Rooney declared fit for United vs West Brom


Louis van Gaal has declared Wayne Rooney fit for Manchester United’s Barclays Premier League encounter with West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.

The club captain suffered a knee injury in the closing stages of last weekend’s 3-0 defeat to Everton at Goodison Park and was subsequently replaced by Robin van Persie on 88 minutes. However, during his weekly interview with MUTV at the Aon Training Complex, the manager provided a positive update on the striker.

Van Gaal also confirmed van Persie and Phil Jones are both available for selection, although Michael Carrick, Luke Shaw and Jonny Evans are all ruled out through injury.

"Rooney is fit to play, it was not so heavy as we expected," the manager explained. "Wayne is very important for us, so I am very happy. Jones is fit but we have to see his match rhythm, of course. But Shaw has trouble with his groin so he cannot play."

Quizzed further on Evans, the boss said: "It is unbelievable. For six weeks he had nothing and he could not play or participate in the selection [due to suspension] and then he had an injury. It is unbelievable, but it is true."

On van Persie, van Gaal said he was pleased his Dutch compatriot scored twice for the Under-21s on Monday. "He played 80 minutes, and I think that’s good. When you score two goals also, it gives a boost for the confidence of Robin. He can play but we have to wait and see if I let him play, of course."
