Setelah melewati setengah musim, kegagalan penalti Wayne Rooney ke gawang the hammers mid week lalu sedikit banyak menjadi sorotan para pemerhati bola secara umum, juga bbrp ex Reds ikut berbicara mengenai pencapaian gol dari kesempatan penalty yg tidak mencapai 50%, hanya 4 kali yg berhasil jadi gol dari 9 kali kesempatan yg didapat United. Bahkan uncle Keano sampai menyampaikan klo Roo jangan ambil penalti lagi.

Spot-kicks must improve



Wayne Rooney's penalty miss against West Ham may not have proved costly - but Sir Alex Ferguson still wants his spot-kick takers to improve.

Penalties awarded to Manchester United this season have resulted in more misses than goals, and the boss admits it's a concern.*Sir Alex told MUTV: "I don’t think it is [just] one of those things, we must improve on that, I must say.

"There's been a lot of talk about the boy (Rickie) Lambert at Southampton, who has scored 31 out of 31 – that’s what penalty-kick taking is all about.

"There have been several other great examples from over the years. Matt Le Tissier scored 47 out of 48 and there was a player in Scotland who played for Rangers [Johnny Hubbard, who scored 65 out of 68].

"A penalty kick is your opportunity to take an advantage, whether it was a foul or a handball that led to it. You have to score a goal."

Rooney's failure from the spot in Wednesday's FA Cup replay was his second of the season - he also missed in the November win over Arsenal - and the team's fifth penalty miss of the campaign overall.

The other players who've spurned spot-kick opportunities are Javier Hernandez at home to Wigan, Nani against Galatasaray in the Champions League and Robin van Persie at Southampton, where he scored a hat-trick in open play.

So far, all of this season's penalty failures have come in victories for the Reds but Sir Alex will insist his side don't take that statistic for granted going forward.

If United win a penalty at White Hart Lane on Sunday, don’t expect Wayne Rooney to place the ball on the spot.

The England striker made a goal-scoring return from injury on Wednesday, but he effectively abdicated future responsibility from 12 yards.

It would be easy to dismiss his ballooned spot-kick as a consequence of a player who has been out for three weeks nursing a knee injury.

And there were clear signs that Rooney is still working his way back to full match sharpness with a number of heavy touches in the 1-0 win against West Ham.

But a damning recent penalty record, which prompted Sir Alex Ferguson to issue a sober warning following his miss against Arsenal in November, means the 27-year-old will almost certainly be relieved of the duty from now on.

Rooney has now failed in five of his last nine attempts from the spot.

He has missed 10 in all for United – a statistic that is sure to see Robin van Persie handed the job from now on.

But on a night when Rooney’s penalty prowess was placed under scrutiny, he received the backing of Ryan Giggs.

“Wayne, under pressure, has scored so many crucial penalties for us,” said the veteran midfielder. “It’s not so bad when it doesn’t alter the result or doesn’t really matter on the night, but Wayne will obviously be concerned because he wants to score goals.”

Ferguson is also concerned, citing Rickie Lambert and Matt Le Tissier as examples Rooney should be striving to emulate. Former United captain Roy Keane was also damning of Rooney’s stats.

“I think that will be the last penalty Rooney takes for United,” he said. “Wayne has missed 10 now and that is far too many.

“Clearly he is not up to it in terms of taking penalties. Van Persie I’m sure will be delighted to take over that role.”

Former Reds midfielder Gordon Strachan added: “There must be other players at United saying, ‘Listen, I’ll take them now.’ I missed a couple of penalties and sometimes you want someone else to step up and give you a break now and then. Someone in the dressing room to say, ‘I’ll take the next one, that’s fine.’

“It then takes the pressure off Wayne – because he will want to get back on it. Sometimes it is better to have a break from penalties and let someone else take them and then you feel better about yourself.”

Rooney’s second penalty miss of the season was United’s fifth this term with van Persie, Nani and Javier Hernandez also fluffing their lines.

Van Persie’s miss against Southampton in September was the Dutchman’s most humbling moment in a United shirt – but he made amends by scoring a match-winning hat-trick at St Mary’s.

Ryan Giggs has jumped to Wayne Rooney's defence over his Manchester United penalty-kick trauma.

Rooney failed from the spot for the second time this season, and his 10th overall as a United player, as the Reds scraped past West Ham to book an FA Cup fourth round tie with Fulham on January 26.

Evidently, Sir Alex Ferguson was not impressed by this latest effort, ballooned into the Stretford End, which added to a catalogue of such failures from his side.

United have now missed more penalties than they have scored this term - the current score stands at 5-4. However, Giggs has been around long enough to know these frailties can affect anyone.

Even United's most lethal predator in recent times, Ruud van Nistelrooy, missed three in succession once, culminating in those lamentable scenes against Arsenal in 2003.

"Players sometimes go through these types of spells," said Giggs.

"Ruud van Nistelrooy missing three on the trot. Not many people remember that but I certainly do.

"The fourth one he stepped up, buried it and probably didn't miss one again.

"Wayne is our penalty taker. He will be disappointed because he is a goalscorer who wants to score goals.

"But I am sure if we get another, he will take it."

And in total, he has missed seven of the 21 penalties he has taken in the Barclays Premier League – a success rate of 66.7 per cent. He does have a 100 per cent record in the Champions League, scoring all four from the spot, but he’s missed his two attempts in the FA Cup.*



Roo's former Everton team-mate Kevin Kilbane, "If he has missed five of his last nine, it means he scored 10 out of 12 before that but once you miss, and start to lose confidence it is amazing how quickly it gets into your head and you have to say, any other player and they’d be off penalty duties. If van Persie plays now, he will probably take them."

Liverpool (Home) - 21/3/2010: A reasonably well struck to Reina’s left which the Liverpool keeper saves well, only for Rooney to drill home the rebound.

Sir Alex puts Giggs on spot



Sir Alex Ferguson has stood by his decision to strip Wayne Rooney of Manchester United’s penalty-taking duties, but insists he still has faith in the striker from 12 yards.

Ryan Giggs stepped up to score from the spot in the Reds’ 4-1 win over Fulham, even though Rooney, United’s usual designated penalty-taker, was also on the pitch.

The Englishman, however, missed his 10th penalty in a Reds shirt in United’s recent FA Cup third round replay, prompting Sir Alex to hand over the responsibility to his most experienced player.

“I think Ryan's probably one of our best penalty takers, to be honest,” the manager told MUTV.

“I think it's fair that with Wayne missing the penalties he has, it was time to give him a break. He'll come back to it, though, there's no question about that.

“The thing about Wayne is that it doesn't faze him if he misses a penalty kick. He's got a fantastic temperament for that.”

Kenapa ya selalu gagal? mubadzir sebenarnya.. tapi ndak apalah yang penting bisa menang, kalau saya lihat sih united emang lebih jago bermain kolektif. tapi kalau urasan nenbang bola mati yang namanya Pinalti bueeehhh butuh mental baja juga tuh.. ane aja sering gagal di pinalti, akhirnya semprotan coach mendarat di telinga gue bro hehehe..
