Default Re: [EPL] Manchester United vs Arsenal

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is searching for a spark and win against old rivals Arsenal can kickstart Manchester United's season

* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs to show his mean streak as Manchester United boss
* The Norwegian must lead his team to a much-needed win over old foes Arsenal
* The Gunners have not earned three points at Old Trafford since September 2006
* Solskjaer has picked up just five wins in the last 18 games; scoring 17 goals

Rio Ferdinand tells a good story about his first day at Manchester United in 2002. Having miscontrolled a ball fired at him deliberately hard by Roy Keane, a voice chirped up.

‘Is this all you get for £30million these days?’ asked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

It is an interesting vignette because it points to a side of the current United manager that we haven’t often seen. Those who know him say that Solskjaer has always been a lot tougher than he looks. During these troubled times at Old Trafford, it is just as well.

If Solskjaer’s reign at United is not on life support ahead of Monday night’s Premier League game with Arsenal at Old Trafford then it is certainly labouring.

The Norwegian continues to smile in that boyish way of his but his countenance cannot disguise the sheer grimness of United’s football. If ever Solskjaer has needed the capacity to approach his work with the same dead-eyed outlook with which he once approached goalscoring then it is probably now.

Solskjaer has suggested in the build-up to the game that his time as a player at United prepared him for the level of expectation. It was a nice line but isn’t really true.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs to show his tough side to survive as Manchester United boss

Nothing can prepare a man for the load he is asked to carry when he becomes manager of this club and the longer United’s run of modest football goes on, the more it will become Solskjaer’s problem. It is the way football works.

‘I’ve had loads of conversations with the board and the club and how we’re seeing this, moving forward,’ said Solskjaer when asked about his own future.

‘Maybe for you (it’s interesting). For me, as I’ve said, I don’t worry too much about it.’

Arsenal have not won at Old Trafford in the league since September 2006 but if that were to change on Monday night then subsequent games at AZ Alkmaar in Europe and against Newcastle and Liverpool in the Premier League would start to look very important indeed.

United do not wish to sack Solskjaer and with good reason. The cycle of managerial change they have created since Sir Alex Ferguson stepped aside in 2013 has taken them nowhere and as such the long-term vision spoken about on the release of last week’s financial results continues to offer Solskjaer a security of sorts. Nevertheless, on the field United’s direction of travel is harming the Norwegian and his prospects. On Friday, he spoke of improvement in his team but during recent games it has been hard to see any. It is this trend that stalks him.

The statistics since Solskjaer was given the job permanently in March are damning enough. Five wins in 18 games and just 17 goals. Equally, the change in the nature of his team’s football since those heady unbeaten days of caretakership has been just as startling.

United ran hot on the back of some timely fortune once Jose Mourinho made way for Solskjaer last winter. How United won at Tottenham in Solskjaer’s early days, for example, perhaps only goalkeeper David de Gea can tell us.

But back then United at least played with a purpose, an energy and a tempo. Freed from the shackles of Mourinho’s professional and personal misery, Solskjaer’s players responded vibrantly.

That freedom and those rhythms have gone now. In the summer, Solskjaer attributed his players’ tapering form last season to a lack of fitness. At the time, it sounded hollow and it certainly looks that way now. United were effective on the counter as they beat a coltish Chelsea 4-0 on opening day but that scoreline flattered them and they have been on the slide ever since.

Their football last week in losing at West Ham was moribund and it was again in the narrow squeak in the Carabao Cup against Rochdale three days later. It is evidence that stacks up against Solskjaer.

‘My job is to lead the players, guide them and tell them that we trust them because they’re here because they’re good players,’ Solskjaer said.

‘But I’m sure they can handle it. They’re getting more and more robust.

‘The group, the culture, is improving. We can reset quicker than we did last year I think.’ If Solskjaer’s intention is to suggest that results don’t tell you everything about the health of a squad then he deserves some leeway. From the outside, we don’t get to see everything. United do have injuries, too. On Monday they will be without Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Luke Shaw and maybe Paul Pogba.

But if they are to be convinced that Solskjaer and the club’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward do know what they are doing, United’s supporters will have to see a reversal of trends on the field very soon.

‘I’m not doubting myself, no,’ said Solskjaer. ‘If I doubt myself then I think the rest of the world would as well.’

Monday’s opponents could be more daunting. This is a big game fixture only in name these days and a flakiness that underpins much of what Unai Emery is trying to do at Arsenal could present United with an opportunity to boost their points tally.

It was against Arsenal in London last March that United’s 12-game unbeaten league run under Solskjaer came to an end. Despite a 2-0 defeat, United actually played quite well that day. They haven’t often done so since.

De Gea: MU Berikan Gol Cuma-cuma Buat Arsenal
Rifqi Ardita Widianto - detikSport

Jakarta - Manchester United harus puas berimbang dengan Arsenal di Old Trafford. David de Gea mengakui timnya melakukan sebuah kesalahan fatal.

Laga MU vs Arsenal di Old Trafford, Selasa (1/10/2019) dinihari WIB berakhir sama kuat 1-1.

Pertandingannya cukup seimbang.

'The lack of quality is frightening': Roy Keane not impressed by 'shocking' draw between Manchester United and Arsenal and says he doesn't expect either team to break back into top four

* Manchester United and Arsenal played out a lacklustre draw at Old Trafford
* Roy Keane couldn't believe how bad the first half was between the two sides
* Things didn't improve in the second-half as he bemoaned the lack of quality
* Manchester United took the lead through Scott McTominay before the break
* Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang levelled after VAR overturned an offside call

Roy Keane hit out at the 'shocking' draw between Manchester United and Arsenal at Old Trafford on Monday night after describing the lack of quality as 'frightening'.

It took a staggering 28 minutes for either side to have a shot on goal in the first half – the longest wait for a first attempt in a single Premier League game this season – before Scott McTominay broke the deadlock with a thunderous effort on the stroke of half-time.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang drew Arsenal level in the second-half, only after VAR had overturned an offside call in the process, with both sides sharing the spoils.

But Keane was in no mood for niceties as he bemoaned the declining standards of what was once a flagship game in the competition.

'We've been watching it and we can't believe how bad it is,' Keane said at half-time on Sky Sports.

'There's been a lack of quality, players seem to be struggling to keep their feet, lot of yellow cards, no real discipline. But the lack of quality is frightening, really.'

While Keane was hugely critical of both sides for their first-half performance, the former United skipper praised McTominay for displaying the only real bit of quality in what was a woeful first 45 minutes at the Theatre of Dreams.

Roy Keane has admitted that he can't believe 'how bad' the first half at Old Trafford was. Keane believes that neither side have the quality to finish in the top four this season

'The one bit of quality we've seen in the whole half – fantastic strike,' Keane added. 'It was shocking for the first 40 minutes.'

Even former Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas couldn't resist having a dig at the quality as he asked his followers to try and find positives about the game.

The Monaco man tweeted: 'Thoughts on the game so far without using a bad word? Try to be creative.'

At full-time co-commentator Gary Neville claimed the second-half had been an improvement, but Keane was not impressed back in the studio.

'Gary must've been watching a different game, I thought the second half was shocking – really poor.

'Arsenal responded well but United will be kicking themselves as Arsenal were there for the taking. Not too many positives.'

On the evidence of Monday night, the former United captain believes both clubs will struggle to secure Champions League qualification next season.

When asked who will finish in the top four, he replied: 'On tonight's performance – none of them.

'United have to invest but on tonight's performance, it would be West Ham and Leicester to break in.'

Fellow pundit Jamie Carragher believes Arsenal have the edge due to their wealth of attacking talent.

'I'll say Arsenal because there's more goals in them with Lacazette and Aubameyang, he said.

'United are forever known for flying wingers but always a massive goal threat, I don't see it changing. Have they got the players to be clinical? I don't think they have.'

PLAYER RATINGS: Scott McTominay was a bright spark on a dim night for Manchester United and Arsenal

* Manchester United and Arsenal shared the points in a poor quality contest
* Scott McTominay opened scoring with a superb strike before half-time
* VAR overturned poor offside call allowing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to level

Manchester United and Arsenal shared the points in a 1-1 draw which showed just how far both teams are from a genuine title challenge.

Scott McTominay broke the deadlock with a fine strike shortly before half-time before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang equalised with a cool finish which was given following a VAR consultation.

Sportsmail's CHRIS WHEELER has all the player ratings from Old Trafford...

Manchester United (4-2-3-1)

David de Gea - 7

Great double save in the first half from Saka and Guendouzi. Blameless for the goal.

Ashley Young - 6

Had his hands full with the pace and perseverance of Saka down the Arsenal left.

Harry Maguire - 6.5

Solid in defence but poor set-pieces nullified his threat at the other end.

Harry Maguire (right) challenges Aubameyang during the first half of the clash at Old Trafford

Victor Lindelof - 6

Left stranded for Arsenal's equaliser and couldn't quite recover in time.

Paul Pogba - 6.5

Back from injury but overhit some early passes and took his time to get into the game.

Scott McTominay - 8

Fantastic strike for the goal and covered every area of the pitch for his team.

Scott McTominay wheels away in celebration after breaking the deadlock just before half-time

Andreas Pereira - 6

Had one effort saved in the first half but didn't offer enough of a threat.

Jesse Lingard - 6

Still working his way back after illness and a little off the pace at times.

Daniel James - 6.5

His searing pace was a real problem for Arsenal but final ball was lacking at times.

Marcus Rashford - 6

Fit to play after injury but still short of sharpness and wasted his only chance.

Marcus Rashford breaks away from Arsenal defender Sead Kolasinac during the second half

Subs

Mata, Rojo, Fred (for Lingard 74, 6), Romero, Greenwood (for Pereira 74, 6), Matic, Williams

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer - 6

Went for pace and energy and will be disappointed it didn't bring a win.

Referee: Kevin Friend 6

Handled the Arsenal goal well to let VAR decide but got a couple of other calls wrong.
