Default Re: [FA Cup] Manchester United 2-2 Chelsea, 6th round

Manchester United player's rating by FoxSports

David De Gea - 7.5

There was very little that De Gea could do about the two goals he allowed to hit the back of the net in this one. The Spaniard was one of United's better performers during a wayward second half, building on a first period where he was hardly tested with some alert goalkeeping to keep out attempts from David Luiz and Juan Mata.

Rafael - 6.5

The Brazilian carried out more of his signature runs up the park when he did not have the presence of Eden Hazard to deal with. After the Chelsea substitute came on to work his magic, Rafael struggled to keep pace with him and often resorted to temporary measures of giving away throw-ins to slow down the former Lille man.

Rio Ferdinand - 7.0

England manager Roy Hodgson, who was watching from the stands, must have felt a twinge of regret watching Ferdinand turn in a commendable display for the Red Devils. The central defender was equal to almost everything thrown at him throughout the game and was his team's stand-out performer at the back.

Jonny Evans - 6.5

Whilst he was not responsible for as many last-ditch tackles and clearances as Ferdinand, Evans held his ground well under the barrage of Chelsea attacks in the second half. He did have certain nervy moments late on in the game, but was lucky that neither Mata nor Ashley Cole punished United for them.

Patrice Evra - 6.0

The Red Devils skipper had a quiet game, as he had his hands full tracking the criss-crossing runs of Moses and Mata. With United's early lead in the game, it was understandable for Evra to stick to his defensive duties, but he ran out of steam later on when his team could have benefitted from some supporting runs upfront.

Michael Carrick - 7.5

Perhaps the closest thing the Red Devils have to Paul Scholes in the line-up, Carrick did his best to pull the strings from midfield. His floated pass to Hernandez for the opener was nothing short of a peach, but he could not find a similar amount of composure when the tide turned blue in the second half.

Tom Cleverley - 6.0

Although Cleverley was full of tireless running throughout the game, it would be hard to isolate a point in the game where he was pivotal. To make matters worse, he seemed to tire very early on in the second half, allowing the Chelsea midfield to overrun his team-mates.

Nani (off 47') - 7.0

The Portuguese had a point to prove to the home fans in this one and he got it across by being a thorn in the Chelsea defence. It was a pity he was not afforded the opportunity to finish the game as United could have benefitted from his speedy runs when they were looking for the winner.

Shinji Kagawa (off 76') - 6.5

After his recent hat-trick against Norwich, Red Devils fans were expecting a little more from Kagawa than the tame showing he turned in for this one. Although he was given time on the ball during the first half, the Japanese international struggled to play the right pass to his team-mates and lost out in the physical battle during the second period.

Wayne Rooney - 7.0

With Old Trafford cheering him on, Rooney turned in a typically conscientious performance for United. Scoring early on with a free kick to silence any speculation of his future, the England international would likely be disappointed that he could not find a second to secure the team a win.

Javier Hernandez (off 63') - 7.0

The dangerman for the Red Devils in the first half, Hernandez was sneaking around and past the Chelsea defenders with ease. However, he just could not keep up that level of performance in the second-half, forcing Sir Alex Ferguson into making a change.

Substitutes

Antonio Valencia (on 47') - 5.0

Valencia turned in a display of speed and stamina, but had nothing to show for it because of he was let down by several wayward crosses.

Danny Welbeck (on 76') - N/A

Robin van Persie (on 63') - 4.5

Sensing that the tide was turning away from his team, Ferguson threw in his top scorer. However, van Persie spent most of his time chasing shadows and was hardly the threat that United needed.

But the only thing we can say is we're still in the cup." SAF

Man Utd were lucky against Chelsea - Sir Alex Ferguson

Sir Alex Ferguson admitted Manchester United were lucky to still be in the FA Cup after a resurgent Chelsea nearly snatched victory at Old Trafford.

If United beat Chelsea in the replay, they could face Manchester City in the semi-finals in April.

But Ferguson said his team paid for their efforts against Real Madrid.

"We're lucky to be in the cup. We just ran out of legs and Chelsea were far the better team in the second half," he said after the 2-2 draw.

Talking tactics
Robbie Savage BBC Radio 5 live

"Chelsea looked vulnerable at the back in the first half but the problem was in their midfield, not in their defence. That changed in the second half. For starters Chelsea were a lot more compact in the middle of the pitch and they did not allow United the same amount of space.

"Eden Hazard was the key to their comeback, though. His pace and penetration meant he contributed more on his own than Chelsea's three attacking midfielders had managed between them before he came on."
  • Chelsea changes turned Man Utd FA Cup tie, says Robbie Savage
"But I can't be critical of my side because the running they had to do on Tuesday night, against a really top side in Real Madrid, had its bearing on today's result, no doubt about that.

"The two full-backs, Rafael and Patrice [Evra], are knackered and the two central midfielders tired badly. We kept giving the ball away and it made it a long day for us, going from one penalty box and back to our own."

Chelsea recovered from a poor first half as Ramires and Eden Hazard levelled the game after the break following early goals from Javier Hernandez and Wayne Rooney.

And, with barely a minute remaining, United had goalkeeper David de Gea to thank after he denied Spanish compatriot Juan Mata with a superb save.

That stop prevented Ferguson's side going out of two competitions in a week, following their controversial Champions League defeat by Real Madrid.

Rooney was dropped from that game, but he returned to the starting line-up against Chelsea - though he was one of several players to fade in the second half.

FA Cup semi-final draw
  • Millwall or Blackburn v Wigan Athletic
  • Manchester City or Chelsea v Manchester United
The ties will take place on the weekend of 13 and 14 April.

United's plight was not helped by a first-half injury to Nani, who was taken off with a hamstring problem. Ferguson said the injury was not "too serious".

The date for the replay with Chelsea has not been confirmed, but will not happen this week as Chelsea are still involved in the Europa League.

Ferguson told MUTV:

"The replay is not a problem for us. We've got plenty of time for it as we have no European games.

"I don't know when it's going to be played, mind you - probably May because we've got the international break coming up! But the only thing we can say is we're still in the cup."

GIF: David De Gea 90th-minute wonder save to keep Manchester United in the FA Cup

Manchester United’s David De Gea pulled off a fantastic footed save in the 90th-minute against Chelsea to keep the Reds in the FA Cup.

As you can see from the above GIF, Juan Mata cuts inside of Jonny Evans onto his left foot, it all looked too easy as the Old Trafford faithful through that their team would be heading out of the FA Cup… but, David De Gea had other ideas.

De Gea opened his body and spread out as much as he could, as the ball seemed to be heading the bottom corner his right-foot deflected the ball wide. A fantastic save that has kept Manchester United in the FA Cup as the tie goes to a replay at Stamford Bridge.

The winner of the replay will face Manchester City at Wembley.

Replay causes fixture problem for FA
FM - 11th March 2013

The Football Association are attempting to sort out the fixture mess that was caused by Sunday's 2-2 FA Cup quarter-final draw between Manchester United and Chelsea.

Much hinges on Chelsea's Europa League encounter with Steaua Bucharest at Stamford Bridge on Thursday. For if Rafael Benitez's men are able to overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit, they would qualify for a quarter-final that would be played in the two midweeks immediately prior to the confirmed FA Cup semi-final dates of April 13 and 14.

The preceding international break rules out United heading to Chelsea for the right to play Manchester City in the last four any earlier, as it is impractical to cancel Premier League fixtures due to be played this weekend as some have suggested.

It would leave the FA either asking for matches on Easter weekend - United visit Sunderland and Chelsea head to Southampton, both for TV fixtures - to be postponed, or those on the following weekend, which would include the Manchester derby.

The FA might be loathe to do that, though, because it merely stacks up a problem for later in the season, with matches from this weekend, and those due to be played when the semi-finals take place, already needing to be re-arranged.

That would force Chelsea into sandwiching the replay at the start of a midweek that also involves a European commitment.

Even that is not straightforward as Fulham are due to entertain QPR on Easter Monday, April 1, and local police are unlikely to sanction a cup tie on the same day.

The following Monday is when United are set to entertain City, although that fixture was set to be pushed back to the previous Saturday had Sir Alex Ferguson's men made it past Real Madrid in the Champions League.

An additional complication is whether Chelsea get drawn to play at home first, or away in the Europa League draw when it is made on Friday.

These complications would disappear if Rafael Benitez's men fail to make it past Steaua this week, with the replay then likely to be played during the first week of April, even though UEFA prefers major countries not to arrange domestic fixtures at the same time as their competitions.
