United will get physical, says Fletcher
3 January 2011

Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher said he is ready for the physical battle as Stoke prepare to visit Old Trafford on Tuesday.

English Premier League leaders United are eager for another three points to sustain their title challenge, but Fletcher is wary of the threat posed by Tony Pulis' men.

"We know what to expect from Stoke," Fletcher said.

"They've really consolidated themselves as a Premier League side and Tony Pulis has done a great job. You know you're in for a battle when you play Stoke and you have to win that battle and earn the right to play."

"It's going to be a difficult game. We experienced that at the Britannia (Stadium) and we're expecting more of the same at Old Trafford. They always have a go. They look at home in the Premier League now and they know what it's all about. They have some players who like to attack and Tony Pulis doesn't like his side to sit back. We expect them to come and have a go at us, as most teams have done at Old Trafford this season."

"You know Stoke will be physical at times because they lump free kicks and long throw-ins into the box but we can't neglect the other ways they can cause problems. It's important you defend as a team and that starts with the front players. Our defensive performances have been very good and we'll do our homework and prepare for Stoke's threat. We know they'll be a danger from set pieces - they're a big, strong, physical side, so we'll have to match them and make sure we're on our toes."

Striker Wayne Rooney is a doubt after he picked up an ankle injury during United's 2-1 win at West Brom on Saturday, but midfielder Nani could return having missed the past two matches with a hip problem.

United assistant manager Mike Phelan insisted Alex Ferguson's men will treat Stoke with respect, particularly given their tag as a physical side.

"Stoke, for us, is as big a game as playing Chelsea, Arsenal or Liverpool, purely because they demand a high level of attention to detail," Phelan said.

"They are a very good team. They've sustained their Premier League status for a third successive season now and are a competitive side."

"They certainly give you a run for your money. We respect Stoke a lot for the way the club is run and for what they have achieved. One thing we do know is that we have to be fully focused when we play them."

Premier League preview: Manchester United v Stoke

Manchester United can consolidate their place on top of the English Premier League with victory over Stoke City on Tuesday.

Sir Alex Ferguson's side have two games in hand on arch-rivals and second-placed Manchester City, and will be looking to continue their strong form when Tony Pulis' men visit Old Trafford.

United have not lost at home in 17 matches, their last defeat coming at the hands of champions Chelsea in April, while Stoke have gone unbeaten on the road in their past three matches, racking up wins against West Bromwich Albion in November and Blackburn on Boxing Day.

Striker Kenwyne Jones scored in their 2-0 win over Everton on Saturday, and the Trinidad and Tobago international said he hopes to use the confidence to propel his side into the European places.

"The goal will give me confidence for sure," Jones told the club's official website. "The last few weeks, chances have been few and far between and when they have come I have missed them or the 'keeper has saved them which is frustrating."

"Thankfully though, I have got the ball rolling again now and hopefully I can score a few more and really help the club push on in 2011. There is no reason why, with the players we have here, that we can't improve on what was achieved last season."

Stoke's only injury casualty is Mamady Sidibe, who is out with a calf problem, while United will be without Wayne Rooney, who sustained an ankle injury in their 2-1 win over West Bromwich Albion over the weekend.

John O'Shea, Paul Scholes and Antonio Valencia are also out due to injury, while South Korean Ji-Sung Park will miss a month because of the Asian Cup.

Stoke, who currently sit eighth in the league standings, lost the corresponding fixture last season 4-0.

MANCHESTER UNITED v Stoke: Sir Alex Ferguson waits on fitness of crocked trio
-dailymail.co.uk-

Sir Alex Ferguson will need to check on the fitness of Wayne Rooney, Patrice Evra and Darron Gibson before finalising his Manchester United line-up to face Stoke.

Rooney is the most obvious worry after getting a nasty kick on his ankle by Chris Brunt at West Bromwich on Saturday but Evra and Gibson also finished the game moving at less than full tilt and Ferguson will need to be reassured about their fitness before picking any of them.

Misery: Wayne Rooney was injured against West Bromwich

Nani (hip) might be available, while skipper Nemanja Vidic escaped suspension for his fifth booking of the season, which came one day after the December 31 cut-off point.

Squad: Van der Sar, Kuszczak, Rafael, Brown, Neville, O'Shea, Ferdinand, Vidic, Smalling, Evans, Evra, Fabio, Nani, Obertan, Carrick, Fletcher, Gibson, Anderson, Giggs, Bebe, Rooney, Berbatov, Macheda, Hernandez, Owen.

Manchester United v STOKE: Robert Huth to make his return for Potters
-dailymail.co.uk-

Stoke defender Robert Huth is available again after suspension for the Barclays Premier League match against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

Huth was forced to sit out the victory over Everton at the Britannia Stadium on Saturday.
Ricardo Fuller is looking to retain his place up front alongside Kenwyne Jones ahead of Jon Walters.

Returning: Stoke's Robert Huth (left)

Squad: Begovic, Faye, Shawcross, Huth, Collins, Wilson, Etherington, Pennant, Whelan, Whitehead, Walters, Fuller, Jones, Gudjohnsen, Wilkinson, Higginbotham, Tuncay, Delap, Diao, Sorensen.
