"Rio just talked sense. Every time I spoke to him he just talked sense, whether it was about me, about the team or just things in general life. Everything he said I listened to and I understood everything about what he was trying to say. He explained everything. He was a great go-to man when you needed some help with things. His leadership qualities, his calmness and his overall game were top class. When he was at his peak he was one of the best in the world, if not the best.

The partnership he had with Nemanja Vidic was incredible. It helps if you have an understanding off the pitch, which they did, but on the pitch communication is key. You can see everything in front of you and you’re both trying to orchestrate things to keep things under control. The pair of them were the best at it.

In terms of stand-out performances of Rio’s – there were so many! I watched him in big cup finals before I even came to United and I remember thinking that’s the level I want to be at one day. The pair of them were two players to admire.

Playing alongside him was great. The thing I remember most is that he never shut up! As a young kid growing up and trying to establish yourself in the team, you couldn’t ask for anyone better to learn from. He always helped you and talked to you about where you needed to be. He made sure he made life easier for you out on the pitch. It’s something that fans and maybe other players didn’t see, but I saw it and it was a big help.

He was a big character in the dressing room and a joker. But when it got serious he got serious too. When it was down to business, he meant business! He’s got to be up there with the greats we’ve had at this club."

Phil Jones Merasa Takut dengan Cedera yang Dialaminya



Bek Manchester United, Phil Jones, mengaku merasa takut ketika mengetahui ia memiliki masalah di betisnya. Jones mengalami pembekuan darah di betisnya ketika United menjalani tur pramusim The Red Devils ke Amerika Serikat.

Pemain 23 tahun ini ditarik dari skuad saat tur United ke Amerika Serikat. Jones harus mengalami perawatan khusus ketika hasil scan menunjukkan ada kejanggalan di kakinya. Akibat cederanya itu, bek tim nasional (timnas) Inggris ini harus beristirahat selama enam minggu.

“Cukup menakutkan pada awalnya, setidaknya sampai saya sudah mengetahui cedera apa yang saya alami dan saya cukup melakukan hal yang benar agar bisa kembali pulih,” ujar Phil Jones seperti yang dikutip Mirror.

“Semua terjadi ketika saya menjalani pertandingan pramusim melawan Barcelona, saya merasakan ada yang aneh di betis saya. Awalnya saya tidak berpikir tidak ada masalah pada kaki saya sampai akhirnya dokter memberi tahu apa yang terjadi sebenarnya,” lanjutnya.

Phil Jones sudah mencetak lima gol dari 172 penampilannya selama berseragam United. Jones diharapkan bisa kembali bugar dan bisa membantu lini pertahanan The Red Devils.

Phil Jones admitted it was 'frightening' when the Manchester United club doctor found a blood clot in his calf during pre-season.

The 23-year-old, currently on international duty with England, missed the first few weeks of the season following the discovery after a friendly against Barcelona.

'It was pretty frightening at first at least until I found out the extent of the injury,' said Jones.

'And then it was just about doing the right thing, and recovering well and making sure it went.

'It happened in pre-season against Barcelona and I just felt some tightness in my calf and it kept coming and didn’t go away.

'I thought nothing of it at first. We got back to England but a couple of days before we played Tottenham in the first game of the season I felt it again.

'I just said to the doctor at United "it’s just not going away". So we had a scan then and discovered there was a blood clot in the calf.

'It is what it is. You can’t change that. It’s not from the tackle or a stupid injury, it was just a freak incident, just a freak thing. Now I’m on a blood thinning tablet.'

Jones played alongside Manchester United team-mate Chris Smalling as England were beaten 2-0 by Spain in Alicante, and could start again against France at Wembley on Tuesday night.

And the defender is more than happy to just be playing again for club and country.

'It was probably the most frustrating time of my career, not being able to train with the squad or go anywhere near them,' Jones added.

'That’s gone now, that’s the past. I’m looking forward to the future. I’m glad to be back involved playing.'

Jones: Inggris Mampu Tandingi Spanyol

PHIL JONES: WE NEED THE FANS MORE THAN EVER

Phil Jones insists Manchester United need the supporters more than ever after Saturday’s defeat to Norwich City in the Barclays Premier League.

Goals from Cameron Jerome and Alex Tettey earned the Canaries a 2-1 win at Old Trafford and, although Anthony Martial’s second-half strike gave United hope, Louis van Gaal's men suffered a first home loss of the season.

Jones insists everyone connected to the club must stick together, with the Reds determined to get back to winning ways as soon as possible after six games without a victory.

The defender told ManUtd.com and other reporters after Saturday's match: “It was disappointing again. We’ve just got to keep going, working hard, take the criticism and stick together. There’s nothing else we can do.

“We need to keep plugging away, create chances, get back to the drawing board and pick ourselves up. We’ve played good football in patches this season but we need to stick together, there’s nothing else we can do.

“We can’t come out and say we’ve played well in parts because ultimately we’ve lost the game. We’re upset, the fans are upset, everyone is upset, but we need the fans more than ever now.”

After defeats to Wolfsburg and Bournemouth, the Reds have now lost three games in a row but Jones is confident the players can turn it around over the festive period – starting with the Boxing Day trip to the Britannia Stadium.

“We’ve got to pull through and we will. Only ourselves can turn it around,” he added. “We have the chance to do that against Stoke, which is going to be a difficult game again, but we’ve got to go and do it. We’ve got to prepare right and win the game.”

The Reds have drawn criticism from some quarters after slipping down to fifth in the table and going out of the Champions League. However, Jones maintains that the players are fully behind their manager and have to take responsibility for results on the pitch.

“The manager picks the team and the team have to go out and do their best," he insisted. "We might be playing well in patches and not scoring or whatever it is, but we need to take responsibility for results.

“The players aren’t hiding behind anyone. The manager is doing all he can and is doing a terrific job.

“It’s not even questionable in the dressing room [that the manager has the players’ backing]. The lads are fully focused on doing well for ourselves, the manager and the fans week in, week out.

“He [van Gaal] has been positive, the same as us. He’s devastated when we’ve lost games but the only way we are going to come out of this is if we keep working hard.”

JONES: THINGS CAN TURN AROUND QUICKLY

Manchester United defender Phil Jones insists the topsy-turvy nature of this season’s Barclays Premier League means things can change very quickly and he says the players are determined to turn things in their favour as soon as possible and reassert themselves in the title race.

Just 10 points separate the top 10 teams in English football’s top flight, with United, Manchester City, Arsenal and Leicester City all having topped the tree in the last couple of months.

Disappointing results during December have seen Louis van Gaal’s men drop just below the top four, but Jones feels a run of victories could catapult the Reds back into a strong position to fight for the championship crown.

"It’s strange but the table shows that literally anyone can win the league this season. Arsenal, Chelsea, Leicester, City, ourselves, Tottenham, Stoke, Watford… nobody seems to want to win it," he told MUTV.

"It only takes a good run of five, six, seven games and getting a few wins and it soon turns around. We’re disappointed with the way we’ve played over the past few games, although we did well against Chelsea, but by no means are we out of it [the title race]. If we can put a few wins together we’ll be right back up there."

Jones has been part of a solid backline that has the best clean sheets record in the league so far this term - 10 in 19 games. And while performances and results have not been what everyone has wanted lately, the 23-year-old maintains that keeping things tight at the back can only help the team.

"I was always taught as a youngster that if you keep a clean sheet you’ve got a great chance of winning the game and we’ve done that more often than not this season," he added. "Norwich and Stoke were games in which we conceded sloppy goals, but other than those matches we’ve been pretty solid. Everyone who’s played has done their job and we hope we can carry that on and produce more clean sheets."
