s making mistakes I didn’t see him make a couple of years ago. He’s got a lot on his mind, there’s no doubt at all. Some players can handle it.

'Some players can play with things going on in their social life and it doesn’t bother them – that (the pitch) is their sanctuary. But others can’t. They go on there and carry it onto the pitch.

'You don’t know what’s going on in people’s minds, we are all very quick to judge, people ripping him apart on social media saying it’s the worst England display. But you don’t know how someone feels when going onto the pitch. He’s making a lot of individual mistakes.

'He has got to pick himself up and show something. He needs a good support system and I have no doubt that he will come through this.

England boss Gareth Southgate has come to the defence of his defender, who he said is 'in the centre of a storm'.

'For me he is a top player, he is a massive part of what we do,' Southgate urged after the game. 'He is having a period where he is getting a lot of sticks thrown his way but he is big enough to deal with that he will come through it, he will be stronger for it.

'He’s got our support and I’m sure his club will do the same. We have total belief in him. He is getting all sorts at the moment, from people who should know better. None of us like to be in the centre of that storm.

'When you get older you can rationalise it. He is experiencing it for the first time. It’s not as though he hasn’t had setbacks before, but the profile of the player he is now because of the club he plays at and the success he has had with us, he is having one of those periods where things are going against him but he has got to hang in there and things will turn.'

Meanwhile, United icon Gary Neville said that Maguire's nightmare display on Wednesday was a reflection of his start to the season thus far.

'It sums up his last four to six weeks,' Neville said on Sky Sports. 'Terrible time for him.

I thought he was lucky with the first challenge. In between a yellow and a red. That one was scruffy play from him. That touch, really slack. And the follow through as well.

'He made one mistake, don’t make the second. The touch lets him down and that follow through. He’s got nowhere to go with it, the Spanish referee.'

Shortly after Maguire's dismissal, England conceded to the visitors, with Christian Eriksen slotting home a penalty after Manzano deemed that Kyle Walker had committed a foul in the 18-yard box.
