Wolves U21 1 United U21 0 Wolves shaded a tight encounter with an 86th-minute goal by Sam Whittall enough to inflict a rare defeat on Manchester United's Under-21s. The Reds needed a win to secure a place in the semi-finals of the Barclays-sponsored competition but, although Ryan Tunnicliffe hit the bar, it means there was no way past the Wolves defence in 180 minutes following the goalless draw at Moss Lane. United started well with Adnan Januzaj forcing a diving stop out of Aljaz Cotman in the 10th minute and Tunnicliffe smashing against the woodwork after driving forward from a Larnell Cole pass. Januzaj blasted another attempt wide from the edge of the box but the hosts improved towards the interval. Zeli Ismail beat Michele Fornasier and Ben Amos but could only hit the side-netting from a tight angle while efforts by Jack Price and Whittall brought the best out of Amos. A bobbly surface did not help either side and the play became scrappy with the tackles starting to fly in. Januzaj was narrowly off target again soon after a burst forward by Tunnicliffe and the Belgian released the energetic midfielder with a glorious pass but a combination of goalkeeper and defender kept him out.* United still pressed with Jesse Lingard firing over and a tantalising Januzaj cross narrowly evading Tyler Blackett, playing in a much more advanced role, as the opener refused to come despite the visitors looking likeliest to score.* Instead, against the run of play, the outstanding Tom Thorpe conceded a corner and a melee ensued from the cross. With appeals for handball against Lee Evans turned down, Whittall was allowed to sweep in from close range following a real scramble.* Goalkeeper Amos went forward for a couple of Januzaj corners late on but there was no way back for Warren Joyce's side with Reece James having the final attempt but screwing his ambitious drive well wide of goal. The Reds are next in action at Old Trafford on Tuesday against West Brom with qualification still within reach. United:*Amos; Vermijl, Thorpe, Fornasier, James; Blackett (Lawrence 82), Ekangamene, Tunnicliffe, Cole, Lingard; Januzaj. Subs not used: J.Pereira, McCullough, Hendrie, van Velzen. |

U-21s: United 1 West Brom 0 Manchester United sealed a place in the Barclays Under-21 Premier League semi-finals with a 1-0 victory against West Brom at Old Trafford. Larnell Cole's early strike proved decisive and first-teamer Tom Cleverley got 90 minutes of action under his belt as United ensured a top-three finish in the table ahead of the final group fixture with Liverpool, which is also being played at the Theatre of Dreams.* The Reds were quickly into top gear and a delightful move exploited space down the Baggies' right flank. Alex Büttner broke forward to collect a Cleverley pass before feeding Jesse Lingard and an inviting centre was slid into the net from close range by Cole. Only Luke Daniels prevented the hosts from falling further behind as he made smart stops to frustrate Lingard and Cole but West Brom battled their way back into the game. A brave save by Ben Amos kept out Adil Nabi before the keeper was worked again by Romain Sawyers' header. When Amos was beaten all ends up by a Scott Allan drive, fortunately for Warren Joyce's side, the ball cannoned back off the left-hand post. After the break, Lingard continued to look the liveliest forward on show as he saw a shot scrambled away by Daniels before coaxing a delicate curler off target. Büttner joined the attack to good effect again but hammered his centre across the face of goal and the Dutchman later made way for Reece James. With the Reds coping comfortably with the threat posed by former Manchester City man David Oldfield's team, an intricate move led to another attempt by Lingard that drew a save out of Daniels. After the visiting keeper dived to beat out a Ryan Tunnicliffe effort, his side mustered a chance at the other end but Aaron Birch drilled over the top from outside the box. However, it proved to be a largely isolated attack as United kept yet another clean sheet in the quest for silverware, surviving a late scare when Liam O'Neil was unable to scramble home and Amos safely fielded the ball on the line. United:*Amos; Vermijl, Thorpe, Fornasier,*Büttner*(James 65); Cole, Ekangamene, Tunnicliffe, Cleverley, Lingard (Blackett 90); Januzaj (Lawrence 88). Subs not used: J.Pereira, McCullough. |

03/05/2013 16:34 - ManUtd.com, Cliff Butler Res: United 3 Oldham 1 Warren Joyce’s young Reserves side booked a place in the Lancashire F.A. Senior Cup final following this stroll in the sun against neighbours Oldham at The Cliff. The Reds remain in line to sweep the board, for the second successive season, with qualification for the Barclays Under-21 Premier League knockout stage and a place in the Manchester Senior Cup final already assured. United, with several Under-18 regulars drafted in, took control of the game early on and rarely loosened their grip against a*visiting side that sported no fewer than five trialists in their ranks. Gyliano van Velzen and Tom Lawrence were presented with decent chances to open the scoring soon after the start, but the visitors defended well to prevent any concessions. However, the feeling was that it was only going to be a matter of time before United would strike. And so it was, in the 26th minute, that the home side moved into the lead with Lawrence firing home from the penalty spot after being fouled by the Latics’ Jack Truelove. United were on their way, and five minutes before the interval the lead was extended when van Velzen capitalised on lapse of concentration in the Oldham defence to round the keeper and net. Mats Daehli also found the net, following a session of neat passing football, in the 62nd minute, to put the game well and truly out of the visitors’ reach. United introduced three young substitutes during the second half of the game, but it did little to change the pattern of the game. On a slightly brighter note for Oldham, they did have something to celebrate with four minutes to go when Carlton McIntosh, one of three Latics’ substitutes, claimed a consolation goal. James Wilson could have restored the three-goal advantage in final seconds, but he pulled his shot wide from a favourable position. United, the current holders, will now meet Manchester City in the final at L.F.A. County Ground, Leyland, before the start of next season. United: Johnstone; Hendrie, McCullough, Blackett, James (Love 74); Grimshaw, Weir (Wilson 69), Pearson (A Pereira 69), Daehli; van Velzen, Lawrence. Subs not used: Sutherland, Rudge. |
