United's Under-18s started the season with a*narrow defeat at home to Stoke City, despite taking the lead through*Ben Pearson.

Paul McGuinness' side broke through on the quarter-of-an-hour mark when a neat move led to Sam Byrne playing in Pearson, who ran through from midfield to flash home a terrific finish with his right foot.

Derice Richards equalised before the break by sweeping a controlled finish wide of the diving Jonny Sutherland and the Potters were on top in the second half after getting back onto level terms.

A corner from the left caused problems and James Alabi*was able to find the net with a header as the hosts failed to clear.*Sutherland pulled off a number of fine saves*but United were unable to battle back at the other end to earn a point.

United: Sutherland; Grimshaw, McNair, McConnell, Rowley (Pereira); Weir, Pearson (Harrop), Rothwell, Daehli; Byrne (Love), Wilson. Sub not used: Dalley.

U18s: Spurs 3 United 4

Manchester United's Under-18s claimed a first win of the*2012/13 season*on Saturday, beating Tottenham Hotspur away by the odd goal in seven.

Ben Pearson scored the winner, seven days after opening the scoring in the 2-1 home*loss to*Stoke City. He was joined on the Reds' scoresheet by Nuneaton-born defender Louis Rowley, the club's Young Player of the Year Mats Daehli and young Northern Irish midfielder Paddy McNair.

Rowley got the ball rolling for the Reds at Spurs' training ground, heading home at the back post. The same United player was inadvertently involved in the hosts' first equaliser, deflecting a cross past his own goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini.

The woodwork was rattled at both ends with the score at 1-1, the Reds hitting the bar from a free-kick before Spurs struck a post. The teams then traded goals again with Daehli putting United in front only for the home side to level it for half-time at 2-2. In between, the*lively James Wilson*almost made it 3-1 to*the visitors when he went around the goalkeeper but hit the upright.

Spurs were up in arms, vainly claiming offside, when McNair restored the Reds' lead from close range and although they soon avenged this with a third equaliser, they could find no fourth reply when Pearson finally made it 4-3 to United.

United: Gollini; Love, Grimshaw, McNair, Rowley;*Weir, Pearson, Rothwell, Daehli; Byrne (Dalley), Wilson. Subs not used: Sutherland, McConnell.

STOKE CITY 0

MANCHESTER UNITED 1
(Pereira, 49)
U18s: Stoke 0 United 1

Manchester Under-18s picked up three well-earned points in the Potteries on Tuesday night, courtesy of a second-half free-kick from Andrea Pereira.

The Reds seemed determined from the first whistle to avenge the opening-weekend home defeat to Stoke City, taking this third game of the season to the hosts at Clayton Wood. Pereira almost scored in the 7th minute when James Weir played him through, only for the Potters' Bermudan goalkeeper Dale Eve to make the first of many good saves by tipping over the resulting shot. The woodwork thwarted United's next attack, with Stoke clearing the rebound after Sam Byrne's deflected shot hit the inside of the post.

Byrne was involved in two further opportunities before the half somehow ended goalless. Firstly, he had a 'goal' disallowed for offside after Eve parried Rothwell's long-range shot. Then Byrne's backheel set up James Wilson for a low drive saved by Eve with his feet.

United's pressure paid the decisive dividend just four minutes after the interval. Louis Rowley's raid from left-back was halted illegally on the edge of the box and Pereira swept the resulting free-kick through a forest of players. Pereira spurned his best chance for a double when he sliced high and wide and Wilson's later free-kick was saved by Eve, but one goal ultimately was enough to yield the Reds' second consecutive away win.

United: Gollini; Evans, Grimshaw, McNair, Rowley; Weir, Pearson, Rothwell, Pereira; Byrne (Rudge, 86), Wilson. Subs not used: O'Hara, Gorre, Wilkinson, Harrop.

United's Under-18s may have won twice on the road but slipped to a second successive home defeat as Callum Robinson netted both goals for Aston Villa.

The visitors defended in numbers and took their opportunities in clinical fashion as Paul McGuinness' side failed to find a way past Villa's inspired keeper Craig Hill.

Clear-cut chances were at a premium in the first half although Andreas Pereira had an early shot blocked following a positive run by Sam Byrne. James Wilson dribbled past two defenders to work Hill and forced another stop out of the keeper before teeing up Byrne for a header wide.

As for Villa, Ben Pearson survived a challenge on Jack Grealish inside the area and Pierluigi Gollini made one routine save at his near post but things livened up after the break. Mats Daehli's intelligent lob was just too high after Hill came out of goal to head away a long ball by Pearson but the Midlanders then capitalised on a spell of pressure.

Courtney Wildin headed wastefully off target and Louis Rowley had to clear a Jordan Graham effort off the line. From the resulting corner, the Reds were outnumbered inside the six-yard box and Robinson plundered a simple finish when the ball was nodded back.

United's response was swift with Wilson deftly putting Byrne in the clear but the Irishman hesitated for a fraction of a second and Hill was off his line quickly to smother the danger. Wilson and Pereira made way for Jack Barmby and Jack Rudge with Barmby drilling a drive straight at Hill as Villa defended manfully.

A second goal on the break killed the match off as Grealish showed great tenacity to drive forward from midfield and play in Robinson, who cut in from the left and curled a majestic finish into the corner of the net to leave Gollini with no chance. Daehli was unable to scramble home from a Kenji Gorre cross-shot and Barmby deserved a penalty from the follow-up as he was clattered by Hill's rash attempt to get the loose ball.

Barmby dragged another effort wide as United went down fighting but there was no way through despite some promising approach play. Only an astonishing goalline clearance by Daehli prevented an injury-time third after Daniel Williams looked certain to profit from some magical skill by the outstanding Grealish, and Graham also spurned another opening in the dying seconds.

United: Gollini; Evans, McNair, Grimshaw, Rowley; Weir (Gorre 76), Pearson, Daehli, Pereira (Rudge 61), Wilson (Barmby 61); Byrne. Subs not used: O'Hara, Wilkinson.

Weh.. United abis menang 7-1 vs Newcastle. James Wilson bikin 5 gol. Sangar!!!!

Manchester United have confirmed the Under-18 XI game at Nantwich tonight has been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

===

Nantwich friendly postponed

United's Academy friendly at Nantwich Town has been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch at the Weaver Stadium.

Heavy, persistent rain has left the Evo-Stik League club with no option but to call the fixture off.

Paul McGuinness was scheduled to take an Under-18 XI to Cheshire to mark the 60th anniversary of the Busby Babes' record 23-0 FA Youth Cup victory against Nantwich, when Duncan Edwards scored his first competitive goals for the club.

Players from both sides that night in 1952 were set to be in attendance, including ex-United man Ronnie Cope, and ManUtd.com will reveal any plans to rearrange another date.
